"Midshipman Solo you and Petty Officer de Orilla search this room for anymore intelligence data. Captain Chorizal has a perimeter been established," J'Shun commands over the team's tactical comm channel.

"Yup," Chorizal replies, waiting until the rest of the group get into the room before backing into the door.

With this much open space before him, he stows his borrowed cryopike and readies his borrowed machine gun.


Rattus swims to the nearest crate and starts going through it. It looks like it contains mining equipment; of particular note are two driver seismic picks and a medium excavation laser. As J'Shun takes command, Chorizal sets up an overwatch position.

Meanwhile, Loki examines a datapad and finds it was used as a lab notebook and contains hand-entered data from a series of experiments. Alas, he finds the computers too well-protected to hack.

Just as the xenoarchaeologist starts across the lab for to examine the first aid cabinet, back in the main area the mining robots suddenly activate with loud whirring and clicking of gears. Their drills start spinning and their magma blades heat up as they advance toward the Starfinders!

@Loki: You can attempt a Physical Science check to understand what the experiments recorded in the datapad are about. Your attempt to hack the other computers failed, but you can retry after the combat.

You all knew this was coming :) (I thought the scenario having it happen after a few rounds was interesting, because it spreads everyone out). We'll move to Initiative.

He then swims back to the main room, just barely reaching the door.

Are our starting positions on the map accurate or do we need to move out tokens to reflect where we said we were going. Since J'Shun was following Loki he would have been farther into the room they were exploring.


As Loki starts swimming back to the main room, the mining robots become fully active! On their heavy treads, each rolls forward and then unleashes a blast of deafening sonic energy!

The robots' drills and sonic ranged weapons have been modified to work underwater, but not their magma blades--please ignore the reference to them in the text in a previous post.

The two robots shoot sonic cone weapons, but only Rattus is in the area of their initial blasts. Result: Both miss!

@J'Shun: Please feel free to go ahead and move your token to where you think you would have started.

Loki:
You can discern from the datapad that the lab tests were to characterize the cloaking properties of the particular type of basalt that was being mined. There’s also a reference to the “Eternal Source” next to a strange doodle on the pages of data--a tangle of lines with a few extending out of it like an octopus’s tentacles and several eyes in the middle. The doodle is oddly disconcerting. Please attempt a DC 18 Will save. You can also attempt a Culture check to recognise "the Eternal Source".

Despite inexplicably queasy feelings from viewing the image, you're able to maintain your composure. You remember hearing something about the "Eternal Source" as related to a group of morlamaws who began looking into morlamaw history after the recent contact by the SFS and other off-planet organizations.

Chorizal, Rattus, and Kosigan are up.

Chorizal levels his borrowed underwater adapted machine gun at the closer of the two machines (the one in Blue) before opening up on it.

The Underwater modification should eliminate all the negative modifiers.

Kosigan takes careful aim and manages to spray one of the mining robots with acid, but the water disperses so much of the stream that the target is barely affected! Meanwhile, Chorizal can't get the hang of his borrowed machine gun and sprays bullets erratically in every direction! Rattus' pistol just can't penetrate his targets heavily armored exterior.

Kosigan's attack hits Blue (even when I factor in range increment penalty and the underwater combat penalty) but half damage for attacking underwater and then a little acid resistance means only 1 point of damage gets through.

Chorizal's nat 1 misses, of course.

Rattus' attack missed.

With a good line of sight from the doorway, Loki fires a blast of super-heated steam at the Blue Robot.

Loki's pinpoint laser blast punches through the mining robot's hardened exterior!

Loki's attack hits. The mining robots obviously have some fire resistance, but you still did good damage to it.


The yellow mining robot's heavy tank-threads begin to turn as it crawls slowly towards Rattus, its rock-boring drill extending forward ominously! Meanwhile, the other one activates some sort of self-repair mechanism.

The scenario doesn't address the robots' movement underwater and doesn't give them a Swim speed or ranks in Athletics, so I'm going to rule they can move at half land speed.

J'Shun uses entropy again so he can charge straight at the mining robot looming over Rattus. Double move, also I used an entropy point to boost J'Shun's swim speed by 10'.

With J'Shun and Rattus dealing with one of the robots...and ruining his shots, he shifts his aim to the other robot.

With his weapon's special modification ensuring the spray of rounds is unaffected by the intervening gallons of water, Chorizal fills the blue robot full of holes!

As Kosigan torpedoes into the fray, the khizar and the mining robot exchange powerful blows! The swirling water and frantic movement throw off Rattus' aim, however.

@Kosigan: I've moved your token adjacent to Yellow since you're doing a melee attack. Because the mining robot has reach, your movement provokes an AoO from it. Result: Kosigan, you get hit and take 23 P.

Kosigan's attack hits Yellow. After halving the damage for underwater combat but increasing the resulting electricity damage by 50% (the robot is vulnerable to electricity), it takes: 5 B and 9 E.

Rattus' ranged attack misses Yellow, but does not provoke an AoO because it already took one against Kosigan.

Loki's modified laser pistol burns through some of the yellow mining robot's ablative armor! But the robot's self-repair systems manage to fix most of the damage.

Meanwhile, the blue robot trundles forward, it's spinning drill extended towards the Starfinders huddled in the doorway!

Loki's attack hits Yellow--there's obviously some resistance to fire, but most of the damage goes through.

Yellow does a full-round action to heal 19 points of damage.

Blue does a double-move.

"Oh no, you have gotten close. Whatever shall I do?" Chorizal taunts the robot. He releases the machine gun, letting it tumble down to the floor and whips out his borrowed cryopike.

Storm hammers and pistol slugs bounce harmlessly off the yellow-painted mining robot's thick armor! Rattus gets too close while shooting and gets literally drilled, but J'Shun is now close enough to engage!

Rattus provokes an AoO for using a ranged weapon while in melee (the robot has reach). Result: Hit. Rattus, you take 23 P.

Botting J'Shun as doing a guarded step and a melee attack. Result: Hit for half damage (and there's a little acid resistance).

Loki's pinpoint laser blast damage the blue robot further!

But the implacable machines continue to follow their programming! The yellow hued mining robot turns its drill towards J'Shun, while the blue one tries to bore a hole in Chorizal!

Loki's attack hits and does normal damage (though some fire resistance applies) to Blue. A couple more hits like that would probably take down Blue.

Yellow does a full attack vs J'Shun. Result: Both miss.

Blue does a guarded step and an attack against Chorizal. Result: Miss.

"No, no guys...you take care of that one...I'll handle this one," Chorizal says as several of his companions rush the other robot.

But he stands his ground and makes a double jab at the 'bot in front of him.

J'Shun's entropically-charged longsword wreaks havoc with the yellow mining robot's systems!

J'Shun's first attack his Yellow for half damage. The second attack is a crit, which starts with half damage but then does 50% more because the robots have a vulnerability to critical hits. However, the robot is immune to bleed and to effects that require a Fortitude save like the staggered rider (unless specifically stated to work on objects or is harmless). All in all, Yellow's not quite as bad as Blue, but both robots are definitely hurting.
