I think we can get this arrangement back on track...
DC24 Tea Lore (expert): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
DM rainzax
The Three Monks begin relaxing again - they sit in their seats and await the tea...
Vekka's CS brings us to 6 overall (3 needed), on the precipice of an overall CS - awaiting Kazuki's roll!
Kazuki Sato
Kazuki pulls the end of his sleeve over his hand and carefully picks up the hot pot by the (somehow very hot) handle. He calls out to the others in the dining room.
"Sorry! Sorry! Had a little mishap in here! I'm on my way!"
Diplomacy (clever improvisor): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
He hurries back into the room with the pot.
DM rainzax
It takes a while to figure out the logistics of the water, but the party combine their resourcefulness to eventually get that underway. And! Even though they can't technically "taste" the tea, the Three Monks ease into the ceremony with joy.
When the ceremony concludes, the last drip of tea poured down a dry throat unable to take pleasure in it's flavor, one of the monks steps forward “We know you seek to purify this place, and in thanks for your kindness, let us offer some as well. We used the interloper’s magical axe to cleave the head of your death goddess free then placed the head in the upper boughs of the sugi tree, as far from her body as we could reach. You’ll need to retrieve it if you wish to rectify our desecration of her statue.”
And with that, the three kurobozus crumble to dust!
The party, then, decide where to head next...
E2) Courtyard or E13) Tan Sugi?
Or maybe north to E9) ???
...all quiet...
Sigurd Kolphan, Season of Ghost
I bow to the ghosts before they crumble. "Thank you. Be at peace."
I turn back to the group. "Thank you for indulging my desire to avoid violence. And indulging my joy of art history. With that, we gained valuable information."
"Should we return to the tree to retrieve the head? With so much undeath, anchoring Pharasma will help weaken them, maybe get rid of them."
E13?
Auntie Wu
|
Auntie Wu stares as the dangerous monks crumble into dust. "Well, now we know how to not die while we do this. ... Okay. Good. Let's get Pharasma's head. And maybe backtrack to the library before returning to where we started. I'd rather put them *all* to rest before we risk starting a big fight with those three." She's utterly relieved that she didn't interfere with the guys' plan to have a tea ceremony. Her instinct was wrong this time, and she's not going to forget it.
Ho Lan
"Well, I wish I could say, 'I told you so,' but to be honest, I thought the tea ceremony was a lost cause as well."
I'm not sure where E9 is, but I think E13 / unbeheading is a good idea, and we should probably explore the courtyard and backtrack through all our previously explored rooms before opening up any new one.
Kazuki Sato
"Thank the gods those things didn't try to kill us." he says with a sigh of relief. "Good work on the tea ceremony, friends!"
"I saw that axe stuck in that tree earlier and was very intrigued. I wouldn't mind checking out the kitchen some more, though. It looked like there was a door to a pantry, too. Oh! And be careful in the kitchen. I spilled the pot and made a helluva mess in there."
Vekka Tchakon
If only all of our problems would crumble to dust at a tea party...
Vekka remarks, packing his tea kit back into his pack.
E13 sounds fine
DM rainzax
E13) The Tan Sugi
A massive, one-hundred-foot-tall sugi tree towers over this overgrown courtyard, bathing the monastery in its shadow. Glistening coils of rot and decay spread up from several of the tree’s roots to wind along its trunk, while many branches above are thick with immense spiderwebs. A large silver-bladed axe lies embedded in the side of the tree trunk about four feet off the ground; crusty rivulets of black sap glisten and run down from the wound.
The affliction sickening the tree will kill it in a few months, and its source seems to be coming from somewhere underground...
Surrounding the Mighty Tan Sugi, the party looks up to try and spot the statue's head...
Skipping the Perception check to spot the head as the DC becomes trivial....
...Sure enough, there it is, 75 feet up!
DC 15 to Climb - Climber(s) may keep rolling until 75 feet reached or CF!
...The Axe seems firmly wedged into the trunk, may be tricky to retrieve...
If you critically fail, the DC raises by 2 for the next PC, cumulatively!
Success?
Oh no make a Will save!
Please place your Tokens accordingly around the Tan Sugi!
Sigurd Kolphan, Season of Ghost
Sigurd looks at the tree. "So, there's the head. And here's the axe."
Athletics (T): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
"Gah. Tougher than it looks. It's wedged firmly in there. The monks mentioned it was enchanted?"
Auntie Wu
|
Nature (DC 20) to inspect tree: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
Auntie Wu is overcome with grief at the sight of the sickened tree. So overcome, in fact, that she is unable to think clearly enough to diagnose or understand what is happening. A low, keening whine escapes her throat. She falls to her knees, tears streaming down her cheeks. Mogu's filaments extend through her hair and down to her shoulders, hugging her with a comfortingly tight embrace.
Suddenly, she surges to her feet and dashes to the axe. She jumps up to grab the handle, planting her feet against the trunk of the sugi tree, and heaves with all her might...
Athletics: 1d20 ⇒ 12
...to no avail. The axe doesn't budge. She drops to the ground, placing her hand on a small section of the tree that isn't covered with rot, wracked with sobs. "I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry!"
Ho Lan
Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 vs DC 20
"Hey, I don't think this is the Tan Sugi tree. This looks like a decidious tree. I mean, decilious tree ... decidious? ... delicious?"
Athletics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 vs DC 20
"Wow, that thing is really stuck."
Vekka Tchakon
It's okay Wu. We have time to figure this out. I think Vekka consoles her, but a little unsure.
He unconsciously runs his fingers along the scabbard of his katana while eyeing the tree.
Inspect the tree (DC 20 Nature): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
He looks up until he sees the statue's head. But first... the axe.
Seeing Sigurd not quite budge it, he figures he may as well try.
Retrieve the Axe (DC20 Athletics): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

