Pathfinder and Starfinder Society Now on Foundry VTT!

Friday, September 8th, 2023

Hello, finders of (digital) paths and stars!

As you may have heard, we recently announced our intention to provide full support for both Pathfinder Society’s Year of Unfettered Exploration and the Starfinder Society’s Year of Fortune’s Fall on Foundry Virtual Tabletop. If you’ve had the opportunity to check out one of our premium Adventure Path modules or our first foray into Pathfinder and Starfinder Society support earlier this year, you might know what this entails, but what if you haven’t? Also, what’s with all of these different versions? What’s a Deluxe Edition? An Asset Pack? Settle down there, hypothetical question asker, and allow us to answer those inquiries with words and screenshots.

Browse all Foundry Virtual Tabletop products here!

First, let’s talk about the plethora of cool features you get from every Paizo Foundry module (most developed by our good friends at Sigil Services). Included with each module, you’ll find detailed, high-resolution maps for every encounter, pre-rigged with walls, lighting, and ambient sound effects. You’ll find custom battle tokens for every monster and NPC appearing in any scenario, even those without art in the published adventure. You’ll find a suite of powerful macros to automate hazards, scene transitions, audio triggers, and more—our Organized Play modules even include macros to automatically place tokens on the battlefield and scale your encounters to challenge parties of any size and level, as well as full support for Society boons and printable Chronicle Sheets for recording and reporting your Society-legal escapades.

Each of our Organized Play Foundry modules is a single purchase that will grant you support for every adventure released so far in the season, with more automatically added in free updates as they release in PDF format. That means that if you buy our full-season Pathfinder Society module today, it will include only the first two scenarios, but by the time the season wraps up next year, it’ll contain all 20. If you’re not ready to commit to a full year of content up front, that’s OK; we’re also offering modules that only grant the scenarios released during the first (or latter) half of the season.

We’re also offering different versions of each module to cater to different audiences. When we released our first Starfinder and Pathfinder Society modules at PaizoCon, we released them as “asset packs” that contained all of the tokens, maps, and other goodies but didn’t include the actual adventures, allowing us to offer them more cheaply to players who already had the PDFs or preferred to purchase them separately (or who weren’t interested in Society Play at all and just wanted a collection of prepped high-quality maps and tokens to incorporate into their own campaigns). We’re still offering that option, but by popular demand, we’re alsooffering each module in a “deluxe edition” that bakes in everything you need to run the adventures, including every scenario converted into a beautifully styled journal that’s been fully integrated with all of the supplementary content from the asset pack. For just $2.50 more than the cost of a Society PDF ($1.50 if you grab the whole season at once), you’ll get everything you need to run your games with the click of a mouse—zero setup required!

Sounds cool, right? Want to see them in action? Well, good news: we’ll be showcasing these awesome offerings in two upcoming live-streamed sessions GMed by esteemed Paizo developer and virtual tabletop veteran Jason Keeley (dates TBD). First we’ll have a group of adventurers played by Paizo employees Katina Davis, Emma Simpson, Rue Dickey, and Jackson Wood as they try not to get themselves killed playing through Pathfinder Society 5-01: Year of Unfettered Exploration. And then following that, a different group played by Sol St. John, Dustin Knight, Jenny Jarzabski, and Jessica Catalan will also try not to die, but in space, as they help choose a new First Seeker in Starfinder Society Scenario 6-06: Tomorrow's Seekers!

We’re super proud of our first-party Foundry VTT content, but that’s not the only way to play Pathfinder and Starfinder online. If you prefer another platform, don’t worry – there’s a ton of Paizo content to choose from on Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Alchemy RPG, and nearly every other virtual tabletop out there, with more being added every day.

Excited? So are we! The future’s looking bright for Paizo content on virtual tabletops, and we’re all looking forward to bringing you lots more of it in the near future!

Such an incredible option! The Foundry VTT integration is ULTRA nice.

My GM is looking at this but is a bit confused on how it works. If he already has a subscription for the season adventures in PDF, does he get a discount on the package like the APs do?

Or does he need to buy the second option that doesn't come with the adventures? And in that case, does he then need to set up the adventures in Foundry with steps that would already be done in the more expensive package?

Thanks. I'm just unclear on if the two are the same thing in Foundry and one just also comes with the adventure PDFs, or if the cheaper one doesn't have things set up and you'll have to do that work yourself?

