Kvit nods satisfied as the second shadow is torn to shreds. "Good enough. Though these things seem to have left this thief alone. Either they were working for him or he is powerful enough they've left him alone. Be careful."

Then he raises his voice. "Just in case he tries to escape I'll block the way!" He points to the path leading up to the cave entrance and a sheer vertical slab of stone appears to block the way.

Kka lowers her sword. She'd been about to give shadow creature a few more slashes for good measure, but Kvit takes care of the killing blow. "Thaat's two more of the living dead we can add to our taally sheet." She then looks over to where Carman disappeared and wanders in that direction slowly, dragging her shortsword behind her along the ground for good measure. "<Screeeeeeeech>" The sound it produces in the slient cave is like nails on a chalkboard. "Come out, come out wherever you are. We know its you baack there, Caarman Raanjaani. I'd watch that show!

Fuin leans in toward Kka and mutters quietly, "Maybe mention how disappointed his ancestor would be in him. A hero's sword being hidden away in a dank cave when it could be used to save the town, or something. I dunno, I just get the feeling he's big on civic pride. Couldn't hurt."

I'd roll to aid but uh. I'd need a natural 19 XD

Is this a meme around your parts? I feel like it's appropriate.

A buff-looking guy appears from around the corner, his longsword in one hand, light hammer in the other. "Whaddaya want? It's my sword. It's got my family name on it and everything. Stupid librarians just don't want to give it back because it's 'historical' or something. I don't care, with that sword I won't be the laughing stock of the town anymore. And now they sent a hit squad after my ass. Should've gone to Absalom when I had the chance."

Any chance for a Heal spell from Cherry? I don't think Kka can take another hit and remain standing.

When Lough's rather ham-fisted attempt to talk Carman down fails, Kka is about to try and patch things up when Carman calls her a hatchling! The nerve! Her head snaps to face the blacksmith and her beady red eyes almost burn in her head as she prepares a retort that would have left a scorched crater of the man's brain. Lough reacts faster for once, and sends a rather more physical missile at Carman.

Noticing that Lough's attack meant business, Kka pauses. "Uh, we may waant to keep him alive guys. It may not look so good if we kill off the town blaacksmith and Roseguaard descendant."

I know that spells can't be made non-lethal, but how about we just knock him unconscious with nonlethal melee attacks, even if it does cost us a -2 to hit. I think it would look better if we dragged him back to town for punishment.

On a totally unrelated note, if we do accidently send him to Dying, any chance that Cherry can Stabilize him before he dies permanently?

Kka's about to launch herself at the man when a cage drops on him out of nowhere. "Whaat the f...? Is this your doing, Kvit?" Seeing that there's space for her to stick her shortsword through the bars, she runs around behind the cage and pokes him twice, lightly with her shortword.

Unfortunately, the cage removes the opportunity to catch Carman flat-footed. Thanks, Kvit! :)

He taps against the cage with his hammer. "Not like I can stop you, heh. But what are you gonna do with me? Gonna bring me back to Otari and throw me in jail? Or do you keep me locked in here forever to rot? You good guys won't kill a person who surrendered, right?"

When Carman capitulates and stops fighting, Kka relaxes. She'd had many dealings with the blacksmith in the past, mainly selling him her loot or having him transfer runes for her, and though they'd never been particularly friendly, at least they'd had a good professional relationship. She had not been looking forward to taking the poor guy out, but if saving the town from destruction at the hands of Belcorra required some collateral damage, then so be it.

Kka replies, "<Ark!> I've never really thought of myself as one of the good guys, but after going through the Vaults, I look like a friggin' angel by comparison to what we've run into down there." She thinks things over. What choice did they really have here? Not a whole lot. Keeping him locked up down here wasn't sustainable, and killing him seemed... inefficient. After all, a town without a blacksmith and fence for looted weaponry was going to be inconvenient. So they didn't really have a choice; they'd have to drag him back into town and let the legal system, what there was of it, take care of him. After all, they'd come for the sword, everything else was someone else's problem.

