Venice - The Year of Our Lord 1309 – Thursday April 3, 1309

Doge Pietro Gradenigo has put down the rebellion that nearly toppled his leadership. The Mortals have settled down as the fighting resulted in a swift decisive victory for the Doge and his allies. Despite excommunication, Venice will not bend to the demands of Pope Clement.

In the shadowy world of the Cainites though, Disaster has struck!

The nascent Camarilla “Inner Circle” has been scattered by the very same Hunters that the Camarilla was formed to blind Mortal eyes to. The architect of this sect and the Prince of Venice, Narses the former Archbishop of Nod, has been slain. It is not known yet who else has been reduced to ashes or if they have merely fled. What is clear, is that the Elders who did escape in many cases did so by sacrificing the very same Childer they claimed to hold so dear…

From this catastrophe Narses has been replaced by a triumvirate of his Childer Magdalena Castelucci Borcellino , Alejandro “the Prince in Exile”, and Lord Leopold Valdemar. Chosen by a mysterious Cappadocian, Lord Bion, hand-picked by the shadow essence of the Dead Prince himself. Will those Elders remaining in the city fall in line or seize this opportunity to stake their own claim to the powerful city of Venice? Can the Cainites remaining afford such a War with the Inquisition so close at hand?

The Childer of the “Inner Circle” who have remained behind in Venice stand to gain much by successfully navigating the dangers posed by these Hunters. The Final Death stalks the canals of the city by day and by Night though as one of their own has betrayed the Cainites. Sir Dunstan Füller of Clan Brujah must be destroyed at all cost.

The Beach on the Lido - Alessandro Khadaji

The sun has set, it is finally time for you to rise from your temporary watery grave. It was a gut wrenching decision, one that may permanently drive a wedge between you and your Love. But. Duty calls, you cannot abandon your first Love when she needs you, or does she need Il Corvo?

Or are you and your alter ego now one in the same? After all, Alessandro was the mask you wore by Day. Now, you may only move about Venice by Night.

The Lido was of course the most logical place to return, these Knights may watch the docks but they cannot watch the beaches too!

As you shake off the salt water and scan the houses along the Lido in the darkness... Make a Perception+Alertness roll DC 7 - 2 successes required

2 Successes:
As you linger over one opulent beach front manse, a figure within watches you, eyes two piercing red dots!

Let's say you are currently at 19 BP, one to wake for the evening as you would have fully fed from your herd before embarking on a long sea voyage.

BOTCH!

You spin around, believing you hear something behind you... BUT, it is merely the crashing of the waves.

Where do you go from here?

Alessandro is frustrated, but gathers his wits. Lorenzo...

The Beach on the Lido into Venice Proper - Alessandro Khadaji

You head to the aide of the Lido to find a boat to slip through to Venice proper, not that you couldn't swim but you would like to dry off at least a bit before you begin to walk the more crowded streets and draw attention to yourself.

As you search the beach for a craft you hear a sound behind you of someone clearing their throat...

Alessandro is genuinely curious, what more could happen tonight? Slowly he turns to consider the source.

The City of Padua - The Child Tremere

As you wake, Eliastor whispers in your ear of the rumors that have the Court of Prince Guilelmo Aliprando abuzz.

An organization, called the Camarilla, in the process of being formed by the Elders of each Clan to end the War of Princes, appears to have been attacked by Mortal Hunters during the Day. The Elders have been forced to flee and many have come through Padua. It is unclear what Elders have perished at the hands of these Hunters, but at least some if not most of the Childer of these Elders, Embraced to create cohesion in the new organization, were left behind to perish so that their Sires could be free.

Rumors from several days ago confirmed that your own Sire, Radek, had by some miracle, won the leadership position for the Usurpers in this Sect despite his status as a rogue. That alone almost convinced you to visit Venice, so nearby. However, your distaste for Radek delayed a visit. After all, did not Radek abandon you to a fate of immortality in the body of a child for his own selfish pursuits? In some ways, you are kin to those abandoned Fledglings! Certainly, Radek may argue that he left his own Gargoyle behind to “protect” you, but Eliastor acts more like a Mother Hen than a mighty guardian.

Pushing your thoughts about your Sire aside, there may be opportunity in the chaos. If visitors were forced to flee might not residents of the city have been forced to flee as well? Is there now a power vacuum among the Cainites in Venice? Here in Padua, you are an oddity to the Prince. A member of his "Macabre Menagerie" as the many Cainite visitors to the city have nicknamed his residents. But, is an oddity ever going to wield true power if that is all he is ever seen as?

Eliastor advises against such a trip, after all, Cainites are collectively the target of these Hunters and neither of you exactly blend! Still, you decide that at least further direct investigation is warranted. Thus, it is to the Gypsy you must go.

The Dancing Gypsy

The Gypsy is the heartbeat of the City for Paduan Cainites. Both Elysium and Court of the seat of power of Prince Guilelmo Aliprando, Childe of the mighty Narses of Venice.

You step into the Tavern in the heart of Padua and as always, the place is raucous with several Bards paying instruments and singing and patrons dancing. The lyrics are dark and disturbing being sung in an eastern language and even though you cannot understand the words something about them is compelling those present to move, it makes your skin crawl. Eliastor is beside you, hiding his bulky form with that of a large bulky blacksmith his go to “mask”, the mask is imposing enough that few stop and stare at him long.

