Laeron cleans his blade before stowing his weapon. Seeing Black Molly’s injury he says, “I can try to patch up that hurt. I’ve had a lot a practice, I can do a pretty decent job of it.”

If we are taking 10 minutes, Laeron will offer to Treat Wounds for Black Molly. Laeron is an Expert in Medicine and with Assurance (Medicine) can hit DC 20 without a roll. The healing result of 2d8+10 will automatically get Black Molly to max hit points, unless I am missing something.

Taking a few extra minutes to patch each other up doesn’t delay you long, and you quickly follow the path downhill. The way to the meeting site on the River Porthmos weaves through ramshackle homes and rundown businesses. The buildings’ long shadows hide intermittent potholes in the cobblestone streets. After a ten-minute trek, a short flight of stairs leads to a muddy, abandoned dockside neighborhood with several rickety piers. Gentle waves ripple across a pair of bodies lying near the shore.

One of the men’s faces is contorted in terror, and he is clutching his chest. The other man is covered in hundreds of puncture marks and bruises, his clothes thoroughly shredded.

DC 16 Medicine:
You are certain that the first man died purely of fright,while the other man was simultaneously beaten and bitten to death.

DC 23 Occultism check to Identify Magic:
You recognize the traces of a spell and realize that the first man was killed by a phantasmal killer spell.

As some of you are examining the bodies, I would take a Perception check to Seek from anyone interested in doing so. Otherwise let me know what you’re doing.

Klara:
There’s something odd about the rocks in the foundations of the buildings. Pointing this out to a teammate (using Clue In) will help guide their eyes to notice it too, and might help them react to danger more quickly.

Meaning please do the Perception check, and please use Clue In on someone. Succeeding at these Perception checks can give a bonus to Initiative in the next fight.

Your Pursue a Lead bonus does apply to both the Medicine and Perception checks.

Have we left the prison after search and becoming sure that no Pathfinders are hostages in there if so, Klara is ready to depart, as this Peddler seems worth confronting.

Arriving to the meeting site she nods suggesting Laeron to check rocks in the building foundation Clue In while she uses brain powers to think further.

Black Molly can retcon the Occultism check related to the magic used to kill the man using fear, but I’m going to move us along into the combat.

Sunshine, Black Molly and Klara all notice something very strange about the rocks in the buildings. They’re moving on their own and rolling uphill! Those three are then ready to act when the small pebbles and gravel begin to gestalt themselves into larger and larger and even larger masses. Which of course, then threaten the Pathfinders (cause when wouldn’t some crazy rock-swarm-creature not be inclined to hurt Pathfinders?)

To clarify, Sunshine, Black Molly and Klara all happened to beat the DC of the Perception check, gaining a +1 untyped bonus to initiative, and then it just so happened that those were the three that acted before the critters. Just coincidence, no other mechanical benefit.

Sunshine misses and Klara hits. She realizes as the stone sinks into the blobby mass that she's unable to target any specific body part in spite of it having a vaguely humanoid form. Though her stone does seem to have done some extra damage otherwise.

Black Molly knows a thing or two about creepy death-spirit magic, but neither her nor the Cap’n’s attacks are accurate enough to hit the broad side of a spiritual elephant.

Sunshine’s opponent is the quickest to act and swings its large gravely fists at the ranger.

Well after Shayna let's loose with her noise blast, Laeron steps forth to challenge the biggest and baddest rock monster to a bit of sword play. "Let's see what you're made of!" Laeron exclaims as he uses one hand to swing his sword, while using his free hand to try to pluck out one of the rocks to see what's going on!

Klara can tell that the smaller (Blue and Green) ones are not technically swarms in spite of being composed of thousands of cobblemites, but are instead aberrations. They do likely share one feature of swarms though, an immunity to mental effects that would target only one creature (Swarm Mind). The big one is a slightly different critter, so perhaps a further study of it might be warranted.

Corelion strikes one of the creatures doing far less damage than he would have expected. The stones seem to part of their own accord as his sharp blade slashes right through it with diminished effect.

Both creatures are affected, though less than Shayna would have hoped for.

Laeron challenges the largest of the creatures, though it doesn’t really seem to understand. Or care. A brief stutter in the flow of time takes what at first appears to be a miss and turns it into a crit!

Hero point used, but damage reduced for Resistance to Slashing.

Laeron spots the one to the north discorporate and begin burrowing through the earth beneath the building, disappearing from sight in the mud. Though he doesn’t have long to think about what he’s seeing before the biggest of the three tries to slam him into the dirt, too.

Klara knows that while cobble mites can be kept as pets or familiars, a swarm of them living in a city is rare, and a swarm taking on a humanoid form is unnatural. Decidedly unnatural.

Klara also hits, taking a chunk out of the big one.

The one next to Sunshine isn’t smart, but it knows that the bigger one wouldn’t like it if it tried to steal its meal(s). So it focuses on the snack to its south (Sunshine).

Corelion zaps both, neither of whom are quick enough to get out of the way. His halberd then hits Blue. It seems to be losing cohesion and likely couldn’t survive another hit.

Big Laeron swings for the fences and misses.

Black Molly shies away from the one that snuck into the back lines and boosts the Cap’n who sadly misses again.

Klara flings a stone at the biggest of the creatures…. As Molly said, we need a roll please. I’ll move us along, since even a Crit won’t kill it. As you are all about to see…. MWAHAHA!

Sunshine’s chain slices straight through the amalgam of stones like a knife through butter. The creature looks with confusion at what it thought was a snack just before it dissolves into a pile of individual cobble mites. Sunshine swings again at the swarm, and although it hits, it still seems to do less damage than he’d hoped it would.

Still the hunger drives it on, so the swarm flows around the side of the building and tries to grab Sunshine’s legs with a thousand tiny mouths!

Grasping Bites vs Fort DC: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
The kayal easily evades the many tiny grasping teeth, though the gravelly bits do get underfoot and make it hard to move.

This is now a new creature, with a separate stat block, so you can do a new Recall Knowledge check about the swarm. However, I’ll give you that it resisted some of Sunshine’s slashing damage. Also, I feel obligated to inform Sunshine that the swarm’s squares are difficult terrain.

Laeron feels the pressure and in a desperate and heroic move chops straight through it, causing it to dissolve into a smaller pile of gravel!

Which Corelion then smashes and zaps back into inanimate pebbles!

Laeron’s Hero Point strike got a Crit! That (and that alone) put Red to 0 hp. It did become a swarm, but Corelion’s first strike did exactly enough to kill the swarm even accounting for Resistance. Corelion has an extra action.

When Molly is struck, Silverbeard staggers in the same way. He turns toward the bruiser with a shout, and swings his hook, sending an arc of shadowy energy toward it.

The Swarms are a different creature, with a separate stat block, so you can do a new Recall Knowledge check about the swarm (@Klara: I’ll allow it even though there’s none there now, as they were just there and observable when Klara could have acted.) However, I’ll give you that it resisted some of Sunshine’s slashing damage and Sunshine knows that the swarm’s squares are difficult terrain.
