Early Pathfinder RPG Product Previews

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Just in case you missed the announcements and updates at Gen Con 2011, here's some news on the next few Pathfinder RPG products.

Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box

Pawns from the Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box.

The Beginner Box contains:

  • A 64-page player book with information on the cleric, fighter, rogue, and wizard classes up to level 5; skills; feats; equipment; and rules for combat, adventuring, and how to handle leveling up.
  • A 96-page GM book with a sample adventure; information on running the game; creating a campaign; 12 pages of magic items; 24 pages of monsters; a sample campaign starting area; and advice on building your own adventures.
  • Other materials such as a Flip-Mat, three pages of cardboard pawns for PCs and monsters (see photo for an example), pregenerated characters, and a blank character sheet.

When the Beginner Box is released, we'll have additional free online content for players (the barbarian class, new spells, new feats, and new rogue talents) and GMs (an adventure, more magic items, and more monsters). The Beginner Box directs players and GMs to look online for this additional content.

Bestiary 3

This 320-page book has 283 pages of monsters, including new monster categories such as clockwork, demodand, div, kami, and kyton (some of which are subtypes). If you're a GM running a high-level game, you'll find 36 monsters at CR 15 or higher (more than 20 of which aren't outsiders).

Advanced Race Guide

This comprehensive guide to rules on fantasy races includes 10 pages on each race in the Core Rulebook (including humans), six pages each on featured races such as aasimar, catfolk, goblins, orcs, and tieflings, two pages each on uncommon races such as duergar, gillmen, kitsune, and suli, and a 38-page chapter on designing your own balanced 0-HD races.

Ultimate Equipment

This is a collection of all the nonmagical and magical gear we've published, updated and all in one place, and that's only half of this book. It'll also include random magic item tables for everything in the book, with items sorted by slot to make it easier to finish up gear for PC and NPCs.

Don't get me wrong I love the reuse of Paizo owned (and very smexy) art.

But...

>Thats a Salt Wight from AP#38 not a zombie
>Thats a Dire Wolf, not a regular Wolf

Hoping thats a draft...

Im hoping your not seriously giving Paizo crap about using their art in a way that they think is appropriate. Sheesh.

Are veggy pygmies and yak folk in the Races book? I think there's room for veggy pygmies! :)

Spoiler:
Greypelt a Male Worg Warrior 2

Inaccurate pedantry, tut tut.

And you missed out that the goblin boss is actually a Sewer Goblin, shocking lapse of standards, call yourself a pedant. In my day we'd have thrown you out of the guild of pedants for that kind of shoddiness!

I imagine that the art selection for this went something like:
"Find the coolest orc, the coolest wolf, the coolest, spider... but they have to be clear, look good in portrait and not be too detailed for a pawn."

The images in monster art are representative, not definitive.

(In the meantime, post to let us know what YOU might want to see in such a book!)

Ok, what I really want to see in the Ultimate Equipment book is a new set of Item Creation rules. Everyone knows the current system doesn't work and is routinely hand-waved away.

An equipment book is the perfect opportunity to fix this hole in the game and it's far enough away that you have the time to devote to fixing it.

What would I want to see in a book on equipment? In addition to the new equipment, that is?

Feats for using the new stuff (and maybe some of the old stuff as well) better. Be it alchemical items, weapons, or mundane stuff like a crowbar.

New and improved rules for making magic items. And preferable a loophole closer that prevents meta-magic feat rods getting made so the player doesn't have to take the feat at all.

Stuff in a races book I want to see?

Favored class options besides the "bonus hit point or skill point" for the new races and classes. I liked the option in the APG and I am always disappointed when new classes such as the Magus don't get similar options when they are released. A races book is the perfect place to add that in.

Race specific feats that mean something at higher levels, for both the new ones and the old ones.

Any chance the catfolk will get a "proper" name in the ARG?

