Erevan Dalanthan. |
Here's for Harsk and Rhaegal so Jinlong can focus on Chiwu and Khaul. Though I do have a question for ward medic. Does the 'treating two people at once' thing works as one check for both of them or do we roll separately for each?
Erevan takes out his alchemical tools and healing tools and tries to come with a concoction that would help alleviate the wounds of his allies.
Treat Wounds DC 20: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
Healing: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (3, 4) + 10 = 17
Treat Wounds DC 20: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Healing: 4d8 + 10 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 3) + 10 = 25
The rolls are for Harsk and Jinlong respectively. But if only one roll for both of them then just the first rolls.
GM Watery Soup |
Erevan: Ward Medic doesn't specify, but I've usually rolled multiple times because other feats that want to roll once usually specify roll once.
Khaul: I just noticed your shield's hardness is listed as 11 on your character profile, but 13 in the stat block. Can you clarify? Also, in terms of repairing your shield, the repairer needs to make a Crafting check.
The group takes a bit of time to heal and repair, but eventually, everyone is at full.
Rhaegal Dragonkin |
Rhaegal shrinks back to hunched form and smiles as Jinlong as he tends to his wounds. Dragon medicine was the best. "Sorry, but I haven't quite mastered casting spells when in that form. So much to learn about dragonhood. But this part of the path, I know it."
I did forget that Rhaegal can speak in animal form now. Next time!
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Jinlong doesn't need the healing. He was at 100% before he completed the Treat Wounds on Rhaegal (Pearly White Spindle Aeon Stone regenerates 1 hp/minute)
GM Watery Soup |
Can someone please make a Crafting check for the repair? The shield is a Level 4 item, so the DC is 19.
Jing Chiwu |
Jing and Ban Biao do some coordinated Lingshenese marching maneuvers while they wait for the party to finish fixing a shield.

GM Watery Soup |
After the fight with the boars, the Pathfinders continue northward, shortly thereafter reaching Kayajima Fortress.
The forest gives way to an expansive clearing. A gigantic statue stands in front of what appears to have once been an entryway. Up ahead, ruined spires and ancient stone buildings litter the grounds. To the northeast, a mountain rises toward the sky. To the southeast, the terrain slopes downward and a gap in the tree line reveals a view of the sparkling sea. The buzz of distant cicadas fills the air.
A tengu woman stares at the complex muttering to herself. She’s tall and elegant, with dark feathers, clad in simple robes and wooden sandals. A smoking fire pit and a run-down wooden structure are nearby.
See Slide 2 for art.
The tengu turns and speaks in a soft voice, “Welcome, Pathfinders. My name is Kukuha. Apologies for not meeting you in Sakakabe, but I deemed it necessary to perform some advance observation of Kayajima to see what I could learn about the rumored ley lines. Fola’s information has proven correct. There are indeed ley lines running through the island here, and quite powerful ones at that, though it seems something is interfering with their function.”
Kukuha looks across the panoramic vista, then continues. “It’s quite beautiful, is it not?” She motions to the northwest, toward the trees. “Makuzen Forest, the verdant bounty of the land.”
She turns to the sea glittering in the southeast. “Airishin Cove, resting by the sea.”
Finally, Kukuha gestures to the mountain in the northeast. “And Soruseiji Peak, stretching toward the sky."
"These are not only places of natural beauty; my research and divinations would appear to indicate that each is a kind of gate for natural power. They appear to be damaged or malfunctioning somehow, though, but I believe by placing special focuses at each, we can repair them.” She taps the ground with a talon. “And when that’s done, here is where I will carry out a final ritual—uniting land, sea, and sky— thus stabilizing the protective powers of the convergence. This should make it safe to establish our lodge.
“[b]Unfortunately, I have not been able to access these locations. That is where I need your aid. I have prepared several ritual focus items that should aid in restoring each gate. Travel to Makuzen Forest’s heart, Airishin Cove, and Soruseiji Peak, and take a ritual focus to each. I do not know what you will find there, but I trust that your instincts will guide you true.”
Kukuha then shakes her head. “We have to do this the right way. Kayajima is home to many creatures. To simply take the island’s powers and position ourselves as its tyrants—I cannot allow that to happen, and besides, honest negotiation is always a better foundation than force. Pay the island and its inhabitants the utmost respect as you carry out this mission. In this way, I hope the Pathfinder Society will be viewed as a welcomed presence rather than a conquering foe.”
