It'd be nice if it kept track of number of rounds for you. A little counter that increments every time the "Current Combatant" goes back to the top of the list, and resets to 1 when the encounter is reset.

I might just start using this instead of the bulky board I always have with me. Nicely done.

I agree "current round" is a must.

In our game time keeping also involves tracking duration of buffs and debuffs. Without that utility we still have most players and DM separately keeping track of every round and because of that reason I'm out. This app will be amazingly helpful be helpful app once it gets buff debuff duration tracking though. While the DM is setting up the combat the players on their end could be submitting all of their buffs to the app.

Also a question @BJ Hensley. Can you hide mobs on the initiative tracker so you can keep track of things unknown to the party?

You can't at this time, but it's something we're working on. :)

I was not impressed with the original app it was way too slow to get stuff done.

I will have to give the new updates a try.

Edit: Quick criticism none of the Play store App badges make it look like an official Paizo endorsed app. Is there anyway you would be allowed to use the Official Pathfinder P's?

I hope the new updates are more to your liking.

Good idea! I'll see what I can do.

Any plans to add the ability to track the value for conditions? To me that's the final piece to make this application truly useful.

It's something we'd like to do down the road.

We wanted to make sure there were options to connect long-distance and local friends alike! So, you can use Bluetooth (or wifi) to connect those in the same building or make use of Wifi (or cell service) to connect with users around the world.

From what I can tell this is a kind of low-hanging fruit App that is more or less just a digital version of the Magnetic Combat Tracker board that Paizo sells given that it lifts the vast majority of the visuals and UI straight from that product.
I don't need it to be a complete combat manager. But one of the reasons we go digital is because digital tools can automate some of the mundane aspects of a physical tool. If it adds the ability to add notes, it seems like noting specific conditions and removing them on the appropriate round is exactly the kind of the that would convince me to use this over the physical product.

I really like the idea of having a notes space too and it's on our list for the future. :)

Kind of confused by the affiliations here. What's the relationship between Paizo, Digital Dragons Studios, and Lone Wolf Development?

Should I be looking forward to more Paizo official content from DDS in competition with LWD?

Good questions! I can see how that might be confusing! As a polymath who rarely sleeps, I wear a great many hats around the industry and it just so happens that I am the owner of DDS and technically I am still the VP of LWD as well. Though that's mostly just a fancy title, I don't really make many decisions over there, and I haven't done more than part-time post their news since the layoffs over a year ago.

DDS is not in competition with LWD, I just have their blessing to make my own stuff too. LWD focuses more on Character Creation for computers and I focus more on app making for pocket-friendly aids. I have a ton of ideas and I hope to have more apps out for DDS later this year.

Hope that helps!:)

I'm confused why something like this doesn't have health tracking on creatures you add to initiative? I mean, I know that it's not that hard to do this with a dozen other things, but I feel like it would be extremely convenient to have it on-hand all in one place.

The app was really only ever meant to be an interactive mimic of the Combat Tracker but we've already made a number of improvements and I have added your request to the pool of others! :)

Hello all!

I didn't expect this to become an ongoing thread when Paizo invited me to do the guest blog! I'll try to add it to my rotation to check on more often now that I see folks are still chatting here. :)

If you ever have a question, please don't hesitate to reach out via email ( support@ddsapps.com ) or message us on Facebook or Twitter, we're always happy to help and love all the feedback.

Our first update is out now and while it doesn't address everything folks are asking for just yet, it does allow for the bulk adding of combatants, deleting entries as needed, and saving selected GM added combatants for the next encounter. Additionally, we’ve provided a brand new long-press menu to allow for quick edits of individual participants.

1. The app only has portrait mode, and doesn’t rotate to landscape (I would be using it on a tablet.). I hope that gets added.

2. The ability to add a party of characters that can be saved, and to be able to pre-build encounters would be really helpful.

The app seems okay, but needs to be more robust for me to find it useful (others may be happy with what it has now.)

Thanks for the feedback!

I have a pair of questions:

The screenshot shows Azumi as "Confused". Can you also use this to track conditions and hit points (and even better, spells)?

Can you input something like "Add five orcs with initiative +8 and roll initiative for each individually", or would you either have to do "orcs, +8" or "orc 1, +8", "orc 2, +8", and so on?

Currently, the app can label for any of the conditions, but not spells. We have had a lot of requests for spell interaction and are looking into it. :)

If you wanted to have each creature have its own turn rather than just "Orcs" you would need to add in each one individually.

