The gargantuan dragon ignores Sir Falcon and everyone else that talks; and then once it is finished with giving its demands the great dragon mutters some arcane sounding words. Its form shimmers before it disappears with a loud, bright pop. The townsfolk gasp and many of them began to wail in despair as the implications of what the dragon said sink in.
The town militia begins ushering people to return to their homes while the acolytes from the Abadarian church continue attending to the wounded and the dead lying about. Lady Oregena announces that the estate auction will be put on hold indefinitely and urges the villagers to remain calm as she decides on the next course of action.
The Baroness gestures to the adventurers to follow her to her villa. The gnome historian Bassy runs up to the noblewoman and on the way she also summons Sheriff Benhovy, the stablemaster Lezara Dodgion, and Eupaphenia Targas, the priestess of the church of Abadar.

Irlana calls for the party, and anyone else needing healing to come close. She instructs them to focus on her while she activates her new healing ability and sends healing energy out to everyone within thirty feet. "If you're not hurt focus on healing everyone in the area. Let the energy flow to those that need it most."

The Abadarian acolytes offer to heal the wounded adventurers, and Irlana also has healing abiliities to offer her allies as well as any nearby wounded townsfolk.
Everyone is fully healed!
The Baroness touches the halfling on the shoulder. "I think you've saved anyone who can still be saved. Eupaphenia's clergy can take over.
Please, I would appreciate it if you and your friends could come with me to my villa so that we can talk."
Meanwhile, Andwise considers whether he should make a break out of town now and Sir Falcon contemplates whether the party could forge a copy of the books they sold. Perhaps the stout fellow that's now following him around could pull it off; after all Eltran did spent almost a week reading the book that the dragon demanded by name.

![]() |

"Thank you Irlana"
Andwise, out of more comfort than necessity, slings himself onto Tanssi's back and rides alongside the Baroness to her quarters in silence- contemplating the next series of steps.
Once inside, he breaks the silence.
"I am certain you realized, as did we, that the dragon was an illusion? A particularly good one, but an illusion none-the-less. Are there other prolific or powerful magic users in town or in the surrounding counties?"

![]() |

Irlana nods and calls to the rest of the team to follow the Baroness. Once inside Andwise makes the statement about the illusion. "An illusion that covers visual, auditory and olfactory components would take a fairly high level caster. Or, the caster could have paid a high price for a scroll. He, or she, only missed the little detail of the damage that should have been done to the roof. And it seemed like the smell disappeared instantly when it disappeared. Likely the caster cancelled the spell to make it look like the dragon had teleported."
"Regardless, the threat may be real, just likely not with the power portrayed by the illusion. Interesting that he/she was looking for the books. The illusion's words indicate that it was an associate of Hunclay. If so the caster should know that there isn't enough gold in this town to pay the demanded ransom. That may give us an option. It stated two weeks to pay the ransom. How long does it take to get to the monastery? If we leave immediately perhaps we'd get there early enough to state that we need to negotiate. That could get us into the lair of the beast and give us a chance to figure out an ambush.
"

Before anyone gets a chance to speak, Lady Oregena gets right down to business and asks Eupaphenia to give her an estimate of how much money Belhaim could scrap together. The priestess opens up a ledger and after consulting it for a minute she answers, "I would estimate that if gathered every bit of money in this town we could be ensured to have around 20,000 gp. There is a possibility that some of the townsfolk have extra money or jewelry squirreled away but there is no way we'll be able to raise enough money to meet the dragon's ransom."
Oregena doesn't seem to be surprised at all by this, and simply says "Well, I don't think paying Aeteperax is going to be an option."
The sherrif gruffly suggests, "I know a few Sheylnite lay-abouts that our town would be better off without. Perhaps if we sent them to the dragon as a distraction, he would be willing to lower the ransom." This comment is met with by derision and shock. Lady Oregena gives him a withering look and the sherrif mutters, "Apologies my lady. My jest was in bad taste."
The people there began to argue about whether they should try to negotiate a payment plan with the dragon or evacuate the town when the party speaks up and suggests the dragon might be an illusion. The gnome Bassy smiles and winks knowingly at the party.
"So you noticed it as well, I see. I've been around for a while and I've seen a lot of illusions in my time. Inexperienced illusionists have a tendency to overwhelm the eyes and ears of their victims with flashy sights and noises, but they often forget many of the little details. Its wings didn't stir the air and its talons didn't scrap on the stones of the house it landed on. It sounds like you noticed it as well."
In response to Sir Falcon, Bassy says "Its entirely possible that its just some mischeavous wizard. I wouldn't rule out it being a dragon entirely though, that would fit with what you learned from the Bloodvow Kobolds. The name Aeteperax is an old one, and the original Aeteperax’s bones should still be out there in Dragonfen, coiled around the Crypt of Tula Belhaim. At the very least, if you can confirm those bones are still there, then it seems obvious that what you all saw tonight wasn’t really Aeteperax risen from the dead.”

