The Gauntlet Will Be Ours!

Friday, May 16, 2014

This Sunday, four members of the Paizo staff will do glorious battle with teams from other game companies for the right to claim The Gauntlet! Over the past week, we've been collecting donations to help our team improve its chances. These donations go directly to Child's Play, a charity that helps sick kids in hospitals around the world by supplying them with toys and games! So far we've raised over $3,000 for the Paizo team, which has earned us 8 "Power Ups" to use during the event. Reaching these goals has also unlocked some rewards for you!

As part of this event, we promised to release a primitive human race for use in your Pathfinder game if we reached $3,000. This is in honor of Ugg-tect, one of the games we will be playing on Sunday during the tournament in which the players take on the role of a caveman building primitive structures.

Download the Primitive Human PDF!

Of course, there are still plenty of other goals we can reach before the event begins on Sunday, including the following:

  • $3,500—Spoiler Reward: Spoilers about the upcoming Advanced Class Guide.
  • $4,000—Card Reward: We will release a PDF featuring the Gauntlet team members as new Ally cards compatible with the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.
  • $4,500—Spoiler Reward: Even more spoilers about the upcoming Advanced Class Guide.
  • $5,000—Audio Reward: We will put together a "dramatic reading" of a chapter from one of our Pathfinder Tales novels, featuring members of the Paizo staff as the characters.

Remember, every dollar donated goes to support Child's Play. If you want to help our team, go to this link, enter your donation and make sure to put "For Paizo" in the comment box so that your donation goes to help our team.

Finally, you will be able to watch the event this Sunday, starting at 3pm (PST). It is being broadcast on twitch.tv through the NPCcast. During the event, we will also be auctioning off a number of Paizo prize packs live during the event. Check out the great products we are putting up for auction!

1. A Core Rulebook signed by the Paizo staff

2. The Ultimate Wrath of the Righteous game pack including

3. Pathfinder Battles Ultimate Dragon Pack including

All proceeds from the auction will go to Child's Play, so make sure to tune in and bid for these great prizes! Thanks again from the team for helping us in the event. We hope to do you proud and bring home The Gauntlet!

Not going down that road again. The last time I tested a rule (even though it was just a joke), folks thought I used it as the basis for making a rules decision. I still see it quoted to this day as if it were real. Ugh..

But yeah.. for the kids. :)

Congratulations! Well fought :)

You mean... you don't base all your rulings on things you test out in the office?

I... I'm shocked. Stunned, I tell you.

Utterly flabbergasted. My gast has never been so flabbered.

My dreams, ruined. Dashed, even. Never will I be able to trust a single spell, nor feat, and don't get me started on (Su) abilities - I thought that's what Cosmo was for. For everything else, there's interns.

In all seriousness, congratulations.

Though I am expecting a feat to appear in the not too distant future about avoiding damage from gauntlets (spikes optional).

Why do people want to see Jason Bulmahn get punched in the face? I sat at the table he was at during the banquet last PaizoCon and he was really nice.

The Gauntlet

In the tumultuous years following the destruction of Azlant and the fall of Thassilon, the Tekritanin League fought against their percieved tyranny of the Jistkan Imperium across northern Garund, bankrolled by the Pharaohs of Ancient Osirion. During this age, a group of champions arose among the Tekritanin League that rallied around the banner of a champion whose name has been lost history. This hero is remembered only by the sole surviving fragment of his mighty armor, known only as the Gauntlet. A champion of the downtrodden, the sick, and the weak, this crusader rallied a group of ten like-minded heroes to his side.

When the Four Pharaohs of Ascension betrayed the Tekritanin League and destroyed their civilization, the champion fell in defense of his allies. Recognizing the power in the surviving gauntlet of his armor, his champions fell to squabbling amongst each other to decide its fate. When the dust from this battle settled, the lone and loyal golem that served the champion in life stood victorious. This sentient construct carried the Gauntlet from the field of battle and disappeared into the pages of history.

Since that time, the Gauntlet has emerged in times of great need and conflict, only to disappear in the midst of a struggle over its power.

Aura strong abjuration, conjuration, evocation, and transmutation; CL 20th; Slot hand; Weight 2 lbs.

