The Pathfinders begin the adventure late in the morning after several days of travel from Heidmarch Manor in Magnimar to Kaer Maga, on orders from Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch. The City of Strangers and its 80-foot high walls loom far above them from atop the Storval Rise.

Prior to this, they have received a mission briefing from the venture-captain.

Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch' Mission Briefing:
Greetings, Pathfinders,

We have an urgent diplomatic mission for you, but not of the traditional sort. The Pathfinder Society has been negotiating for weeks with General Azaersi, leader of the hobgoblin nation of Oprak. Now that she has secured Oprak’s borders, the General has cast far and wide in search of useful allies: including the Society. Despite the General’s central role in the recent bloody conflict known as the Ironfang Invasion and the resulting instability in the region, she is potentially a powerful ally. The resurgent threat of the Whispering Tyrant must not be taken lightly, and an allegiance with Oprak could prove invaluable.

However, General Azaersi’s full intentions are unknown. To further ascertain her motives, the Society has agreed to accept a small squad of hobgoblins into its ranks. You are to meet this group, the Iolite Squad, in Kaer Maga, then escort them to a nearby training ground to conduct a series of joint training exercises. The training ground is near an ancient dwarven dig site that we have identified as an ideal location for these recruits to practice being Pathfinder agents; it is not a place of global significance, but it likely contains some interesting pieces of history.

After your joint exercises, guide the recruits in exploring the site. The hobgoblins are competent soldiers and we do not expect great danger, but you must ensure that they all make it out alive. This is a diplomatic mission, after all. Defer to the hobgoblins when exploring= they must prove themselves capable Pathfinders—but give aid if they request it. With this task complete, escort the Iolite Squad to Korvosa, where all of you are to book passage to Absalom and report to the Grand Lodge.

We have arranged for you to meet the Iolite Squad at the Sorry Excuse, an establishment in the Hospice District. Do not keep the hobgoblins waiting long upon your arrival to Kaer Maga. Most citizens of the City of Strangers will not blink twice at a band of hobgoblins, but the Ironfang Invasion has soured public opinion toward them. Be wary of those who may resent their presence.

From Kaer Maga, follow the river south to Sirathu, then take the southeast road for 30 miles. The training grounds and dig site are in a rock-strewn valley to the northeast of a small wood.

Go with care,
Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch

Kindly introduce yourselves. You might also want to include to purchase supplies before your arranged meeting at the Sorry Excuse inn. Also declare your needed Pathfinder provision for this scenario. You can check them out through the link under this GM alias.

The dust and mud from his travels still cling to his white fur robes, making them dark and streaked. A large white bird sits quietly on his shoulders, before silently rising into the sky. The bird looks down, before a soundless dive to snatch a creature from the ground, a small rodent clutched in it's powerful talons. The man with the longbow slung across his back, speaks in a low voice, "Well done my Snowly". The man stops and looks towards the tall city walls in front of him, "In many ways I prefer to be outside the walls in the wilds, for I question are such walls built to keep evil out or to keep it contained within." He shrugs his shoulders and continues, "but then at least I hope you and I, Znobe Nordmann, find a fine meal and ale to consume within at the Sorry Excuse."

His blue piercing eyes look intently at the city walls and the gate in the distance. "Let us get in and find these hobgoblins so that I can at least find our way quickly to the dwarven ruins after we are refreshed." He nods gruffly and puts an arm out for the owl to land, it's beak and face bloodied from it's catch. "Come Snowly, we have travelled far with these fine companions, it's not far before our quest will start in earnest."

I'll grab a lesser healing potion for my provisions. Thanks for the link!

The colorful gnome makes their way through the streets of Kaer Maga, relying on stealth and a cloak to mitigate their pastel-hued ostentation ... both of their clothing, but also of the large purple and pink hair upon their head, in an elaborate display.

Upon finally arriving at the Sorry Excuse inn, Highwire makes sure their wayfinder with the Pathfinder logo is visibly hanging from their neck, as they seek out others who appear to be part of the group ... or the hobgoblins they are there to meet.

As others arrive, the gnome bows and introduces themself, "I am Highwire Sanja, acrobat, trapeze artist, circus performer, and disciple at the House of Unfolding Wind at your service. And this is Zagnut." And there, among the hair on the gnome's head, you notice that some of it parts, and a purple and pink squirrel of matching hues peaks out, chittering in a friendly fashion.