It is!
I downloaded it to try it and get a good feel. Very simple and barebone, but it's a good thing I think. It does the job very well. it even "roll" for you, or you can manually enter the dice value at the same time you put in the character's initiative modifier.
It's "one encounter, one room", and there doesn't seem to be any memory. You can't pre-make characters or save multiple encounters, but if the app crash or is closed without "ending" the encounter, the next time you launch it "restore" it. The APP is still young though, and they are asking for new feature suggestions over social media, so a lot of space to grow.

Thanks for the feedback! We are prioritizing improvements for future updates and can't wait to incorporate what we can.

Paizo Con: The only thing I desire is peace and to be left alone to create.

As the victim in this particular situation, I have watched in public silence as the world dissected my story and speculated as to the intimate details. I looked on and relived these events as people believed, disbelieved, defended me passionately, and cast doubt on the situation. I received many wonderful messages from those who were there or heard what happened, expressions of anger on my behalf and an outpouring of love. And yet I am heartbroken by what I see, not due to the event itself but that these same individuals, who aided me when I was in need, are being verbally assaulted and accused of less than exemplary behavior. So, despite being told that I in no way needed to by countless individuals on all sides of the event, I’ve chosen to speak. I’ve selected Paizo as my medium to do so to ensure that everyone can see my words.

What happened at Paizo Con was not appropriate. The offensive behavior I dealt with from this person was very inappropriate, unwanted, and frankly a bit scary. However, Paizo’s staff did all they could to ensure I was safe, they made all the right offers to take care of the situation, and when I declined some of their suggestions they chose to protect me with their silence. Nearly every member of Paizo’s staff interacted with me in some way during these awful events. Many offered protection, others walked me to my room, spoke out on my behalf, held my hand while I was afraid, and even physically stepped in when the clearly inebriated individual in no way wanted to hear my “No thank you.”. In the end, Lisa Stevens herself shed tears alongside me as she heard my story. Her concern was genuine, her anger fierce, and at no point was there any disbelief. She passionately argued to be able to defend me and doesn’t deserve to be accused of doing anything less than her very best to protect me while I was in her “house”. Paizo made me feel welcome, believed in, and defended me in every way I would allow.

No one tried to silence me, I silenced them.

The individual who stalked me through the halls that day was far too drunk to drive, he had children staying at the convention, and I asked that he be allowed to leave when sober. I also requested the incident be kept as quiet as possible to protect his family. Additionally, several of my friends work at the very company this man represents, I didn’t want their professional lives impacted by a public scandal any more than I wanted anyone else’s to be. Members of Frog God Games checked in on me and handled their side of the mess as they saw fit. I protected others and I tried to protect myself. I’m a private person who’s survived far worse storms than what happened here and I simply wanted to resolve the issue for all involved and put it behind me before it resurfaced more traumatic events in my mind. We all have to choose what hills we die on. I didn't feel the need to make this one mine. I work here. This industry is my life, it’s where my friends are, it’s my creative outlet; the place where I bring to life all the crazy ideas parading through my mind, and all I want to do is take my imagination out for a stroll and create games we all enjoy.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all the people who cared enough to stand up for me, walk beside me, and protect me from the public. I personally consider this matter closed and would prefer everyone else do so as well for the sake of my own privacy and personal sanity. – BJ Hensley

We had all that in mind as well when we started working on Hero Lab Online, before Starfinder was even announced, we just chose to launch it with Starfinder.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Ship Combat is a great reason to go online but it's not the only one!

As seen in our FAQ here are few more ideas of what will eventually be possible HLO. :)

Bringing Hero Lab to an online environment allows us to support a diverse range of devices all over the world! It also has a plethora of added benefits that we simply cannot provide in desktop software. We love Hero Lab Classic just as much as you do, but to provide many of the awesome features our consumers want, we must be in a connected environment with a central server to manage things.
Most of the new capabilities we’ll be pursuing with Hero Lab Online are simply not possible in Hero Lab Classic. Starship combat involving the whole party, for example, would be impossible to manage in the current incarnation of Hero Lab.

Additionally, party loot management, interaction between players and GMs, and player-to-player collaboration are not possible in Hero Lab Classic (e.g. applying buffs, damage, effects, conditions etc.). Hero Lab Online will provide a robust, interactive experience, centered around these capabilities, that everyone can enjoy!