Your eyes are drawn to the back of the room, almost uncontrollably so. He is southern Italian in complexion with long dark hair and a dark goatee, the Prince. He is seated approximately ten feet from the dancing revelers, as they dance, they glance in his direction now and then as if seeking his approval. Standing next to him are a man and a woman. The woman has a crooked smile and a dazed look in her eyes. The man is long of limb and tall. She and he mouth words though no sound is uttered from their lips. Both are part of his menagerie. Both of unique Bloodlines – Daughter of Cacophony the female, Kiasyd the male, if you remember correctly.

As you approach you see that he is already holding Court, a recent guest in his domain, a Ventrue Gustav Breidenstein, and a Cainite you do not recognize. Other Cainites that inhabit the city are also here observing, though there is a new face or perhaps two in the spaces reserved for Cainites.

The singing becomes louder to drown out their conversation. You can hear them speak, as if right into your ear, regardless of the volume and it appears that their audience has just begun…

Note that the language being spoken is Italian.

”Greetings Prince Guilelmo, I am Bajazet al Nasir of Clan Assamite. I find myself here after having fled the troubles of Venice”.

”Be welcome Bajazet’.

Gustav cuts in, ”You see Prince Guilelmo, there is clearly cause for action as I have advised”.

The Prince frowns. The two Cainites behind him continue to speak in tongues as the dance becomes a bit more frenetic but only slightly so.

”Suggested, Patrician, suggested. You are not my advisor. I assure you that things are under control and even if they are not, we are here in Padua and safe from these Hunters”.

The Assamite shrugs, ”I care not to go back there again Gustav. The cloak I used for protection from the sun to escape has been destroyed and it cannot be utilized again, the Viziers shall have my hide for its sacrifice, I am sure. I am passing through Padua and announced myself as a courtesy, not to seek retribution.

This Camarilla has started on shaky ground and these Mortals may well have slain it in its cradle”.

The Prince’s flanking Cainites sing a dirge that gets the Mortals within to dance a bit more slowly, sorrowful looks upon their faces.

Gustav responds, ”You would flee now? This Sect has just formed, we must rally behind it and show force against these Mortals that dare strike at their betters”.

The Assamite shakes his head, ”I must report to the Old Man what has occurred, he may well change his mind based upon what has transpired. If he does not, I will send a missive to Hardestadt the Elder. If he does, the Silence of Clan Assamite shall be our answer as to whether we have any interest in continuing to play your political games”.

The Prince’s eyes flicker to Gustav, who appears disgusted with the Assamite. Gustav does not bother replying as the Assamite has made his opinion on the matter quite clear. Al Nasir bows to the Prince and exits the Gypsy. The Prince then turns his eyes to you and Eliastor, ”Greetings Neonate, what is it you wish to speak with me about this evening?”

Gustav steps back, realizing he is dismissed, but refusing to be sent away from his audience so summarily.

The Beach on the Lido into Venice Proper - Alessandro Khadaji

Standing behind you is a familiar face, albeit one which is half burned, it is "Prince" Alexander of Clan Ventrue.

"How fortuitous for you Alessandro that I spotted you exiting the sea. I am interested to know what led to your predicament. I also offer you temporary lodgings with my own current landlord". He chuckles at the turn of phrase.

"Franz Albert Capsali, also of Clan Ventrue. I believe you both met in passing yes?"

Alessandro offers a respectful bow of the head, along with a smile.

Politely, he replies. We have, yes.

What brings you out? And... what happened? Certainly your landlord can help with that. No?

Mine own predicament is the story of a man protecting that which he loves. Dearest Venice, my home.

Still on the Beach on the Lido - Alessandro Khadaji

"As I said, you bring me out. One of my Clan, though not of my lineage, exiting the sea I am sure is an interesting tale and my curiosity got the better of me".

He chuckles, "Indeed my Landlord has done quite well aiding me. Wounds from the Sun and Fire heal slowly even for the most ancient of our kind Alessandro.

Narses attempt to assassinate me with Hunters has failed. Of course, I must now decide how best to react to his... provocations. Before I do so I must reach my full strength once more".

He pauses and continues, "Protecting that which you Love? Do you speak of the Mortals and their aborted coup attempt? On which side of that war did you fall? My understanding from Franz Albert is that it was practically over before it began.

I understand your sentiments Alessandro, I miss mine own beloved city. Treachery abounds. That miserable Wizard and my childe stole it from me, the city I brought into prominence. Their time will come, patience.

First, Narses". A look of hatred and rage crosses his face momentarily. He as quickly calms down. Perhaps being trapped in the body of a teenage boy has prevented him from ever truly growing?

He refocuses on you and your response.

I wish I could tell you I was blindly fanatically loyal to your cause and to you, My Lord... Prince. I will not lie to you.

When I side with you, it will be because I am genuinely with you against your foes. And, by Venice... I mean just that, the whole of it and nothing in particular.

Cainites are a part of its rich history as of course are mortals. The culture, literature, art and trade... the street people and nobility. Every clan including my own Ventrue.

Every person, place or thing having its role in the organism that is Venice.

He pauses a second, judging the Elder's reaction... his own thoughts having gotten away from him.

Please, forgive my waxing poetic. Plainly asked, what are the avenues from which you choose? Or perhaps best to pursue multiple avenues simultaneously. My limited understanding is...

Direct action will result in sighting and further expose us to the mortals. Perhaps pit Narses' forces and the Hunter's against one another... thereby weakening both and allowing you an favorable opportunity. That sounds quite... Venetian.

He frowns, "Franz Albert advises me of the same.

Perhaps I dwell overmuch on the world when it was simpler and revenge could be meted out with ones' own hands.

Come, let us retire to Franz's abode that we may discuss our shared strategy, mine for vengeance, yours for saving your City from a threat you perceive which is currently unclear to me.

Though we are not aligned, we should be young Alessandro for we three are the only members of our Clan present in Venice at this time. Gustav is nearby but I have yet to Summon him back to us, one more mouth to feed is unnecessary no?"

Franz Albert's Haven - the Lido - Alessandro Khadaji

You both walk along the beach in silence. It is difficult not to peek at Alexander from time to time, he is the literal Greek god come to life in appearance and likely, raw power. He has been in existence for nearly 2,000 years.

The walk is short and you enter the manse, still dripping wet, a Manservant appears and suppresses a sniffle at your appearance, "My Lord Alexander, can I assist?"

Alexander turns to him, "Fetch fresh clothing for Lord Alessandro, he will be staying with us, temporarily".

Alexander heads down the hall and around to a set of stairs up to the second floor. The architecture and interior style of the home is from perhaps half a century ago kept in impeccable shape. At the top of the stairs is a short hallway, one door to the right and two to the left with double doors ahead.

Alexander walks through them and seated at a large mahogany desk, is Franz Albert. The desk and the shelves and furniture around it contain stacks of paper and scrolls. Not dissimilar to your own office at home. His operations appear larger, at least by volume of paperwork, but then, Franz has some connection to the royalty of the Holy Roman Empire and likely, access to even more resources than yourself.

Franz stands up, "Alessandro Khadaji, greetings. I did not expect to see you this evening".

Alexander responds, "I found him exiting the water, quite literally". Franz has a look of slight confusion upon his face.

Alexander closes the doors behind you as you enter, "Now, Alessandro, be seated, tell me, us, what exactly has transpired the last few days that led you into the sea? Your answers thus far have been vague, if not outright elusive".

Alessandro:
I will let you decide how much to tell but as Alessandro was an NPC for a bit, here's what happened to Alessandro since you exited the game: You and Alyssa attend Court to free Baldemar and discover that April 1, (the day OF) the mortal Hunters struck all of the Inns (plus the Mausoleum) slaying or staking Cainites.

Alessandro volunteered to aid in a rescue of those captured and being held prisoner at the Basilica. At the Coterie only strategy session, Andrew the Hardy revealed that he had true faith. Both Onfroi and the Lasombra Tassilo (a new OC who is now and NPC) looked quite disturbed by that revelation. Andrew handed his holy blade to Baldemar.

Before you left, Alyssa asked you to reconsider and stated that it was time to leave and report to Mithras directly, you refused her request and went forward with the coterie.

[Feel free to check out that full scene - check out the Second Bloodline thread around the dates of mid-January 2021].

As the group arrived at the Basiclia, someone spotted the Knights exiting with a coffin, not sure what that was about, you and Onfroi gave chase on roofs.

Before the wagon could fully break out on a run to ships, you both struck and rescued the captured Cainite and escaped having severely injured the two Knights (you did not stick around to finish them off as there were witnesses beginning to gather at the fighting).

[Feel free to check out that full scene - check out the Second Bloodline thread around the dates of March 2, 2021].

The Cainite (unfamiliar t you and Onfroi) was brought by you and Onfroi to your Manse, having found a meal for her, she was unstaked and stated she was Lydia, of the Lamia Bloodline and the bodyguard for Lorenzo Cappelli, though she had never attended Court.

Alyssa thereafter firmly stated that it was time to leave, she offered passage to the Courts of Avalon for the Lamia (there is a Cappadocian Elder who is the Seneschal of Mithras) and for Onfroi.

[Feel free to check out that full scene - check out the Second Bloodline thread around the dates of May 7, 2021].

Thereafter, you all journeyed to Cappelli Storage (now of course owned by the Khadaji Family!) to pack yourselves in crates and have Alyssa's bodyguards load you onto the last Khadaji ship in the port of Venice (the rest being out east at the moment [not counting the one that was burned by the Giovanni].

As you arrived, you discovered the rest of the Coterie there, Michele Querini, Lorenzo Cappelli, Geoffroi de Clairvaux (who had just been embraced the night before by the Salubri), Ranerius, and the now DMPC Andrew the Hardy. Onfroi opted to stay as did Lydia, now reunited with Lorenzo.

Also there was Victor la Rouche, the Toreador childe of the now deceased Helene, slain by the Inquisition. For a boon, Alyssa offered to take the Toreador instead. Then you were all packed and placed on the ship.

[Feel free to check out that full scene - check out the Second Bloodline thread around the dates of May 11, 2021].

Alessandro would have made an appearance in the 1400s thereafter but as you have returned to be a PC, instead we have you sneaking off the ship, despite the desires of Alyssa. The pull to Venice was just too strong.

One open point, in the confusion and press to leave the City, you never did find out the fate of Baldemar post Cainite rescue from the Basilica.

Feeling like he's being interrogated.

Hunters attacking Cainites, what's there to tell?

I accompanied Onfroi to the Basilica, where we... commandeered a wagon containing a coffin, dealing with a few knights and rescuing Lydia.

Elysium burning and choking Venice with Hunters set to ambush Cainites that approached. I assume Narses survived and went to ground.

Assuring that my Sire Alyssa was safe and away, I returned to Venice.

You probably know more than I do.

