The Salamander's plan to hold Astrid hostage was short-lived; another alchemical bomb from Quinoline, a strike from Astrid's shield, the pecking of Ro, and Jakoby's arrows bring the last Salamander down without much resistance. All before Greezgux has a chance to bite the creature to death, though maybe a good snack for later?

Seemingly unconcerned about her wounds, Astrid strides over to sit down in the shade of one of the healing trees. She pulls out her repair kit and gives her shield a few experimental whacks with a hammer before turning to Quinoline.
"Hey Quin, this new shield is a bit more complicated than the last one. Is there any chance you could knock out the dents that rat bastard put into it?"
It looks like the lesser sturdy shield has a DC of 23 to repair it. Astrid can do it herself but with a crafting of +11 she has a decet chance of failure.

"I think we should keep one tree covering the northern front - we still have no idea what is coming and from where" Proposing to keep Jakoby's tree right where it is "Ro will need to keep close to a light source - he's no owl ya know!" Failing another solution, Ro will keep by someone who has some sort of light source "Just in case we need to stay spread out, I think my first bush is a good place to hold, in the event of an attack from the Northern side" Proposing to keep Jakoby's original position in the bushes to the NW "Lastly, I imagine the bridge is the most strategically valuable spot - unless we get swimmers and flyers!" Do we have a contingency plan if the next wave is capable of a fly speed and/or swim speed?
After the Strategic discussion
Jakoby will gather up some of the lovely ritual-bathed herbs that survived last wave's land-scorching. Half of them she will quickly grind and mix with other collected herbs and apply the solution to Ro's burn-marks "It'll be okay boy" she assures him, petting his neck.

You could be a terror near and far, or a cowardly sniper in the bushes like me" she chuckles heartily here.
"Does your knife have a name? This bow here is called Regicide, for I have killed a king in my time - an experience I'd like not to repeat. Punished I was, for death took me, and my spirit travelled halfway to Elysium before my body was revived..." she takes a long draw here, pausing in thought as if reliving that journey "...Ah I see that I bore you. Astrid seems a bit embarrassed by the confidence older woman placens in her. She takes out a dagger and maps out the battlefield while she sits by the healing tree.
"We should probably still plan to hold the bridge but be prepared for attacks from different directions. I think we can place the trees a bit better. Having the two water trees placed forward works very well but we were out of reach of the healing trees for much of the fight. I suggest placing the trees in a square twenty feet apart with the two water trees forward and two healing trees supporting them. That should leave the diagonals at about thirty feet apart and the healing trees capable of healing either water tree if necessary. We should pull them back a bit in order to protect our primary objectives. Namely the two trails and the well. We can still hold the bridge but arrange our support a bit better. It is important for us to stay within thirty feet of the healing trees whenever possible.
The brown ensnaring tree can remain more or less where it is protecting our northern flank although I might stand a better chance of surviving the battle if we place it within range of one of the healing trees.
As far as fliers go it looks as though Jakoby and Ro are likely our best offence. Zac has a bow as well and hopefully our sorcerer has some ranged ability.
Quin and I will likely be least useful against fliers due to a more limited range. Nevertheless Quin has a strong arm and can toss her tinctures rather effectively. My hammer is a bit more awkward to throw but it has the advantage of always returning to my hand.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?"