Because we're selling each entire multi-scenario season (or half of one) as a single pack instead of selling individual scenarios, we don't currently offer a discount for owning the PDFs the way we do with our Adventure Path modules. The idea is that if you already own or plan to purchase the Society PDFs, or if you're a VO who gets them for free, you can buy the cheaper Asset Pack instead of the Deluxe Edition and just load your PDFs into Foundry using one of the various PDF reader modules available (or just have them open on another screen).

In any case, the Asset Pack still includes all of the tokens, maps, and macros as the Deluxe Edition, so all of the setup is still done for you. The only thing you're missing from the Deluxe Edition are the benefits of having the adventure content integrated into journal entries inside Foundry: cross-linking with system compendium entries, one-click skill checks, that sort of thing. Nothing you can't do manually if you've got the PDFs handy.

The Deluxe PFS is amazing. That is all.

Thanks very much! As someone who purchased the Asset Pack for SFS 6-01 and 6-02, are there still plans to update those for Foundry v11 (and future updates)? Or did I just toss y’all a $12 tip? :D

I have visited the thread of updates and see that the status is “NO”, just checking to make sure those two packs are going to be downloadable someday. Thanks!

Thanks, that helps clear it up!

Will we get the opportunity to see what the various journal entries look like during the livestreams? I doubt I'm the only one who'll consider picking up the deluxe packs depending on how much I like the journal entries.

As far as deluxe pack vs pdfs + assets pack goes... Is there any consideration of offering discounts in the future? (Including on the pdfs).
For those of us who prefer to prep with a printed copy or run both in-person and online, it'd be nice to have both. As wonderful as journal entries may be, having the option to mark up a scenario while reading is always appreciated!

Super excited to see first party support for society adventures for foundry! I think at $7.50/scenario it is one heck of a deal. Even with a pdf importer I still find myself spending an hour or two prepping for each adventure, and this will be a tremendous time saver. Hopefully this sells well and we continue to see more content like this!

Incidentally, there's no chance of any of the older scenarios getting this treatment, is there?

We are still a bit behind on updating some of our earlier Organized Play offerings for v11; the bigger our library gets, the more is involved in getting everything up to speed after a major update (which, incidentally, was another consideration in our decision to release the Society modules in multi-scenario collections). The asset packs that were released at PaizoCon will be absolutely updated for v11 compatibility sooner rather than later, however. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I'm not sure how much of the journals you'll be seeing in the livestreams (it depends whose view is being displayed in OBS), but in addition to the screenshot in the article, we have screenshots of both the SFS journals and PFS journals in our module listings on foundryvtt.com (and will be adding them to our own store pages shortly).

There's always that possibility, but it's tricky to make the numbers work once we add PDFs (or PDF discounts) to the mix, because then we have to balance the price of the Foundry module around the price of the PDF. This was a big part of the reason why our original release at PaizoCon only offered asset packs and didn't even offer an option to include journals; by making a supplementary product with just the tokens and maps and macros, we could offer support for every scenario PDF for a flat $4 without having to consider whether you'd gotten the PDF for full price, at a subscriber discount, or for free. (I went into some of that rationale here at the time.) Obviously, your feedback did end up convincing us to offer an option with fully integrated journals after all, but at least as of right now, the best/cheapest option if you want a Foundry module and the PDFs is still going to be the asset pack.

Now, all that being said, in the future? Who knows. As usual, it'll all depend on the reaction we get to the stuff we're offering now. :)

Great to hear it! We're certainly hoping for the same.

As for updating older scenarios ... we don't currently have any plans to do anything like that, but obviously if these new releases are a smash hit, or we otherwise see a ton of community interest in returning to older stuff, we'll certainly consider it. We weren't initially planning on making Deluxe Edition Society modules either, but a bunch of you really wanted them, so here we are!

More than fair. Here's to hoping, I'd love to start offering an online society game and these will make that a lot easier.

So to avoid my whole integrate the pdf thing. I can now just order the deluxe. Hooray!!! But it will mean I will cancel my society subscription

The actual play of Jason Keeley (GM), Sol St. John, Dustin Knight, Jenny Jarzabski, and Jessica Catalan in Starfinder Society Scenario 6-06: Tomorrow's Seekers will premiere on Twitch and YouTube tomorrow at 4 PM Pacific!

Now not can't install Starfinder on Foundry V12 :(

One product that I personally would love to see is a premium module that contains all of the repeatable scenarios from the first 4 seasons of Pathfinder Society (Second Edition). In my experience these scenarios still get run a lot and would be something I would definitely use as someone who is just starting out running PFS scenarios online.
