Early in the morning, just before the sun is up and the sky is slowly shifting it's shade of blue, the ground is muddy and smell of rain lingers - the aftermath of last night's stormy weather - but nevertheless Gunda "Jakoby" Kolkind rises from her makeshift hut, and whistles into the trees for her eagle companion - "Ro" - to join her for her morning routine.

Having collected different herbs across the frozen tundras of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, en route across the eastern Saga Lands headed for the northwestern tip of the aptly named Broken Lands, she minces the collected buds with her fingers, and licking a dried bruorsivi pine leaf, twists the stack into a finely blended skinny roll. "Ya'd need lips for this, boy" scolding her onlooking feathered friend and life companion, as he watches with his typical sideways rotated neck, and makes a gentle screeching sound of affection, to which the elder Ulfen woman responds by curling her nose into a playful smile "Still got quite a ways to go, doncha know"

Climbing up the trunk now, the bird closes the vertical distance with but two or three flaps of his long and powerful wings, while the ranger perches upon a sturdy branch providing a 270 degree view of the next several hundred or so miles, and in the distance, Hillcross, which incidentally, the team intend to circumvent altogether, for no other reason than Jakoby knows a better route, and being fully capable of hunting and foraging without so much as losing a precious hour of cherished daylight, renders the amenities such a settlement might offer redundant. Striking a spark with her flint and steel, Jakoby intakes a long draw, and is soon lost in thought, which after a few moments, she seems to interrupt herself from "One of their own went missing - something about an old masked drunk dallying with some shadow demon" briefing her companion once again, adding "Dark times, these. Got half a mind to just retire here" she looks at Ro who squaks in agreement, and reaches her hand back to clutch the familiar grip of her longbow, and smiles again "I concur old friend: Now just what fun would that be!?"

Hoping down from the tree, the duo swiftly begin their descent down the north to south range jutting out from the Tusk Mountains, the only trace left of their passage through the wilds a trail of sweet smelling smoke...

A dazzling array of colors explodes from nowhere, and as the light fades, a bespectacled Thuvian woman stands.

"Where the abyss ..." she mutters to herself. She squints as she looks around. Blinded by colors, she's unsure whether it's night or day.

Hopefully, she's still on Golarion. The Maze of the Open Road could easily have dumped her on Castrovel ... or in the ocean (again). She brings out an elixir of darkvision, quaffing it before realizing it's not dark around her.

Quinoline prepares two greater elixirs of darkvision every day, and uses one to give herself darkvision for 24 hours - anyone without darkvision is welcome to claim the second.

As her sight slowly returns, she draws out a thick notebook, jotting down clues to her position - the sidereal time and the height of the sun in the sky.

slide 4 Several things were clear - the date/time and Skyreach which as a veteran pathfinder agent you are aware that this is within the heart of the Grand Lodge.

Each of you arrive at your chosen time before sunset. With largely clear skies and a light breeze bristling the nearby trees, activity within the lodge begins to dwindle. Upon entering skyreach your summons are requested and then each of you are directed to the top of an observation tower where you'll meet the rest of your fellow agents. While you wait, you have a few minutes to socialize over the impressive view of Absalom, just before sunset.

A very thin and frail looking goblin, completely covered and bird skulls and feathers climbs to the top of the tower. With each step you can hear the hollow rattle of the bones clicking against each other like some sort of dubious windchime. Each is followed by a more dense thud as a staff adorned with much larger skull of a beaked tengu, though not nearly fully grown that he found lying about rests atop, taps the ground as support.

The goblin gets to the top of the tower first and immediately goes to the nearest edge without a safety railing and sits down to overlook the city. He kicks his feet back and forth as he waits for others to arrive, the only noise to break the silence is the unnatural growling from his stomach as it pains in hunger.

Quinoline looks at the "sun" again and realizes it was an everburning torch hanging on the wall. She mutters something impolite-sounding in Osiriani, and furiously scribbes something out of her notebook.

She tosses Zac a darkvision elixir and gives him an elbow bump.

"Quinoline Silicate," she introduces herself. She climbs up to the observation tower and greets Greezgux in fluent Goblin.