I think that's 40 HP back, not sure what it's down.
"Ha! That's Quin. Always quick with a quip."
Astrid starts to give Quinoline a friendly punch on the arm but reconsiders and awkwardly sits down to let the alchemist repair the shield undisturbed.
It was only down 8 hp so 40 is more than enough for the next wave.
Astrid will indeed survey once again.
Also we should still have Astrid's 5 torches along the river on our side providing light for everyone unless it has been longer than an hour since she placed them. We can place some more if someone has some. We could gather up some materials for a bonfire or two. Anyone with a wayfinder can cast light as well. Astrid will do this if her one hour of darkvision wears off.
Astrid Gertasdottir
|
Astrid looks down at the map she has scrawled on the ground and frowns. She scribbles several numbers in the dirt next to her map, curses, then erases it and repeats the process. Finally she interrupts Quinoline's work for a moment to ask, "Hey Quin! What's the square root of 450?"
Quinoline Silicate
|
"21 squared is 441, so 21 and some coppers."
Quinoline helps replant the trees. I moved the trees per Astrid's suggestion (Quinoline would have suggested it as well, but Astrid wouldn't let her get a word in edgewise!) - the two blue trees are central to the map, and can essentially reach the whole map; the two violet trees form a box to double-cover a diamond-shaped patch behind the bridge. The brown tree is within range of the northern violet tree. I've put purple circles around the purple trees, but the blue circles would have been so big they weren't helpful.
"Zac, the greater darkvision elixir I gave you will last 24 hours, and it's got a little bit of watermelon flavoring to take the edge off the taste - and I'll make two more tomorrow morning, go ahead and drink it."
Quinoline hands Astrid a moderate darkvision elixir. "I brewed this a while ago. It'll only last an hour and doesn't have the watermelon flavoring, but I've tasted some of the ale you drink, so I don't think the taste will be a problem."
Quinoline will go over some of her consumables with the group. "I've got two scrolls of earthbind - if we meet fliers, I can bring them to the ground, but it would be up to someone to grab them and keep them there. I've also got two scrolls of see invisibility and one scroll of freedom of movement. None of these are cheap (freedom of movement is 70 gp, earthbind 30 gp each, see invisbility 12 gp each) but I'll use them when I need to."

Quinoline reaches down for a vial of clear liquid, only to find most of her bandolier empty. "I've only got two of these left, but when they're fresh, in the morning, I can make them into a lot of different things. I usually save a few for quickly brewing stuff up, but I'll brew some darkvision for myself in the morning, and I can make batches of two when I have time. So that vial is literally a leftover."
"By Iomedae's beard, I almost forgot ... I have two (daily) moderate mistform elixirs. They'll only last a minute, but they can help reduce the number of hits." Zac, Astrid, and Greezgux can decide amongst themselves. If nobody wants them, Quinoline will hold one in her hand at the beginning of combat.
Jakoby & Ro
|
After studying the Brown Dolok Tree, and listening to the others, Jakoby counters "I think if we have to choose between planting the Brown Dolok Tree within range of the Purple Dolok Tree, or, planting it so as to minimize it's chance of accidentally snagging everyone in our protected area, I believe the wisest choice is the latter. I view it as an off-center deterrent to head off and space out a potential ambush from the north, not a tool to support central skirmishes."
Unless someone strongly objects, Jakoby will keep the plant rooted in a more northern position!
Quinoline Silicate
|
Quinoline is fine with Jakoby's plan as well.
To be clear, I only moved the tree because I thought it would save (real life) time, not to impose any artificial consensus. I consider the placement of the trees somewhat like blocking in volleyball - the goal isn't to block the shot, but rather, limit the attacker's options to a few small lanes which can be more easily defended with mobile units (us). If there's a gap that opens up between the trees and the enemies rush there, we'll move there; even if the trees don't have a valid target for the whole combat, they'll have done their job by limiting the enemies' options. If we want to move the trees to channel them all into attacking across the bridge, I'm okay with that as well.
Greezgux Sragmiagz
|
I am good with the tree setup.
Greezgux shrinks down to a normal goblin size as he burps loudly, all of the compressed gasses being expelled from his body. He helps replanting of the trees as he sits back to look for a new hiding position. "This works as long we don't come across anymore tossing giant balls of fire around."
| GM redeux |
Giving a bit more time for everyone to RP if they wish. To answer a few questions / make comments.
1. @Zac, violet trees heal 2d8+16 per round, so max would be 4 rounds to heal you to full even if it rolled all 1s. So healing to full in 2 minutes wouldn't have been an issue. Youre welcome to save your Healer's gloves for later if you wish. Just say so.
2. With the torches Astrid spread out, if the group is keeping two violet trees then I think the map will be sufficiently covered in light for the humans without darkvision. IOW, the group seems prepared enough for darkness that I don't think we have to worry about it.
Zac Freelan 2
|
Yeah, I'll save my healer's gloves. Was thinking we were under that 12 minute time pressure to do other things. Heal up and then whatever time we had left, well the more time, the better chance for success. But I guess it won't matter if we have 10 minutes or the full 12 minutes to scout ahead and what not.
Zac recovers his torch and puts it out. In fact he recovers all his weapons and stows them.

