Now THAT’s a neat trick, Lueck. Puts a new meaning to the Kiss of Life.

GM rolls:

Sandling Bite vs Indus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Bite Dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Sandling crit confirm vs Indus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Bite Dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Uh oh…looks like this was a bad time to nerf the Sacred Ibis

Angered by the sudden assault of both blade and water, the sandling rises up to it’s full 10 ft height and issues a long, hoarse challenge that sounds like a bucket of gravel poured down a stone chute.

Then it comes crashing down on Indus, long fangs sinking into his neck and shoulder. It retracts without letting go, tearing muscle, sinew and veins in a gutwrenching shower of blood.

The brave young archeologist, betrayed by Bes, turns pale as alabaster and tumbles to the floor.

Confirmed crit for 16 total damage. I have Indus at -5 and dying.

Like Sand Through the Hourglass - round 1
Initiative order
- Lueck, Indus (dying), Seben-en-Ra
- Sand Creature
> Sobekhotep, Diorio

Sobekhotep, casting a grim look at Indus, stabs at the Sandling.

MW Cold Iron Longspear: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19, for 1d8 ⇒ 6 damage.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

Sobek's spear slides into the serpentine form, but finds limited resistance.

Hit, but DR applies. Do you want a move action/5-ft step?

Grand Lodge

Male Samsaran Wizard(Spirit Binder / Thassilonian Specialist) 2 (HP 2/8) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 11) (Fort -2, Ref +2, Will +5) (Init +0) (Perception +10)

Nope. Sobekhotep would never dishonor Sekhemet by retreating from combat (not getting into melee in the first place is another matter entirely). Besides, I don't want it to eat Indus.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

Noted. There's a difference between retreat and tactical movement, though...By the way, don't forget to update your hp with the CLW from Lueck.

Male Varisian Human Swashbuckler 2 (HP 20/20) (AC 18, 15, 13) (CMD 16) (Fort +1, Ref +7, Will +0) (Init +4) (Percep +4) Swashbuckler 2

Hearing the commotion and cries of pain and possibly death from his comrades, Diorio rushes into action, weaving past his fellows to stand astride the fallen Indus, flashing his blade in wide arcs to draw the strange creature's attention to him, knowing his own attacks will be all but futile.

"Try your fangs on me!"

Fighting Defensively slash: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 8 - 4 = 21
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

"Get Indus out of here!"

Will use a panache point for Dodging bonus if the beast attacks me in addition to the fighting defensive bonus

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

GM rolls:

Sandling dmg: 7

Sandling AoO vs Diorio: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Bite Dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Despite Diorio’s attempt to ward off the sandling’s attacks, the elemental lands a bite before he can get his defenses up. Sadly, the AC bonus from defensive fighting does not kick in until after the AoO. Diorio takes 5 dmg

He retaliates at once. In another impressing display of swordsmanship, Diorio slices deep into the sandy body, doing significant damage despite the disadvantage of his thin blade.

Diorio, after the attack I have your effective AC at 22 until your next turn. Seben and Lueck are up for round 2 (and Indus, if he is healed enough to regain conciousness).

Female Human Hunter 2

I'm not sure I'm using the right term here, since we're in the same initiative grouping, but Seben wants to delay until after Luek goes, it could be helpful to see what's he's doing so we don't conflict. But she definitely wants to go before the sandling.

Also, I think I should double-check where Diorio moved. Is he now in the square immediately south of Indus?

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

You are free to arrange initiative as you want within your group. So Seben can certainly wait for Lueck, then take her turn before the sandling. Its AoO resets on its turn. Diorio’s description indicates that he is standing over Indus, sharing his square. Remember, you can move your token in the slide deck.

Seeing Indus go down, Lueck readies his wand. He casts the curative magic it stores. Again, he delivers its magic to Indus with a wet "splurt" from his tongue.

Cure light wounds from his wand, heals 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8, wand has 24 charges remaining.

Male Varisian Human Swashbuckler 2 (HP 20/20) (AC 18, 15, 13) (CMD 16) (Fort +1, Ref +7, Will +0) (Init +4) (Percep +4) Swashbuckler 2

"Hah! So you can be hurt! Be gone, or die the death of a thousand cuts!"

Male Human, Taldane Bard (Archaeologist) 2 (HP 11/14) (AC 16 (17)/13 (14)*/13) (CMD 16) (Fort +0, Ref +6, Will +3) (Init +3) (Perception +5)

With a groan, Indus gets back to his feet, still hurting from the sandling's blow.

He grasps his sword in two hands and hacks at it, calling on Bes to guide his strike.

Reactivating Luck, as it went when he went under

Attack with Longsword: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 2 = 221d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 = 13

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

This time, the God of Luck shows a much more favorable response. Not only is Indus able to rise unmollested due to Diorio's intervention, his strike also slices a large section of the sand serpent loose.

