Here is a Discussion thread, yay!

I've scratched PM Minotaur and create game thread off my list. This weekend will be: working on maps, PMing last player who has checked in, putting some basic stuff up in campaign info tab, and rereading everything (characters, existing threads).

Hopefully the reread will tell me if Minotaur planned on using Milestone or exp based leveling. I'm operating under the hope Minotaur will return and feel comfortable taking the game back, so want to try not to disrupt their original plan!

I've dropped the town stat block in the Campaign Info tab. Note that I left out Notable NPCs until you get to know the town better, and omitted Magic Items For Sale until you visit Locations with said items available.

I also put in a space for places and associated NPCs you've met. Their current attitude toward the characters is noted beside the NPC.

The town and her residents are actually fairly important characters in the story, and they took the time to provide a fair amount of detail to the DM (but not too much) listing 53 total locations and associated NPCs with those locations. Influencing them can provide bonuses such as discounts at shops and rumors (which may unlock side quests). It could also result in penalties if Diplomacy checks do not go well! Hostile NPCs won't attack anyone in the street, but may refuse to do business with them or work behind the scenes to slander the characters.

Sorry for hitting the fast-forward button and jumping right to the action, but I felt like y'all had been on ice a bit already and you will have plenty of time in the near future to get to know the town better!

Sorry I'm extra active right now, got off work early ahead of three day weekend and trying to take advantage, lol!

Maps are still coming, I hope everyone is okay using Roll20, it's just too useful for a variety of purposes for the GM.

Still rereading the characters themselves, but caught up on a lot of other things. Just for reference: I am on the east coast of the USA (central VA), -5 GMT, but work a late shift lately so I'm almost more like being on the west coast.

It doesn't look like Minotaur mentioned exp, so I'll stick with standard just in case (and because it makes side-quests more valuable). It's a lot easier to transition to milestone from standard than the other way around.

Minotaur also didn't talk about HPs on leveling, but for me I tell folks to roll, but if you come up with equal or less than HD then take half+1. So if you're D8 and roll a 3, you'd take 5. If you rolled a 6+ you'd take that result. I'll remind folks of that when you do level!

Okay, I'm done yammering!

Oops, forgot a minor thing, very minor but possibly useful RP wise. Everyone may attempt a DC 15 Sense Motive check after the noble woman offers the group the job investigating the collapse.

I will be adding a link to maps sometime over the next 24 hours, as well as a list of quests/side quests currently unlocked (some are similar to video game achievements, it's an odd approach, but kind of cool).

The Roll20 page is up. Right now it should be showing a map of the mound of rubble left behind by the tower collapse with a bunch of citizens gawking. I think that's everything on my to-do list for now!

I just created a Roll20 account. As someone who played exclusively on a physical table up to now: how can I find this game on Roll20?

The link that says "Roll20 Page" at the top of this (or any) thread for the game will take you to the game page on roll20. From there just click launch.

I didn't put tokens/avatars in the character slots in case folks wanted to use something different than what they use here, nut they should all be open to editing so you can upload if you want. Otherwise, I'll snip these avatars and upload them once you really need it.

Thank you. I found the link and accepted the invitation. But when I press "launch game" there is only a black screen. Shouldn't there be the map you already uploaded?

Guys, I'm very sorry, but I need a couple of days to get better. I caught a very bad cold, my head feels just like two balloons [cit.], I need some time to recovery. I'll try to write something Friday or Saturday, ok? Meanwhile I will get tested for COVID, hoping everything will be fine.

Good luck, Kivan. Hope you feel better soon.

I have the same problem with Roll20 as Bumolin.

It might have issues with whatever browser you're using. A lot of the map is currently blacked out, but IIRC the top left corner will be viewable, so you might just need to scroll over.

No worries, hope you feel better soon!

I'm probably at my slowest right in the middle of the week anyway. Easy hit and run posts I can typically get in, but more complex stuff like combat might be slower. Sometimes I can get posts in before I'm near a computer I can actually use Roll20 from effectively, so maps are occasionally slow to update. I try to remember to say that the map is or is not ready.

A general questions about the animal companion: would you prefer to describe how he reacts or should I do this myself. I experienced different DMs doing this in a different way over the years. Some played my companion 100% of the time like a NPCs based on my Handle Animal rolls, some let me play it as long as nothing went wrong.