Franz Albert's Haven - the Lido - Alessandro Khadaji

Franz's eyebrow raises and he turns to Alexander, "As I suspected Prince, this was not an attack upon you directly".

Alexander scowls.

Franz turns back to you, "Despite your brief time away from the city, you indeed know more than we do Alessandro.

Alexander, in his weakened condition, did not wish me to investigate any further possibly risking detection. So we have been here the last few days, procuring vessels to aid the Prince in his recovery.

So these Hunters were able to actually capture one of our kind? I am not familiar with Lydia".

Alexander cocks his head, rare human emotion from this ancient being, "These Hunters attacked Narses Elysium and chased the Prince to ground? This is an unmitigated disaster for his Camarilla.

The purpose of this gathering was to protect our kind from the rising tide of Hunters locating and slaying Cainites. Now the heart of the sect designed to prevent these circumstances falls victim to that very same malady".

Answering the Prince, first... Betrayal. Either planned or opportunistic. Pure and simple.

Perhaps his strategy and tactics offended or treated this or that dangerously powerful individual.

But, the groundwork had been laid... and the dangers revealed. His failure does not mean the idea was not sound.

Perhaps the Ventrue might pick up the pieces. Perhaps his Camarilla can become our Camarilla.

Considering, Several Cainites were captured. Not one. Lydia is Lorenzo Cappelli's bodyguard, of Clan Lamia. I just met her myself.

Alessandro seems to brood, lost in thought.

Alexander contemplates as well then speaks, "As long as Narses is present, his hold on this city will remain.

Ventrue leadership within this Camarilla is certainly likely to ascend, that is quite a valid point Alessandro, especially if we three can salvage this disaster on behalf of a fumbling Narses.

Hardestadt seems truly committed to this Sect, while Mithras is indifferent, no doubt his interest is in just keeping abreast of what the Black Cross is doing. Fabrizio Ulfilia worked here through Lady Jadviga, though it was not overtly discussed, none trust him as his center of power is too close to that of the Holy See of the Pope. Alone, without claiming his was the ass for the seat, she stood no chance against myself or the lines you both represent. Moreover, his dalliances with the remaining Elders of Rome, anachronistic wretches they have become, are yet another problem for him".

His complete stillness is of course, a bit unnerving, it makes him seem that much more inhumane. It is quite telling that once his sense of vengeance becomes suppressed, his analytical skills are enhanced. Alexander is almost as bad as a Brujah in temperament, it is no wonder his Childe and the other Elders of Paris wished him gone! Perhaps more absurd is his characterization of Cainites, though ancient, younger than he as anachronistic.

Franz picks up the thread of the captured Cainites, "Were the remaining Cainites rescued or did they perish at the hands of the Hunters?

We should absolutely begin ascertaining who remains standing in the city. I made contact with a Nosferatu who I believe could help though our negotiations are in their infancy".

Venice by Night - Thursday - April 3, 1309

Franz Albert's Haven - the Lido - Alessandro Khadaji

I know nothing of his whereabouts, but if he's alive... he's on the run. From what I could see, he didn't lift a finger to save the Cainites of Venice.

His status is neither here nor there, at the moment. We can proceed to assemble the other Cainites... the other Clans. And, eliminate the Hunter threat. If we work together, with the others... we will succeed.

I too have had contact with the Nosferatu, and I wish to win them over... but as you, my negotiations are in their infancy. Something about a waterway... He waves his hand encompassing Franz Albert's business paperwork. Perhaps you can help me. We can help each other, though I'll admit your operations seems many times the size as that of the Khadajis'.

I have contact with Geoffroi de Clairvaux of the Salubri, Lorenzo Cappelli of the Cappadocian, Michele Querini of the Setite, Onfroi of the Nosferatu and Ranerius Bernerius of the Toreador.

Truth be told, I could not guarantee they would follow me... But, they would certainly listen to what I had to say. And, if the right time comes, I may be able to communicate with my Sire and therefore Mithras himself.

How many more do we need?

He pauses for a spell. Uncertain if he should have shared as much, but he was dealing with an ancient... the information could easily have been gleaned.

Lord Alexander, what is it you want... I can hardly fathom. I'm incapable of comprehending what one as powerful as yourself might desire. Except, maybe one thing...

Paris?

Franz responds, "Indeed, we can certainly aid one another Alessandro at least in the long term.

In the short term, regarding matters pertaining to the Cainite world, you have more contacts in Venice than I do. If Elysium was attacked, I have no idea where to start reaching out to those few Fledglings I did meet.

Likely I can find my Nosferatu contact....

Prince Alexander, what about you, can you contact any other Cainites in this city or were your own interactions also limited to Elysium?"

Alexander grins, "I vouch for Onfroi as a Cainite of great cunning and intellect, he is an ally of mine as well.

The rest of the Fledglings you name I know only in passing. My own entourage was slain by these Hunters, all but one. I dare not summon that one for fear she may lead the Hunters to our doorstep.

I can summon Gustav, the Ventrue Ancillae who is currently located in Padua, not far at all.

I have no other allies here, at least not any longer. I was informed by the Prince of Constantinople that he was sending a fresh ally to me but he never arrived, perhaps he was slain by the Hunters as well".

He pauses and grimaces, remembering pain, "When the Hunters attacked me in the Winnowing Inn there were at least a dozen if not more.

Some were... powerful. Powerful in a way I had never experienced a Mortal to be and I am nearly 2,000 years old. I was forced to flee, out a window. Luckily I made it directly into a canal in a single leap, my flesh seared by the sun on the way down was protected once I struck water due to the filth of this city.