...with a intricately carved pipe in mouth, an Ulfen woman, perhaps as old as your grandmother but with the physical vitality of your mother - or even your sister - steps from around the other side of the tower, and nods at Ro, whistling.

The bird bats the dead rodent over towards the goblin with it's head, which lands next to him "He brings a gift - if you're not hungry now, we'll salt it, save it for later - with the right spices, it'll make a fine jerky that can retain over a long trip, which I'm guessing, we are to embark upon from here!"

The ranger wears a heavy backpack but no armor save for a pair of brass bracers around her wrists, and is covered with a cloak made out of fur that crests her head with that of a coyote. A finely crafted katana hangs from her side, and a beautifully decorated bow is slung across her back. Though her eyes are reddened, her balance on this high tower is confident, and she quenches her dry mouth with a swig of water from a skin at her side. Stepping forward, she bows before the three adventurers before her "I'm Jakoby, this is Ro, pleasure to meet you all" stuffing her pipe with a fresh fingerpinch of sticky herbs, she cherries another bowl and gestures to pass it around, attempting to answer the question "Your summons should have read 'the nine' - rumor is one them has gone missing - either kidnapped by, or in collusion with, a dark force, the exact details of which I am unclear. But I can tell you this much: My gut tells me the road before us is long and dangerous, for the ancient evil awoken in the lands to the north stirs, which I assume, we are called her to try and put it back to rest."

Perhaps her words draw a gasp, perhaps not, but either way Jakoby looks to lighten the mood "But doncha despair, no - you look to be a stalwart group of adventurers, and I can assure you that I have no wish to journey to the halls of my ancestors anytime soon!" she smiles warmly here, crouching low, relaxed "I think we await our fifth yet" and with that she slips into silent thought once more, and smiles, as if some thought amuses her, chuckling barely under her smoky breath.

The turn to the room’s center in unison as a ninth individual—Eliza Petulengro, the only unmasked member of the mysterious Decemvirate—enters and closes the door behind her. She quickly turns to address the gathering.

Looking directly at Quinoline, "Glad to see you so soon. Fortunately we didn't need to track you down through the Almas Glassblowers' Guild as time is crucial."

Eliza turns to Jakoby and Ro before continuing, “Pathfinders, we have an emergency on our hands. Sapphire, a member of our leadership, has been possessed by an ancient and wholly evil spirit. Between this spirit’s fiendish magic and Sapphire’s subsumed knowledge and guile, we are struggling to get out ahead of whatever destruction this foul entity is concocting. She begins scanning the rest of the group, "What we do know is that the spirit is that of a cyclops demoniac who intended to summon the demon lord of storms, Urxehl, into our world.”

Another member of the Decemvirate wearing a mask fitted with stag-like antlers speaks. “The summoning requires a rare ritual. We do not know how to counteract such unusual spellcraft, but we have an ally who does. Dolok Darkfur, the manifested god of the Farheaven Clan from old Sarkoris, should be able to assist us. Through Dolok and the god caller Nelket, the Farheavens connect to traditions of calling, binding, and communicating with extraplanar forces.”

Eliza Petulengro pauses for a moment and then speaks again while looking directly at each one of you in turn. “You are among our most experienced Pathfinder agents following our Society’s recent losses. We need you to convince Dolok Darkfur and Godcaller Nelket of the Farheaven Clan to help us rescue Sapphire and put a stop to this spirit’s machinations. We can teleport you near to the Farheaven settlement, where I’m confident you’ll be warmly received. The Society has come to the Farheaven’s aid several times in the past few years, so you should be able to convince them to return the favor. This mission is time-sensitive, and the integrity of the Decemvirate, if not the safety of the world, depends on your success. Are you ready?”

If you have any questions, now is the time to ask.

Urxehl’s faithful include storm druids
and cursed oracles, who both commonly wield fire and
weather magic.
Success (DC 20):
Urxehl is the demon lord of storms and natural
disasters. He is widely hailed as the father of trolls,
although legends say that he despises the trolls that
worship him.
Crit Fail:
As befitting Urxehl’s
status as a demon lord, his minions
often use negative energy to destroy
their foes.

