The Scales of Fate

Thursday, July 9, 2020

Pethjun tightens the bandage around her left bicep, wincing just a bit as the fibers of the cloth meet the open wound. “So, you want more Sewer Dragons in your Society, huh? How we gonna protect ourselves from things like this,” Pethjun kicks the slain body of a nearby otyugh, “if you take all our best warriors and explorers?” Trapmaster Tok and Chief Yiddlepode, standing nearby, nod their heads and turn to their Pathfinder friend Drandle Dreng, waiting for an answer.

“Well,” Dreng begins, “didn’t we come down here and help you put these things down before too many kobolds got hurt? And just think of how much stronger your tribe might become when veteran Pathfinders retire back here, bringing their magic weapons, arcane secrets, and experience with them? The Society and the Sewer Dragons have been allies for a long time; let’s make it official. I’ve already convinced Valsin that we need you all now more than ever, and you need us. Who warned you about that merchant who was giving you a bad deal on the maps and relics you were looking to trade, eh?”

Red kobold holding a short spear

Yiddlepode steps forward before Pethjun can respond, drawing herself up to her full height and managing to make it seem much more impressive than the three feet she actually stands. “You’re a good friend, Dreng. And the Pathfinders have treated us fairly for all the years we’ve known each other.” Yiddlepode turns to the kobolds standing nearby, many wounded from the recent fight, but all focused intently on the current conversation. “Spread the word! From this day forward, any Sewer Dragon who wishes to join the Pathfinder Society may do so with my blessing. It is a large world, with much change and much opportunity swirling around us. Let us take this opportunity to spread our influence and gain new knowledge. Let the world to come be shaped by dragons!”

As Dreng watches the cheering kobolds pump their scaled fists into the air, a broad guffaw cracks his face in two, his head rolling back in unrestrained mirth. “Let the world to come be shaped by dragons, indeed” the venture-captain laughs, before a dark cloud passes across his features. “I expect we will need nothing less than dragons on our side in the days to come.”

The Pathfinder Society organized play campaign has been, since its inception, a game where the community of players across the world can shape the stories we tell and play a hand in determining the course of Golarion. Over the years, the Society has completed many adventures alongside kobold allies, including both the Sewer Dragons and other kobold tribes across the Inner Sea and beyond. It is my pleasure to announce that, when the Advanced Player’s Guide releases in August, kobolds will be joining the ranks of always-available ancestries for Pathfinder Society players. We’re excited to meet the new kobold recruits in just a few short weeks! Until then…

Explore! Report! Cooperate! (And maybe set a few traps for unwary enemies!)

I have a question about the incoming Kobold Lore. Is it possible to add in metallic types for the kobolds, maybe a rare ancestry, please? I really, really want to become a copper/gold/silver mini-Dragonkin! :)

Pretty sure they announced those will indeed be options in the APG.

Will this be for people playing PFS 1e or just 2e? (I still haven’t made the transition to 2e not sure when or if I will - still have a lot of games and scenarios in 1e I want to play and run). But having a Kobold would be really fun.... (I have the chronicle that would allow it once but a full PC would be really fun)

I thought the resident T-Rex said no metallic kobolds in Golarion though.

Uh.... Question!

Does that mean that the Tengu is going to be an Uncommon Ancestry?

If they do that it might lead to a lot of confusion with the Iconic Oracle Korakai (who is Tengu). While some pregens have odd rules interactions to dangle what in front of players and etc, it'd probably be a lackluster move to ACP-gate an Iconic race.

In the unlikely event they restrict Tengu based on the above, at least smoldragons will be an option...

:D Thank you Rysky and NECR0G1ANT! I'm eager to see how we get to access the metallic types, whether through different ancestries or boons or fame-purchased options.

I'm going to try to make my kobold on July 30th when I get to see all the ancestry options. I'm so jealous of those who got access to the APG early. ;)

Thanks I had missed that. I'd still wonder a bit if metallic koblods are on Golarion, since that does seem like the creative director's call. Even if they were added to the book. Of course even non-LO 2e books are still Golarion default/infused, so I think that divergence is less likely than it would have been in 1e.

Wait, why do you all still have PFS stars and titles, I was told that the introduction of goblins destroyed PFS as every table was overran by psychopathic goblin players, leading to Paizo canceling the programme. Is this some elaborate prank?

So, are kobolds going to be allowed in play after the APG releases? I can just see an all-kobold Society game now.

Seriously, when I started my last PF2 game, I had a table full of goblins. And one half-elf. It was chaotic fun, especially when one of them decided to snack on the dead, diseased cow.

Are you in my lodge? One of our regular tables is a bunch of goblins and one half-elf with darkvision. They routinely cast Darkness during combat and just shut everything down. I see them doing the same tactic playing as Kobolds.

So there's already debate about whether or not Kobolds will actually be playable at release of the APG or not, because it's unknown what Kobold-specific options will be sanctioned alongside Kobolds as a playable Ancestry. If we have to assume no Kobold Ancestry Feats or Heritages are legal before the full APG sanctioning is released, then it's not really possible to play a Kobold until then.

Michael's post just after this blog stated:

Yep! Kobolds will be allowed for all players when the APG releases.

I hate that I have to ask, but faced with VOs who are saying the other options won't be legal, it really needs clarified. Will all of the Ancestry Feats and Heritages for Kobolds be legal at release of the APG alongside the Kobold Ancestry? Or should people not be planning to play a Kobold at GenCon?

A) Having access to a sanctioned ancestry gives you access to all the common sanctioned heritages and feats associated with that ancestry.

B) Additional Resources will be updated with the Advanced Player's Guide materials in time for GenCon.

There is no reason anyone should be unable to play a kobold at GenCon. Were there any heritages or feats we thought likely to be restricted or changed significantly as part of the sanctioning, we would have mentioned them above.

Kobold plushies or you’re referring to kobolds as plushies? Because I like this new kobold design and would definitely buy some plushies of them.

The latter, and same.

I for one don't really like the new Kobold design. It makes them look too much like horned humanoid snakes.

I kinda agree. I prefer the older head design that looks more draconic. This one is less defined. Snake-like is appropriate or maybe more lizard-like than dragon-like