The sandling thrashes wildly, now obviously badly injured and still slightly hampered by the water from Seben's spell.

Solid hit. Seben to act. Note, Lueck needs to be closer to Indus to reach him with the tounge, but he can 5-ft step into the Ibis' square, since it is flying. I have moved your token to reflect this.

Female Human Hunter 2

I think something funky happened with the positioning on the map. I think everything shifted 5 feet west. Apologies if it was me!

Not sure it matters, as everything looks to be still at a relative distance. But just in case, Seben was at the top of the stairs last round.

Seben looks on in horror as the sand serpent downs Indus... and then he pops right back up again to renew his attack.

Go Luek!!

Eyes wide in terror, Seben continues to squeeze all the moisture out of the dark cloud she can, sprinkling rain upon the terrifying beast.

Standard action to cast create water. If Seben's not already at the top of the stairs she will move there.

Male Blackwisp Egret 3 HD

Seizing its moment, the Sacred Ibis flies out at the Serpent and darts around its head, trying to distract it with its wings in the tiny rainstorm. Then it swiftly flies back to Seben.

Going to gamble the sandling doesn't have Combat Reflexes here...

Flyby Attack to end the Sacred Ibis' turn in the same spot he started. The intervening standard action will be an Aid Another attempt.

Aid Another attempt vs AC 10, with animal focus tiger: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

If it works, the designated "friend" is going to be Diorio. We'll attempt to confer him a +2 buff to attack.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

You are right, the map had gotten shifted. I've fixed it now.

GM Rolls:

Sandling: 15 dmg

Sandling Ref save vs DC 13: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Sandling Bite vs Diorio: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 1 = 25 hit - crit threat
Bite Dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Applies

Sandling Crit confirm vs Diorio: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 6 - 1 = 15 Not confirmed

While the Sacred Ibis zips around and distracts the sandling, Seben sends another cascade of water down upon it. It still manages to evade most of it, but combined with the liquid it had soaked up from her last cantrip, it is visibly sluggish. The sandling is slowed and Diorio gets a +2 to the next attack from Aid Another

Neither distraction nor water seems to be able to harness the fury of raw elemental force. With another crushing attack, the sandling smashes aside Diorio's deft parry and tears another serious wound in the swashbuckler. 6 dmg to Diorio from another natural 20 - this thing rolls like a God. Fortunatly, the crit did not confirm this time.

Like Sand Through the Hourglass - round 2
Initiative order
- Lueck, Indus, Seben-en-Ra
- Sandling (slowed)
> Sobekhotep, Diorio

Grand Lodge

Male Samsaran Wizard(Spirit Binder / Thassilonian Specialist) 2 (HP 2/8) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 11) (Fort -2, Ref +2, Will +5) (Init +0) (Perception +10)

Sobekhotep continues to do his best to keep the Sandling distracted.

MW Cold Iron Longspear: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22, for 1d8 ⇒ 6 damage.

I am presuming that this thing can't be critted.

Male Varisian Human Swashbuckler 2 (HP 20/20) (AC 18, 15, 13) (CMD 16) (Fort +1, Ref +7, Will +0) (Init +4) (Percep +4) Swashbuckler 2

Absorbing the terrible blow, Diorio's mind refuses to deal with the pain...for now. Time to hurt later. Your enemy will not stop for you to lick your wounds.

Rapier thrust: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

Ouch, what a waste of nat 20’s :-( Sobek is sadly right that elemental traits makes it immune to crits. As a consolation prize, I’ll allow Diorio to recover his spent Panaché point.

Despite both making highly accurate attacks, Sobek and Diorio only manage to dislodge a bit more sand.

Rest of the gang for round 3

Male Human, Taldane Bard (Archaeologist) 2 (HP 11/14) (AC 16 (17)/13 (14)*/13) (CMD 16) (Fort +0, Ref +6, Will +3) (Init +3) (Perception +5)

Indus starts to edge around the creature to get an advantage, striking at its flank, calling on his arcane skills to enhance his blade.

Longsword attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 2 = 171d8 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 8

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

Reminder that elementals are also immune to flanking. Indus would know this based on his earlier knowledge check.

More sand flies through the dusty tomb stairwell as Indus’ blade slashes through the sandling. It now looks close to unraveling, but is still both alive and dangerous.

With Indus still looking a bit more scruffy than normal, Lueck focuses on him again.

Cure light wounds from wand, delivered with tongue. Heals 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5. Wand at 23 charges. GM, thanks for moving him for me.

Female Human Hunter 2

From atop the stairs, Seben sucks in a breath and tries to envision that the creature has some kind of center, some internal point from within where its power is sourced.

...She shoots at that.