(I wouldn't be opposed to rakasta, myself. ;))

Yeah, we shifted around some art here and there to make for the best images we could find for the Beginner Box. We figured that the intended audience--newbies--wouldn't mind that we called the wolf something different in Hollow's Last Hope. ;)

That is indeed trivial, but in my opinion the original art pieces for giant centipede, skeleton, orc and zombie look better; and not only that, but I'm not sure if these images are ideal choices to represent these monsters (e.g. "in this game zombies wear miner helmets and spades? Okaay..."). I just prefer more generic images. In addition, those monsters look a bit unclear when scaled down to "pawn-size" (I can just barely make out what the skeleton's head is), but this may be just due to the image's low resolution (PPI).

Anyway, that's my humble opinion, nothing more. :)

Oh yea!

+ a lot.

There will be plenty of new nonmagical and magical equipment in the book. It's not "half the stuff you've seen before, half random magic item tables." Because that would suck.

Would it? If it collected every item from the PFS modules, public modules, APs, Companions, Settings books and everything else outside of Core, APG and *ahem* Armory, then I think I'd buy it.

I object when a book reprints discrete items that I could have gone out and gotten (if, for example, the Inner Sea book had just re-published the writeups for nations that had appeared in the APs). But when you're talking about such small bits of material, sprinkled liberally through dozens of books... then there's a lot of value in collecting them together. I'd say the same goes for NPCs. I'd love to see a collection like the one that appears in JR#1, but for all of the AP books, modules and PFS modules.

Yes, for Ultimate Equipment I'd like good mundane crafting rules, and good magic item crafting rules, please.

I'd like UE or another book describing the uses of and listings of minerals, herbs, and plants to be found in Golarion for use in creating items, potions, poisons, medicines, salves etc.

+1 on the herbalism. There just hasn't been a good treatment of herbs and other plant medicinal approaches to a mundane (or semi-mundane) source of healing, condition restoring, or other types of buffs. That would help flesh out the Druid and the Ranger, along with anyone else willing to take Knowledge Nature, or Profession Herbalist to tap into the more organic side of the world.

The "true" game for me is levels 1 through 6 and so I'd hope for a lot of material that helps flesh out that lower magic and mundane world. A lot has already been done, but it would be great to have more cheap low-magic items to use. Likewise, herbalism would help fill a need for healing that is ordinarily part of the magic realm.

It would be great to have more things to do with masterwork items. It's a very undeveloped part of the rules, and being able to shift the bonus around a bit, or add other minor bonuses or features for more gold would be a nice set of features to have.

The 3.5 Magic Item Compendium did a great job of offering up gobs of sub-1000gp items that provided interesting effects even for low level play. I know that stuff isn't OGL, but stuff like it would be awesome.

I also have to say that in those fading days of 3.5, the tables at the end of the MIC were some of the most utilized pages during that whole period, particularly the tables that broke down the items from levels 1 through 20. That kind of framework assistance was absolutely wonderful to have and made the MIC one of my favorite books from the entire line.

I think what would be the most helpful overall would be a far more in depth treatment of low/normal/high magic campaigns. Beyond suggested wealth by level tables that we currently have I'd want to see a more detailed framework of these broad categories and the kind of effect it has on CR.

Can you please call it the Pathfinder Treasury instead?

"Ultimate" titles never sat well with me because of the Marvel comics thing. "Treasury" is concise, descriptive, and antiquarian.

"Treasury" would look right next to "Bestiary". And, since this is not a book of character options, the "Ultimate" prefix is actually sort of misleading.

Actually, Erik Mona has indicated why he wants to call it Ultimate. He said that this will be ‘the’ book on equipment and doesn’t want there to be an Equipment book 2, 3, 4, etc. And the same reason on the books for combat and magic.

And there is no better way to say that this book will be the only one than to call it ‘Ultimate’.

Bah, we live in a world of prequels. In 2013 they can issue Penultimate Magic, then in 2014 Antepenultimate Magic, then in 2015 Preantepenulatimate Magic, then in 2016 Forepreantepenultimate Magic.

They could, yes. But from what Erik was saying, they have no plans to put out more dedicated ‘Magic’, ‘Combat’ or ‘Equipment’ books. He only wants one book for each.

