Noggin NineToes |
Noggin nods in agreement with Lidya "Yeah, as fun as the caves look, it would be bad if more of those things follow us in..." His voice is still hoarse as he absently rubs his neck.
Cirri Merryweather, the Strix |
Cirri moves to Delta and tries an Ocean Balm on his wounds. "Is your neck okay? I see bruises there. The same spot Noggin was grabbed."
Ocean's Balm: 1d8 ⇒ 7
"Well, all better."
She listens to her teammates and then shrugs. "Maybe we should just go north for now and double back to here."

From Cirri's Ocean Balm, and while under Minor Curse of Outpouring Life from his Life Mystery, Delta will only be healed by 6 HP.
GM Brenael |
Rain looks downcast but brightens when Noggin forgives him. After a short while he is back to enthusing about the ruins. "This is so amazing, it must be Azlanti, see this design here?"
Looking through the doorway to the east you see a long dark hallway stretching from south to north. An exit leads off from the northeast point of the hall, while a branching hall to the north is covered from floor to ceiling with debris. A single stone door is closed near the southern end of the hall.
Noggin NineToes |
Reinvigorated by Delta's ministrations, Noggin goes boldly forth into the unknown. "Bet there's even more this way!" He says to the excitable Leshy as he walks by on his way to the hallway. Never being one who could resist a closed door, the young goblin makes to open the first one he comes across... After a quick check of course, or at least a cursory glance.

Actually, I guess this is a secret roll now? Either way, Noggin will try to open the door if possible :)

The door is stuck but judicious application of the barbarian lock pick has it open in short order. In the room beyond you find a pile of discarded loot. You work out it contains a lesser darkvision elixir, two
minor healing potions, and a +1 short sword.
Just a bit past Noggin, Delta (with Niccolo's help) spots grooves in the walls that look around the right size to be part of a spear trap! Between them they also work out that the left hand 5 ft square is where the trigger plate is located for the trap.

"Trapped? Why would it be trapped? Sounds too dangerous to go around trapping all your doors and hallways, what if you forgot?" Confident in his logic, the young goblin sets to looting the place, his eyes wide at the sight of a magic sword "Oooh! Can we keep it?" He asks hopefully, cradling his shiny new object of affection.
I'd like to make immediate use of this unless someone else wants to use it.
He is then outraged at the discovery of a trap in the hallway "I mean, anyone could have walked into it!" But is determined to continue along deeper into the ruins, only now with a little more caution.

Cirri pulls out a kit of carefully maintained tools and starts work on the spear trap. The mechanism is very old and this makes it all the more difficult to disarm. Her first attempt on the baroque mechanism is unsuccessful. The second almost ends in disaster when she nudges the wrong wire, but intuition kicks in and she freezes just in time. With that knowledge though, she is able to release and gently relieve the pressure on the trigger. A large barbed spear slides harmlessly out of the slot in the wall.
GM Brenael |
All is quiet back in the entry chamber and Priya doesn't notice anything stirring in the caves. However, the more she looks at it, one patch of frost on the ground near the cave opening looks very suspicious, almost as if it is leeching warmth from the area around it. (marked as a gray square.)
This is a brown mold, an unassuming fungus that leeches heat out of the
air. It can be removed using Survival or maybe it can be reasoned with?

With a shake of her head she decides to rejoin the group, "Watch your steps around here... Besides traps there's some spots of extreme cold about... Which is odd given the climate." She warns.

Delta leaves the corridor and goes back to investigate what he identifies as brown mold. He is unable to clear it though, but it doesn't seem to react to his presence.
At the mention of brown mold, Rain stops poring over the ancient spear trap mechanism and moves back to the entry chamber. He calls out from the stairs "Hey, did you find some mold? Maybe I can talk to it? What do you think?"
Meanwhile back in the corridor, Morthos spots another of the spear traps...

Had anyone physically moved into the cave, beyond spotting the mold from the prior chamber? I guess if somebody is moving into the cave we should pull back from advancing down the trapped hallway were were traversing.
Yes, Delta needed to come up to the mold to use survival on it, so is currently in the cave. If one of the others in the corridor (Noggin, Cirri or Priya) votes to come back I'll move the entire party to the cave entrance. Alternatively if Niccolo or Delta want to leave the mold and cave alone then we can group up in the corridor.
Priya Samara |
Priya only held back at the mouth of the cave to make sure nothing was actually coming up behind the ground and then rejoined because she has fast elf legs (she can clear 105' in 1 round).
Priya blinks at Rain's comment, "Perhaps, but probably best not to double back yet." She responds, looking to what the mushroom leshy had been working on, "Better to finish what you're currently working on and marking the hazard for anyone that comes through after us."
Noggin NineToes |
Noggin, caught between traps and fungus doesn't know what to do but wait for his comrades to deal with the danger. However, given his propensity towards falling unconscious, one thing he knows for sure is that splitting up is a bad idea if he wants to get out of this alive. He looks up and down the hallway, scratching his furry blue head "We should all go this way, right?" He says, pointing deeper into the ruins.
I don't mind which way we go, as long as we're all together. Continuing through the ruins seems the most logical, but if Delta really wants to investigate the mold, I'm fine with going in the cave
Priya Samara |
"Ah..." Priya blinks a few times as the party seems to head back the way she came, scratching her head a bit before sighing and moving to collect the potions from the side room before catching back up.
I assume Noggin took the sword?
Noggin NineToes |
Noggin shrugs, then heads off back the way they came "Sorry Priya, I already picked up all the good stuff!" he says as he passes the studious elf, hefting the shiny sword in his off hand.
When he reaches the cave, he scratches his head once again at the sight of Delta closely inspecting a patch of mold "You said you can talk to it, Rain?" confused at what mold would have to say, he asks "Would it like a drink? I've got some water here somewhere... Then maybe see what it knows about the creatures here?"
Yes, I'm going to use the sword for the rest of the scenario, but if you want it, Priya, it's yours!
Delta Variant |
Seeing that he can't make something with the brown mold, Delta loses interest in it and rejoins the group. "Hey, wait for me!" he yells behind them. "Those molds are somewhat boring," he motions to Rain and Noggins to quickly follow him back with the others.
Delta will be rejoining the group.
GM Brenael |
The group returns to the corridor and the issue of the trap. Cirri takes a few attempts but eventually succeeds in disabling the ancient mechanism.

As you approach the corner, both Delta and Niccolo notice another set of grooves in the stone that indicate the presence of a trap just around the corner.
Cirri can move up and will again manage to disable the trap without the spear skewering anyone.
As you move forward, Rain's enthusiasm will mount "I wonder what all these traps are guarding? Ooh it must be valuable and interesting!"

Looking around the next corner, you see a short narrow corridor leading to a large circular chamber. A massive stone column ten feet wide rising from the chamber's tiled floor. Strange glyphs dance along the column, pulsing with dull green light, though many of the glyphs wink in and out of existence as though malfunctioning. The ceiling here ascends twenty feet from the floor. Collapsed stone debris prevents the use of two connecting halls to the west and southwest, while breaks in the eastern walls open the area to an adjacent network of caves.
Lit up by the dull green light are two giant mobile plants with vicious looking leaves!
