THe battle raged, and vicious strikes continued. First Sigvald gave and received a vicious strike. Then Tibold staggered an orc with a shot to the neck, the bleeding orc held onto the witch in a death grip. Remis was clearly protecting the downed half-orc, and no orcs ventured into the light to attack. The dog and plant viciously injured another orc who barely kept his feet. The three orcs attacked the dog and caravan leader, as he was wearing a big red shirt that was covered in blood.

An orc archer erupts in flame again as a vial on him explodes.

It takes a moment to register the fight is over, but the crackle and snapping of nearby trees splitting from overheated sap boiling out as the newly minted forest fire begins in earnest snaps Tibold back to the present situation.

"Listen, everyone!" he shouts as he pulls a cloth from his many pockets and douses it with water. "Avoid inhaling the smoke as much as possible!" His voice becomes slightly muffled as he wraps the wet cloth across his nose and mouth.

Tibold encourages everyone to emulate him, and he rushes to his own wagon to make sure his horse and donkeys are as far from the fire as possible. Eyeing the forest fire, he hopes the wind stays low and prevents it from spreading or becoming the menace to all of them that he had seen on the frontier in his youth.

As things calm down slightly and the caravan takes stock of their situation, Tibold watches dispassionately through the haze of smoke from the blaze as the newly dead are added to the funeral. When Saoirse speaks to him for the first time, Tibold blinks surprised she even knew his name. There really hadn't been much socializing among the voluntolders on this trip.

" Hand it ov—" Tibold begins to say his voice a bit crackly. He clears his throat and starts over. He makes a show of pulling his damp cloth out of his mouth as if that was the cause of the wobble. "Uh, yeah. Just hand it to me, and I'll figure it out."

Tibold unstoppers the container and examine the color, consistency, and odor of the liquid contents.

Unless there's some reason he can't, Tibold just takes 20 on this since it doesn't really look like we're leaving in a hurry.

Why did it take someone pointing it out for me to do that? Remis asked himself as he sheathed his rapier. Remismun, you are smarter than that! He berated himself while ripping a strip of cloth from his shirt. He emptied some of his canteen onto the fabric then tied it around his face.

The others seemed to have the captured orc under control so Remis turned his attention to Brightberry. “I think you’re our best bet in keeping this fire from spreading. DO you think you could summon water in a way to create a bit of a perimeter around the brush that is burning and that which has not caught flame yet? Maybe we can keep the foliage saturated enough that it will not spread. Though, I did spot that separate path back just a bit. That might create enough of a gap between this thicket and the rest of the forest. Regardless, we should consider moving our wagons past the flames.”

The orcs are secured as the caravan prepares to move out. The forest will probably burn a while, and Jasper blames the orcs for making him set the forest ablaze. Remis leads an attempt to create a firebreak, but the caravan does not seem to want to stay and risk being cut off by the fire or attacked by more orcs. Tibold IDs the potion as a cure light wounds potion.

A careful watch is set that night as Malin explains they are going to push hard to make the fort by the next day. Luckily the night is uneventful and the path begins to head towards the Sellen River. The single gate to the fort is opened as your wagons enter an outpost with the a set of coins engraved on what appears to be a large lake. This appears to be a somewhat unofficial symbol with a link to both the church of Abadar and House Lebeda. This outpost of about thirty men under arms seems to be at an extremely high alert.

A large man wearing a helmet with a large white swan on it approaches your group as the wagons are secured and the horses are stabled.
"Orcs surround us and constantly harass us. You must stay inside the gates."

You realize you left two weeks ago, and Pharast is almost over. The nights are still chilly, but not uncomfortably so.

Some of the explanations in Malin's voice actually come from Emerald. Especially when it says: "That Emerald is the best number 2 a caravan leader could wish for. If something happens to me, follow her words as if they are my own."

Brightberry pays no heed to the dead orcs or humans, but seems positively morose at not being able to quench the forest fire. He does what he can in creating a water break, as Remis suggested, and leaves the rest of it to nature.

Brightberry gives Remis more positive interactions following this. A smile here or there. Listening to and responding to his comments. Jasper on the other hand, nothing but thorny glances. On the trip to the fort, everyone gets a Goodberry buyer Jasper. He claims he ran out, even though Remis got two.

"Can't say that I'd complain about that. We managed to survive an orc attack just comin' here." Saoirse replies as they prepare to enter the gate.

Such a shame that we were unable to insure that the flames did not spread, Remis thought as the caravan moved on.

“You did well, BB,” Remis said to Brightberry, “first the wagon and then the forest. You should be proud.”

Remis offered a knowing smile the first time he was given a second goodberry and split it between Ava and Wynston.

Arriving at the fort

Remis nodded in agreement with Saoirse and added “We thank you for the protection, ser,” before double checking that his horse was secured in the stable.

After a discovering a burned caravan, surviving an ambush, and one night to rest and recover spells, you hurried with your prisoners to the Fort on the Sellen River. It is 29 Pharast 4710 and the weather is getting warmer and warmer. The guard captain takes you to a large table in the Bloody Axe Inn, a two-story building with an entire second story dedicated to basic rooms as your prisoners are secured.

