"Yeah, there's got to be more about that," Tim agrees. "I'll be in touch. Meanwhile, if you know of any magical beings that were around the last time Ahk'nathal tried to take over, it might not hurt to ask them about it."
Using the chalk, Tim scrawls a doorway on the brick of one of the buildings near the speakeasy. Once it's complete, Max notices what is inside the chalk outline becomes flat and one-dimensional. He flicks the image with a finger and ripples go outward as if the brick is an image projected on a liquid. "Good luck," he says as he give Max an 'on your way' gesture.
=====================
Halcyon Convention Center
After swiftly making preparations and going downtown, the young heroes stand on the roof of the sprawling convention center. Taking up half a city block, the modern steel-and-glass structure rises several stories in the Tower District. Far from reaching the dizzying heights of many of the glittering skyscrapers that give the district its name, the convention center still looks impressive in its massive windows and open-air floorplan so convention-goers from around the world get to see the best of Halcyon City from within the center.
Some of the most notable landmarks of Halcyon City are within view from the vantage point of the center. Directly across the Boulevard of Heroes rises the Taylor Tower -- also known as Praetor Tower, and down the street Lovelace International can be seen looming overhead. Opposite them, like a glittering needle piercing the blue-white sky, is Kirby Tower marking the center of Halcyon City!
The spring day has burned off most of winter's chill that seeps into the concrete and steel of the city and lingers well after the seasons turn. The noise and bustle of downtown Halcyon create a sense of urgency in the young heroes, knowing that this life and energy could be flash-frozen in an instant if the alien doomsday weapon goes off.
The convention center's interior is swarming with people attending the various meetings and celebrations run by the organizations using the venue. Not only is the Halcyon Bar Association underway, but the Regional Medical Device Sales Collective, the Greater Halcyon Film Festival, and the Halcyon Boat and RV Show are all within the convention center.
And somewhere amidst that chaos, is the alien arms dealer V'orpl and the cryo-phase detonator.
What do you do??

Chloe/Chroknight |

Chloe was familiar with the layout of the Quesada Convention Center, seeing that Mortal Peril ran a booth here during the gaming convention. With such a split between the different events happening at the same time, Chroknight would have a lot of ground to cover.
They fidget with Sam's 'Thinking Cap' on over their helmet, hoping that it will give a little bit of protection tonight. "Okay, I'm going to go and scout out the medical venue first. Probably a good idea to split up and check out the different conventions to hedge our bets. Text me if you find something, I'll do the same."
Chroknight concentrates, and the world slows down around them before anyone can properly respond. They all see a blur racing down the rooftop stairs to start searching for V'orpl.
And by Chroknight's perspective, they were taking quick walking pace down through the center. The biggest problem would be avoiding bumping into civilians given how many people were here and packed together.
While she had been sighted around the HBA, something makes Chroknight want to check out the Medical Device Sales Collective first. What better way to hide strange alien weapons than passing them off as cutting edge medical technology?

Andromeda. |

Andromeda resists the urge to tinker with her Thinking Cap. It's thin and lightweight enough that she'd been able to secure it beneath her sheath, but it was only a matter of time before fluctuations got to it in there too.
Poking it wouldn't help.
"The Halcyon Boat and RV Show might have sufficient space to hide the device. I'll look."

Empyrean a.k.a. "Joy Jones" |

She's been away for so long—probably trapped in various tugs-of-war between government agents and school interests—that Empyrean's arrival is a surprise, but she descends to the convention center on her wings with nary a ruffle. She lands next to Devil Diva, and apparently has traded her scruffy sweat-pants and sport T for a sleek, form-fitting athletic outfit.
"Going inside will limit my mobility. Who should I team up with?" asks Empyrean, as if she's been here the whole time.