I also have an Equipment DB that has yet to be published if anyone is interested.

Ah, well. I still prefer Treasury, but to the publisher go the spoils. I do think it will be the odd-duck of the Ultimate line, being equipment rather than character options.

Render unto Mona that which is Mona's.

Heheheh oh lordy.

Do we really need funky names for everything, especially something as straightforward as catfolk?

Please. Stick with catfolk. Let the linguists out there change it to something different for their campaign, but don't saddle us with ailuroi or kooshka or felinis or whatever.

Like 3% of the people will know what they are (and I'm assuming half of the names suggested are in jokes or references to anime or something), and the other 97% will probably just go "huh?"

IMO it would be really weird for them to call themselves "catfolk" (humans, as a general rule, aren't referred to as "menfolk" outside of Alabama).

'Catfolk' is likely the name for their race in the Common tongue. I've always assumed that Common = players' native language.

I hope catfolk look like the new thundercats but all of them have tails instead of the Tabaxi or lycanthropic cats.

I hope the ultimate equipment will have some gadgeteer archetypes (or perhaps prestige class, so everyone can take it).

Even tough I love Ultimate combat and every book so far, ultimate equipment sounds pretty lame. In every book was more than enough equipment and I don't really need 30 weapons with names out of africa, 20 from old england another 15 from russia.
I'm not mad about the asian weapons, but in my opinion it wasn't necessary.

I just hope that the quality of the book is closer to the books so far, than to what I imagine when I read the title. My first tought was "mh, so if this is their next book, this edition will soon run out (of ideas)". But I'm happy to be proved wrong when the next product titles will be announced.

There is nothing lame about new magic items, special materials, alchemical items and uses for special or mundane items.

no, it itself it's not lame, I would love to create a rogue that can spend all his money on mundane items.

But a whole book only about equipment doesn't sound very interesting. As there is no official article about the book, it may be that the book offers much more, but if it really only a bunch of weapons, armor and magic items, I believe it will be the first hardcover book that I won't buy.

Which isn't even English, so while catfolk may call themselves 'Mrrowerarr" in their racial language and people speaking Taldan call them "catfolk," I doubt the Taldan word for "catfolk" is "catfolk" any more than the Spanish word for "cat" is "cat."

Actually, as a consequence of a really bizarre interaction of the Higgs boson, the current common language of all Material Plane semi-European cultures is, in fact, modern English. Earth, Golarion, Toril, Krynn, Oerth, Aebrynis, Scarn, it's all the same language.

By chance will ultimate equipment finally have a maul in it?

gbonehead wrote:

Mine was pretty straightforward—adapted from a Greek word that means "cat." And "felini" is along the same lines, only Latin.

Mind you, I don't have anything against just calling them catfolk. They've probably long since decided that it's less offensive than the way humans usually can't put enough of a purr into the name they call themselves. (Which totally changes the meaning of the word—and to something nonsensical and silly, no less—you know...)

I simply don't see how it'd be any different from calling hyena-people gnolls, or calling frog-people gripplis or boggards (as others have pointed out).

That's pretty much what an earthbreaker is, isn't it? (some of the art notwithstanding, needs a longer handle)

Admittedly the name could make it easy to overlook, if it's a match.

Sovereign Court

For Ultimate Equipment could they

A) Revisit and balance some of the preexisting weapons and armour? Like the sword cane or the hide shirt?

b) Expand some of the general weapons like the club or the dirk by giving historical names and stats?

c) Give us not only adventuring gear but also mundane furniture and trappings of wealth and power? Nothing worse then taking over a villains lair and not knowing how much it's going to cost to redecorate the place.

d) Perhaps give us different saddle options for beasts of burden? I'm sure a group of gnomes isn't going to be mounted on an Elephant the same way a group of humans would be.

e) What about more magical and mundane items for mounts and animal companions?

f) Could we have some building prices, how much does it cost to retire and buy an inn? How much to build and operate a castle?

g) and lastly we've had some kingdom building stuff in the adventure paths, and some mass combat rules, could we get these rules compiled some where?