"I agree" to Greezgux.
"What do those do?" Jakoby asks Quinoline.
A faint mist emanates from your skin, making you concealed for the listed duration (1 minute). As usual being concealed when your position is still obvious, you can't use this concealment to Hide or Sneak.
After she explains it to her "This big guy - assuming you can do that again! - can damn near reach the whole field, and seems to derrive some strange nourishment from eating his enemies. Our Captain has a nigh-indestructable shield. Me, I can support from afar. Therefore I think both you and Zac would benefit from those the most"
@Quinoline - agree about volleyball!
To Zac "Depending on what we see, that might help you decide which of your weapons you want to draw..." then back to Greezgux "...or where to hide!"
Putting her pipe out and stowing it, Jakoby readies to Survey the advancing front!
Perception +17 or +18 visual - She will use her last Hero Point to avert Critical Failure if needed!

A signal horn blasts through the air to alert the Farheaven clan forces. Commotion stirs once more as the surrounding areas prepare for more oncoming attackers. The fire continues to roar in contest on the western edge of the forest as howling is heard rapidly approaching despite no footsteps being heard. Jakoby and Astrid attempt to survey the battlefield, though they cannot glean any info as the enemy arrives too quickly. From the southern and northern borders several hounds come out from the woods. There also is a charred humanoid creature wielding a bow that is moving in what appears to be a failed attempt at being stealthy along the northwest perimeter. Astrid is first to respond...

An instant after Astrid contemplates what to do, the first shot arcs across the battlefield -- an arrow from an a previously unseen Yellow archer! It lands next to Astrid's feet. The assailant runs across the central path and attempts to disappear from sight. Hidden to anyone with DC 29 perception or lower.
A Teal archer also reveals themselves by firing a shot at Greezgux. Despite Greezgux's cover the arrow penetrates his skin! Hit, for 18 piercing
Pink Hound runs over the water as though its running on air. It approaches the southern perimeter of the base and then paws at the edge of the light and emits unearthly baying that starts to send chills down everyone's back.
Everyone make a DC 25 will Save. This is an audible effect with fear and mental traits for those who have feats that care about those type of effects
After your will save, everyone give me a free perception check to see if you notice anything (this will be for the rest of the hounds' turns but asking for it in advance)
Pausing for saves and in case Astrid wants to re-insert. Otherwise 3 more hounds will be up next.

Keeping his eyes keenly fixated on multiple potential prey, he zeroes in, and awaits his master's command.

Overall the party seems largely unaffected with only Jakoby slightly losing her nerve to the unearthly baying.
Three hounds remain to move in on the camp. First, the white hound makes a direct line for the brown Dolok tree. It runs over the water without issue. It then opens it's jaws and attempts to bite one of the branches from the tree but fails to connect due to the underbrush. It tries a 2nd time but to no avail. 2 misses
Red runs towards the southern side of the camp and unleashes an ear-splitting howl, different than the earlier baying. A highly focused burst of sonic energy shoots in a 20 foot cone hitting both Zac and his blue tree! @Zac, DC 25 basic reflex save or take 22 sonic dmg. Zacs blue tree fails taking full dmg.
Green runs towards the brown dolok tree and also starts to bite it. The Green hound grabs a branch and it then tries to twist the branch in what looks like an attempt to knock the tree down, but the tree doesn't budge. 17 piercing dmg
You notice that the Red and Pink Hounds stopped abruptly when they reached the perimeter of the violet tree's bright light 20ft from violet tree