Online Play is a core objective for Hero Lab Online. Having a central server orchestrate everything means that every device can “talk” to each other. Not like a chat system but items like the GM assigning damage for a fireball to four of the five PCs caught within it, with one taking half damage (save made) and another taking none (save made with Evasion). Or a player hitting an Orc that’s run by the GM and assigning 8 damage to it. With the fireball, the player simply acknowledges the damage received. With the Orc, the GM acknowledges the damage. [Note: Examples use Pathfinder, as that game system is by far the most popular among our users, but the concepts apply to any game system.]

Let’s take this a step further. The bard buffs the entire party (e.g. Inspire Courage) and applies that buff to everyone. There’s no need for each player to individually add and configure the buff on their PC. The wizard buffs a few members of the party (e.g. Haste) and chooses which PCs gain that buff. Again, there’s no need to individually add and configure the buff on each PC. Now the bard switches to a different song. Everybody gets swapped over with the new buff instantly. No need for each player to reconfigure things.
The same logic applies to conditions and effects. The wizard casts a spell that causes a group of creatures to be Dazed, so he designates them appropriately and the GM simply confirms them. Another PC uses an ability to trip a creature, assigning it the Prone condition. The GM has a creature use an ability to Stun a PC. It all works smoothly and streamlines the experience for all involved, letting everyone focus more on the game than the fiddly details.

Party loot is another great opportunity here. How does your group currently manage all the extra stuff they’ve acquired? Imagine having a simple repository where that’s all tracked. All the players/PCs can view it. At the end of an encounter, everything the party finds goes into the “stash”. Gear can then be assigned from the stash to individual PCs, and PCs can put stuff back into the stash. Let’s say the party finds a +2 Longsword that gets assigned to the Fighter. Now the +1 Longsword that the Fighter used to have can be assigned to a different PC that is still using a non-magical weapon. With a non-online version of Hero Lab, the stash has to be managed by a single person, and each assignment of gear must be manually handled by each player or the GM. That’s all readily doable for a simple +1 weapon. But what if the gear involved is more complex and needs to be constructed properly by each user? That gets to be quite a hassle. And what if the gear is such that only certain aspects of the item have been revealed by the GM? That’s entirely possible with the online model and utterly impossible without the central server.

Starfinder introduces the concept of a communal starship for the party. That can be easily shared with an online model. And Starfinder combat has different PCs taking on different roles on the ship. With the online model, there are many opportunities to do things that simply can’t be done with a disconnected desktop model.
We have a variety of other new features planned as well, but this should give you a sense of the opportunities that exist with Hero Lab Online and that we’re planning to bring to life within the product.

As we stated in the FAQ, Hero Lab Online caches everything locally and only transmits the data that has changed, allowing us to be very conservative in how much data we’re actually consuming. Use of Hero Lab Online will typically consume less data over the course of a game than browsing your favorite websites for a few minutes, making it extremely realistic to use via mobile connections if you ever have the need.

You will be able to retain your up to 5 licenses for multiple devices and HLO access really will be around 2 dollars a month. We've no intention of charging a high price for it at any point in the future. :)

Open Beta sign-up links will be going out in our newsletter soon and you'll be able to see and play with HLO in a few weeks. We're excited to hear your feedback!

I know it's something new, and maybe a little scary, but I'd love if you'd give it a chance and provide feedback to help us make it even more awesome!

Playground Adventures has launched an exciting new group of quests called After School Adventures! These adventure shorts are designed with busy parents and children in mind. Often we don't have time for a full length adventure so we've been designing quests you can complete in only a few hours, making these perfect for a random afternoon or even as drop in quests in ongoing games. Our first After School Adventure launches a miniature adventure path in wonderland and includes a fun printable board game to interact with. You can find chapter one of Adventures in Wonderland, Chasing the White Rabbit, here.

Another exciting project we've been working on is Fun & Facts. These adventures are designed around educational elements. While we do have full length adventures in the works, our first Fun & Facts release is an After School Adventure short. Madam Margareth’s Magic Potion is a quick jaunt about a young boy who has fallen ill after eating a poisonous mushroom and the only cure lies in an ice cave at the top of a mountain! Can a group of heroes make it to the top of the mountain, face down a fearsome yeti, find the cure, and maybe learn a bit about chemistry on the way? This science based short also includes a fun experiment for everyone to enjoy and you can get it now on the Paizo store. We think it's a lot of fun and Endzeitgeist rated it 5 stars with a seal of approval so hopefully everyone else will too!
