Creeping, Crawling, and Claw-Claw-Biting—It's Time to Vote!

Monday, September 21, 2015

The voting for round 3 of RPG Superstar has begun! The survivors of round 1 and round 2 have provided potential new threats to inhabit Golarion! If you want to see what our contestants—Charlie Brooks, William Collins, Jason Evans, Mark Griffin, Taylor Hubler, John Leclaire, Crystal Malarsky, Brian Minhinnick, Walter Sheppard, Jeffrey Swank, Robert Thomson, Philip Tucker, Isaac Volynskiy, Nick Wasko, and Garrick Williams have dream up, you can go check out and vote for their entries now!

While good adventures often center around the acquisition (or destruction!) of creative magic items, monsters are much closer to the heart of what makes memorable adventures in an RPG session. Whether they are dastardly foes, friendly supporters, or just creatures with their own needs and concerns, monsters are among the things PCs interact with the most often. A good monster must combine memorable visuals, an interesting ecology or backstory, solid narrative roles, and well-designed, engaging game mechanics to keep GMs and players interested. The ability to produce monsters that hit all those elements is an excellent sign of a Superstar game designer!

So check your equipment list, make a Perception check, and roll for initiative, because a whole pack of new monsters just entered the field!

A combination of events, in conjunction with exhaustion, contrived to ensure that I couldn't get the forums to work right and then made a very very stupid copy mistake when I was putting my creature into the various places required to make formatting right. I either didn't copy in or accidentally deleted my savings throw line. So basically, self inflicted retardation.

I wish to congratulate all the Top16 for their monsters. I have assessed them all, even if I have not yet posted my comments on all of them and I am delighted to say that each and every one of your creations I will try to use in my game. Some I will add a little oomph, some I will dial back and some I will focus a bit more, but all are great inspired creations.

Well done.

It is sad! I don't know if I will enter again but I appreciate the sympathy. :)

Definitely enter again. It's a fun exercise if nothing else. A lot of us have been submitting stuff for years through this process and it really does help develop traditionally un-used creative muscles.

How often do you just make an encounter if you don't need it for a campaign? The answer for me is not that often! RPGSS, while tooth and claw at times, is still a good way to get creative exercise.

Best of luck to the Top 15. I enjoyed reading and commenting on your entries. A lot of creativity in this lot, that's for certain. Congratulations to those of you that made it this far. For those moving on to the next round, I look forward to seeing your encounters.

I finally(!) finished commenting on all the entries. Even for those whose execution was off, the underlying ideas were exciting, and I enjoyed reading them. Good luck to all the contestants!

It's mostly a matter of time for me. I'll think about it whenever they do it again and see what's in my schedule. :) I do manage a great deal of creative exercise and I design encounters surprisingly often, as well as new spells, items, and certainly locations. However, I do not frequently make creatures, I come up with the ideas and special abilities on occasion but usually delegate the mechanics to my freelancers because it's headache forming to me. So I did learn quite a bit about that and formatting! I have a great deal of respect for all of you who spend time (and math skills) on the contest each year. It certainly requires a great deal of dedication and swift thought! :)

Good luck to those who remain and those who continue to dedicate their time to this and other creative endeavors!
