Old tech has always fascinated Runner.
He would spend hours watching Seth work wonders with the machines in his workshop back at Walker's.
Much he did not understand but some of it made sense to him.

THIS, however, made no sense and creeped him the F*ck Out!
-
As the screen flickered to life, the cables attached to the iguana's eye sockets begin to pulsate.
A green glow seeps out from around the eyelids and a bit of black ooze also.
Other cables, seemingly buried deep into the reptilian bodies, twist and suck at the plump leathery torsos, apparently pulling energy.
A sticky tongue darts out and slurps up a cricket that strayed too near a gaping mouth.
The attached machinery hums a little louder just then.

"What the Fuh?" is all Runner can mutter as his foot bumps into a mound of shriveled skin and hair partially pushed under the terrarium.
As he bends down to get a closer look, he sees the sheared-off ends of more black cables protruding from the body of a human child.
It is wearing the same military-style uniform as those kids who were helping them downstairs.

Hearing words fly around like knives and wanting nothing more than to duck out and hide from all this, Smoog realizes that the only one who can convince Retzack of his passion and sincerity is Thunk himself so...

Smoog tries something he has been meaning to for a while now and it seems it can wait no longer.
With his Mind-Device he reaches out gently and slowly, announcing his intentions out loud to Thunk.

"Thunk, I have watched and listened to you for weeks now and I have long suspected you are only speech deficient and not mull-headed.
Use me to speak thru.
I open the way thru my mind and you can speak thru me if you desire."

That evil Necromancer and his giant zombie amalgamation were quite terrifying and dangerous... not that great a challenge huh? . Smoog whispers to himself.

Then Smoog's gaze turns toward Tanard but his words are aimed at Thunk.
Dragons have always been sacred to us Kobolds.
Tanard is our Queen; our Future; our very Life and Breath.
I will devote all I have, all I am, to Her service and Her glory.
Thunk, you are now Her Priesto-Primo, Her Champion and Her Loyalty Focus.
You now guide my zealot's passion and advise me spiritually.
I swear to do Red 'Nard's will.
I swear to live my life only for Red 'Nard.

Then he addresses Greas on the details of the machine...
"I need a potion brewed from Zephyr Lilies, a rare species of flower found on Marannon, a mountaintop far to the east of here; part of the Green Ridge Mountain Range I think.
It will take us into dwarf territory quite near Lord Krondor's domain."
AND...
I need a dish-shaped metal object fashioned of pure silver which I will mount to the ceiling of the time chamber itself. This will focus the time-dilating energies into a coherent sphere around the subjects."

So many things were happening so fast that Smoog was having trouble prioritizing the most important missions and needed some advice from the others.

Rounding up Retzack and Greas he heads back up to find the rest of his group gathered in the Library Stained Glass room.
Smoog then starts in with a few thoughts and observations aimed mostly at Sees, Thunk and Krish but Oadir and the others are certainly consulted and included.

"We are quickly taking on the huge task of completely liberating or subjugating; depending on how you view the issue; the city of ESTR.
We could of course leave that business to the newly freed slaves leaving us free to continue our Dragonslayer hunt.
Now that Tanard's existence has been made public, we have more to worry about and keeping her safe will be much more difficult.
I had thought about trying to magically age her into adulthood quickly so she will be more able to protect herself but that project requires several difficulties that we do not have time for right now...so...

What next?
Do we commandeer an airship and go after Krondor?
Do we gather the items I need for the Age-Machine?
Do we head after Twinkletoes? or that nasty Elf-Lord?

The loss of Hegh is hitting everyone pretty hard.

Working on the outside chance that these reptilian relatives might be bent to their will,
Smoog sends crude mental images to the Crocogators in hopes of conveying that
they, the Kobolds, have just opened up a smorgasbord of softskin meals free for the taking upstairs.