![]() |

"That fire drake wouldn't have been attacking for some kobold. I think it's a dragon. But some lesser one than Aeteperax, playing on the legend. We can go and verify Aeteperax's bones are where they should be. But we should also search the monastery and see what's there."

![]() |

Lady Oregena speaks. “I can’t offer a monetary reward sufficient to
lure you into undertaking so deadly a mission as slaying a dragon or a powerful spellcaster. However, I must ask: Will you do this task for the sake of Belhaim? If you succeed, I shall raise each of you to the rank of Knight of Taldor. Little Belhaim and its inhabitants are lost if you don’t prevail. What say you?”
Maffei steps forward from the shadows of the corner and whispers, "Honestly, I do not care what happens to the little people of Belhaim, but Irlana, Andwise and Sir Falcon, you gave me my life and my freedom. I will eagerly take up this quest if that is what you wish."

![]() |

Irlana looks quizzically at Lady Oregena. "The illusion of the dragon threatened all of us equally. If its threat are true we cannot leave and will be part of its destruction. We have to face it, and slay whatever is behind it."

![]() |

There are cheers from the people assembled in Baroness Oregna's parlor as the adventurers once again agree to come to the aid of Belhaim.
"Once again you are coming to rescue us from crisis. I humbly thank you for all for your courage." There is some conversation between the delegates there and they decide that the adventurers should be given whatever assistance they need in their quest.
First, the Baroness decrees that any of the magic items confiscated from the Baron Hunclay's manor should be loaned to them, despite the fact that they have been purchased in auction. She promises to compensate the winners of the bids for the cost of any items that the party consumes.
Second, the sherrif reluctantly pulls a thick iron ring off his finger. "This ring has protected me and my ancestors from harm many times. Now, this is a family heirloom and I was hoping to give it to my idiot of a son some day, so I expect to get this back when you've slain the dragon. Make sure you don't die so that you can return it to me safely."
This is a +2 ring of protection that the party can use for the remainder of the adventure.
The elderly stablemaster, Lezara Dodgion, removes a scabbarded sword from her waist and with a deep bow she presents the weapon to Sir Falcon. The scabbard is made of red lacquered wood that shines in the lamp light of the room. "In my adventuring days, I spent some time in Tien and learned a great deal about the art of swordsmanship there. When I saw you carrying a similar blade, at first I thought that it was a coincidence but now I can see that it was fate."
This is a flame tongue katana
Eupaphenia promises that any spellcasting that they can provide will be cost free from now on.
Finally, Bassy presents the adventurer's with a brass key. "This is a relic given by the the town's founder Lady Tula to her grandmother.
It should open the way to her crpyt. When she gave the key away, she told her grandmother to keep this key safe until the need for dragonslayers rises again.”

Sorry, vacation had less internet than I anticipated
"There seems to be very little between choice and duty. While I rarely feel tied to a course of action, this seems as one of the times- if not for Belhaim, then for those gathered here."
He is quiet for a moment, before speaking again.
Tanssi is in agreement, especially if Maffie continues on with us. We have no need for weapons- though Tanssi could make use of the ring if others aren't

Falcon stares down at the sword and gives it a practice swing.

![]() |

Irlana steps up beside Sir Falcon and smiles at his use of the flaming sword. "Just like a knight of old with a sword of flame you'll lead us to destroy the enemy that threatens us."
She reaches out to take the key. "I'll keep the key safe."

![]() |

Maffei nods at Sir Falcon and says, "With your flaming sword and my icy blades, we will make for a steamy pair of blades."
Baroness Oregena claps her hands and declares, "So then we have a plan. You will be our heroes and rescue Belhaim from the tyranny of this so-called Aeteperax. Sherrif, please ensure that the everyone in town stay in their homes tonight and make sure that no one leaves the town. Even if our enemy is not Aeteperax, whoever it was that attacked us has command over dangerous flying monsters. I take his threat to kill anyone who tries to escape the area very seriously."
"And for now, I would recommend that you get a good night rest. You are welcome to stay in my manor; but if you are more comfortable at the inn then just let Talia know that she can send the bill for your room and board to me."
With that the Baroness adjourns the meeting.
The scroll of campfire wall, excruciating deformation, haunting mists, and magic circle against chaos are turned over to the party. They also receive the two oils of keen edge, the potion of undetectable alignment, the potion of protection from acid, and the potion of protection from fire.

