Thats all fine GM, its more what she would do given the 1936 and how things are done. She was not trying to kill them just stop the killing.
She failed a little as they shot the proff, So next round she will try and help him;

Khaled Aziz |

Hahaha, two damage rolls, two 1's. Got to love the digital dice!
Did anyone notice those same dice give me 2 & 2 on back to back trip & attack rolls?
I swore I wouldn't whine about it, but... but... :)

Veiled Antiquarian |

Helena, to be clear I loved the action. I just wanted to make sure there was a clear expectation of how in combat social skills would be handled.
And the "give up your surrounded" and then immediately shooting him before he could respond may have had opposing influences on his decision making process.

As he falls, Khaled swings his heavy curved dagger, but he misjudged the doorway and the blade embeds in the frame.
Does this mean the weapon is stuck and not freely usable (ie: expend some action to recover it)? Descriptive or mechanical?

Khaled Aziz |

So, does the AoO benefit from the prone AC/CMD penalty? Does it happen because he's trying to stand up or because he has stood up?
I think the former, but up to you.
My logic being most AoO happen before the action is complete (as the offending action may be interrupted). Exiting a threatened square, casting a spell, etc... So, he'd technically still be prone.
I actually want to disarm him.

For all you United States denizens or ex-pats:
Remembering what the country went through in 1776...
Happy Independence Day, Folks!
Trivia: Declaration of Independence was actually signed on July 2nd, but it was a Saturday. Was made official on Monday, the 4th.

As someone form the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the only county on earth with "Great" in its name.
Back in 1776 "THE" Empire as we like to call it, was not as big as it would become, one on which the sun never set and the Biggest one in the whole of human history. {Beat that Genghis Khan!!}
I have to say, it irks us still that our overseas lands of
Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Virginia. Did rise up in rebellion against the most beloved George III {Ok I will hand it too you that he was off his rocker at the time}
But we shall let bygones be bygone, and after many years we have excepted your.... Independence. And have come to view you as our younger sibling.
But of late it has wormed hour Royalist hearts to see the United states as you like to call them, embracing monarchy once more, if only tentatively, its early days yet, but we hold high hopes that a court will be formed soon, with Nobles and Royalty leading them, or has that happened ?
So hard to keep up now days...
This is a joke post by the way

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Don't go forgetting the (Northern) Irish, lad.
I still say that if Mad George and the Parliament had just given us representation like we asked, this whole mess could have been avoided, and there'd be MPs from Virginia, New York, etc sitting in Parliament today. Maybe throw some prominent colonials some noble titles while they're at it. Duke Benjamin of Philadelphia has a nice ring to it. Earl George of Virginia. That sort of thing.

Welllll.... there in is a story, the British empire was based more on trade than anything. Yes we had a modern army pushing The Empire into new lands, but behind that was mercantilism, some time we did not even have to fight, just showed up and paid off the local powers. But then you have to Encourage trade, no point being the heart of the Industrial revolution if no one can get your goods or have the cash to pay for them. Sooo, you have to develop local Governance and with that local markets. Bring in trade law, build infrastructure. By the time you do all that the local band of tribes who you where dealing with now look very much like their own Nation state. The kids of the local leaders have now all be to Oxford and know full well that back home can rule itself. The very things that made the British empire where its inevitable downfall.
So we could have given the developing states of America representation, but just like Canada, Australia and others. The USA was always going to become its own country, of maybe countries, with possibly the King Queen of England as a figurehead of state.
But we shall never know, What the USA did with its form of Independence with brake the mould of Kings or Gods being the figurehead of state. The USA place "The People" of the state front and center. No one had ever done that before. The founding fathers knew that you had to brake with the past if you had any home of making a better future. State/LAW/Faith Separated and clear lines. Now we can talk about the endless push and pull between the three branches today, but they have always done so and thats healthy.
This multi-political strength is in this push and pull and the ability to adapt quickly to events. Where as nono-political systems like one party states/Juntas become frigid over time, inflexible and so weak and fall, where as democratic states tend to last a lot lot longer.
The British empire had a parliament, Lords and a king, A king with now power, yet acts as oversight by means of the lords. Its near impossible for a despot to come into power in the UK, as military have allegiance to the king 1st. But its parliament that has the power pay for and go to war.
I often find it frustrating in a Fantasy setting that, that authors go with King/Lords/Knights Medieval fusalsiem all the time. I ran a game once where the Dragons where trying to introduce Democracy to the world setting. HAhah.

Glad your having a blast GM, I know i am, its great fun.
I found at long last an image of Helena I like and look like how I see her.