Are several of us enough? By Night, I believe so. By Day, no".

Alexander focuses on the final question. "Indeed Fledgling. I want Paris.

That is all I want, but I must find allies willing to aid me in that battle. Alone, I know that I cannot challenge, Geofroi, Goratrix and the Grand Court Toreador such as Francois Villon.

That is my purpose for attending the Camarilla Conclave, staying in the east I was able to gain... more power. Power with which to challenge that foul Wizard!

But, with this Camarilla as my ally I believed that my return to Paris would be all but assured. Instead, I was thwarted again in my ambitions. A trend which has been ongoing for nearly a century". His eyes glow with fury for a moment.

He regains his composure and continues, "I will help you save your city Alessandro, if you help me reclaim mine".

Yes. He can barely say the word quickly enough. They regains himself, with a genuine smile.

By the time we dismantle whatever conspiracy is behind this attack upon Cainites in Venice, we will be ready to start taking back Paris. We will keep in mind that wherever possible, the actions we take support the move on Paris, should you choose that path... Lord Alexander.

Suddenly the weight of events and the nights and days ahead weigh upon Alessandro's brow.

Padua? If allies are close in Padua, then so are enemies... who is Prince there, my Lord? Anyone who may gain with an attack upon Narses and the Camarilla?

I would counsel your safety comes first. Heal. Gather your strength. Summon no one.

I am familiar with Venice and have both Cainite and mortal contacts. Allow me to be your emissary... of sorts. An agent take steps as you stay concealed.

May I allude, if not state, that you are with me, with us... against the Hunter threat and whomever is pulling their strings? Or should I make no mention of you? Troops... as it were, will need someone to rally behind.

I will play it as you wish.

Turning to Franz. Tell me how I can help you as I go about my tasks... I am with you against our enemies, bloodline aside. We can sort things among ourselves afterward.

For now, let us focus on action. Do you know of any other Elysium in Venice? That may be where my contacts went.

Alexander smiles, pleased with the emphasis on his eventual goal.

"I am not aware of Paduan politics.

I will need two more nights before I regain my full strength.

Let those you come in contact with believe I have been slain. While your revelations fit the narrative that Franz has been in favor of, I still believe that it is in Narses best interest to be rid of me. We shall soon know who was right.

Tell any you come across that Franz is safe and the hierarchy of the Ventrue leadership of the Camarilla is intact. While Franz speaks for Hardestadt, you speak for Mithras, your voice his. Even from afar, I and my Brothers and Sisters in blood carry authority be not afraid to wield it".

Franz stands up and extends his hand to you, "There is nothing to sort out, voting has already done so. I represent the Inner Circle, you the Justicars. Our financial entanglements will need to be set aside, for now.

I believe that there are other Elysium, but I was never told much about the city. My task was to learn from those Elders still here.

Seek the Nosferatu, they will know. There is also a Toreador Anacillae here in the city, but where she dwells is unknown to me.

If you need a false identity, that I can assist with".

Thank you both. Here's all that we know... it's coming back.

The inns were attacked by the Inquisition, either by tracking or Clans or other means - a traitor or traitors perhaps, found all of the temporary Havens and that includes the permanent haven of Clan Giovanni

Narses' Elysium has been burned. But, I heard about a Toreador Elysium... a gallery.

The Elders and Anacillae that are still in Venice include the Seneschal Lord Valdemar, Alejandro Prince of Jerusalem, Radek of Clan Tremere and Khay'tall.

The neonates Bernardo Morosini, Michael Santo and Savio Ingannatore should still be around.

At the Basilica - the Inquisition's home base, we freed several Neonates but no idea if they remain... Vitaliano da Riva, Antoine le Fanu, Lutz, Giovanni Dal'este, Cantor and a female Cainite embraced by an unknown Elder.

The mortal world is in turmoil due to the Pope excommunicating the entire city over a dispute in Ferrara and further turmoil has come in the form of an attempted coup of the Doge by several powerful families including the Querini family.

He takes a breathless breather.

If any of those names seem familiar, any information is appreciated.

Now, a false identity sounds interesting. How would that work?

Alexander still appears dubious of the claim of traitors as it does not fit his current narrative, thankfully, he gives up pushing back, "Lord Valdemar is one of the younger members of Narses brood, not the youngest, that is Savio. He became Seneschal after Brexiano was dealt the Final Death by the Rogue Assamite El Cid. Narses did not appear overly distressed by this..." Alexander appears ready to go off on a tangent but reigns himself in.

"Alejandro is also a childe of Narses, much as I hate to admit such a thing about a Magister, he and I have a kinship of sorts as he is the Prince of Jerusalem in exile. After the initial Crusade to retake the Holy Land, he somehow became Prince of the city. With the arrival of Salah al-Din and his victory at the Battle of Hattin, a history I am sure you are familiar with my Saracen friend, the west "lost" Jerusalem and Alejandro was forced to flee by the Assamites that rode with Salah al-Din. I am surprised that Bajazet al Nasir did not attempt to slay the Lasombra as he still clings to the belief that he can reclaim his city.

Radek is a contemporary of Alejandro. I dislike that one, he has always been brash and arrogant even as a Fledgling no doubt it runs through his cursed Bloodline his progenitor being Goratrix. How he became the head of the Clan considering his Rogue status is strange, perhaps the Tremere slaying of the Ravnos Clan upset more Elders than they were publicly willing to admit or perhaps their Blood magic is seen as a threat and creating strife atop the leadership of the Usurpers was the underlying purpose of his victory.