Climb (DC 15 Athletics): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 ⇒ goal!
He takes a moment to affix his rope to a branch nearby that he judges as strong.
It's only 50 feet of robe, but if his companions can make it up the first, safer 25 feet of the climb, it's better than nothing.
He gives his friends a thumbs up before turning back to focus on the statue head, looking for signs of the haunt or curse.
Sigurd Kolphan, Season of Ghost
With the axe removed, Sigurd is ready to climb. Vekka makes it look easy. "Do not despair, Auntie Wu. That axe was quite embedded. Let's get the head down. I have 50 feet of rope. We'll figure out how to get it down..."
Athletics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 10

Athletics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23 20
Athletics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26 30
Sigurd climbs up and grabs Vekka's rope. He continues climbing.

60 feet above the ground, Sigurd's hands slip...
Unsure of what happens if I'm holding a rope while critically failing. I will Hero Point it if it means I fall off the tree.

Sigurd Kolphan, Season of Ghost
Reflex to Grab an Edge: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Sigurd thanks the blessings he received as he panics to catch the rope.
Now 60 feet up, he realizes he should complete the ascent.
Athletics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17 65
Athletics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15 70
Athletics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25 75 ft up
And Sigurd climbs to the top. How large is the head of Pharasma? Can he tie it to his waist and climb down without using his hands?
"Vekka... if you can hold the rope and tie it around me, I can hold Pharasma's head and slowly climb down."
Kazuki Sato
Kazuki inspects the tree...
Nature (T) vs DC 20: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
"That axe sure did a lot of damage to that tree. Let's quickly get it out."
Vekka easily removes the axe.
"Good job!"
Kazuki stands back and watches Vekka and Sigurd deftly scale up the massive tree. He is skeptical to climb after the episode with the tower that had the strange gravitational effect. His stomach churns thinking about it.
"I'll leave the climbing to the two of you."
He is quite impressed at their climbing skills.
Auntie Wu
|
Through tear-stained eyes, Auntie Wu watches the guys climb the tree. She's far too short to reach the branches like they do, and not nearly strong enough to pull herself up all that way. All she can do is watch and try not to descend into despair.
@GM: Since all of us failed our Nature checks (except Sigurd, who didn't try and is untrained), under what circumstances would we be able to try again? Is it too late to Hero Point our rolls?
A thought occurs to her. It may be pointless, but she has to try. Reaching up to the cut left by the axe, she lays her hands on it, closes her eyes, and releases a powerful wave of vitality into it.
A 3rd Rank Lay on Hands will heal 18 HP to a willing creature or deal 3d6 damage to undead (DC 22 basic Fort). Not sure how it would affect the Sugi Tree, considering its corruption and the fact that it's not a creature (to our knowledge).
Regardless of the results, she knows that her magic is meager compared to what is needed to heal this tree. She sinks back down to Refocus, more tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm so sorry."
Vekka Tchakon
Whoops, let's see if all that climbing even occurred :sweats:

And then the other gauntlet drops, just as Vekka was about to analyze the statue's head's aura.

"More teeth will bring down this forlorn tree more quickly — surely you aren’t cruel-minded enough to let it continue to suffer?”
Some of the same "goo" that "bleeds" out of the Tan Sugi is evident upon this creature's maw. It's shape is humanoid, fox-iod even, but it's pallid skin cues that what might have once been a kitsune exists now on the other side of death.

@GM: Did Auntie Wu notice whether using Lay on Hands had any affect on the Sugi Tree?
Upon seeing the interloper, Auntie Wu surges to her feet. Its past-dead maw displays the harm it's done to the Sugi Tree. A flash of cold fury replaces her anguish. Her hands shake with barely contained rage as she casts Vitality Lash at former kitsune, giving it some extra force to propel it farther than the spell was designed to go.