Khaled Aziz |

I just wanted to throw out there that I am having a blast with all of you in this game so far. Thank you for all you are contributing!
Glad you're enjoying! I am too!

Evangeline Haldane, "Eva" |

I am definitely having fun as well. Glad to hear our GM is enjoying it, that is always a good sign for game longevity.
Billy, the Nat 1 on the intimidate check was priceless - it came out so strangely, Eva is just downright confused and befuddled!

Billie Shen |

Yeah, well Billie is all of 5' tall and about 100 lbs, both the smallest and youngest person in the party. I doubt she's ever going to frighten anyone. It's kind of one of those times when a hosed roll actually works out. I imagine she just sounded petulant, which is about right.
The way Billie sees it it, Eva was threatening to pin a murder on her. If you recall the post where she took the second shot at the man from the stairs, it was barely aimed. She snapped off a shot, which she intended more to keep him too distracted to shoot at her again, immediately dropped flat, and started crawling up the stairs. Billie didn't expect the shot to hit when she made it and never looked to see what happened.
She also never took a close look at him afterward. She passed by him twice. Once she was on the way to the back while distracted by the smoke coming from there. The second time Helena was digging through his pockets as she passed, and she was studiously ignoring the pilfering going on. Billie just assumed Eva clocked the guy with her cane again and nothing has happened since to suggest otherwise to her.
If Billie has been in a foul mood during this whole thing, consider that her letter set her up to expect bad news at the house, and she found bad news at the house. She keeps asking people what's going on, and the only person who has ever bothered to reply to her is Eva, who says mumbo jumbo stuff Billie can't make heads or tails of. She has zero reasons to like or trust anyone she's come across so far.
Billie has a regular normal life. So, she applies regular normal logic to what's happening. This whole thing looks like a couple of gangs of criminals with a rivalry of grudges killing each other off. Very little has been said or done to suggest to her she's wrong.

I keep getting ‘Bones’ from Star Trek feelings with billie haha “Dam it Jim I’m a doctor not an occult investigator” hehe
Helena in my mind is more like Harry Lyme from the ipcriss files or Gourge Smiley from Tinker tailor soldier spy. so Helena, is the 180 of Billie, she has lived her whole life with secrets and constant worry of danger. Of being found out, used or abused,so she has spent a lot of her 100 years + dealing with the underworld and undesirable types. She has been in more than one gun fight, been ambushed and attacked. She has needed to become a hard, and at times a killer , like now. She is someone who dose what’s needed. And Her normal life is just a cover , she has never had a normal like.

Billie Shen |

I keep getting ‘Bones’ from Star Trek feelings with billie haha “Dam it Jim I’m a doctor not an occult investigator” hehe
Yes! Exactly! Not that I was using dear old Dr. Leonard McCoy as the precise model, but the point is valid. Now Billie does have other facets to her like party girl, political partisan, and petrolhead, but opportunities to put those things on display haven't come along yet.
I really should see The Ipcriss File and related. I've heard good things and dude, Michael Caine.

have we stalled?

Veiled Antiquarian |

Good morning, and my sincere apologies for my absence. The last 10 days have been one sucker Punch after another. I share this not looking for forgiveness - I should have at least given a heads up that some issues were going on - but at least am asking for understanding.
The previous Thursday and Friday my entire family came down with either strep or covid, with my 4-year-old son getting both. He ended up in the hospital for several days because of a pre-existing condition that triggered seizures with the covid/strep combo.
As everyone was starting to recover, our refrigerator's compressor failed.
And on Wednesday, our senior but still lively malamute (dog) had a drastic health crash, which led to us having to put her down on Thursday night. She was with us for 10 years and we also lost my father (grandpa to my boys) 4 months ago, so the loss hit the whole household very hard.
Before my absence I had just mentioned how much i was enjoying the game. I hope the sentiment still exists among the party. I will try to get it moving again today, but will be honest that I do not know what my posting rate will look like the next few days as we continue to mourn.

Helena Conradina Von Der Ahe |

Holly Molly thats hard, no worries at all GM take as much time as you like. I think we players can wait for RL to get to normail for you.

John Mosby |

Sorry to hear all that. My two boys' epilepsy is well controlled thankfully. However when they get really sick, those seizures can come back with a vengeance. I've spent more than a few nights in the hospital with one or the other of them. I'm glad things are going better.

Khaled Aziz |

One day at a time... thankful folks are on the mend.
Hopefully, this is an enjoyable escape for you... there is a social contract but, hopefully not too much pressure!
I'm here when you're ready, at whatever pace!