Eltran Katsu' |

Eltran stands up and bows towards the Baroness, a look of determined resolve etched on his face.
“Your graciousness is well noted, Baroness. And I assure you, we will not let this threat loom over Belhaim. We shall rest, gather our strength, and prepare for what lies ahead!“ he declares.
He then turns to his companions, his eyes burning with a fiery passion.
“You heroes, this is not just about facing a beast. This is about protecting these homes, the families, and their lives. This dragon, has underestimated us. We shall prove it wrong!“
He offers a respectful nod to the Baroness and his comrades before striding towards the inn, his mind abuzz.

![]() |

Irlana is fine staying at the manor or the inn.

![]() |

"I appreciate the offer, however Tanssi and I are more comfortable in... less opulent surroundings I shall meet up with the others before heading out"

![]() |

The party decides to stay in Talia's simple country inn rather than the Baroness's manor. Even though the bedding in the Wise Piper is just simple straw pallets and blankets, Talia keeps the fire warm and the building clean. Despite being simpler fare, the food there is better than what the Baroness's servants make.
The inn is full when they arrive, but Talia has kept the adventurers' area clear. There is plenty of food on hand; vegetable stew, roasted fish, dark bread and apple pies. And of course, there is plenty of cider as well.
In the morning the party can see that everyone in town is clearly afraid but when the adventurers emerge from the inn there is a glimmer of hope on their faces. A couple of them point up to something in the sky. When they look up they see a pair of red shapes flying in circles. They realize that they are two flame drakes, surveying the village from hundreds of feet in the air.
The attitude of everyone in Belhaim has increased by one level due their actions during the auction attack.

Eltran Katsu' |

Eltran steps outside the inn and gazes up at the circling flame drakes which is a grim reminder of the looming threat.
“Look at them, circling above, thinking they instill fear. But all they do is fuel the flame of our determination!“
Turning his gaze back to the villagers, “My friends, these are testing times, indeed. But many have been through the crucible before and emerged stronger. This is but another trial, another test. Our hearts are stronger than their flames, our will fiercer than their fangs. Together, we will face this threat, and together, we will prevail!“

![]() |

Irlana looks up at the figures circling overhead. Two of them this time? If they were real that would indicate how upset the enemy was over the loss of the one that was slain. But they could be illusions....
"OK. We're on the clock then. Let's get out there and put an end to this enemy, once and for all!"

![]() |

Andwise glances up into the daylit sky.
Too much light for my taste. Tanssi too. But, we must do what we must do. Come friend- take this ring.
Since no one else claimed the ring, I am giving it to Tanssi
"Then it is time and we should be going"
With that, Andwise climbs onto the back of Tanssi and turns to face the road out of town

Andwise sidles up to Tanssi, before swing up onto its saddle. Well done, your distraction was important.

![]() |

If my math is correct, I believe Eltran, Andwise took 6 damage. Sir Falcon is at 1 damage and Irlana is at -18. You guys have a couple of different resources for healing (I think you have a wand that you bought earlier even), you can decide how you want to heal up the damage.
With the drake dead, the party looks around and sees that the coast is clear. They gather up their belongings, heal the wounded and set off for the Crypt of Tula.
After another two hours of walking they reach a clearing. In the middle of the clearing is a mound of earth surrounded by a massive skeleton that must be the bones of a great dragon. Even hundreds of years after the dragon’s fall, its bones are an awe-inspiring sight. The skeleton has partially sunk into the bog, but enough remains that it still appears to be draped over the low, earthen mound. On the side of the mound is a stone door with a single, rough keyhole.

Wanting the healing to be quick so the team can continue Irlana calls them all together and uses her team healing ability from the wandering spirit.

"I hope it isn't trapped, or jammed. It's been quite a while!" She puts the key in the hole and carefully tries to turn it.

Wow! Not good rolls!
The gibbering from the monster's many mouth starts to get incredibly loud. The noise is unbearable, and everyone hearing feel an urge to drop what they are doing and claw at their eyes to make it stop.
Everyone needs to make a Will Save DC 13. This is a sound based, mind-affecting compulsion insanity effect.
Then one of the creature's mouths spits a stream of acidic spit at Maffei. It hits her right in the eyes.
"Damn this thing! I've been blinded!"
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

As its doing this, the creature is also biting at its assailants with its many, many fanged mouths. Unfortunately for Sir Falcon, the monster seems to be directing most of its attacks at him.

Grab, Maffei: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 15
The creature bites Falcon three times and gets Maffei twice. The teeth also attempt to latch on to both adventurers, but they manage to pull themselves out of its grip.

Also, if someone does fail against the gibbering; please roll on the confusion chart as well:

26-50 Does nothing but babble incoherently
51-75 Deals 1d8 points of damage + Str modifier to self with item in hand
76-100 Attacks nearest creature (for this purpose, a familiar counts as part of the subject’s self)