Samantha Murphy: Statian |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

A bulky reflective metal would be best, but given her teammates various peculiarities, Sam compromised with a thin headband that weaved hair fine tendrils through the wearer's own hair to produce a web of interference without being restrictive, or disrupt ascetics. "It should go inside your helmet" Sam informed Chronknight but not fast enough, since they were now gone.
Sam nods to the angel, tapping on her tablet to adjust probabilities based on new power sets. "I'll remain here." the nerd girl says simply, sitting down in one of the few open benches, next to an elderly couple smiling up at the strange people with amused if not fogged warmth.
"I will commandeer the surveillance and coordinate. Please keep your communication devices on and in working order." Sam doesn't look to see if anyone disagrees, just starts typing. Okay she does look up, quickly scanning each of their faces, just in case, then lowers her head again to her work.

Devil Diva |

DD gives Empyrean's new outfit an appreciative glance. "Stick with me, Empyrean. Let's check out the Film Festival."

Having been absent from the recent team meeting to discuss the latest game of, find the doomsday device before doom happens. Mostly due to having to make up for his failure in class, as well as some taking a bit of time away from interacting with the team to get his head back on straight. Indarius lands atop the roof after the others with another figure in tow. Shrinking quickly down to his humanoid form after dropping them off.
"Alright don't have the specifics, but I brought an expert that can probably help us find this Nuvoan thing."
He motions to the member of The Corps that he brought along, "Not sure if any of my magic will be particularly good at sniffing the device or the person out, since I don't know much about either, but I'll do my best to support you all."

DM Stalwart |

Alan Nostein, aka Xeno, arrives with Indarius. Clearly of the same species as V'orpl, though his regular human clothes of denim jeans and a flannel shirt makes him appear far less alien.
"I can assist with support, and possibly containment of the device," Xeno says. "However, if you want even a chance of taking V'orpl unawares, I can't scan for Nuvoan tech. That'll tip her off."
The founding member of the Corps sits down next to Statian and opens a laptop modified with wet-looking strands attached to it.
Meanwhile, Devil Diva and Empyrean make their way to the film festival while Andromeda heads to the boat and RV show.
Andromeda finds the show taking up the largest convention room, a cavernous exhibit space that is filled with boats as small as single-person fishing boats and large as eighteen-foot yachts. Future buyers, sports enthusiasts, and those just dreaming wander from booth to booth, collecting brochures and watching demonstration videos of the various products on display.
A different section of the Quesada Convention Center features the film festival. As Max and Joy approach the ticket table, they draw open stares. "We're not really a cosplay event, but you look great!" says one of the young ladies holding a long roll of tickets.
A scrawny fellow with long stringy hair stares at the pair over his round tinted glasses. "I... I don't think that's cosplay. Hi! Hello, ladies! Taking an interest in independent films? Welcome! You're just in time for Pedos: the Feet of Destiny. There's a Q&A afterward with the director."

Empyrean a.k.a. "Joy Jones" |

Empyrean says, "I... think we are somewhat occupied with a current task?" to the filmmaker of the sequel to Manos: the Hands of Fate. She looks to Devil Diva for guidance as she fluffs out her wings a bit (which makes it clear that they are not just a costume piece).

Samantha Murphy: Statian |

Sam gets distracted from her feeds for a moment, taking in her bench mate's tech. "Are they conductive pseudo synaptic membranes?" she asks about the wet-looking strands. She absently taps her screen to send the convention center's blueprints to her teams phones, heads up displays, etc.

![]() |

"Where do you want me Statian? Probably not the best idea for me to go downstairs right now as It'll be the least subtle thing I'm sure."
He nodded to Xeno, "Also I owe you one for the help."

Samantha Murphy: Statian |

Sam looks up from her sudden geek gush and blinks. One of her surprised blinks.
No one asks her questions like this.
After a semi nanosecond pause, she turns back to her screen "There are too many exits to cover, otherwise overwatch on the roof would be ideal. Are there magical means of detection you believe would be able to separate human from not that could be placed remotely in central traffic zones?" his magic is still an unknown wildcard in her calculations. She has terabytes of collected data and expanded theories of use but it all comes down to Everything is possible.
"Otherwise, your logistical abilities would statistically improve our inevitable confrontation, assembling the team once the target has been identified, making the central hub of communication being your most advantageous location."
Sam speak for teleporation is amazing and when we find her, here is where all the team is being tracked, so getting everyone back together quickly would be great. :)

Max smiles indulgently at the bespectacled man. "Thank you, but we're actually looking for somebody. About yay tall, big eyes, white hair, nonhuman. Have you seen somebody like that?"

