She steps forward, then halts and throws the axe to the ground in frustration. "BAH! Maybe you're right. They say I have a temper. And that I hold a grudge. Who wouldn't? It'll be easier to just go home with Sparkles and think on it. The no-good, incompetent, self-centered, arrogant, annoying, stuck-up scholar can live… for now."

"And lemme make it up to you. I appreciate you coming out for us and you seem like nice enough folks. Take this." She rummages around in her bag and hands you an alabaster wand with a clear crystal at the tip. A Wand of overflowing Life (3rd level).

Kas knew all too well how difficult this was as he speaks to her of his past, secluded, overworked and beaten constantly left him a bit detached from the world for a long time. You return to the deep gnome village where Irlah Kestiwhitt and Effeflinn Whyst wait anxiously. Eltha stares angrily at both Effeflinn and Kreighton but doesn’t attempt any further violence.

Irlah suggests an evening’s rest before journeying to the portal. She herself is still packing up her belongings to go back home.What do you say? one more night with the gnomes?

This will put you just under 48 hours; I imagine you left late morning a day and a half before

You can locate the portal easily. However… there's a problem. The open cavern in front of the portal is filled with dozens of bizarre creatures tearing each other apart, seemingly to reach the portal themselves. Horrific and alien noises ring out and echo back. The floor is slick with blood, and the air burns with acrid fumes.

The monsters are mostly holding each other at bay, but as you watch a you see spidery leg slipping through the portal. What the creature is is impossible to tell from your vantage point.

You need to get across the battlefield!

This is another skill challenge. Each of you must choose one method to get across the battlefield. You need to cross approximately 120 feet to get past the battlefield to the portal. Each of you can use a skill appropriate to your method, such as Acrobatics to avoid attacks, Athletics to shove combatants out of the way, Survival to find a path around the battlefield, or even a melee attack roll to fight through. The DC is 26. Spells and abilities may negate the need for check(s) altogether.

Kohl scares a group of Orvian trolls out of his way. The huge creatures stumble aside in fear as the mighty kobold passes. Orin dashes behind and bashed one out of the way with this shield.

Chulyin draws a sigil in the air with his staff and chants in Druidic. He slams the butt of his staff down on the ground, and a wide bridge erupts from the stone and passes over the milling creatures to come to a rest near the portal. "I should have told them I could do that before they started pushing their way through, should not have I?" he says to the wolf. The two of them hurry across the sky bridge. He waves Shaine and the other lost explorers to follow.

As you step into the Archives you are confronted with a scene of chaos! There are terrible creatures running amok; the Pathfinder Swords and Gorm are having a difficult time holding them off. It’s time to save your friends! You knew there would be trouble coming in, you can have reactions before your turn starts, and you have weapons drawn, etc.

There are two towering earth elementals surrounded by an aura of blade-sharp rocks. Spiked Earth — difficult terrain, 2d6 Piercing per square you move into, no save. Aura is marked on creatures and described in full in a spoiler at bottom of the init block. Please take note of that and roll your own damage.

The third creature looms above you, a slavering nightmare of teeth, eyes, and hairy spiderlike legs — its horrific appearance will be seared into your memories forever. Its lidless eyes cover all sides of its body; its joints make eerie clacking and popping sounds as it moves. You cannot help but imagine hearing that sinister sound in a deep dark cavern…

Effie and Shain come in behind you. The poet sings:

Kreighton and Effeflinn, already aided greatly by Chulyin's stone wall, will work on holding the portal while you deal with the creatures who’ve made it into the Grand Lodge.

The missing Pathfinders jump in behind you, grateful for Chulyin's stone skyway. Irlah shouts: We’ll help too! We owe it to the friends who saved us! She holds out her divine focus — Nivi’s dice! Plinteff nods and tightens the grip on his halberd. Aye. Eltha pats Sparkles, who runs off (terrifying some of the guards along the way). You’re damned right we will, Irlah.

Each round on initiative count 0, one NPC of the players’ choice performs one of the following actions. The NPCs aren’t affected by spells or effects from the PCs. The NPCs don’t provide flanking or block the PCs from moving to any squares.

* Eltha: Cast freedom of movement on a PC (can only be used once).
* Gorm: Make one opponent frightened 2.
* Irlah: Heal one PC for 4d8+32 Hit Points.
* Piltineff: Deal 3d8+10 piercing damage to one opponent.

Horrible Spider

The spider-thing skitters forward with blinding speed, and bites Kas!

The cleric feels fangs sink in around his neck. To his horror he's then dragged into the air and carried away — leaving a trail of blood on the floor. Improved grab and a special ability that lets it carry around creatures it has grabbed.

This is a Stone Mauler. They can Crumble when damaged, ropping into the earth without triggering reactions! The annoying ability needs to recharge.

DC 30 (Occultism) on Toothy Spider:
This is a Gogiteth, a chaotic evil aberration. They have a skittering assailt! The gogiteth Strides three times. Once per Stride, it can attempt a leg Strike against a creature in its reach at any point during the Stride; it must make each attack against a different creature, but it doesn’t apply its multiple attack penalty until after making all its Strikes. If any of the Strikes results in a critical failure, Skittering Assault ends.

They can skitter as a reaction. Skittering Reposition (move) Trigger A creature that starts its move outside the gogiteth’s reach moves into its reach. Effect The gogiteth moves 10 feet. This does not trigger reactions.

Spike Stones (aura, earth, primal, transmutation) 5 feet. Spikes of rock rise up from all stone surfaces in the emanation, creating difficult terrain. A creature moving in the terrain takes 2d6 piercing damage for each square of spikes it moves into (a Large or larger creature takes damage only once for each square it moves, even if its space covers multiple squares of spikes).

As the battle begins, Yendi lets out an uncharacteristically fierce battle cry to Demoralize #2 Intimidation to Demoralize as part of initiative: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (18) + 23 = 41

if #2's initial position was more than 30ft away, #1 is still in range

Yendi stands his ground in the growing rocky spikes and intones "Abominations that think you've found prey, realize now that you stand in the presence of something far greater than yourselves! My companions are no prey for simple spiders! The chains Kas carries so tirelessly will bear you to the ground!! These shards are nothing compared to the way Kohl's roar is destined to crack the Earth! You will see that Orin is more immovable than the walls that held you in Nivi's realm!