Khay'tall is the most interesting of the four, he was Rogue from the Serpents a thousand years ago and sought refuge in the Byzantine Courts. Before the Fall he was rumored to be destroyed but yet here he is. Then again Michael survived, albeit in a weakened form through the Cainite that calls himself Talisman. Considering how frequently his Clan travels through Venice, I am surprised he revealed his presence here unless he believed that the Camarilla and Narses were best positioned to protect him from them as Michael once had ensconced him within the "Dream".

I have never heard of any Bernardo.

Santo is the Childe of Radek the Tremere. I have already mentioned Savio.

Vitaliano and Lutz von Hohenzollern are both Childer of Antione le Fanu, Vitaliano the younger and Lutz the older. Again, considering Antoine's history with Dark Selina that they never came to blows is a testament to how many Elders believed that they could utilize this Camarilla to their own purposes. Putting aside centuries if not millennia of hatred for a greater objective. le Fanu is old, dating to the Roman Emperor Domitian. I remember because he began to trouble the original Camarilla at this time, almost the same year that I began my rule of Lutetia, what is now referred to as Paris. They will prove the most useful to us, if we can find them, there is wisdom in the madness of the Malkavians.

Giovanni Dal'este and Cantor are the Childer of Bajazet and Milov respectively.

The Childer of the Inner Circle are mainly locals, like you Alessandro and will know Venice best and probably have homes and families here who could be tracked down that way. Of course, if the Hunters know this, they too can track them that same way.

The female Cainite, is no doubt one of my Childer, a pity if the rest have been slain. If you find her Alessandro, do return her to me for safekeeping.

What I do not know, is where any of them lair, perhaps the most important piece of information to us at this moment.

The Mortal worlds affairs are of no concern to me. I have seen many Kings, Tyrants, Emperors, and Pope's come and go, the future will be no different".

Franz considers Alexander's commentary, "The amount of Elders Rogue from their Clans that attended this Conclave is astounding".

Alexander replies, "There were others who were Furores as well, the radicals of Clan Brujah one of the Gangrel I believe.

Narses is a well known deviant himself in many ways".

Franz turns to you Alessandro, "I can give you a new face, of course, it would be painful. But, it will provide you with anonymity if you believe any of these Hunters would recognize you as you travel in the wider city".

Alessandro seems put off by the idea of his face changing, and no small bit by the pain it would entail. He waves the idea off gracefully and politely, even as it is being spoken.

His attention fully on Alexander... That is a lot of information, I shall endeavor to remember and put it to good use.

The name of your female Childer? Is there some signal I could give her or something I could mention such that she would trust me?

Agreed the affairs of Mortals do not interest us much, except... he pauses a non-existent breath.

Perhaps it's nothing but, what if the timing is not coincidence My Lord? What if the happenings, the history being made by Mortals and Cainites are related? Indirectly or even tangentially?

What if the excommunication and warring of the Mortals predicated or necessitated the Hunter's decision. An Inquisition of Venice, a... cleansing.

Franz shrugs as you waive off the idea, "As you wish".

Alexander snorts, "Names? There are several, until I see this one again, I won't know which survived. I did not endeavor to learn their names by heart...do you know the names of all of the Mortals in your Herd?"

Franz nods at your suggestion of conspiracy, "That is why I mentioned so many Rogues present at once. All very coincidental".

Alexander contemplates the hypothesis, "It is true. Through our history, where powerful Mortals tread so do those Cainites that seek to control them, or use the Mortals endeavors for our own gains.

Sometimes the Mortal world is influenced by our schemes, sometimes, the reverse is true.

It is unknown to me who controls Ferrara. Did that Prince take exception to Mortals under the sway of Narses interfering in the affairs of his sovereign state? Did Narses even send any Cainites to Ferrara?

Narses had many enemies and many allies, I do not know all of his intrigues. The Lasombra are often rife with them.

In Court it was insinuated that the Crusades that left Venice a century ago and that sacked Constantinople instead of reclaiming the Levant were driven by the machinations of Narses against what he saw as old rivals from his Mortal days.

His Elysium contains statutes stolen from the Hagia Sohpia itself depicting Michael, the evidence of that crime being openly gloated. The Malkavian admitted as much and that the conspiracy was with the assistance of the Romans no less!

Did those descended from the Dream seek their revenge upon Narses through these Mortals? I do not see how. Fabrizio Ulfila, Ventrue of Rome, probably aligned with Narses, and other Lasombra Elders are the Cainites I am aware of with any influence over the Church"...

Franza chimes in, "The Pope now resides in Avignon, not Rome".

Alexander shakes his head a slight look of irritation at being interrupted, "That matters not, no Cainite I am aware of has direct control over a Pope.

The Lasombra always scheme against one another and everyone else, perhaps his own Childer sought to depose and replace him? They have some sort of council of Elders whose goals are ever shifting.

The last set of enemies of Narses, that I can think of at any rate, would be the Cainite Heresy. A group that up until recently, Narses was the head of or at least one of the leaders of.

His... conversion as it were to Christianity at this Conclave could have upset his old allies. Though based on when he converted, the timing does not appear right. How could they have moved so quickly? What contacts would Cainite heretics have with Mortal Hunters?

I am sure there are other pieces of the puzzle I am not seeing..."