"Naah, we're not going to kill you. I think we'll go with option number one and draag your sorry butt baack to town to face the music. As for the sword, we're only going to borrow it for a while and then bring it right back, so if you do ever figure out how to get your haands on it legally, it'll be waiting for you."

"Ergh, I got all beaten up because you want to borrow it? Just my luck," he says as he pulls off his clothes without any shame. "If I'd waited a week, none of this would have happened."

As for loot, there's four light hammers, a +1 studded leather armour, thieves' tools, and 110 gp. And, of course, Vol Rajani's longsword.

As you comb through the cave, it's clear Carman left with only his essentials. He was carrying a spare set of clothes, (presumably) all his money, and some rations for the way to Absalom. Moreover, you find a secret door into the mountain. The mechanism seems to be blocked from the other side, though.

Fuin scratches his head through his hood as he stares at the secret door. "I bet there's a story behind that," he mutters. The urge to break it down and go traipsing off on a new adventure is strong, but he does manage to remember there's a town to save. "Some other time, maybe." He sighs longingly before taking up a position behind Carman so he doesn't try bolting as they travel.

"And nobody was gonna kill you, mac. Well--Lough might've. Believe it or not, we really do need the sword to save the town. I thought maybe that's something you'd care about. Maybe I overestimated you." He sounds genuinely disappointed, but maybe not so much in Carman as he is in himself.

Sorry @Kka, my intention was to short-circuit the combat and get him to surrender, since it seemed like we might've jumped the gun there.

@GM Kwinten Are there any openings or holes around the door? Like a rat sized one?

"No, I wouldn't bother putting you in a cage if I was just going to let these guys murder you. Like they said, we're only borrowing it. And if you really were interested in your ancestor's legacy, stealing it is likely not the way to go."

Kvit yawns before continuing "Listen, I will let you out right now if you promise to cooperate." If he agrees, Kvit will dismiss the cage illusion. The rock blocking the exit is still there.

Side note/question: I don't think we actually have permission to borrow it yet, do we? I think we were tasked with retrieving it.

I think we're done here, correct? Imma wrap things up and fast-forward a bit.

Carman does not struggle as you take him back to Otari. He's thrown in jail where he'll spend a few months for arson and theft. Slides Loot sheet

Seems like there's no need for some downtime. So let's continue!

You enjoy the rest of your day, then reconvene the next day for the next floor of the lighthouse.

Spells are refreshed!

With all the icons in your possession, you feel power radiating from them. Not power in the sense that they're going to blow up, but the self-assured confidence of a group of friends reunited after a long time apart. Perhaps such a friendship is starting to develop between the five of you as well?

You go down the several stairways and through the old levels you've cleared before. Not much seems to have changed, but then again, it's only been a few days since you cleared some of those levels. The walk through them almost becomes meditative at this point, where you remember what you did in each room and how you've grown since then.

Finally, you stand before the ectoplasmic wall on the fourth level. The hallway to it is festooned with remains of Belcorra's defeated enemies. Their hatred for her is being sapped and turned into fuel for the barrier. But as soon as you place the icons on the shrine to Nhimbaloth, the Roseguard's reassuring presence quiets the remnants of the fallen heroes, reassuring them that this time you will succeed. You feel a spiritual sigh as the tortured souls go to their final resting place and the wall fades out of existence. The way down is clear!

You go down the stairs and you feel a difference in the air. The smell of diseased flesh and stale chemicals burns into your nostrils. Also, as soon as the barrier is gone, you hear the sound of hooting, hollering, and generally incomprehensible screaming coming from down the stairs. Finally, at the end of the stairs, you're greeted by THIS!

A crumbling staircase leads to a cracked and badly stained mosaic tile floor. To the south, a walkway encircles a round, gaping pit, leading to a spiral stairway that clings to the edge of the pit. A twisted iron banister follows the edge of the walkway and stairs. The acrid smell of chemicals and rot,
with just a tinge of sulfur, wafts from the pit’s darkness. Strange moaning echoes up the shaft.