After repairing the most significant damage to his Magno-Ray, Smoog turns his attention to the Eye-Enhancement-Engraphinizer.
He spins it, scrutinizes it, scans it for inscriptions.
Caresses it; measures it; tests its weight.
He scribbles some notes on its properties and sketches some details along the margins of his field notes.
As he holds it closely to his right eye, he flips a switch (maybe accidentally; maybe subconsciously) and screams in pain.
When he looks up, other see the device firmly embedded into his skull, fully replacing his biological eye and infusing its mechanical abilities deeply into the socket.
A wisp of smoke and a brief burst of laser hit the ceiling as Smoog passes out and falls back onto the floor.
A trickle of blood trails down his cheek and drips onto the stone floor.
After a few moments Smoog regains his senses and props himself up on his elbows.

Smoog stares into Garth's eyes as the blood pours from his neck and the life leaves his body.

I only said I wouldn't leave you a vegetable.

When the black-skinned beauty releases Garth's lifeless body, Smoog nods at her in approval and returns to his mapping endeavor.

After retrieving the Shock Stick from his pile of gear, Smoog calmly walks over to Garth and shocks him until he is unconscious.
He then walks back to where he had been sitting and proceeds with his previous mission.

Smoog breathes an inner sigh of relief as Sees asserts her usual place in the Klan as the Bossy Bloviating Bully they all have come to know and love.
He also is relieved to have been assigned a task.
Smoog packs away the spellbook he and Hegh had been discussing and approaches the Spirit Shaman...

"Spiritmaster Krish, the task of locating the Time Temple within ERST has been handed to us.
These Temples have proven to be not only a treasure trove of knowledge and ancient technology but also very defensible and would make a perfect secret base for our long-term campaign against the Longlegs.
I have a general idea of the city layout but we need a more detailed view to use in planning future missions.

I propose to travel the Mental Realm and secretly skip from brain to brain almost as if playing a game of Hop-the-Scotch.
There must be an endless web of interconnected brains running thru ESTR, whether they be insect, animal or sentient being.
Can you consult the spirits and gather location information from them as well and we can then put together a map of this city for all to use.
Also, please watch over my trance. If you need me back just shake me and call my name."

Smoog then settles down in a comfortable seated position to begin his psychic trip.
This time he will leave a small residual consciousness to maintain his body and act as a recall switch if needed but the majority of his mental energy assumes the tightly packed shape he had used before.
Then he whispers to a nearby mind...

Mentally Project out thru the Psychic Voice Modulator: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 4) + 3 = 11

Then up and out he goes, leapfrogging from brain to brain, memorizing the street layout, the important buildings such as blacksmiths, apothecarys and city hall.
He hitchhikes along each psychic vehicle; the drivers of each never knowing he was there.
If at any time he senses the Deathclaw, he steers wide of that mind.
Near the end of the trip he also plans to hijack a sparrow or other winged creature and swoop once around the city to confirm the overall layout and set his bearings true.

Now that they were together in a calm environment; not in the heat of battle or being chased; Smoog and Kibra have a chance to talk at length about a topic they share common interests in.
The conversation skips around and covers all aspects of the spring trap contrivance. Smoog references his manuals and encyclopedias and shares the story of how he found them.

When this happens and thoughts of home flood his memory....Smoog pauses.

"I miss Falla.
I do not know whether you knew she and I had... feelings for each other,
but I wanted to let you know I am sorry for your loss.
She may have been just one of your many sisters but she was special to me.
Ever since we found you and sprung you from the Orc Slavers jail, I have been vacillating between joy and anger.
Happy that you are alive; mad that it is you and not her that we found.
It is not your fault the circumstances of our reunion and you have no guilt in it, but it is something I must work thru and let it go..."

Smoog stares at Kibra for a few seconds, letting the memory of Falla take an appropriate place in his mind; trying to let go of the misplaced anger he feels towards Kibra.

Then his expression snaps into surprised excitement.

"I GOT IT! We don't make a trap for your arrows, we make your arrows TRAPS!"

Smoog looks up from his studies when he senses a "Mental Disturbance".
His recent run-in with the Mental Realm has temporarily made him sensitive to the gathering of minds and the Hegh/Sees/Tanard confluence piques his feelers.

He smiles when Hegh emerges from Sees tent and he returns his attention to his studies...

Well, Hegh has finally stepped up and taken her head on.
Bravo. Her maternal needs are paramount in the continuation of our Klan.
Better he than Greas or... well... yeah, Bravo Hegh.

So much has happened in the last few days, Smoog sits down in a corner of their new safe place and rewinds the action in his mind, contemplating each new companion...
Kind of a first take on Bonds or at least framework for them

First they saved Kibra and Krish from the Orc Slavers in the hills.
One he thought he knew well and the other poses to be an enigma.

I wonder if Falla ever told her brother Kibra about us?

Krish seems to be able to harness spirits as easily as I can harness physics. I wonder where they cross over?

Then the slaves from ESTR who he just now has time to fully ponder...

Greas, why did we have to find Greas? Is his heart still as black as his scales?

Tessith seems wise. What tribe does he come from?

Oadir the Shadowcaster is half-a-deamon? I didn't think those beings could exist on our plane for very long. What holds him here?

and Retzack a goblin necromancer? No, he is more of a re-animator, a creepy-crawly puppet master. I must study the brain-webs he has with them.

Runner uses a scrap of leather ripped from his driver clothes to wrap his hand and stop the bleeding.
He looks at Scarlet and tries to bolster his courage but the memory of his captivity and near death from the Void Vision still have him a bit jumpy and not thinking straight.

"Kibra, Sees does NOT know where she is going and she definitely is not acting like herself right now.
Something is wrong; she should be chiding us and riding us and telling us how inadequate we all are.
I am worried that the stress of our protracted ordeal coupled with her recent separation from Tanard have caused her to regress or withdraw into herself.
Will you scout ahead down the straight center tunnel? We need to find a secure hideout. Something we can barricade, trap and defend."

Now to have a look at what is troubling Sees... I hope my serendipitous trip into the Mental Realm has prepped me enough to try this...

Smoog gently pushes a small bit of his consciousness out into the Mental Plane he had just traveled. Just enough to perceive the tubes he now knows connect every brain like an invisible spiders web.
He looks to see if any outside forces could be influencing Sees and her uncharacteristic behavior as of late...
Discern Realities about Sees with Logic: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 5) + 3 = 11
I realize any insight this move might provide will be player information not DM information so Bastian, fell free to share or hide as much as you think this deserves.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the new players.
I loved the original 8 we had and thought I had lucked out joining such an outstanding group of players (which they all we/are).
I was very sad when the 4 who left us disappeared but...
Wow! Thanks for stepping up and being awesome NEW players.
Your character interpretations are all so inspiring and I look forward to finding out what crazy-awesome story we create together.

After a brief moment of disorientation, Smoog peers out through the skull of the human guard.
Everything and everyone looks pale and transparent; moving in slow-motion.
He on the other hand, is a flickering blue flame floating on a sea of smoke and mist.
The Guard’s mind is here also, a blob of purple glowing energy, aware of Smoog’s intrusion into his Mindspace.
It bubbles and lurches toward him but Smoog’s sharp mind is nimble, even in this foreign environment.
Defy Danger Int: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 4) + 3 = 11

Attempting to take control of this body would not be difficult but poses severe danger of becoming permanently entwined within.
He would sink into it like quicksand and not be able to extract himself easily.
That is a prospect Smoog is not willing to risk, so he concentrates on staying separate, staying whole.

As the battle in the physical world rages around him, he can now see the pulsating pink tendrils that still leash his kobold mind to the guard’s mind, and thinner weaker ones still attached to the other guards he had targeted but did not influence.
They are loose, jelly-like ribbons bouncing and undulating even as they slowly shrink and wither.

I need to get back to my own body quickly, before this tenuous connection frays into nothingness. But I need an energy source to jolt the line back to life enough for the transfer.

At that moment, Smoog hears then sees the cascading ripples of Sees-Death’s Aid spell rushing toward him to fill the room.

Well there is the wave. Now I just need something suitable to ride on.

Coalescing his thought into a sharp spike, Smoog stabs at the guard’s mind and slices off a chunk of purple mind energy to use as a surfboard.