More the latter. I view it as, "it is the player's class feature, they should have most of the control" but there are times when I might have them act funny or do something unexpected if the situation warrants it. More likely to be used when it knows something the PCs don't, like if it detects something with scent.

Sounds like the map may be wonky, since you're not in-in yet we have time to work it out, but I may not be able to really get under the hood until this weekend.

Dm Dockie, I have to admit to now being confused as to which floor we're currently on. A trap door is set in the floor against the northwest wall. <--- which trap door is this one? I assumed it as the iron trap door but is it the companion door that if we open we look down and see an iron trap door below it? Sorry, I'm visual and maps help me more than narration most times. Just trying get my bearings. Thanks!

No, it's weird, I (and the writers/editors) should have just emilinated the partial floor out, really. So the "top" is what is left of the second floor. It has a trapdoor, currently open, that leads down to a mostly collapsed first floor. This is where the partially buried kobold bodies are. That collapsed room has a trapdoor directly below the first, open trapdoor. That door is closed.

I'll be working on maps this weekend so I'll try and clarify there too.

I just realized that I wil probably not be posting much from saturday till monday evening. I will be taking part in a reenactment-event and because evidence of smartphones is sparse for the period, mine will be left in the car/tent for most of the time.

Have fun!

I think I figured out the map problem and it should be good now. Remind me to check the dynamic lighting settings if pages give us trouble in he future!

M Half-elf Cleric (Devout Pilgrim) of Erastil 2, AC:16, 0/4 channels used

Hmmm. Still just a black screen for me. Do have the player view frame on the right map? Did you polygon out the revealed area of the map? The fact it's all black makes me think it is a reveal issue.

Hmm. Looks like a legacy setting may have still been on despite dynamic lighting clicked off. They may be the case. It's a fairly large map, too, so it may just be slow to resolve. Hopefully it was that other check button I just unchecked though. These pages were originally created a while back, so old Roll20 features/settings conflicting with new ones is likely the issue.

Hey y'all, sorry for the prolonged silence. I still feel very shitty, I don't really have the strength to put into PbP. I'm sorry, but for now I have to pause all my games on the forum. Feel free to either kick me or bot me, either is fine. Tomorrow I'll finally get tested for COVID and I'll know what to do for this illness. Thank you for your understanding.

I will bot for now, and I tend to be pretty open about letting a player rejoin a game, so take your time and heal up, don't sweat it here!

If you're not back when the tower is explored, we might assume for a bit Kuvan is taking care of some personal business or recovering from illness/injury to explain his absence. But again, I'm always willing to work folks back in, especially original cast.

Map looks good. How do you want to handle initiative, GM?

Bumolin wrote:

So it's not just me who can't find a way to put his icon on the map?

@Bumolin: Once you launch the game on Roll20, you'll have the map up. In the top right hand corner, there's some symbols - go to the second one that looks like written paper(journal) and click it. At top, you'll see a list of characters/PC and some open slots. You can click on one of the open slots and edit the info there - adding your character name and your character pic. Save and you're set to go. I think there might be a problem with the privacy settings on the remaining open slots at the moment.

@DM Dickie: When I added my character to one of the open slots, it allowed me to add Thorfinn's as well. However, all the other open slots don't have the option to edit. Is that something you need to open up regarding privacy settings, please?

In regards to initiative it typcially depends on how complex an encounter is. The more moving parts, the more likely I am to break it into individual rolls. Typically, I will roll for players in those circumstances just to avoid posting and resolution delays, but if it's something like a player planned ambush or there are other reason why a delay might be fine, then I'll ask for rolls from the players.

If it's really a simple situation, like this, I will usually go with team style "you vs them" and allow the PCs first action (unless it's a surprise round thing, etc.) again, mostly to keep things moving.

I know that's a little weirdly inconsistent, it's almost more of a 'feel thing' in terms of pace than anything specific.

I can check the privacy settings, but I'm working right now to make sure everything is updated!

Okay, map is fixed, hopefully 100%. This includes privacy settings and adding the avatars to the map. You can adjust yourselves to where you'd like before taking your actions, I just dropped everyone in a spot near that door because everyone had gathered up to talk it out. I did move Thorfinn per his post.