You've seen these creatures before. The slug-things are called grothluts, one of them was the morlock king's pet. You remember that they can spew acid with splash and that they explode upon death, in quite a big area too. They emit moans that can wrench your gut in an unpleasant way and become sickened. The flesh-heap was more recent, in the third level's subterranean pool. It's a gibbering mouther, and it can also spew acid, engulf people, and it makes a horrible gibbering sound with all its mouths that can confuse people. Oh, and if you deal slashing damage, it grows teeth from that wound to bite you as a reaction. Bludgeoning it to death seemed extra effective.

I'm sorry, Fuìn. :(

Cherry Berry creates a mystical link between themselves and Kka, sharing their vitality with each other. Lough moves forward and pummels the Mouther. It hurts a lot. Fuìn tries to put the slug into the stairwell, but fails.

The gibbering mouther opens up several mouths and starts yelling various things in different volumes, tones and intelligibility. You think one is yelling an actually decent cake recipe, for some reason.

I'll assume that Kka's successful Will save vs DC 19 from her last post takes care of the first of the required saves.

Kka is a little surprised to see the grothlut tumble over the edge so easily. She guesses that Fuìn must have pushed it off-balance enough for her to finish the job. She listens to it fall and is disappointed not to hear a large explosion when it hits the bottom. She shrugs. "Looks like the fall waasn't enough to finish it off."

And that's when the other grothlut starts moaning and wailing. "Not this again." She tries to cover her ears against the sound...

Since Blue went over the edge, I assume that Kka's last action was to put up her Shield spell.

So much for my plan to push the last grothlut into the pit to join its friend.

Kka sees Fuìn preparing to launch a killing blow against the remaining grothlut and time seems to slow as she opens her beak to screech a silent, "Nooooooooo..." But it's too late. His hammer slams into the creature.

As the light goes out in its eyes and it begins to swell, Kka turns her back and braces for the...

"<BOOM!>"

Basic? Fortitude Save vs DC 19: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

She can feel the creature's organs, blood and bile slam against her back but her backpack takes the brunt of the acid damage leaving her relatively unscathed.

Was that a basic Fort save for the damage? Doesn't look like it. If so, she takes 5 hp of damage but avoids the Sickened condition.

Kka looks up to see everyone coated in grothlut digestive juices and meaty bits and scrunches her face in disgust. She'd really hoped they'd seen the last of these creatures after taking out Screechy a few levels up.

Just as she figuratively pats herself on the back for avoiding the worst of the grothlut explosion, she feels the hot breath of many mouths behind her. She snaps her head around and sees the gibbering mouther open one particularly large orifice and launch itself at her...

Good thing Reflex is her best save.

Reflex Save vs DC 22: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33

...almost without thinking, her body throws itself out of the path of the gaping maw and it chomps down on empty air. "Holy sh... aarenrae! Thaat was close."

Is it my imagination or did the mouther take 5 more hp of damage than Fuìn inflicted? I went back to our previous fight with one of these gibbering mouthers and Kvit stated that they were weak (5) to bludgeoning damage and got an AoO against you for inflicting any slashing damage. Oh, and All-around vision means no flanking.

Knowing that flanking these creatures was useless, Kka tries to confuse it by stomping down with her hooves along the edge of its body as she skirts around it, then starts what could well be a long butchering process. As she's about to slash at the creature, she remembers the last time they ran into one of these and changes her attacks to more of a stabbing motion. "Ugh! I don't think I'm going to enjoy this."

Yes, they're weak 5 to bludgeoning, so Fuìn did 5 more with his attack (and Lough, for that matter).
Also, yeah, it's not a basic save because there's a rider attached. Basic saves just deal damage.

Lough resists the call of the beast this time, then pounds it twice, bruising its spongy body severely. He holds the mouther in place, which lets Kvit crit with his spell! Then, Kka crits and the beast stops yammering.