He pauses and contemplates, so very still, like a statue from a fallen city state of lost age of Greek power long waned, "That is my long winded response to your conjecture which I suppose does not confirm nor deny a... cleansing". He smiles as if pleased with the idea, you hope he imagines Paris and not Venice as he does so.

Franz speaks, "The Pope is a power hungry man, he seeks his own ambitions, his own territory, his own Holy Army united under God. In fact, with King Philip IV of France he has eviscerated the Templars, accusing them of dealing in dark practices. I am sure that is also why he moved away from Rome, to be closer to his new ally in France.

The sees the Doge's occupation of Ferrara as an impediment to his political ambitions, mainly because he supported the other side of Ferrara's political faction, Marquis Azzo the VIIs brothers.

The Doge actually is in the right here as the Marquis did name his heir to be his Grandson Folco to be his heir. Folco though is the Grandson from an illegitimate child of the Marquis, which is likely the claim that the Brothers are making to invalidate the succession".

Alessandro did not wish to gainsay the Elder, but in fact... he did know his herd's names, backgrounds and families.

Perhaps in time, he may not.

With this knowledge and these allowances you both have imparted, I shall venture forth and do my best to advance our goals.

I ask one favor.

Please erase the knowledge of your presence here, Lord Alexander. Not of you of this conversation. Just that you find sanctuary here.

There is a hotel... Alessandro describes there place.

Send a mortal there, twice daily... sunset and sunrise. I shall send a man as well and this is how we will communicate.

Only in dire need or to case of immediate danger to you, will I ever return here unannounced, Franz.

It is in a well heeled area. An excellent choice. I shall send one of my girls there, she will bring and send missives but be able to do no more. Her name is Esmerelda. Quite sharp, I have Ghouled her already so she will be absolutely trustworthy.

Very well, in a few days time, the Prince shall be fully back to his full health and then we will be ready to strike as needed though I would prefer if we left the fighting to mercenaries. There must be some group here that is for hire".

Alexander places a hand on your shoulder Alessandro, "I knew bringing you into the fold to be the right move. We must stick together, differences aside, we are of the same Blood. Noble. Wise. Measured.

the Streets of Venice to Cappelli Storage - Alessandro Khadaji

With a fresh set of clothes, albeit a bit long on your frame, Franz is rather tall, you find a boatman who paddles you to the Lido, tipping him for the favor. He nods and grins.

It is early in the evening and the air is cool, not cold, quite comfortable. After the events of the past few days, Mortals have ventured out of their homes to live life once more. The mood is somber on their faces but they persevere. This too shall pass and they know it. Though tougher times may be ahead with the excommunication.

You manage to see no one you know as you approach the docks warily where Cappelli storage is located. Business is still open as the hour is not particularly late. The gentleman inside of the office is a bit older, Giuseppe, must be one of Dominic's employees.

"Good evening sir, how can I help you?" The look on his face shows a bit of discomfort, not unusual when a Venetian sees a man who wears the visage of what the Church often defines as the enemy or the heretic. You were used to such looks when you were younger, lately, you have not dealt with many people you do not know directly so it is odd to see him clearly made uncomfortable by your mere presence. If only he knew what you really were!

Alessandro tries not to be too intimidating.

Buonasera, Giuseppe.

My name is Alessandro, a pleasure to meet you. I do hope you have been having a pleasant evening. At ease.

I was in the neighborhood, as you can imagine the Khadaji warehouse, a rather small affair, is nearby. I figured I'd stop by to check in.

Is everything in order? Hopefully the conflicts of late haven't affected you and yours. It is a shame what happens to our Venice.

Obviously, I wasn't born here but have been coming and living here for quite some time.

I do love it so.

"All that stuff was retrieved by the Knights several days ago so it's out of here, thank God! I asked Mr. Dominic not to store stuff for the Querini family again.

Well.. I mean now who knows right? Maybe the only one that can be trusted was sent away by the Doge to Ferrara. Marco in custody. Michele missing. The Father murdered. I bet it was to save the rest of the family, easy to blame a dead man for conspiracies right?"

He sighs, "Indeed, I am with the Doge. I do not wish to be in conflict with the Pope, but what business has he of the goings on of rulers? Does his role not only involve our spiritual guidance? God places our Kings and Princes in power for a reason! Who is the Pope even to question God?"

The Exit of Bion's Lair - (PC) Lorenzo, Ranerius, Michele, and Geoffroi (NPC) Lydia, Onfroi

The Lasombra, of course, took to their own havens via the shadow ways and Bernardo to the ground as only the Gangrel can, with the Artiste, having remained in her own Haven. Thus it was your small band and Bion himself, with the shadowy simulacrum of Narses in tow, that trekked through the streets of the city on foot, under cover of darkness and Obfuscate to Bion's safe haven.

It's close proximity to Elysium itself caused some anxiety as it was not the best time for a fight with these Hunters. Luckily, they were otherwise occupied and the small band was able to safely make it to the under the lagoon safety of the ancient Cappadocian's lair.

All of you rest uncomfortably in the watery recesses of his warren. You wake mark off 1 BP the next evening with no stakes in your hearts or torches in your faces so despite the less than ideal conditions, at least there was safety.

Bion is already awake whispering to his zombie as the rest of you begin to stir. "Greetings Fledglings. Tonight is the night we, well more you, begin to organize.

It is clear that the three Lasombra are displeased with my short term solution. They may spend their time politicking instead of focusing on the task at hand. That is good, for the one who acts first and best to aid us shall be the one we should put our support behind. Let them weed themselves out through machinations.