Guillaume Roy-Côté, Aquarelle |

Ne'veah: What do you think of this place? Or U can surprise me
Ne'veah: But let me know style. I need to pick the right outfit
Gui: It does look fancy
Gui: I'm up for it
Gui: kind of new to Halcyon
Gui: Do not know many fancy places
Gui: But I like this one
Gui: What should I wear?
---
At the convention center, Gui follows Angelica as some times she isn't particularly good with words.

Andromeda. |

The air around Andromeda is staticky with the minute fluctuations of her sheath as she recommits herself to success. We'll find it and we'll stop her. Maybe Gui's mental projections will be enough, and we won't even need backup. We just have to find where she's hiding.
"Some telepaths are also capable of projecting images or disinterest to potential viewers," Though most have to actively select who they wish to deceive She pulls a smile. "She might be hiding the device in plain sight. Your expertise will be vital."
As Andromeda talks she blink clicks through menus in her sight, scanning from boat to boat for anything that seems to be off-spec.

Chroknight works their way through the medical device convention. It quickly becomes obvious that most of the devices were small, internal implants like stents, replacement joints, and prosthetics. Further into the convention floor, they find more elaborate and cutting-edge medical equipment like full-body scanners, 3-D printing, and cryogenics.

At the film festival, the pair at the ticket table shake their heads at the description of the alien. The young man shrugs in apology. "No, sorry. No one like that came through here."
The young woman starts looking nervous. "Is everything okay? Are we in danger?"
"You can look through our ticket stubs if you think it'll help," the man offers. "We have a raffle drawing this evening, so there's going to be names and contact numbers."

Andromeda and Aquarelle explore the boat show, looking for anything that might be disguising an alien with a superweapon. Andromeda utilizes her scanner to check out each boat and RV for clues, but the density of the crowd keeps her distracted so that she does not harm anyone by bumping into them.
After moving through the exhibit hall, she is forced to conclude that there is nothing obviously dangerous. Shifting her thinking from looking for something hidden in plain sight to trying to pinpoint the device through other means, it dawns upon her that something called a cryo-phase detonator may have a distinct temperature signature.
And there is an ice-fishing display in the boat show.
* * *
Outside, Statian talks shop with Xeno about the high tech he is displaying. "You're a bright one!" he exclaims at her assessment. "Nuvoan tech is designed to interface with their inherent mental abilities, and that requires simulated organic structures for the best connections."
He studies Sam's threads for a moment. "Interesting appendages. They appear to have full access to your thought processes for instantaneous responses. How did you inhibit the subconscious drives?"

Ne'veah responds to Gui's texts.

Ne'veah: Joking. U will be fine. No one will be looking at U anyway ;P

Cryogenics.
Chroknight: Might have something. There's some cryogenics medical devices here. I'm going to check it out and see if I can't find V'orpl.

"Is there intel I should have, Gui?"
She doesn't really pause for as long as she should if she wanted an answer. "We should check out the ice fishing display. It could hide a thermal signature, and having an ice fishing display at a boat show is stupid. Not because-" She scowls and a lightbulb burns out overhead. "Ice fishing is always stupid because it gets you even colder than other fishing, but real ice fishing doesn't even use a boat, so having it here is stupider. We should examine the display."

Indarius shakes his head, "I can try to scry but it's exceptionally hard without knowing what our targets look like. Not impossible, but difficult. But once we get eyes on I can do a portal for everyone to show up."
He begins conjuring things, a bowl as well as some clear water to settle into it. As well as some chalk which he uses to draw a runic circle around the dish. "I'll see if I can't find anything like this though."

