Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
Tavern Tale grunts as she takes a heavy blow from one of the troglodytes. Nonetheless, she takes a quick-but-careful 5-foot step, maneuvering to give one of her friends an opportunity to flank the creature (and hopeful that she herself might be in a flanking position before the end of the fight).
I really need some fighting lessons! I think I've got the theories and some of the techniques figured out, but my execution is atrocious!
Vesica +2 sap: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 for bludgeoning, magic, nonlethal damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

[dice=Vesica +2 sap]1d20+3 for [dice=bludgeoning, magic, nonlethal damage]1d6+3
You miss with that hit. The Trog faces Chestman, though, and not you. You're flanking him.
Sea Ranger |
The trog jumps back to avoid having its guts spilled out all over the floor, but not quite fast enough to avoid the nasty cut from Sea Ranger's curved blade. The druid dodges the creature's return attack, ducking under the blow and trying to finish his foe. Scout screeches loudly as a distraction, the eagle trying to gouge out one of its eyes with its wickedly sharp beak. Unfortunately, neither of the attacks are particularly effective...

Both are misses. The trogs move in for a second attack. Against Chestman and Sea Ranger! Using their clubs!

Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
Tavern Tale blurts out a quick cheer as Gothia terminates one of the trogs before again trying to whack one herself. The bard's unable to contain a squeal of excitement as her strike catches her foe flush on its scaly temple!
Vesica +2 sap (flanking): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 for bludgeoning, magic, nonlethal damage (SA): 1d6 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 3 + (1) = 5

The second trog is knocked out. Still alive and breathing, of course, but no longer conscious.
Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
"I did it!" TT squeaks, sounding as surprised as she is excited. "Think we can communicate with this thing once it comes around?" she asks her friends even as she loots her fallen foe.

The trog has a purse filled with 20 gp and 5 sp. He also had a club.
Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
TT shrugs at Chestman's words. "You're probably right. I was thinking more about the number of trogs we'd face in the swamp...along with how many cultists we might be leaving behind in the village to go about converting other innocents while we're away."
EltonJ |
"Now where did they come from and how did they get into the Temple?"
Sooo...how did they get in? Where did that secret door go? I thought it was just between floors or was that another one??
There is a secret door that is known by the Troglodytes that was installed recently. The door leads to the graveyard.
Sea Ranger |
Sea Ranger shakes his head as they locate this third secret door. "This place is riddled with hidden passages, I wonder if the other two were originally built along with the temple itself or if they're newer. Not as new as this one, in any case. Let's finish up our rest. Maybe we can block this one." But first, let's get that unconscious trog secured.
Sheesh, so many secret doors in this place! Let's finish up our rest and head back to the village tomorrow. Tie up the trog and keep watch over it as well, until it wakes up. Then we can try and ask it some questions before we head out?
Sea Ranger |
Sea Ranger picks up where he left off, heading to sleep and waiting for his own shift at guard duty as Gothia works to purify the temple...
Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
Tavern Tale keeps watch over the tied-up trog while Gothia finishes up her ritual to cleanse the temple. Checking the wound she received in the fight, the bard finds that it's mostly superficial and should heal up by morning without needing a cure light wounds spell.
Shouldn't leave a scar; I'll save my last spell in case we get any more nighttime visitors.
TT will keep an eye on the trog prisoner 'til Sea Ranger's watch.
EltonJ |
Yes, it's morning. The clouds were red as the sun came up, meaning that a storm is on the horizon. Also, Gothia completed her consecration spell. That made everything better and realized. The temple is rededicated to Merrikka.
The Trog awakes, and is bound and gagged by the group. The kitchen can be used to make your breakfast.
Krishka Whitetusk Galastacia |
Krishka is not making a mess of the kitchen, but somehow it feels surprising that she isn’t. She clearly has very little idea of what she is doing, but thankfully she is sticking to simple, boiling water with some jerky to make a stew, with a few dried veggies and fruits tossed in. Being an actual kitchen, she did find a pantry with eggs of all things. ”Anyone want to make these eggs while I work on stew?”
Sea Ranger |
The druid grins at Krishka. "I can handle eggs, I think. As long as everyone is fine with scrambled." Sea Ranger gets to work, presuming there are no objections.
As they cook and then eat, the half-elf ventures his thoughts on how they should tackle the day. "We can see if our trog captive is willing to talk. Whether or not he does, we have that map, and with Scout's help I think we can use it to find their stronghold. Once we've seen the trog secured in the jail, we should let the mayor know our plans, then grab enough gear and rations for the journey. And bug repellent." He adds with a chuckle.
Gothia VonSalais |
"I do not believe that will be necessary. We know where we need to go and how to get there. Let us gather our gear, drop this beast off with the mayor and his constables and be off into the swamp to destroy this evil. I fear this was just the tip of the spear..."
The paladin looks ready to go, but a close look will reveal her sunken eyes and lines of fatigue upon her brow.
Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
TT isn't sure what the best way to proceed is. Still, proceeding in some way seems imperative. As the party takes the troglodyte to the mayor or constable for safekeeping, the bard asks the creature (in stilted Common), "Why Reptile God make trogs raid human village?"
Still in the process of catching up....
Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
"Well, that was helpful," the bard says out of the corner of her mouth to her allies. I think the term "convert" implies a certain amount of free will and choice.... That thought gives her an idea for some follow-up questions.
"Do you know if anyone in the village willingly serves your Reptile God of their own free will, or are all of its converts kidnap victims? And how does this god convert people in the first place? What's so appealing about its goals or doctrine?"
Vesica "Tavern Tale" |
"Good to know," TT says. "I have no way of breaking a charm effect. Maybe killing this Reptile God will free charmed townsfolk from the cult and the naga's sway."
Not sure if other folks have questions for the trog before we drop it off, but I think TT's done with questioning it.
Sea Ranger |
"Is the Reptile God truly a naga?" The druid asks curiously. Then he turns to more tactical considerations. "How many of your kind dwell at the stronghold? How many of these 'converts' do you have? Do you have other allies among your numbers?"

"Yes, she is truly a naga," says the Trog. "We are many, most of us just want to be left alone."
Krishka raises an alternate line of questioning ”And just what makes you think you haven’t been charmed by your god?”
His pupils dilate at the question.