I leave you to your devices for the moment. Once you have gathered what you believe to be sufficient assistance, send Onfroi back to retrieve me. Then we can ascertain the best way to eliminate these Hunters and restore order to Venice once more. So long as they are able to operate with impunity, none of us shall be safe".

Onfroi leads you all out through the now familiar tunnel back to the lagoon, unfortunately, the one near Elysium. Before you all need to dive back under the water to exit he pauses. "I still believe we should have struck them fast and hard, but for me to do so alone was folly, and so here I am.

But if we are confronted again, the time to run is over, are we agreed?

Before we exit we should also decide, where to first? I say my brethren, though their reception of me is almost overtly hostile, they are the one Clan we know are actual residents in Venice".

Master Khadaji waves him off casually.

No apologies needed, Giuseppe. I probably look younger than you'd expect but older than I should. He chuckles candidly.

It's a good recommendation, please speak with Jaleel. Let him know you've discussed it with me.

I do find most people around the world quite similar in that they merely wish to fulfill their duties and work towards what ever reward they can to the betterment of their family and position.

All too often, they get caught up in the intrigues and conflicts of rulers . And, end up paying dearly for things not of their doing.

You are a good man, Giuseppe. We need more like you. I was wondering if a few dogs wouldn't help, this close to the water, maybe ratters. I'm rather fond of them.

Is there anything I can do for you or the others that work here? Don't be shy. Speak your mind.

This is how father did business, treating everyone with respect. Acknowledging their contributions and partnering with them, no matter their station at work or in life.

Life... Undeath.

Turning to the others, the former doctor states, "Narses is gone, and with him gone the veritable army of ghouls he had executing his day to day business will find themselves in need of new sponsors, should they wish to continue their extended existence. The former Prince had made use of shades from the afterlife controlled by the Giovanni to gather his information, perhaps those same shades can provide clarity on who and where these ghouls may be."

"As a side note, beyond the three that vie for power in Narses's absence, the Prince of Padua is one of Narses's Childer as well - and a former seneschal, do not be surprised to see this one make a play for Venice as well now that Narses is gone."

He stirs, and finds himself in..well, THIS place instead of his beloved inn. A frown crosses his features. Ranerius tucks it away and focuses. He is out of his preferred element. He stands to lose all he values. And his various attempts to make gains for his own minor ambitions seem blocked at every turn by obstinate elders, piddling politics, and a stubborn refusal by most to seek to work together. And all around them, beloved Venice aches.
He listens to Bion's commands, and contemplates them rather as guidance. The point about Lasombra is well made. They seem to thrive in politics as he thrives in music and hospitality.
Then they head out with Onfroi

Quote:

Onfroi leads you all out through the now familiar tunnel back to the lagoon, unfortunately, the one near Elysium. Before you all need to dive back under the water to exit he pauses. "I still believe we should have struck them fast and hard, but for me to do so alone was folly, and so here I am.

Quote:

"Is there any Lasombra that does not fancy him or herself as Prince or at least the power behind the Prince?" a chuckle, "But a fair point. The ghouls you speak of definitely interest , we will need their eyes and ears in this siege I suspect. Speaking of eyes and ears, I've a mortal contact in the guard." He considers Sirus Terzago "How deeply placed is he? I'm not sure in these fluid times. I can make an effort to find him." A nod to Onfroi "And I absolutely agree we should go to the Nosferatu first. They are now the second largest remaining clan in the city after all."

The other Nosferatu seen is Niccolo, or at least, that is the public face of the other Nosferatu in the city. Niccolo is the name that several Nosferatu give to hide their strength and true numbers.

My understanding from my Sire is that the spiritual leader of the Nosferatu, with Simon not available, is one of his Childer. One that never makes public appearances. His name is Alexander Danov.

If we wish to truly align with the local Nosferatu, we would need to speak to him".

He nods at the mention of the fourth Lasombra contender.

Lydia spits, "A fourth Lasombra! These Magisters are like vermin, always more in the shadows". Her expression turns dark, "Those spirits you speak of my master, to find them, we may need to go to the Mausoleum..." She lets the implication hang.

Onfroi nods at Michele's statements about Santo, "He did ask me if I had resources in Paris, which I do, contacts if not actual allies. Whether he went there...I know of a haven of his we could check.

If I remember correctly, Radek sired Michael to provide evidence of the identity of the Cainite who was feeding and leaving corpses around the city".

Michele and Lorenzo:
Onfroi is correct, Radek embraced Michael Santo to provide evidence that Fahdi was the one breaking the masquerade and leaving bodies about the city fully drained of blood.

Onfroi pauses watching Geoffroi to see if he will speak, he does not and Onfroi speaks once more, "An interesting angle these Ghouls, wouldn't the Lasombra be the ones to track them down? Narses was particular about his ghouls being tampered with. An interesting point though, prior to my own Embrace I was Ghouled to the Toreador Clan in the Courts of Paris for a century. It was nerve wracking once my natural life had... expired I suppose is the term. I knew that if I did not have Cainite blood, I would quickly pass on. At least that is what I was always told".

Ranerius:
In addition to trying to track down your contact, you believe you made contact with Narses agents at the Doge's victory celebration. Though the Doge's palace is not far from the Basilica...

Michele:
Cristiano Lintini, the Cainite the Nosferatu asked you to find, is another Childe of Simon. You made that deal with Ferdinand.