I am also hoping this affects the guard’s ability to function in the physical world by confusing or distracting him for a while.

"Aww, Briny Blisterfarts! What the Hells happened?"

The mayhem of melee momentarily mesmerize the Mechano-Wizard but after a few seconds of regaining his bearings, Smoog spies a close knot of soldiers edging towards the stage area.

"Tackle the Dragonborn! Hold him down!", Smoog commands them thru a mind-spoken command.

Smoog aims for the largest grouping of soldiers near the center of action and then readies his magno-gun for any opportune targets that present themselves.

The day Gorlaug died…:

Smoog’s hands gripped the hafts of his mining picks with the intimate familiarity of a lover.
All week he had been cutting a path thru the rock intending to connect the main supply tunnel to an air vent and tertiary maintenance tubes.
He worked quickly and accurately; more so than any others on his tunnel team and Smoog suspected that was why Brogg the foreman allowed him to work alone.
As he worked he hummed a little song he favored that kept his mind occupied during long digging shifts…
The song goes....

There was no warning when the ‘Miner’s Death’ struck and the mountain started shaking.
Smoog tried to scramble to an arched doorway for cover but the quake split the floor under him and he fell.
When the mountain finally stopped rumbling, and the dust settled, Smoog found himself in an altogether unfamiliar area.
Here the stonework was straight and smooth, unlike the rounded, sweeping curves kobolds usually leave behind;
geometric patterns and ancient lettering covered the middle third of each wall.

Smoog’s claws traced and followed the newly uncovered stonework as he headed up, (or what he perceived to be up), towards the surface.
He could now hear a low humming, like the thrum of cave crickets only lower.
As he headed toward the sound, Smoog noticed that all other sounds of the Mountain were gone; no drip of condensed water, no whisper of drafty air; no creak of support timbers holding up new construction.

Then suddenly the tunnel opened up into a cluttered room.
Not large but big enough to hold quite a bit of workroom apparatus.
All around were benches piled high with gears, springs, cranks and assorted gadgets.
He saw rows of tubes, spiralling wires and bric-a-brac of every kind.
His eyes ended their wandering in the center of the room on what appeared to be a storage rack full of finished gear.
This is where he found Steamer 1.0 (rebuilt after the Necromancer battle into Steamer 2.0), the pink-lensed goggles and the magnetic ray device.
That fortuitous discovery coupled with the catastrophic events atop Moontower Mountain had forced Smoog onto a path he would never have dreamed taking.
Now if he could only find his way out (but that is another story…)

After Runner sets a few triggers and traps in the electrical system of Brando so no one can just start 'er up and drive away, he follows after the cave hunters.

He walks and thinks.

Will I forever be the punching bag for others? the butt of their jokes?

Smoog slips back into his familiar coping mechanisms;
he retreats back into his agile mind, memorizing the number and location of clouds in the sky
(which somehow he has counted in a single glance),
rhyming words from A to Z and back again,
touching his thumbs to the tips of each finger three times;
yes, sets of threes always seemed to calm him down.
His head clears and the melancholy recedes.

He looks down at his gear, feels the embrace of metal and gears.
His hands reach up and feel the goggles that now seem such a natural part of his face he almost forgot they were there.
His metal tail, all the parts of his new self.

I am fine with the tense bickering between Smoog and Sees.
They feel like they are the two "weakest" kobolds in traditional terms and are fighting each other to not be last.
Of course they are allot more powerful than they realize and might actually be fighting for leadership?
Sees has the added dimension of her sexual needs and motherhood issues that make her more volatile but Smoog has been picked on his entire life and just kind of lets it slide.

Smoog wipes a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth and considers once again whether the dirge has full control of her faculties?

Ice madness... the same that holds Hegh... and any he anoints with his blood gift is susceptible.

As his wings retreat back into his body, Smoog turns and heads southeast.

One of the coolest thing I have come to appreciate about these PbtA games is that you can just narrate the 'action movie' in your head and let the others who are more familiar with the game's nuts and bolts fill in the rest.