Upon catching sight of the owl, however, Zagnut squeaks in alarm and vanishes back into the camouflage of the gnome's hair.

moderate healing potion for me, thank you GM!

Traveling with you is a half-elven woman in her mid twenties, probably more at home wearing expensive clothing at one of Zarta Dralneen's affairs, but is currently clad in sturdy explorer's clothing. At the hollow of her throat is a silver holy symbol tied with a black leather cord like a choker. Despite a fairly delicate profile, she doesn't seem to have too much trouble with her gear.

She flashes you a dazzling smile as she introduces herself. "Elixia Zielle of the savored sting, at your service." That last word emphasized just enough to be enticing. She looks at her fellow Pathfinder agents as they introduce each other in turn. "So, we put these hobgoblins through their paces and see them in action, hmm? If they're half as strong as their reputation, that certainly sounds exciting to me."

Snowly's head turns slowly to look at the gnome, Wellspring with interest, before a gentle voice says, "No my friend, even Wellspring has his own friend, leave the creature alone." He turns to look at Wellspring and nods.

Before he turns to the newcomer, his eyes intrigued, he blushes behind his cloth mask. "Hobgoblins have great strength, but there's more to surviving in the wilds than strength, guile, speed and a steady hand are equally useful, those we shall teach." he answers matter of factually. As a hand strokes the white birds feathers.

A middle-aged man of Absalom origin arrives to join the meeting. His long white hair, blue robes lined with yellow sigils and snake-like staff are marks that set him apart. Ezren is far from the most powerful wizard of the Pathfinder Society. But certainly, he is one of the most famous.

"Well-met fellow Pathfinders! I am Ezren and I understand that we're to babysit and train hobgoblin recruits. What isn't clear to me is the meaning of the words 'joint training exercises'? Who are we having these joint training exercises with, and exactly what are these training exercises?"

Upon their arrival at the inn, they can hear that laughter and shouts rise from the boisterous crowd that occupies the cheaply furnished tavern room at the Sorry Excuse inn. The staff move from table to table with practiced efficiency to take orders and deliver pints of frothing ale. Four hobgoblins seated near the entrance size up everyone who enters and ignore the mugs on their table. Though they are not unwelcome at the tavern, they are out of their element and visibly uncomfortable.

What would you like to do?

Elixia is well in her element in a tavern such as this, although she wishes there was music to dance to. With flowing grace, she turns and dances her body in artistic ways as she weaves a path through the crowds alongside her fellow Pathfinders en route to the hobgoblins' table, making an attempt to quiet things down by casually fascinating the gazes of the tavern-goers around her as she passes them by.

A turns back and stares towards Elixia and his companions, before he realises what he's doing and turns back once more to the bar.

A female hobgoblin approaches the Pathfinders, giving a nod at Ezren that first meets them. She is slightly taller than the rest of the hobgoblins, her armor is well made, and her equipment — from her cloak to her sword and shield — is utterly unadorned save for the flag of Oprak at her shoulder. Highwire is not certain if she is the leader of the group.

"Sergeant Drussem," she introduces herself. She notices that her hobgoblin companions are entranced by the Elixia's performance that she snaps them out of it to focus.

"Attention!" she calls her soldiers to attention.

"With me is Akrag, a soldier" the introduced male hobgoblin soldier grins broadly and extends his lanky arm to shake hands with each of the Pathfinders, his belt bristling with small bladed weapons.

"Gintka, our sapper, an engineer," the female hobgoblin engineer gives a quick nod as Drussem introduces her before she returns to fidgeting with the metal buckles and sealed vials adorning her gear.

"And Ozaril, a veteran scout," the male hobgoblin commando gives a perfect salute, his fingers coming close to the many scars that cross his head.

"At ease." Drussem then pauses for a moment when she sees one of the Pathfinders heading back to the bar. She shakes her head before she continues.

"Our squad is ready." she says as she glances toward the exit. "We can discuss matters on the road." she adds. They begin gathering their equipment, settle their tab, and so on. The Pathfinders can see that the hobgoblins are eager to begin their journey. The bartender is visibly relieved when the group departs.

Heading to their next destination, the sergeant initiates the conversation from their side.

"What is expected to become a member of the Pathfinder Society?" she begins.

Elixia gives a good-natured smile when the hobgoblin leader draws her troops' attention away from her, and she obliges by ceasing her distractions in turn, from the hobgoblins and her fellow agents.

"Ezren and Highwire said it very well. Sometimes we even have to engage in more social and diplomatic liaisons on our missions, and so having agents with expertise in all different manner of skills is useful on a team of agents working...closely with one another."

Sergeant Drussem absorbs every word as the Pathfinders describe what they do for the Society.

"Though becoming Pathfinder agents was not our first preference for an assignment, as members of the Iolite Squad, we are recognized among the best hobgoblin candidates for such a mission. We believe that the Pathfinder Society has much to offer regarding knowledge, resources, and practical experience, and we hope you can help ingratiate hobgoblins with others throughout the Inner Sea." she shares her thoughts.

The group continues their travel while Znobe struggles to follow a certain river toward their next destination. Fortunately, their hobgoblin companions seem to know the way. The roads surrounding Kaer Maga are generally well traveled, and the Pathfinders and Iolite Squad cross paths with many people as they make their way south. The hobgoblins do their best to appear friendly, but most travelers give the group a wide berth, some even moving to the side of the road to allow the armed hobgoblins to march by.

The Pathfinders and their Iolite Squad companions make their way along the road several hours south of Kaer Maga before looking for a spot to rest for the night.

"We are proud to serve Oprak and view the new nation as a symbol of hobgoblin strength and endurance in the face of adversity." she continues. "Teach us the skills we need to learn, but before that, we must find a place to rest.

But their search is interrupted when they encounter a pack of wargs attacking some traveling merchants who were setting up their own camp near an abandoned homestead. The path winds through the rugged, wooded foothills for several miles before opening onto a small ravine. A dilapidated homestead lies in ruin to the south, and a nearby campfire sheds flickering illumination on the surrounding outcroppings.

"Help!" screams one of the merchants.

Swallowed :
(attack) The monster attempts to swallow a creature of the listed size or smaller that it has grabbed in its jaws or mouth. If a swallowed creature is of the maximum size listed, the monster can’t use Swallow Whole again. If the creature is smaller than the maximum, the monster can usually swallow more creatures; the GM determines the maximum. The monster attempts an Athletics check opposed by the grabbed creature’s Reflex DC. If it succeeds, it swallows the creature. The monster’s mouth or jaws no longer grab a creature it has swallowed, so the monster is free to use them to Strike or Grab once again. The monster can’t attack creatures it has swallowed.

A swallowed creature is grabbed, is slowed 1, and has to hold its breath or start suffocating. The swallowed creature takes the listed amount of damage when first swallowed and at the end of each of its turns while it’s swallowed. If the victim Escapes this ability’s grabbed condition, it exits through the monster’s mouth. This frees any other creature grabbed in the monster’s mouth or jaws. A swallowed creature can attack the monster that has swallowed it, but only with unarmed attacks or with weapons of light Bulk or less. The engulfing creature is flat-footed against the attack. If the monster takes piercing or slashing damage equaling or exceeding the listed Rupture value from a single attack or spell, the engulfed creature cuts itself free. A creature that gets free by either Escaping or cutting itself free can immediately breathe and exits the swallowing monster’s space.

If the monster dies, a swallowed creature can be freed by creatures adjacent to the corpse if they spend a combined total of 3 actions cutting the monster open with a weapon or unarmed attack that deals piercing or slashing damage.

❗ Blue Warg: DC 15 Flat Check vs 1d4 persistent bleed damage ❗

EFFECTS & CONDITIONS REFERENCE

Pack Attack :
The warg’s Strikes deal 1d4 extra damage to creatures within the reach of at least two of the warg’s allies.

Restrained :
You're tied up and can barely move, or a creature has you pinned. You have the off-guard and immobilized conditions, and you can't use any attack or manipulate actions except to attempt to Escape or Force Open your bonds. Restrained overrides grabbed.

Fascinated :
You're compelled to focus your attention on something, distracting you from whatever else is going on around you. You take a –2 status penalty to Perception and skill checks, and you can't use concentrate actions unless they (or their intended consequences) are related to the subject of your fascination, as determined by the GM. For instance, you might be able to Seek and Recall Knowledge about the subject, but you likely couldn't cast a spell targeting a different creature. This condition ends if a creature uses hostile actions against you or any of your allies.

Grabbed :
You're held in place by another creature, giving you the off-guard and immobilized conditions. If you attempt a manipulate action while grabbed, you must succeed at a DC 5 flat check or it is lost; roll the check after spending the action, but before any effects are applied.