Questions for Kukuha? If not, you'll need to decide in what order you'd visit the three areas.
Rhaegal Dragonkin |
Rhaegal bows and introduces himself. "Kukuha! I was worried when we didn't see you Sakakabe. I am Rhaegal, called the Dragon."
He nods as the tengu explains their task. "Yes, natural places can have great power. The forest, cove, and peak would serve as beacons for the safety of the island. What are these focuses that you have? Do they need anything to work?" The Dragon looks at the three areas to consider them.
Nature: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 To know anything about the three areas.
I think Forest, then Cove, then Peak sound good.
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Jinlong follows Rhaegal and bows to the tengu. "Well met, Kukuha! I am Jinlong. I am following in the footsteps of Rhaegal."
He's obviously trying too hard... :)
GM Watery Soup |
It's 2-1, with 3 PCs left to vote. First to 3 votes moves the party.
Harsk dwarf ranger2 |
"The forest seems a good place to start. I'm at home there." Harsk scratches his beard. "Same here...ley lines...More of a wizards thing I guess?" He looks at the tengu "Kukuha thank you for your hospitality"
GM Watery Soup |
Kukuha nods and hands the group what she found while clearing out the ruins of the fortress complex: a tile game made of bone, a box with several sets of brass chopsticks, and several stone stamps carved to resemble various animals. These relics all together are worth exactly 2 Treasure Bundles.
---
Then, she walks over to her campsite and returns bearing a small clay pot. Planted within the pot’s soil is a small sapling, with gossamer, rainbow-hued leaves sprouting from its budding branches.
“This is a rainbow cedar sapling, a magical tree attuned to the earth. It should make for an ideal focus for harnessing the power of the land.” Kukuha gestures toward the northwest. “It would seem the Forest’s Heart Gate rests within Makuzen. Journey deep within—this little one will let you know when you’ve reached the location."
As the group heads northwest, the forest grows dense, and as they travel, it becomes difficult to maintain a clear sense of direction. The Pathfinders spot occasional deer or birds darting between the trees. They cross gentle streams, climb up root-ridden slopes, and pass by the countless trees.
1d6 ⇒ 1
1d5 ⇒ 5
Once, while watching a deer, Erevan hears a small ding, but when he looks around, he sees nothing. A few hours later, as they are crossing a stream, Rhaegal swears that one of the rocks in the brook grew two googly eyes. But, when he looks more closely, they are gone.
Anyone can make a Nature or Religion check, if they wish. Erevan and Rhaegal will get a small bonus, and any character from Tian Xia or who has completed #1-06 will get a larger bonus.
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Nature/Religion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
The dice really hate me...
Khaul Irontoe |
Trained in both, not sure if I can roll both, but just in case/=
religion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
nature: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Khaul looks around the woods, enjoying he sights and sounds. "It's like me home. Just much, much bigger." he notes, a smile on his dour dwarven face.
Shield is hardness 11, base 8 for minor sturdy shield, +2 for shield spirit, +1 for dwarven craftmanship. I'll fix up the character sheet. The Myrsa character is for when he finally has enough cash to update her to the intelligent shield he has from a boon. RP wise she is his shield, but mechanics wise I've not bought her yet.
For repairs, with assurance, Khaul hits DC 19 crafting targets without needing to roll.
GM Watery Soup |
For repairs, with assurance, Khaul hits DC 19 crafting targets without needing to roll.
Excellent, thanks.
---
Many members of the party recognize the curious creatures as kodama, small kami spirits that guard the trees and forest. The kodama will not show themselves overtly, but as guardian spirits of the forest, it's their job to keep an eye on strangers.
---
The Pathfinders face several obstacles as they attempt to navigate the forest. This is a skill challenge, and each obstacle must be overcome by making a skill check. The skill check may only be made once, by one lead PC. Other PCs may Aid, but Aid must be rolled first - when everyone who has Aided has rolled, the lead PC can then make the actual check.
Challenge #1: Overgrown Path
The path disappears into a tangle of vines and brush. The lead PC can attempt (in ascending DC) Forest Lore to study the undergrowth, Survival to plot a path, Nature to understand the flora, or Perception to find a way. Alternate solutions are welcome, and creativity is encouraged.
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Jinlong aids, he has learned that although Dragons are great, they can't be great all the time...
Nature, Aid: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
Khaul Irontoe |
Khaul notes the moss on the north side of the trees. "See, that be different from where I be comin from. But if we be keepin it on the same side, we'll not be losing our sense of direction."
nature (aid): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Rhaegal Dragonkin |
Sacrilege, Jinlong! Rhaegal has a +12 in survival and can helm the check unless someone else has a better bonus. Also, could he use Guidance on himself for the check?
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Jinlong looks ashamed at Rhaegal's words.
GM Watery Soup |
could he use Guidance on himself for the check?
No, Guidance only lasts for 1 round and then there's a cooldown. Unless what you're doing takes less than 6 seconds, it won't be helpful.
Erevan Dalanthan. |
Erevan aids in identifying the surrounding flora.
"Now these don't usually grow in places like this..." and he drones off
Nature Aid: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Rhaegal Dragonkin |
Nature (aid): 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 12 + 2 = 34
Aids don't stack, right?
Rhaegal begin guiding them through the forests, occasionally stopping to sniff around and check the trail. Khaul and Jinlong are able to help him keep on the track. "Dragons are naturally able to find their way through rough terrain."
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Jinlong hangs his head in shame at Rhaegal's words. "I don't know what came over me..."
GM Watery Soup |
Aid doesn't stack, but it does override, so if someone Succeeds at Aiding, it's a +1, and if someone else Critically Succeeds, it's +2, and the Success is overridden.
Who is making the lead check?
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Points at Rhaegal
GM Watery Soup |
My bad, I read it as "I'm Aiding Nature," rather than "I'm rolling Nature, with Aid.
With Khaul's Aid, Rhaegal easily finds the way through the overgrown trees. As the group cuts through the dense forest, they come across an ancient guard tower, surrounded by trees that have grown since its abandonment. The tower consists of a crumbling staircase connecting the empty ground floor to a partially caved-in upper deck.
A little further on, the group stumbles on a kiln, which detects as magic. This is where the people of Kayajima’s past could create inventions that harnessed the island’s power. The Pathfinders find bare remnants of that past, notably bits of clay with carved channels similar to the statue at the fortress and a small glazed clay toy shaped like a dog.
I will wait for anyone who wants to roll for the spoilers to roll; I'll move on to Challenge #2 when everyone has attempted or given up.
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Religion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Jinlong picks up the toy and studies it. "Oh my. This is interesting." He activates the toy and puts it on the ground. The dog runs around in a playful pattern and wags its tail.
Society: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 Not this time
Khaul Irontoe |
craft(assurance): 10 + 9 = 19
"This be an old guard tower. Looks ta me that they be takin their design from th' Kayajima Fortress. Let's see what they kept."
Taking care, the dwarf quickly explores the old stonework. He squints at a badly laid stone, tut-tutting before trying to straighten it. Then, scratching his beard, he hefts it to one side!
"Well, look here!" he smiles, taking out an old rusted lockbox.
"A gift from the past."
--
Later on the champion cannot but be amused by Jinlong's playing with the toy. "Now that is a finely crafted wee toy yer have yerself there."
GM Watery Soup |
Challenge #2
A number of trees have fallen across the path, blocking the way. Each PC must attempt a check: Acrobatics to Squeeze through an opening, Athletics to Force Open a path, Crafting to find points of leverage to move the trees, or other skills/actions/spells.
Khaul Irontoe |
"Bahh. old trees and stinging nettles. Let me take the lead for a bit laddies and lassies. Just be followin in me wake, and we'll be through this spot o' bother before yer know it."
athletics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Rhaegal Dragonkin |
Are we aiding like last time or does each person need to make the check? Instructions seems different this time?
GM Watery Soup |
Yeah, sorry, everyone makes a check. I jumped the gun in describing the challenges earlier.
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Jinlong attempts to find a different way around the fallen trees.
Nature?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
A rather crestfallen Jinlong heads back to the group, unable to find a way.
Rhaegal Dragonkin |
Rhaegal stares at the fallen tree obstacle. He turns to Jinlong. "On some rare occasions, it is advantageous not to be a dragon." He chuckles and then recalls the very first time he attempted to transform into a dragon.
Suddenly, the kobold shrinks down and within seconds a golden and copper colored lizard sits on the ground. Without wasting further time, it skitters towards the trees, slipping between the limbs and through the obstacle.
Pest Form
Erevan Dalanthan. |
Erevan studies the trees and carefully points out locations that would help them move the trees.
"Over.... there!"
Crafting: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
Jinlong Dragonkin |
Jinlong gapes as the lizard heads through the obstacle.
You do realize, of course, that his hero worship of Rhaegal will increase tenfold
