The five of you were, fortunately, all up late one particular new moon evening at the Grand Lodge when the summons comes from Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng to meet him in the study adjoining his chambers. As he invites you in, he looks as tired as the rest of you feel. “I’m sorry to call you in on such short notice and on such a dark night, but a friend of the Society needs your help immediately.” From an adjoining chamber, an elegantly dressed woman of middle age with olive skin; long, straight black hair; and piercing eyes steps into the room. “Allow me to introduce to you Hamaria Blakros, of the esteemed Blakros family, whose name I’m sure you all know.”

Hamaria sits at Dreng’s side, smooths her satin dress over her knees, and speaks in a clear though pained voice. “I’m afraid my forebears made a terrible mistake, and I need you to help remedy the situation. When the Blakroses were first gaining a financial and social foothold centuries ago, my ancestors made a pact called the Penumbral Accords with a strange organization on the Shadow Plane called the Onyx Alliance. This pact granted us trade routes through its dark realm to avoid unpleasant searches, tariffs, and questions among the many parties with whom we traded. At the time, this was an invaluable service, but as our wealth and influence grew, the benefits became less pronounced. Now, almost five centuries later, we no longer want to pay the ongoing price of this agreement. Since that time, we’ve been providing a steady stream of slaves to the Onyx Alliance... including the eldest of our daughters each generation. This year we have two eldest daughters—my twins Eleanir and Michellia—and I refuse to let them be taken!

“But we can’t actively break the Penumbral Accords ourselves. We don’t know all the details other than our end of the bargain, which requires us to deliver slaves to our very own Blakros Museum on the night of each new moon—and to deliver the eldest Blackros daughter of each generation on the new moon after her 21st birthday. We are told to stay away until dawn, and have honored this command thus far. In every instance for generations, we’ve returned to find no sign of the slaves or our own heirs left in the building. They’ve got some device that lets them take our daughters to their plane, something that only functions one night a month, and only until dawn. That night is tonight, and my Eleanir and Michellia are already there! I need you to get in before the sun rises and deactivate or destroy whatever allows them to keep stealing our people. If that prevents them from ever threatening us and holding the Penumbral Accords over our heads again, even better.”

Dreng leans forward. “You understand, I’m sure, how valuable our relationship with the Blakros family is to the Decemvirate. Their assets at the museum are immense, and assisting the Lady Hamaria tonight will go along way to ensuring that both her family and our organization can form a long-lasting alliance that will benefit all parties.” He glances at Hamaria, who nods once in agreement. “Hurry to Blakros Museum, friends. There isn’t much time!”

Korgaar - a burly, muscular dwarf clad in mail and wielding a variety of dwarf-made weapons - arches a luxuriant eyebrow at Hamaria's confession. As the details emerge, his eyebrows dance across his brow as he opens his mouth aghast. Several times the dwarf appears to want to speak - but he bites his tongue until the Venture Captain finishes.

"A bad deal indeed!" Korgaar harrumphs. "And you know nothing of your erstwhile allies? Are we to travel into the unknown? Forewarned is forearmed, after all!"

A halfling cloaked in a long coat, gives a simple nod.

"Trouble at the Blakros again. Hrm." He mumbles from beneath the brim of a hat perhaps too large for his head.

A large, bulky half-orc woman wearing a red robe emblazoned with bizarre symbols and a greataxe slung across her back looks around, appearing either dazed or viewing a place very different from this one. Howirk is easily able to learn that the wealthy and prominent House Blakros is a large, extended clan of eccentrics with trade contacts rivaling those of the Aspis Consortium, who made most of their money selling valuable antiquities across the border between Taldor and Qadira. Their daughters are known far and wide for their beauty, and marrying a Blakros woman is a sure path to power and riches.

Rise of the Runelords Pt2|RotRL Pt 3| Giantslayer|Emerald Spire| CORE Emerald Spire

With light from two sources, the more-nyctalopic members of the party are able to avoid tripping over loose paving stones or running into each other (a good thing, as Leon could do serious damage to Alton or Howirk). The way to the Blakros Museum is well-known to anyone who's spent much time at the Grand Lodge, so there are no issues finding it. Dim light gleams from the many windows studding the front and sides of the gothic building, and from the wide-open doors at the front. Nothing moves, though...at least as far as anyone can tell from outside.

As the party approaches the doors, they can see great pillars of hewn black stone supporting the vaulted ceiling. Braziers are mounted on the pillars, and about half cast white radiance from what the arcane casters recognize as continual light effects. The others are lightless. A fossilized dinosaur skeleton sits on a plinth in the northwest corner of the room.

As the party crosses the threshold the air seems to ripple, and all visible surfaces inside the building shimmer. The effect dies away almost as soon as it started, but in its wake the hall is changed in ways both subtle and obvious. All surfaces are covered in shadow, and the remaining braziers glow blue.

Leon and Alton, make caster level checks vs. DC 12. Leon, use the CL for the wayfinder (it's CL 5).

Korgaar, I think you have to exceed the check by 5 to get another piece of useful information, but you certainly know it's undead; if you've fought skeletons before, it's a reasonable assumption that it'll have damage resistance to piercing and slashing weapons.

Korgaar's missile and Howirk's ray both hit, damaging the skeleton. Eveleth's spell sends it fleeing back into the corner while Alton loads his crossbow.

Round 2:

Initiative order
Leon-
Skeleton-
Alton-
Korgaar
Eveleth
Howirk

Leon is up! The skeleton hasn't had a chance to move yet, so it's still in reach.

Dice rolls:
1d20 ⇒ 10
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

The brute steps to the side and unleashes a heavy handed chop, trying to just brute force the thing into submission.

”Dat hurt, gonna knock ya down, aight?”

MW Scythe: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Scythe Crit?!?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

for Slashing Crit: 8d4 + 28 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 3, 4, 4, 2, 3) + 28 = 50

I’m gonna cry if that Crit doesn’t confirm or they are immune, lol.

Nice shot! It's got DR, but not that much.

Leon's blow forcibly deanimates the skelesaurus, sending bone shards flying across the chamber.

Out of combat!

Korgaar looks down at the tip of his wand, then over at the big human's scythe, and frowns. His wild eyebrows dance across his brow in consternation. "Ah! Never underestimate the power of blade-magic! Right, big man?!"

I'm glad he's on our side. At least I hope he's on our side.

The big man shrugs, ”Naw, dat skele was jus real old, rah?” He taps the scythe on the ground, ”Dis cuts wheet? Huh. I figahd it jus looked scareh. Usually jus punch peepah.”

Putting the incredibly deadly weapon away he pulls out a wand, ”Annubuddeh make dis healy stick wahk? Da ting bit meh.”