DESCRIPTION

This plain, right-handed platemail gauntlet is forged of mithral and padded with ink-black fabric and burgundy leather looks slightly large when worn.

The Gauntlet is a +6 defending, minotaur bane mithral gauntlet. When worn the Gauntlet deals damage as if its wielder were one size category larger. Additionally, the wearer of the Gauntlet may wield one-handed weapons in his right hand as if he were one size category larger. Once per day, as a move action, the wearer of the Gauntlet may remove it and throw it as his feet, targeting a single creature within 30 feet with a challenge as if he were a 20th level Cavalier of the Order of the Land.

Any nongood creature that wears the Gauntlet immediately takes 2d6 points of nonlethal damage and another 2d6 points of nonlethal damage every minute it continues to wear the Gauntlet.

DESTRUCTION

If the wearer of the Gauntlet willingly uses it to slay a child, the Gauntlet immediately shatters dealing 20d8 points of damage (no save) to its wearer and is destroyed. Creatures slain by this damage may only be brought back to life by a miracle or wish

RAMIFICATIONS

Anyone who discovers the Gauntlet inherits the might of heroes, but risks taking up their crusade.

Protection of the Innocent: The bearer of the Gauntlet is tasked with dual purpose, both the protection of the innocent and also the destruction of evil minotaurs. As such those who seek the aid of heroes in protection of the weak or infirm are drawn inexorably to the wearer of the Gauntlet. Furthermore, agents of minotaurs or the masters of such (like the demon lord Baphomet) are incensed by the Gauntlet's very existance and seek to destroy it at all costs.

Fleeting Power: While the Gauntlet is powerful, it is also elusive. When many forces struggle to claim the power of the Gauntlet, it vanishes to aid another hero in more dire need. The Gauntlet will not abandon a bearer in a moment of crisis, though, even if this means putting its mysterious disappearance off by a few days. In extreme cases, the Gauntlet has delayed seeking a new owner for as much as a week, though as soon as its current wielder is out of immediate danger it departs to aid another.

It's the novelty of the thing, I suspect. It started as a joke, but no other team offered up one of their team members to the slaughter (almost literally) for victory of the Gauntlet.

Some people may claim it's because people disagree with errata, FAQs or nerfs, but I kind of doubt that. I really doubt Jason has earned that level of enmity.

Plus, it's amusing.

However, I kind of would like to hear the reasoning behind that guy who donated $1,000 after Jason agreed to the punching and set the goal.

Hey, there are only a few minutes left in the afternoon! I sit in not-so-quiet anticipation of ACG spoilers.

Jason stated in the other thread that the spoilers will be delayed till the morning, but to make up for it he'll throw in a couple extra.

It was a way to express surprise at him setting such a low bar, plus possibly to spur the competition, since at that stage the numbers were quite low. (Though mainly it was just an excuse to donate money to charity).

Spoiler:
In case it isnt clear, I dont really want to watch Jason being punched in the face. :(

Classy Steve. You are my hero! :D

Edit:

spoiler @ Steve:

I had no way of matching you, but I'm still happy I was able to donate $105.
I'm especially glad I donated the last $55 so we reached $3 500. I must admit it was partly for selfish reasons, but in the end it will benefit the kids to so it is a win – win situation.

And now the morning is over and it's afternoon again, the waiting continues, perhaps I should go do a harrowing to determine when the blog(s) will be up.

Can you make it up to us by having multiple members of the Paizo staff take selfies with the gauntlet?

I am intrigued by Liz's idea to have Paizo Staff members doing mundane things while wearing the Infinity Gauntlet.

Alas, the Archetype reward did not get unlocked, as that was only if we took first in the charity drive. Sorry if that was not clear.

This would be an awesome pre-order bonus or something. Get a picture of Jason's punch signed by all the team members :P

Edit: and a beta mox jet.

I am disappointed about not getting an archetype list, but then again looking at the original post I can see the original intent.

(Though I hope Jason's joking)

I will be glad just to get about 10 spoilers(?) and I'm guessing artwork in this upcoming blog. that would be awesome!

So how many spoilers are we getting?