Empyrean is shown the raffle box, which is nothing but a mass of ticket stubs with names of people who were hoping to win a split pot of cash or some film memorabilia. The possible prizes don't strike her as something an alien mercenary would desire.

Elsewhere in the convention center, Gui and Andromeda explore the ice fishing exhibit. Even though the Bull gripes about the cold and the discomfort inherent in ice fishing, the display of the various temporary shelters available to sportsmen adhering to that particular hobby are enticing.
The pair work their way through the exhibit, feeling a deep cold in their bones as they look for signs of an alien cryonic device. Regardless of Andromeda's disdain, there are numerous people interested in the ice fishing shacks on display. When they try to peek past the exhibit facades, a pressing voice tells Andromeda and Aquarelle, ::Move along. There is nothing to see here::
Take a condition (your choice) to ignore the voice

Chroknight flits through the medical equipment, trying to spot an alien device that might freeze the entire planet. Thinking that the cryogenic equipment might be covering up V'orpl's weapon, they move in and look for evidence.
Their assistant CORVIS squawks at them, alerting the Janus to the danger of an armored figure slipping past security into the cryonics exhibit!

Indarius takes good advantage of the proximity of Xeno, using his alien template and then scrying for something similar but female. The gendered concepts are different but close enough for the draconic mage to zero in to a being several floors below him and in closest proximity to Aquarelle and Andromeda! He can't do much more than pinpoint V'orpl before a blast of psychic static cuts him off with a threat of serious mental damage!
"Okay, yeah. She's here, and she's good," Xeno says as his sensor device blares several alarms
What do you do??

Gasping and clutching his head at the Psychic backlash Indarius swears under his breath. "Ah-shh, she's there, and very defensive."
He tightens all of his eyelids in an attempt to shake off the pain behind his eyes. "Xeno I don't think I can shield against this level of mental attack, any advice?" Rising to stand again he gives a wave of his hand sending the bowl tumbling back into whatever pocket dimension it was pulled from, the water spilled on the roof washing away the chalk lines he'd made.

Andromeda. |

"Anywhere the ice is thick enough to fish, you shouldn't be able to get a boat," Andromeda recites, then scowls. "The shelters look good; the one we used to use was..." She scowls harder; the air around her fuzzes and sizzles. She steps away from everyone, away from Gui, hand held out in warning down between them, not at him, not at him, not at him, Never at him. "...not relevant. Telepathic suggestion to avoid the ice fishing display at the boat show. Countermeasures... holding?" she finishes into comms.

"Thanks, CORVIS," Chroknight tells their second best friend as they head to cut off the armored individual. Going at their pace, there didn't seem a possibly they wouldn't get there first. Going back to the normal flow of time for a moment, they looked this figure over and tried to get a sense on if they were Nuvoan or some third party.
"So weird question, from one armor wearer to another - do you prefer to powder before suiting up? I always worry about chafing."

Xeno gives Indy a sympathetic look. "Nuvoans as a rule don't care much for subtlety when it comes to other races. She won't use much finesse, probably, so your best bet is to overwhelm her; give her too many things to deal with at once. Oh, and watch out for weapons. She'll have more tricks than just her telepathy."

Chroknight intercepts the armored figure, taking a moment to study it and coming to the conclusion that there was most likely a human inside. "Wh--? Where'd you come from?!?" the electronically-distorted voice from the figure asks as they react to the masked hero appearing before them.
"Aww, this was supposed to be easy! One chance: walk away or you'll have more to worry about than chafing!" An electrical spark ignites in the figure's gauntlet as the suit charges up!

