Just some minor things this time. I am not including entries with comma use errors. They did not appear to break the understanding of item properties.
Ring of Inner Fortitude: The first paragraph has ring of minor fortitude, shouldn't it be ring of minor inner fortitude?
A minor issue (perhaps personal): Wearing a ring of inner fortitude ring does not make the... The use of ring twice seems redundant.
Avalanche Shield: When used to make a shield bash attack, stones fall from the shield and cling to the target of the shield bash.
Caster's Shield: Both instances of caster's shield are not italicized.
After 4 previews, which each had some minor errors in them, I am hopeful that you just picked the wrong pages and it is not an indication of a larger editing issue.

Okay, I'm kind of interested in what an "unmelting ice shard" is, and its functionality. I suppose it could be placed in an insulated carrier to keep food from spoiling while traveling. Any other functionality beyond that?
I have NO clue if this is the case or not, but my first thought was for characters who aren't magical who want an item that could do cold damage.

Or it would be a great component for crafting magical items.

Doesn't Matter; Had fun!
(plus, I think there's still an OK shot of it against low reflex enemies. 30-40% chance is OK at the level you get it.)

I like the fact that there are minor staves in there like the staff of minor arcana.
But is it plausible that first level clerics are commonly venturing out in the world with a Staff of Blessed Relief?
This simple wooden staff is given to young clergy when they
first set out into the world to spread the charity of their faith.

Grr! Too many years ignoring the "the" when alphabetizing. Thanks.

That last one is actually a drug.
What? You've never heard of crystal breath?

I was hoping the ring of force shield would get its price cut; it seems way overpriced at 8500 go. I think I house-ruled it to 4500 (bonus^2 * 1000 gp + 500).
The ring of forcefangs seems sweet, if maybe kind of cheap - nigh-immunity to all force spells for 8000 gp?
I think I'm going to love those treasure tables.

The animated property is back for shields - see the belligerent shield in the first image. Animated tower shields for casters return... Just what the game needed. Expensive mind you - a +1 +1(bashing) + X (animated) shield for 36000? That suggests that animated is a +4 property. Alternatively, they may have priced that particular shield as much more expensive - as it is effectively a dancing weapon (+4)...

Staff of the Master. That is pretty nice for wizards in a pinch.
And avalanche shield just made me want to play a shield basher :D
Staff of the Master is Gawdawfully cheap for the effect. Break it down
+1/+1 weapon = 4000
Plus
8 (CL) * 3 (Vampiric Touch)*400*1/2 (using 2 charges) * 2
8* 2(spectral Hand)*300*2
8* 1(Ray of Enfeeblement)*200*2
Plus
X - blow charges for metamagic
= 30000
X = 3600 gp...
Thats potentially one hell of a cheap and versatile metamagic booster... a lot of mages have Quicken. Two quicken's an adventure on their highest level spell slots... Never mind someone building staves with more limited powers and a similar effect.

I totally understand. It took me a minute to figure it out.

You know, I was looking at the pictures, and something's been nagging be about them, something familiar, and I think I finally figured out what it was. Almost certainly accidentally, they feel very similar to entries from ancient NES RPG strategy guides, like the one for Dragon Warrior back when Nintendo Power did one. Or maybe it's just the art.
Either way, that just makes me smile.

The layout is not my taste but aside from that the content looks pretty interesting.
Is it self contained (aside from core rulebook items) or will I get a bunch of UM/UC/APG stuff in the tables as well? I don't have any desire to use those books so I don't want to bother with a bunch of content I'll have to ignore and re-roll when it comes up.

Minor typos aside, I love the new content, but not this new format. It's hard on the eyes, and as I've said before, it's way too "blocky" for me -- plus 'construction requirements' looks detached from the rest of the stat block. I honestly wish this does not become the standard format in PF books.
I have to say I'm not liking the layout either.
It's quite a departure from other Paizo produced books and, in my opinion at least, a step in the wrong direction. The layout looks like a bunch of stat cards on a page instead of entries in a book. In fact, the layout looks a little like something you might see in a 4E book, which does not fill me with warm fuzzies ...
Winter_Born |
I agree. Reminds me of those Prima guides or nintendo power guides. I actually probably still have the one for Dragon Warrior Monsters 8.
I like that nostalgia feel.
If its the same person as layed out the excellent Beginner's Box, she came from Nintendo I believe. Sarah E Robinson, unless I'm mistaken. Awesome work.

It collects and updates material from the last 5 years of Paizo products. The Staff of the Master previewed today, for example, is from a 3.5 module (Conquest of Bloodsworn Vale), and I don't believe I have seen it anywhere else.
Regardless, yes, it has items and material from UC, UM, and many other sources.

The layout may not be for everyone but believe me seeing one page on the screen does not give you the full effect of what this layout does. When you have the book in your hand and are flipping through it you will be able to find items a lot quicker and find exactly what each item does without scanning through walls of text.
...and yes I did that layout of Dragon Warrior for Nintendo Power.

Will it give the stats for the UC and UM items in the book or will it say "see UM pg. 41".

Just looking at the preview images, I can't say that I'm a "fan" (I don't DIS-like it) of the new layout, but I can certainly understand WHY it was done and how it helps. As a type of catalogue/reference book, Ultimate Equipment is something that one would want to be able to scan over and identify material quickly. It does not benefit from the aesthetic that other Pathfinder hardcovers do because of that. I don't know how much credibility an individual would lend to -- what's it called... typography? -- but there is something to it, and lots of money is spent on it.
I don't think of this as a "direction" that Paizo is taking so much as I see as them attempting to make the text more efficient.
Functional might be the word.

I have to agree. I really hope this style of layout is a one time thing and not a sign of a new layout direction the books will be going in.

I agree with Foghammer, and would go further to say that this layout works WELL in this specific book. When it's a book filled with items and is known to be a book filled with items, the layout works well to present the items.
HOWEVER, if it was any other type of book, I would agree that this layout would start to throw me off.
In short, well-done on the layout, and I recommend keeping it for Ultimate Equipment 2, but not for other books.

Did anyone else notice that the staff of toxins from APG http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/staves/staff-of-toxins more than doubled in price?
I guess the discussion about staff pricing is over.
Yep, the devs mentioned a while ago that the APG staves had their cost as their price, so they were doubled to make it right.

Can anyone tell me if the layout is the same as the magic item appendix in RotRL? I'm blind and the snapshots of the UE are not OCR compatible with my software like the PDF's. I hope not, because that format was annoying to say the least. I'm not the target audience so it's understandable though. Keep up the good work Paizo, it's appreciated.

Yes. This book uses the same style of item statblocks as the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition.