Swift action to change the Sacred Ibis' animal focus from tiger to snake.

Attempted shot with mwk longbow with Precise Shot: 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 16

Possible damage from arrow: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Nope!

Male Blackwisp Egret 3 HD

The little bird strafes around the sand serpent in tight circles, trying to obstruct its vision and divide the creature's attention.

Flyby Attack to end the Sacred Ibis' turn in the same spot he started. The intervening standard action will be an Aid Another attempt.

Aid Another attempt vs AC 10:1d20 + 2 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 2 + 3 + 1 = 21

The Sacred Ibis has an AC of 14. But the animal focus (snake) will increase it to 18 (versus Attacks of Opportunity).

If the sandling rolls 18 or higher, we'll use an immediate action for bolster companion which will temporarily increase that to AC 22.

Diorio is once again the designated driver for the +2 bonus, if it happens.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

GM rolls:

Sandling AoO vs Ibis: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 - 1 = 13 miss
Bite Dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 N/A

Main attack target - 1=Indus, 2=Diorio, 3=Sobek: 1d3 ⇒ 2

Sandling Bite vs ?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 miss
Bite Dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 N/A

Once again, the Ibis does its harrasing fly by, and this time the sandling tries to slam it out of the air. The sacred bird is much too nimble to catch, though.

Frustrated, the sandling lashes out at Diorio, but the many injuries seem to have diminished its fighting power, and Diorio easily evades the blow.

Everyone are up

Grand Lodge

Male Samsaran Wizard(Spirit Binder / Thassilonian Specialist) 2 (HP 2/8) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 11) (Fort -2, Ref +2, Will +5) (Init +0) (Perception +10)

Sobekhotep grimly keeps plugging away at it...

MW Cold Iron Longspear: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11, for 1d8 ⇒ 7 damage.

...but his divine inspiration appears to have faded.

Male Human, Taldane Bard (Archaeologist) 2 (HP 11/14) (AC 16 (17)/13 (14)*/13) (CMD 16) (Fort +0, Ref +6, Will +3) (Init +3) (Perception +5)

Realising the futility in trying to flank a flankless creature, Indus presses the attack again, trying to connect to some kind of 'vital' area.

Attack with longsword (Luck, Arcane Strike): 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 101d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 2 = 9

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

Neither Sobek nor Indus manage to hit the sandling. Looks like battle fatigue is taking its toll on both sides.

Female Human Hunter 2

Seben is going to "delay" so that Diorio and Luek go before her, that way, the Sacred Ibis can potentially renew the Aid Another for the next round (if there is one...).

Male Varisian Human Swashbuckler 2 (HP 20/20) (AC 18, 15, 13) (CMD 16) (Fort +1, Ref +7, Will +0) (Init +4) (Percep +4) Swashbuckler 2

Feeling inspired by the determination and aid of his friends, Diorio keeps up the attack, opting for a banderole cut to maximize damage potential to such an amorphous creature.

rapier cut: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30

damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

With another flawless fencing maneuver, Diorio does indeed maximize the damage done. His banderole cut dislodges another large section of sand, leaving the sandling thrashing in agony.

It is clear that another hit is almost certain to defeat the creature.

Lueck and Seben/Ibis - finish him!

Female Human Hunter 2

Nice! This combat has just had a wicked number of 20's rolled. Luek, I'll give you the honor, man! You've been our MVP here.

Female Human Hunter 2

Hold it, maybe a better idea...let's try to buff him instead.

Seben casts guidance on Luek. He's currently right next to her.

Seben cheers when she sees Diorio deliver such a powerful cut.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

I’ll also take this opportunity to remind Lueck that he’s currently in possesion of the groups only bludgeoning weapon.

Male Blackwisp Egret 3 HD

The Sacred Ibis flies forth once more, swooping in and around the serpent, screeching like a banshee.

Flyby Attack to end the Sacred Ibis' turn in the same spot he started. The intervening standard action will be another Aid Another attempt, but this time with Luek as the designated friend.

Aid Another attempt vs AC 10: 1d20 + 2 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 3 + 1 = 12

As before, the Sacred Ibis will rely on animal focus (snake) and if the sandling rolls a total of 18 or higher, we'll use an immediate action for bolster companion to try to survive a terrible, terrible mistake.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

Sandling AoO vs Ibis: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 miss
Bite Dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

The badly injured elemental has no chance of hitting the agile ibis.

I'm afraid the Ibis can't select Lueck as the target of Aid Another, as he's not currently engaged in melee combat with the sandling. Do you want to designate a new target?

Female Human Hunter 2

Rats. I mean, frogs. Let's spread the avian love and make Indus the designated driver.

With his allies at least on their feet, Lueck gives in to his goddess's bloodlust. Divinely inspired, he drops his axe and pulls his mace. He rushes forward and engages the creature.

Small Heavy Mace to hit 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Alas.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

The sandling recoils from the savage charge of the grippli warpriest. Under assault from all sides and struggling to maintain its structural integrity, the elemental sways from side to side, as if trying to decide which of the many pain-inflicting intruders to strike.

With a final coarse and grinding roar of frustration, it receedes slowly backwards down the stairs before it slides up against the tunnel-ridden south wall and burrows into the loose sand, abandoning the defense of its lair.

Withdraw, then flee into the loose earth - combat over.

In the aftermath of the bloody engagement, the entire Smokin' Bask Brigade can almost feel the satisfaction of Sekhmet resonate from Lueck's axe, his holy symbol and the mask you discovered in the other hallway.

The Gods are Watching - everyone recieves another Hero Point from a victory won through a combination of combat healing and martial prowess.

Sobekhotep offers up a brief prayer.

"Thank-you, Lady of Slaughter, for watching over us. Truly, the Gods look after those who look after themselves."

He then channels magic into himself and Diorio.

"This will sting a little, but I promise, you will feel almost as good as new... physically, at least."

Two castings of Infernal Healing upon myself and Diorio.

Once everyone has healed up (i.e. after a minute, so that Sobekhotep and Diorio have both regained 10 hp), Sobekhotep will cautiously descend the stairs.

"Thank gods, that is over," Indus says and wipes sweat and blood from his forehead.

"Is anyone okay?

Indus digs out a wand of hazel engraved with blue runes, holds it over his deepest wound and intones and incantation. "Corylus avellana maxima!"

With that, his wounds close up, leaving only a faint bruise.

Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

He offers the use of the wand for anyone else injured.

Seben's eyes are still wide with adrenaline as she steadies herself to try to catch her breath.

"Is it over!?"

She scans the rubble, looking for signs that the beast might return and attack from another angle.

I recollect Jace previously floated the option of resting. I suspect healing is not a huge issue given the Bask's resources in that department, but how are people for their X per day stuff? Do we need to recharge here? I recall there is some advantage to clearing burial sites quickly as you can then be assigned the next one, so we should consider that, but it might also be safer to tackle whatever comes next at full strength. Where are people falling on that continuum?

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

The resting I suggested was just a short 5-10 mins to heal via spells, channel or the wands several of you are packing. It’s still only mid-afternoon in game terms. And while you could technically rest inside the tomb, you should expect all kinds of nasty things to come out in the Necropolis after dark.

Diorio checks the tears and holes in his clothing and armor and is glad this engagement is over.

"That was really close. Such a creature is not one for blade work. I sure hope there are not more of those lying in wait."

Sobekhotep shrugs.

"Mummies and constructs will resist arrows, blades, and clubs alike. It would be impossible to account for everything. Some targets simply require the application of additional strength to power through."

He then frowns.

"That said, in the future, back-up weapons like clubs and slings are certainly worth considering."

They are free, after all!

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

After a short pause to heal and recover after the perilous encounter with the sandling, the entire group moves through the western doors and further into the tomb of Ahkentepi.

A tapestry hangs from a frame against the south wall of this large chamber; it depicts an otherworldly vista where the souls of the dead, shepherded by strange beings, enter an ethereal river ambling through space toward a landscape dominated by an impossibly tall spire. Columns sculpted in the shape of Osirian warriors wielding khopeshes stand in all four corners of the room.

The floor is tiled in a white spiral pattern on a black background, and this spiral pattern is repeated on the stone double doors to the north, east, and west.

Ancient Osiriani:

Inscriptions on the north door read: "Ahkentepi" while the west door is marked "Didibastet". The second name also appears in the papyrus mentioning Ahkentepi's mistress.

Careful examination reveals no traps or hidden passages. Both the northern and western doors are locked (DC 20 Disable device)

"Best to check out the side chapel, before the main event, I suppose?"

Cool! I'm also good to go for that shopping trip Indus proposed, seems prudent to me. But if we are going forward:

Seben reads out the names on the doors for the rest of the Bask.

I feel like Didibastet is a name we should know at this point, if it matches the name of Akhentepi’s mistress. In the "ship room" we recovered notes about her. I'm not sure if we're actually carrying those records with us or if we've left them in the ship room to be recogered later. But if it's possible, Seben will do some reading under the glow of her light spell and see if there is any useful info that might somehow assist us.

Mummy's Mask Campaign slides | Storyteller extraordinaire

Seben’s study of the documents recovered in the room with the model ship do indeed indicate that Didibastet is the name of Ahkentepi’s mistress. In some sections, she is referred to as a priestess and that her tomb and funeral should reflect her faith and status. However, there is no mention of which deity she served.

Everyone ok to push on through the west doors?