Jakoby manages to get out ""He brings a gift - if you're not hungry now..." by the time she realizes the dead rat is gone, hearing the spooky goblin's burp "...Aye! Mighty hearty appetite for a little-un, don't we have now!?" a little surprised but ultimately happy the gift was received.

She turns to Astrid here "Laumuspil eins og tunglið í þessum þunga pósti? Ég verð að sjá það sjálfur!" teasing her here, guessing at her well-developed sense of humor, and perhaps starting an exchange of playfully smart-assed remarks enough to last the journey ahead.

Translation (Skaldi):

Stealth like the moon in this heavy mail? I have to see it for myself!

Now to Quinoline "I think I remember you - my have you grown!" her reddened eyes coming into focus now, exhibiting recognition of face and phenotype "Might have to dip into this Water of Warlock's Barrow, if'n we're lucky, no!?" holding out a small vial of liquid that glows. Finally turning to Zac, Jakoby just nods "Stalwart group indeed" repeating to herself before falling back into silent thought as the Nine enter...

Having communed briefly, Jakoby ponders the significance of Dolok's and Nelket's ritual, and her first feeling, which she keeps to herself, is that it is a pity to circumvent what would otherwise be a marvelous journey to the Farheaven Clan in Old Sarkoris via teleportation. Instead she says "Of course we'll dew it!" to Eliza Petulengro, then "I have the same question as Greezgux. And also, what standing does the Society have with Dolok and Nelket - you say there is a precedence of an exchange of favors - is there a solid chance they might turn down the request? Perhaps a reason which, like hiding one's face, is being withheld from this briefing?" the ranger takes a long pull from her pipe, looking at the Stag Antler Decemvirate Member while she does so, with admittedly more than a hint of antagonism, unable to quash her proclivity for being up front and direct, especially when it's her fat that hangs over the fire...

For Jakoby, the trip is surprisingly sobering, the view of the sprawling metropolis suddenly replaced with that of the tranched earthworks.

Pure instinct has the ranger reaching for her longbow, which she points down to reply "Nelket you must be. Seems the favor will be reciprocal. At once, yes, lead the way" almost forgetting "Jakoby. And my hunting companion Ro. Best tracking duo this side of the Inner Sea" boasting a little here "In the company of a fine collection of warriors. Doncha worry!"

Already striding in the direction her contact seems to indicate!

"We will be momentarily!" Nelket exclaims, "Dolok Darkfur and several Sarkorian druids began a ritual to help restore the land scorched by demons o f the Worldwound, but it seems the ritual has triggered a backlash from the dormant evil in the forest! We're preparing to repel a siege while Dolok completes the ritual."

Astrid wrote:
"Of course we'll help. What's happening?"

"Latent Evils left over from the Worldwound are setting up to attack. Given where we are, I'm guessing they are minions of Flauros, the demon lord of fire. We're currently in the the Forest of Soldiers, or at least that's what we called it before we fled Sarkoris. Servants of Flauros burned it a hundred times over with Abyssal fire. Now people call it the Forest of Embers. This is where Dolok decided we would rebuild our legacy, starting by bringing the forest back to life. We must protect him while he completes the ritual!"

Nelket pauses and turns to the group, "Here, take these" she says as she reaches into your satchel and pulls out several multihued feathers. "These feathers are straight from Dolok Darkfur's own plumage. They can be used to secure the camp's perimeter by planting them." Nelket goes on to say that by planting them grow a defensive tree, and depending on how deep the feather was buried will influence the tree's color. She also tells the group that the feather can be restored as long as the Dolok tree isn't completely destroyed.

Nelket directs you to the camp's western front. A churning current of primal water, conjured by Dolok Darkfur’s ongoing ritual, rushes along a crooked trench at the edge of the Farheaven encampment. Sapling trees and fragile underbrush bloom gradually but visibly within the borders of the mystical river, breaking the blasted earth with spots of green and the faint creak of growing stems and trunks. In stark contrast, the older trees beyond the river stretch their splintered, ashen branches like flayed fingers toward a soot-choked sky. Any plants rejuvenated by their proximity to the water continuously burst into flame like embers newly doused with oil.

Nelket asks you to protect the two trails leading eastward towards camp, and to also protect the 15ft deep well that leads to a tunnel and stretches deep into the camp.