Smoog tries out an idea that just sprang into his head.
Walking backwards, he aims his steamer at his footprints and tries to erase them with a jet of steam.
In this environment the vapor will probably evaporate quickly but he hopes the footprints will as well.
When Thunk rejoins them and they have made a new path, he can erase the path and Sees can jam the noses of the Warg trackers with rose or cinnamon from her perfume bottle.

Smoog grasps Sees idea immediately and starts piecing together the orc horn blasts into a pattern of pitch, rhythm, distance and duration.

Since group cohesion is a goal, would a combined trip from Walker's to Caves to Zoo and back be too much for a day's outing?
If Runner goes with the main group, his rig can host the big guns on the roof rack mount and carry Runner, Abbot and 2 other people.
I-94 east to explore the caves for a few hours and then south on 35E to the Zoo would keep them clear of the trouble around the airport and maybe make it back in time for Dust's Rave/Religion/Awesome party.

Smoog is taken aback by Hegh's request.
He had assumed he was a part of this team but now he felt Hegh was actually relying on him.
They all had come so far in such a short time...
Each in his own way had overcome so much.
Now a real test was before them.
The first of those personally responsible for their collective aching loss was about to meet his end.

Pork has 5-6 under his control thru use of his new powers.
Flung is in the temple sneaking after the big eye.
Elf & Dwarf and their human men-at arms are waiting for us outside.
the rest of the Kobolds are all ready to enter the temple...
Oh, and Grick might have Zombie Fever.

How Smoog Got His Name

The full story within...:
 
A majority of Kobold families have adopted the modern era convention for naming offspring.
That is to say that they modify or combine the mothers/grandmothers name with
the fathers/grandfathers name in some way to perpetuate  a theme through the family.
Larger families may have to go out to Aunts and Uncles but with creativity and persistence unique  names are always readily available.

Some Kobolds choose to adopt new names as they grow to reflect their advancement through occupations. 
Guilds and Crafter­Unions also use tools, materials or techniques as name s eeds.

Smoog suspects Thunk and Flung use warrior ethos names. 
Pork on the other hand; well he does kinda look like a pig.

Still others have new names thrust upon them through traumatic events in their lives like Smoog’s uncle Bugbelcher and most recently, Sees­Death
This is also why  Smoog sometimes thinks that Hegh should be addressed as Borta­Ess but it is   not his place to name. 
Only the individual can claim the new name or an elder of the clan can  bestow it.

I wonder who the Elder of our clan is now that everyone else is dead. 
Probably Fssst, he  seems oldest and is quite experienced and wise. 
Grick might have a claim to Elder by  virtue of his Spirit­Guide connections. 
Sees wants to be Elder but she is no older than I  am.

Although these are the more common ways names are given, there is another naming way that has almost been lost to time. 
Smoog has chosen to honor his mother's death by keeping  his birth name derived from this most ancient of dragon naming rituals.    
In keeping with the idea that dragons are eternal (or at least very long lived), dragon names are  likewise a symbol of that eternity. 
Usually quite long and elaborate, the names are scribed onto  the eggshell while the unhatched baby still resides within the egg.  
The mothers use delicate filigree to  form the name into a continuous loop.

As such, ancient dragon names are all but unpronounceable due to the fact that they have no  true beginning or end. 
To speak a dragon’s true name would be an infinite endeavor.    
Since that would be impractical, the ancient dragon ritual has one more component to decide on the spoken name for the dragon. 
When the hatchling emerges from the eggshell, whichever  shard remains in its mouth becomes the young dragons common and speakable name.

Smoog uses the hellhound collar and the birdcage he found to cobble together a 'seat' that Sees can use to ride on Hegh.
It will more or less let them move as one and she can use her feet to guide him around.

Not a big deal but Smoog (not Flung) and Sees share Bolgir as an enemy from when he was a foreman of Smoog's tunnel team and they were digging waste removal tunnels that Scoops used. Smoog and Scoops met there and were both harassed and bullied by Bolgir. This is the basis for the bond we have with each other.