The warrior in his mid thirties spreads a map on a large table in the tavern, and shows you the route you took to skirt the border of Pitax and Mivon and arrive at this fort. He seems agitated and explains: "Brevoy is making some play for the Riverlands, and it has Mivoy and Pitax concerned. Our deals with the Merchant League of Mivoy has been profitable for both sides, but it appears the Merchant League is wavering in their support of our continued trade agreement. One of my spies infiltrated a meeting where Hanspur priests seemed to be advocating for plundering the trade routes rather than take smaller, steady profits. Although the Merchant League agreed to maintain the agreement, Houses of Mivoy that wanted to raid an occasional caravan were told to keep it to themselves, but make sure the tithe on the plunder made it to the Merchant League."

He draws a breath "So, our enemy includes orc warbands and now Mivoy mercenaries. We have been under siege conditions for weeks and have the vital resupply we need. We just need to hold on a little while longer."

If we wanna stall, how about we b~&$+@~& them into believing that times on their soide?

The Mercenary offers

So, here is what we could do, and smart people He looks at everyone
I think youll have oideas to make that betta. What if we pretend that we arent resupply but reinforcements? With no supplies, making your supply situation even worse? Makes it the cunning play for them to just wait and try starving us out.
He continues
So, we half bluff, display the banner of the orchestra, which I am a member off, beneath your own banner. We got a reputation as hard fighting, logoisticallly challenged and occassionally demon eating rowdies
He pauses

If I was a Mivon merc, I would be like "Ahahaha, ill just wait till s#*+ happens by itself and then pounce"
He grins

And then we can expand on this. We write some letters and shoot them to the besiegers, maybe use that for an Ambush, too.

Alternative is that we lead a short an sharp raid, could even support the other bluff. How many people other then me see in the dark here?

Orchestra. He's mentioned being in the orchestra a couple of times, like it's important. Isn't that a group of music players? Not very intimidating. I wonder what Sigvald plays?

Brightberry speaks up. "Do they not attack? That could make things easier. I could have the plants grab them, and our archers pick them off."

As the war council continues, there is an occasional crashing sound as a large rock lands withing the walls. "Damned Mivoy catapult, they will be closed to breaching the walls soon. I will have you hold here in the Broken Axe and we will make each building a strong point. If holding the walls becomes too much, my men will fall back to each individual building.
My orders put the safety of the caravan first. You must make the last trip to Willip which is here."

On the map Willip is just about 8km to the south. A scout comes in and whispers to the captain.
"There is Bloody Hand banner seen among the enemies, and they are definitely going to come tonight. If you like, we may can slip you out if you want to avoid the fighting and get to Willip."

Tibold motions to his fellow voluntolders to come closer and speaks quietly.

Not the Good Guys:
Uh, so call me selfish, but risking our lives here isn’t really getting us closer to that other 750, if you know what I’m saying.

He glances at the others a bit sheepishly and scratches the back of his head. “I still don’t quite understand how I got into this whole situation to begin with. Plucked out of a tavern on what? Somebody’s whim?

He lifts a hand palm up and shakes his head. “I’ll go with the flow, but…we’re not here to die. Just help somebody ‘prove a point’ about this little trade route. Don’t have any illusions we’ll be considered heroes if we bite the dust out here. The merchants will either just send another group of saps with promises of gold or figure out a different way to make their profits.

Tibold twiddles the top of a clay pot in one of his coat pockets as he watches the others’ expressions. “Just think about it before making any promises here. The man’s as good as said we can leave for our next destination before it starts raining orcs.

Brightberry continues to look up into each of the faces, finally grasping the situation.

They have been attacking and the wall is about to fall. They want us to hold up in this building and wait until we are attacked? What can I do in a building?

"I like the idea of not fighting. If we stay, the trip to Willip probably won't happen."

Meanwhile, Redleaf is peering out the window for invaders.

not the good guys:

We can have either a fight from a defensible positions for sure, or try to sneak out, likely resulting in another ambush later. There is a degree of merit in fighting and slugging it out.

Remis felt a knot forming in the pit of his stomach as the others considered leaving the fort to face its attackers alone.

Not the good guys:

"I would never consider myself a hero. And I am inclined to simply pack up and continue on out of self-preservation alone but," Remis glanced toward the door, "is it not likely that once they are done here, the attackers will follow us? Is this not a chance to provide ourselves with safe passage?"

Tibold shrugs. "If they're gunning for this fort, we may be well situated at our destination by the time the hordes come looking for anyone who got out. I don't think this fort is going to fall in a day. I'm sure they'll hold out for a week or so if the defenders don't just win the battle. This siege isn't about us. We walked into it, so coming after us may not be important to those orcs right now."

Remis wrote:
"Is this not a chance to provide ourselves with safe passage?"

Tibold looks thoughtful. "I don't know, sir. If we stay and fight with them, do you think they're going to have the man power to escort us or any desire to risk it? And what about the orc bands that escape into the woods and wilderness if the siege is broken? I think we'll have more than our fair share of ambushes no which way you split the potion on this one. I just think if this intelligence is credible, they have a siege coming, we might slip through. Just depends on whether they think there's a break in the ranks. I'm assuming he wouldn't offer us the choice to leave if he didn't think we couldn't make it. Otherwise I'm sure the merchants pay him to be smarter than that with their trade caravans."

The alchemist glances at Saoirse. "Any thoughts, Singer/Songwriter?"