Dolok Trees handout on slide 8. Map on slide 9. Terrain/environment details added on slide 10 (rather than me paste them into every initiative update)

Terrain:

  • Each square of undergrowth is difficult terrain that provides standard cover and grants the concealed condition to creatures within. If an undergrowth square has been damaged by fire, it will instead provide lesser cover and will not grant concealed condition.
  • The River is 5 feet deep and flows south. Swimming in the flowing water requires a DC 15 athletics check. The river is difficult terrain for creatures swimming against the current. Ending your turn in the water moves you 10 feet in the current's direction. This is forced movement.
  • There is a waterfall at the south end of the map. At the end of the waterfall is calm water where there would not be forced movement for ending your turn in the water. The land adjacent to the calm water is difficult terrain, due to being muddy and sloped.

    Environment:

  • The entire battlefield is in darkness with the exception of squares with fire. This is due to plumes of smoke blocking the night sky
  • The trees on the western side of the river are caught between the renewing energy of Dolok's ritual and the destructive power of Flauros's influence, trapped in a perpetual state of burning.
  • Each square of fire is difficult terrain and deals 2d6 fire damage to anyone who begins their turn inside it.
  • Striding through, beginning your turn adjacent to, or beginning your turn less than 20 feet above a fire square results in 1d6 fire damage.
  • The air within and above the fire is filled with smoke. You think this could make you sick if you're not holding your breath

    Dolok Trees:

  • Dolok Trees act on the PC's turn, though for simplicity I will handle trees since they are mindless have a set routine once planted.
  • A 3 action incantation can be used to return a tree to it's feather form as long as the tree was not destroyed. The feather can then be re-planted at another time.

You now have time to prepare for battle. Dolok Tree handout is on Slide 8. And the Map is on slide 9. Everyone will get to plant one tree each. Trees can be planted in any square you wish though planting them in a square that is on fire, or underwater may pose a risk. You will then be able to be to start where you begin combat.

    I need the following:

  • Everyone decide where to plant your Dolok Tree. If you're not planting it immediately (such as you want to wait until done surveying), say that too. When planting your tree, please put your token next to it (you'll get to move your PC before combat). I'll add some caption text to make it easier after the initial placement
  • If you lack darkvision, then consider how you will see. Trees on fire and the Violet trees emit light but otherwise the battlefield will be in darkness unless you use light cantrip, have another light source, etc.
  • If you are using a different exploration activity than your default, now would be the time to say that.
  • I need up to two PC's to survey the battlefield. This is a secret perception check.
  • Anyone who is not a primary surveyor can choose to aid if they wish. You can aid with an open DC 20 check of: Athletics (to climb a tree for a better view), Scouting Lore (to check things out from a blind), Stealth (to sneak ahead for a closer look), Survival (to navigate the blasted terrain). You'll be aiding a specific teammate so say who you are aiding. Remember that aid is a status bonus and don't stack so if someone succeeds then unless you're crit-fishing then there is little to be gained from aiding the same person.
  • In Character discussion/strategizing is encouraged, but OOC is fine too

A gurgling shriek from the smoky darkness and the roar of a signal horn from Farheaven scouts portend the first assault. Astrid sets on a path along the river, planting torches, and then heads further along to see the enemy from afar. Astrid sees some horned demons with glowing red eyes and flaming hooves. She can't quite make out what these creatures are but is able to provide a description to everyone once re-grouped. Astrid also sees a serpent-like creature with scales that look like burning embers. Astrid recalls this creature as a Salamander and they are most known for their scales which can ignite and provide both protection as well as cause harm to anyone striking the salamander with a physical attack while the scales are aflame.

Anyone can attempt a secret recall knowledge check on the following:

You know this as a Brimorak who are known to be powerful spellcasters and are known to cast fireball among their fire-packed arsenal. If you crit succeeded, let me know what sort of info you'd be looking for.

Quinoline meanwhile tried to sneak ahead and help gather information but wasn't quite successful in providing any additional information.

If you'd like to update your PC token to a new location feel free to do that. Note that you're not able to predict the exact moment combat will break out so in terms of buffing you'd feel there's a good risk of losing any buffs with a duration less than a minute.