Indarius calls out to the alien, challenging her beliefs and demanding that she give up. V'orpl doesn't interrupt, although Devil Diva continues to chase Aquarelle's illusionary foes and the enthralled crowd presses against the barrier.
In the moment of respite, Andromeda evaluates the situation for an expedient resolution of the current crisis. Her threat assessment matrix concludes that Indy's human-centric worldview is unlikely to inspire the alien to surrender. However, the Nuvoan may be able to be goaded into a more direct confrontation by continued display of "perverse" powers.
When Indy's speech finishes, the team hears V'orpl's disgusted voice in their heads. ::Earth is not a recognized member of the Interstellar Council, and you never will! Your kind is still mired in inter-species conflict! Your 'sphere of influence' barely includes your own moon! This unimportant rock will be mourned by no one!::
Indarius feels an oppressive weight on his mind! ::Though you would make an interesting pet, creature:: He feels his will being crushed, as his nearly-forgotten black thoughts of Umboriax are coaxed to the surface!
Indy, take a powerful blow! If you get anything but a miss, your actions are reflective of Umboriax's persona (and you cannot remove yourself from the situation)

Give ground; opposition gets an opportunity
Indarius shakes his head and snorts at the mental intrusion. Slowly lowering Statian to the ground, nolonger above the mobs.
He speaks with a strange ethereal timber to his voice. "I am no one's pet and I'll make sure you regret ever thinking those thoughts."
Indy has barely stepped away from Statian before his form ripples away in a chilling whirl of icy fog. He now stands over her and shouts loud enough to shake the building, sounding more like a dragon than usual.
"Come out Worm!"

"We will trade names! You've set yourself up to be my nemesis!" Chroknight shouts at them as they disappear into the fog. "I...have to work on my fighting skills. Stupid...leg binders..."
They grunt and struggle, but even their increased strength isn't enough to break free on its own. "CORVIS! Find me some kind of tool that I can get myself free," They call out to their helpful avian friend, looking around for anything to help with this.
"Well, guess I should let the team know where I am at least."
Chroknight: Bad guy robbing the medical expo
Chroknight: I don't think they're involved in the cryonuke stuff
Chroknight: Also I'm trapped in a leg binder pls send help

Andromeda. |

She hates girl telekines for some reason. The static they complained about in Psionics? Insufficient data, probably not sex-specific. Major displays risk interaction with our target or bystanders...
It's almost anathema to her, but Andromeda relaxes her sheath, letting it fill the area around her with unstable force, but not as an attack, not as
a defense, not to propel or lift or be of use, just... to get attention.
Across the hall, the ships rock and sway and rattle.
She spares a glance to Gui's illusory duplicates running around, small tags helping her to track them as they race across her view.
Attention could be good

Chroknight can only shout ineffectually at the armored figure and call out for help.
Meanwhile, Statian puts her mental prowess towards looking for ways to disrupt the alien's psychic abilities. She realizes that the convention center has a wide variety of audio-visual technology to meet all the needs of any kind of convention. Repurposing them to blast disorienting sights and sounds may break the Nuvoan's concentration.
V'orpl's psychic attack on Indarius dredges up his terrifying persona, causing him to act far more monstrous than his usual restraint would allow! The control she had exerted over the crowd lapses, leaving them to flee in terror from the draconic might on display! Indy, take Guilty
Andromeda then sends telekinetic waves of force across the exhibit hall to draw out the alien. It works, as V'orpl finally shows her face! Her lithe form has several devices strapped to the skintight battlesuit she's wearing! She ducks away from the clouds of icy fog roiling off the dragon and dashes away from the ice-fishing exhibit and hides in the makeshift camping site!

Samantha Murphy: Statian |

As Sam's feet touch the floor, her mind whirls, she tags the job Aquarelle has done as exemplary, as well as Andromeda psychological manipulation and Indarius using his rage to snap the people out of the alien's control. But she doesn't have time to dwell "Indarius, Chronknight is in trouble at the medical device show. Your abilities allow you to get to them the quickest. If the 'leg binding' proves difficult to circumvent." which she assumes it will since the time traveler cannot get out of it "Returning them here will allow additional measures to be brought forth.
Phalanx, your abilities may be the most effective." since any tool is at his disposal.
"I am going to create a sensory overload loop that will break her concentration when her powers manifest again" data pours over the feed pinpointing each of the locations of the AV equipment Sam will be using.