I've got a spot for Abon on Roll20, right now he is on the map with a generic dire boar icon, lol.

One last thing, I'm leaving Kuvon off the map. Since you just started, we are going to assume he's watching the exit for now, so I'll bot him if necessary, but he can be off-stage for now. If he is able to return, we will find a reason why he climbs down and catches up to everyone.

Hi y'all, I'm feeling slightly better, and should be able to resume my duties as PC and GM toward the end of the week, I hope. Sorry again for all the troubles I've caused you, and thank you for your understanding.

Hi y'all, I should be able to return to the tables after this weekend. I hope you won't mind having me with you again, I know I've been sick for a very long time (I still don't feel completely fine, hopefully next week will be better). In any case I'll try to catch up and post on Monday, have a nice weekend y'all!

Don't sweat it at all, you only missed a tiny scuffle that was more about working out the kinks on the maps than anything else. Keep on feeling better!

I just realized that I'm posting comparatively often. It's probably because it is my only PBP-game up to now, while most of you have different games running, some even as GM, and therefore other responsibilities when they have time to post something.
Only wanted to ask: should I slow down a bit and wait more often till others have taken their turn?

Folks have different posting rates, heck even my rates vary wildly depending on RL stuff going on, lol. IMO, Outside of combat or situations where time needs to be tracked closely, it usually doesn't matter too much and can sometimes be helpful from a DM perspective because it can mean RP/dialog moving at a good pace. But that's just my $.02 from my perspective on this side of the DM screen.

Male Human UBarbarian 2| AC 16 T 12 FF 14 | HP 15/27 | F +6 R +2 W +1 | Init +4| Perc +7|SM +1

Every game works better/goes faster with at least one pusher--someone who posts often and ideally gives other characters cues. For example, this party comes to a door. Bumolin posts first, with something like "The dwarf listens at the door, then looks over at Cordia. 'Want to check it out, too?'" You not only put up a post, but you make a space for another player to do something.

That said, it can backfire a bit sometimes; I know if I'm checking the boards on my phone from work* and I see fifteen unread posts on a game thread, I'm not even going to look at them until I have some uninterrupted time. There's something kind of intimidating about that, even though I know from experience that it's usually going to be a lot of cool RP and not much plot advancement. (Actually, even then--cool RP is not something to speed-read.)

*If my boss is reading this for some reason, don't worry--I never ever do this. Really. Hey, why is my nose getting bigger?

male Dwarf Druid (Boar Shaman)/ Lvl2| CMB +3/ CMD 14| AC 15/ touch 11/ flat-footed 14| hp 12/24| Fort 6/ Ref 1/ Will 6| Init 1/ Darkvision/ Perception: +7

Thank you for the clarification. I'll keep that in mind. I was just a bit unsure about the etiquette here. And I know what you mean, Thorfinn: if it's too much to read during a bathroom-break, it will usually have to wait.

Sincere apologies for my lack of presence on the board. I developed a severe eye infection in my left eye last week that grew worse and I had to go into hospital. I'm back home now, but with an eye patch, on bed rest. So, being in front of a comp for any length of time isn't the best for me. I'll be back to usual posting from Monday 27th (hopefully sans eye patch). GM, please bot Cordia where/when necessary for the remainder of this week. Thanks kindly.

Lol, I figured this would be the same message as the discussion post for my Shattered Star game. My response bears repeating though: take your time to heal up, and hope you feel better soon!

As for me, I'll try and get an update in tonight after work, but my wife had dental surgery today so a little distracted. I can probably do the text during lunch, actually, we will see how it goes, lol.

Thanks, DM and Bumolin.

Complications with my eye situation. Looks like I'll be seeing an ophthalmologist for possible surgery on my left eyelid. Sorry I've been MIA, but I'm trying to limit my exposure on the comp and trying to rest up. I hope to be back to some kind of regular posting possibly around my Sunday (your Saturday) until I hear whether I need to get the surgery. I'll let you guys know more once I know. Thanks for your understanding and patience.

No internet (lots of rain can do this) and now I have the worst ever flu (thanks to hubby) on top of my eye situation. This is turning into a bad comedy. A little copypasta, but bears repeating for all players at any of my tables:
