GM Fuzzfoot's 1940 era Mummy's Mask Campaign

Game Master PJP

Maps & Handouts

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am a big fan of 1940s era movies, particularly action and adventure themed. I also find that I really enjoy longer running games to short scenarios, just for really getting to know the characters and players. I have been thinking about trying a campaign with this as the backdrop, some limited options (at least to start), and dark themes yet humorous characters. So, if this is stirring a fondness for playing Indiana Jones, The Mummy, or King Solomon's Mines, or taking a ride on the African Queen (or the Jungle Cruise), this might be the right story for you. The tone will be adventure and intrigue! Danger and excitement! I am not opposed to a romance or two, as long as it stays in the 1940s equivalent ratings (G/PG).

This will not start immediately. I am going to wait until I wrap up a few games I am running now before I split my attention too much. So, I will put a tentative deadline of April 15 for applications. And at that point, we will probably spend a week or two working out the crunch. In any case, this is intended to be a long haul campaign, so know that you are signing up for something that will likely run for years if we get a really strong group.

These are my (planned) rules:

1. Pathfinder is what I know best so I will make it work for me. I am very tempted to use 2e here, but because of class selections might not be quite there yet. So if you post a response, please say which of these you prefer and why.

2. This will not be high-powered. Not every option will be available. Where we use something, I will tend to stick to the rules as written - I am not a big fan of lots of house rules, too much to keep track of. But this means we will need to be flexible with each other. I will be using Hero points, though, as I believe they will come in handy. I am thinking either a 15 pt buy for stats, maybe 20, although if we use 2e standard creation will apply. (We might need to re-skin some of the ancestry and background elements)

3. You will be playing a pre-gen, sort of. What I have in mind is 4-6 very specific roles, and you are applying for one of them. However, I am only making the shell, and this is only the starting point. You fill in the details, trying to keep within the starting flavor. Once we start, though, what you take for level 2+ is up to you. If the roles change, or morph into something else, no problem. When you apply, pick which one you are most interested in as your response. However, if a second or even third strikes your fancy, make a note.

4. This will be an all human game. It will also start as a no-magic game... sort of. As you uncover strange artifacts, some magic will certainly come into play - first against you, but ultimately stuff you can use. However, some strictly magical things will be adapted for more of a scientific-ish nature (Alchemists spells won’t be considered magic, for instance).

5. I know that I cannot put in the time to do all-original material. Therefore, I will be running either an AP (I am really thinking Mummy’s mask right now), or a series of PFS scenarios and/or modules. Clearly, there will be a lot of modifications either way, but at least the basic stories, maps, bad guys, etc. are there for me to lean on. If you have a preference between these, please note it in your response. If you have a better suggestion, feel free to share that as well!

6. Leveling up will be episodic, meaning that when you hit a milestone, everyone will level up together. I will also probably be using some version of the Relic system or auto-improving weapons. So rather than using magic to make a +1 revolver, we will probably flavor it as “famous, more famous, etc” to account for the +1, +2. This way, whatever you pick as your favored weapon(s) can grow with you.

7. While flavored after 1940’s Earth, we will be using Golarion maps and basic cultures for the specifics. Most gods will no longer be revered, but the history of them remains (and some still have sects of followers). Some cults might even have access to ancient magics (despite what I said about no magic). There will be an Axis v Allies war in the making. There will certainly be a sense of good versus evil, right from wrong. And in case you aren’t sure, you are on the good side. I am not yet sure which countries will be on which side, but Osiron will likely be rather caught in the middle.

8. How are you dealing with vehicles? Yah, I haven’t worked out the details yet. There will be cars, camels, airplanes, blimps, motorcycles, etc., but I don’t expect to make them part of the main events. How about technology? Well, this is before the age of computers and really much electronics, but phones, telegraphs, and movies are all real things. Electric lights won’t be too common in the areas you visit, but in a city, for sure. Radios are popular, but again there won’t be much signal where you tend to visit. If we go 2e, Guns & Gears is set to be released in late 2021, so I would expect to incorporate that.

9. What are these roles you speak of? Here is what I have in mind. You can tweak or suggest another, if you like. I can’t say that will keep you at the top of the list, but maybe you will strike the right note! I will work hard to make sure everyone has fairly equal chance to shine, so pick the flavor you like.
The explorer: You do this for a living. Action and adventure are your reason for being. Your starting class is likely a Gunslinger, but could also be a Rogue, Brawler or even Investigator. Perception and disable devices are among your best skills, and you need to be decent enough in melee combat to survive a fair number of tussles.
The librarian: You are the book-worm, and likely the one who deals with socialites. History and lore are paramount. Brains over brawn (for the most part). Social skills also a plus - you are the one that needs to get funding for the next expedition. You are the most likely to be able to read an ancient scroll and make the magic work. Investigator is a good choice, alchemist or maybe even an occultist would work.
The equipment manager: Purveyor of necessary tools. The person who knows how to buy and sell goods that might not be readily available in the marketplace. Social and sneak skills are best - probably a Rogue, but could be an Investigator, or anything with the right skills. 2e could be an inventor. Dex and Cha are key, but Wisdom will also be a big help.
The muscle: You are the “tough”. Your job is to help the others stay alive, knock down a door, or convince someone to help you out by intimidating them. Fighter, brawler, or monk are the most likely candidates, maybe ranger/slayer would work. With the right flavor and adjustments, a barbarian could fit. Keep in mind- heavy armor isn’t really a thing you want to wear around 1940’s Casablanca or in the desert sands..
The sidekick: Right, I know. Who wants to be the annoying sidekick, right? But every movie seemed to have one in some flavor or another. If you take this roll, try to make us laugh. Any class would do here, but I would think Rogue, Brawler or Bard is a best start. Of course, the sidekick rarely stays that way in the long run.
The 6th wheel - transportation: You’re the driver, the pilot. I am not sure I want to make this a PC - it might be best run as an NPC since I think they would be out of the action quite a bit. But if you have an idea to make it work, throw it at me. Could double as a medic type... or if you just have something outside of the first 5, this is the spot you are competing for.

If you are still reading this, I assume you are interested. So - what to do next? There is no need to flesh out a character crunch yet - in fact, since we aren’t sure which rules will be used, that would be hard to do! Post a response with your answers to the following:

Why do you want to be considered?
Which role do you want to submit for?
What would your basic crunch approach be (class, feats/weapons, etc). You won’t be locked into this - but just to get an idea of what you are thinking. Just want to know how you are going to make this yours.
2e or 1e? Is your choice a preference or a deal breaker?
AP or small adventures? Or other ideas?
Describe your character - what do you look like, what’s your personality? How would someone else describe your character?

If things start leaning one way or the other on which rules and which material, I might lock in a choice before the deadline. I know 2e would mean probably resorting to playtest materials on some characters.

Very Cool! Instead of yammering on about how awesome this idea is I will instead answer the questions.:

The Questions:

Why do you want to be considered?
I love the stories set in an era where there is still a little mystery to the world, where we haven’t quite proven that the supernatural doesn’t exist. Whether the movies: The mummy series, Indiana jones, King Solomon's Mines, The Ghost and the Darkness and many of the lesser known ones. Also the books: A lot of Robert E. Howard stories set in the era, even read a lot of “Doc Savage” the man of bronze. I still have all of the Tarzan books.
Which role do you want to submit for?
I would play any of them. but I would prefer the adventurer first then the Muscle. But even the 6th wheel is doable; play a local guide that becomes part of the team like Ardeth Bay or Sallah.
What would your basic crunch approach be (class, feats/weapons, etc). You won’t be locked into this - but just to get an idea of what you are thinking. Just want to know how you are going to make this yours.
It would really depend on the more specific era and place. Since we are setting it in Golarion (Which is an interesting idea, for simplicity sake I hope we would designate which country is similar to earth cultures.) It would depend on the nation where we are active at. It would also depend on ‘Gun Rules’ are guns everywhere? Also depending on what classes you allow. Would a character find that they had a bloodline. My first instinct is to play the adventurer as a Slayer or the muscle as a brawler.

So examples of character’s I’ve created for similar games to show how I would make it my own.
Angus Elphinstone was originally created for a D20 Modern game set near the turn of the century, but altered for a 'Call of Cthulhu' game.
Sariel Patrick Cornelius was created for a near-modern alternate 'league of extraordinary persons' game. Using pathfinder 1 rules.
2e or 1e? Is your choice a preference or a deal breaker?
Sadly it is, presently I’ve only played 1e and don’t really want to learn a new rule set along with an entirely new setting,
AP or small adventures? Or other ideas?
I really relish the idea of creating a character at first level and taking them ‘to the end’ so an AP would rock. Especially something like ‘Mummy’s Mask’ that you could switch to ‘that sort of vibe’
’Describe your character - what do you look like, what’s your personality? How would someone else describe your character?
A lot of this would depend on the setting, era and tone. Let’s say it’s Mummy’s Mask. in a pre-WW2 setting.

I would think a Shoanti brawler would fit right in. Someone who followed the old ways. Still would spend his summers up on the Storval Plateau, Works at a ranch training horses. Met a librarian spending some time at a ‘Dude ranch’ at a local bar. He got in a fight with a couple of chelaxians when they called the librarian an egg head. He was just looking for a reason to pop the loudmouthed southerners and they gave it to him. Ended up talking to the Librarian most of the night over a couple of beers. Learned the fellow was headed to Osirion, decided to ride along. Hmmmm, average height, thick arms and shoulders, barrel chested and a little bow legged from a lot of riding. Not overly outgoing but honest to the point of being a little blunt. Has a ‘live and let live’ attitude as long as you don’t insult Him, his heritage or his friends. Not real impressed with ‘Modern stuff’ so prefers horses to trucks and a solid revolver to an automatic. Everything he carries has a history so it’s not necessarily the newest or the brightest but it’s his.

So the adventurer would be a slayer (or ranger with appropriate archetype) from Andoran the son of a merchant ships captain, who wants to see the world not just the ports. Hmmm...

I was spit balling on the Shoanti brawler, mixing a couple of tropes for a playable character. The Adventurer I’d want to spend a little more time on once we knew the world a little better, but I don’t think you would be disappointed.

Very interested in the idea, willing to work around whatever you want to do and will keep an eye on the Interest check / Recruitment.

There was a tv series starring Fred Ward for HBO. Let me find it.

OK Cast a Deadly Spell

Wikipedia wrote:

Ward stars as 1948 hardboiled private detective H. Philip Lovecraft, in a fictional Los Angeles where magic is real, monsters and mythical beasts stalk the back alleys, zombies are used as cheap labor, and everyone — except Lovecraft — uses magic every day. Yet cars, telephones and other modern technology coexist with magic in this world.

Lovecraft is hired by wealthy Amos Hackshaw to find Hackshaw's former chauffeur, Larry Willis, who has stolen a mysterious grimoire called the Necronomicon and recover the missing book within forty-eight hours. However, what seems like a simple "forty bucks a day and expenses" case turns out to be not so simple. Things take a chilling turn as he finds himself embroiled in a plot involving magical hitmen, pure damsels, old flames and enemies, and ancient evils, all connected by the Necronomicon, and may lead to the destruction of the world.

I enjoyed the show

This sounds cool, and I love the genre as well.

Questions:

Why do you want to be considered?

This is a unique story idea, and Golarion in particular seems ripe for a whole host of really interesting ancient artifacts by the time they get to their equivalent of the 1940s. I'm all about alternate takes on things.

Which role do you want to submit for? Muscle.

What would your basic crunch approach be (class, feats/weapons, etc). You won’t be locked into this - but just to get an idea of what you are thinking. Just want to know how you are going to make this yours.

I'm thinking actually dex-based, with over time 4-5 levels of uRogue in addition to mainly barbarian/fighter levels, possibly with a brawler/MoMS dip. He'd fill the muscle role with intimidation/hand to hand combat, but also be all about the dirty tricks/feinting. Preferred weapon would likely be various forms of knife (dagger, kukri, etc), and would possibly add on an appropriate fighting style (I enjoy Snake Style but would have to find a way for it to work with knives).

2e or 1e? Is your choice a preference or a deal breaker? I only know 1e, so if you're going 2e I'm sure there are lots of people better suited than I.

AP or small adventures? Or other ideas? The crunch on this character would likely take until level 4 to fully come out, but otherwise no preference.

Describe your character - what do you look like, what’s your personality? How would someone else describe your character?

He's basically a failed Librarian. I'd say from this Golarion's equivalent of England. Upper class, sent to an elite school, but managed to be bad enough at his studies to wash out worse than his wealthy family could pay to overcome. Thus had to enlist in the army at a lower rank than his birth would normally suggest, where he fought in one or another "small colonial wars" and his actual talents came out. What he's really good at is cunning and brutal martial arts and small-scale tactical scheming. He'd sort of look the part of an aristocrat, but his deep tan and battle scars would give the lie to any attempt to actually pretend to be one anymore. Personality-wise, he enjoys what he does and is happy unless he has to deal with the elite world he was raised in. He rejects that with a vehemence that badly disguises his regret at leaving it behind. He'd be described as quietly scary, the sort that "doesn't look it[of course, only an idiot would miss his air of danger], but you don't want to anger him or he'll have your guts for garters." He's got fierce personal loyalties, and no other commitment to any principle at all. Willing to do anything for his comrades, including the unpleasant stuff.

Further thoughts:

Thinking most of the levels long-term would be Skirmisher fighter, with a few of uBarb (and the 3-5 uRogue previously listed, with the Thug archetype). Rage would not represent primitive upbringing (though he’d describe it as “going native”), but more just impulse control issues in battle--having been brought up in a very refined, repressed culture, he finds having the chance to just gack people with knives extremely hard to resist or stop partaking in.

Feats would include Power Attack, Cornugon Smash, the dirty trick tree (including the Underhanded Trick rogue talent), and probably Swordplay Style. At Rogue 5, taking the Intimidate skill unlock.

His air of menace would be more personality- than physicality-driven. Rather than being hulking or otherwise obviously dangerous, he'd just look like the sort of person who'd viciously wreck you if provoked, even if it's not obvious exactly how. But dumb brute muscle types might reasonably overlook that, to their detriment.

Stats with 15 pb:

Str 13 - 3
Dex 14 - 5 (Human boost to 16)
Con 14 - 5
Int 13 - 3
Wis 7 - -4
Cha 13 - 3

Howdy! I've got some interest in getting in on this! Definitely cribbing off of Robert's formatting, but that's just because he's so consistently good :)

Questions:

Why do you want to be considered?
I read so many comic books from the 40's. They may be campy, but I prefer my superhero's a little on the lighter side than on the edgy murder-spree kind. Also I know it's a Golarion setting, but having the Nazi's always be the comically inept bad guys was a nice cathartic way of viewing them.
Which role would you like to submit for?
Either the librarian or the sidekick, probably in that order. Bard is my favorite class; I like making the party murder machines tick more efficiently.
Basic Crunch?
I like to build a fully fleshed out character, so these are just some ideas that flew into my head while writing!
A lot of what Robert said applies to me as well, gun availability and the like. I don't see a way to trade out the bardic spellcasting features, despite my best efforts, so depending on how allowed bard is, that'd be my first pick for librarian, because bardic knowledge is wonderful, and being a scatterbrained know-it-all is lots of fun. I'd remain bard for the sidekick role, but swap out the knowledgeable features with an architype, such as court fool.
Should bard not be allowed, or a more stereotypical knowledge monkey be desired, phantom thief rogue is another favored class design, or a non-bomb hucking alchemist, such as promethian alchemist. For a side kick, I'd probably take a page out of Jackie Chan slapstick, and go brawler for picking up "funny" combat feats on the fly.
Prestige classes as they might come up
1st or 2nd e?
1st edition for me, and it'd be a dealbreaker to have to learn 2e as well I'm afraid.
AP's?
I like adventure paths, and have never played any version of mummies mask, so that sounds pretty great to me!
Describe your character! Assuming Librarian, more than happy to whip one up for a sidekick if that's my role!
Absentminded. Beautiful. Sharp Tongued. Very well informed. All of these things immediately become evident from just a few minutes of conversation with Olivia Harding, gentlewoman extraordinaire. If it's in a book, chances are Olivia's read it at one point or another. Even if it's in a book that probably was best left unread. Especially if it's in a book that probably was best left unread. Of average height and build with hair, eyes, and skin all the same shade of brown, it's not just her appearance but her complete and utter confidence in herself that draws people to Olivia. Which is good, because she often laughs that she'd forget her head if it wasn't attached to her shoulders. Without other people around her, she'd have a lot of difficulty pulling herself out of the messes she gets in, but as long as she's got friends, allies, coworkers, associates, or even just other bystanders, she can rally people to action.
Recently, she ended up in a kind of unsavory type of bar. She misread the sign, "dude ranch" as Jude's ranch, as she was looking for a fellow named Jude, word on the street was that he had an incomplete copy of the Necronomicon that had been annotated by the mad mage himself. When she turned down the advances of several Cheliaxian gentlemen, they got kinda huffy, calling her an "egghead know-it-all." Things coulda gotten pretty heated from there, but fortunately she ran into a kind Shaonti fella who bailed her out of that picklement. Turns out she had the wrong damn settlement, could you believe it? She could tell you the average rainfall of this town, but had forgotten to turn right a couple hundred miles back. Still, it wasn't all bad, this guy certainly seems to be a reliable type...
Fun factoids!
She's currently married to Lord Harding, a collector of artifacts and great lover of reading!
Her favorite color is purple
A mummy once fell on her when she was exploring a tomb. Not a great time.
She tries to write to her husband and parents at least once a week to let them know that she's still doing well

** spoiler omitted **...

Of course. *grunts* Another fancy lady...MRS degree from the University of Magnimar, no doubt. Or Korvosa, even. Well, let's see if she solves more problems than she causes. I'm sure her Lord Husband would be much bothered if we didn't make sure she returned in one piece. Good thing we're very good at that sort of thing. Besides, there are many uses for well-connected egghead know-it-alls, certainly more than for drunk Chelaxians.

questions:

I love Indiana Jones movies and also many of the WW2 movies (where eagles dare is a favourite), and the idea of a dieselpunk game attracts. Very interested.

Which role do you want to submit for?
The equipment manager sounds fun. Or maybe the sidekick.

What would your basic crunch approach be (class, feats/weapons, etc)? You won’t be locked into this - but just to get an idea of what you are thinking. Just want to know how you are going to make this yours.
This would depend on the ruleset. PF1 A rogue (underworld chemist) would be my first choice, In PF2 an inventor, or rogue, or straight alchemist. If playing the sidekick, a ninja (more naruto than a deadly assassin)

2e or 1e? Is your choice a preference or a deal-breaker?
Either is OK. A slight preference for PF2

AP or small adventures? Or other ideas?
Epic path, all the way.

Describe your character - what do you look like, what’s your personality? How would someone else describe your character?
Similar to the character of Ralph from the movie Romancing the Stone 2, or Supply Sgt crapgame from kelly's heroes. Starts off in it for the money, but soon becomes invested in helping the others (although is still in it for the money). Sees himself as a businessman. Others see him as a greedy but useful chiseller.
As for the sidekick, A younger sort seeking adventure and is looking for her lost father. A bit too enthusiastic for her own good. Actually quite competent but a bit naive and scatterbrained. In PF2 she could be a rogue instead.
Others would see her as a bit annoying, but surprisingly useful from time to time. Likes practical jokes.

Nice a 'Where Eagles Dare' and 'Kelly's Hero's' reference in one post. Makes we want to do a Clint Eastwood war movie marathon...Hey chillblame with those movies your showing your age. What's worse is I own all three of the movies you mentioned on DVD. Sadly I've lost my copy of 'Guns of Navarone' on VHS

Hey GM Fuzzfoot can we have a little more information on the setting so we can develop the characters a little bit more?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I used to watch a lot of these. Also, I like force ten from Navarone, Tora, Tora, Tora, a bridge too far, the battle of Britain, The longest day, The eagle has landed. forty thousand horsemen and so on.

Sigh, yes. I am a bit dated

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Not an overwhelming number of responses, but everyone who has responded seems to be right in the spirit of what I was thinking, so certainly enough to move forward. Nice!

BTW - Kelly's Heroes is one of my all time favorite movies! <b>"Don't hit me with those negative waves so early in the morning..." </b> Force Ten is up there too. I have not seen 'Where Eagles Dare' though - I will check that out this weekend.

Given who has responded so far, I think we will definitely stick to 1e. It will be easier for me anyway, since less to convert. Also, I was already heavily leaning towards Mummy’s Mask, so I think we can lock this in as well.

Here are my thoughts on what I see so far:

@chillblame - I like where you are going with the equipment manager. Either Ralph or Crapgame would be perfect for that role.

@Captain Genrica - Yes, this is a great concept for the librarian. Not sure why, but I laughed when I saw the simple line “Her favorite color is purple.” It just sounds like something she would day in the middle of some lecture or interview. I would go with it.

@BelacRLC - Nice jumping in with some “in character” response. I like it! And I can see where you are going with the crunch - that all sounds very reasonable.

@Robert Henry - I do like the concept. Could fit easily as the adventurer or sixth wheel, so if it came down to it, I would consider the same character for either role! I don’t see at this point that it will be an issue, though, so let’s proceed as if the adventurer role.

I know I said I would wait until April 15 for submissions, but honestly I am so happy with these concepts, I am inclined to go ahead and proceed. We have room for a couple of others, so if you read this and haven’t posted yet, go ahead an post a simple interest note so I know you are out there.

For a little more on the world events, I am thinking that the main Axis nation is Cheliax, and they have been expanding into Andoran (now occupied) after already basically invading the other countries surrounding them. Cheliax’s main ally is Rahadoum, which considers itself an equal partner, but clearly Cheliax is the prevailing force. Rahadoum had previously conquered Thuvia, and considers it now 1 country (although pockets of rebel forces still exist).

Varissa is also holding the line, but tensions are high. Taldor was considering a formal alliance with Andoran to start supplying troupes, but they delayed too long. Popular opinion varied between supporting the buffer and staying more isolationist, but troops are now stationed on their border. Qadira, for now, is trying to ignore the war, but are definitely concerned with the Cheliax invasions of Thuvia and Osirion, so they are in negotiations with Taldor for a more formal alliance. Despite the ancient history of Qadira and Taldor being at war, the last few hundred years have seen them as strong trade partners. Far away countries of the North have already pledged to support this alliance, assuming it formalizes.

Absalom has a strong Navy, but has shut itself off from most of the world and considers itself neutral. Much like Switzerland of our own history, their neutrality is generally respected. Banking is a key industry, there is still a variety of cultural influences from all sides within its borders.

Osirion is where we will be for this campaign. Forces from both sides exist, but Chelix is rather considered the law here. Cheliax has taken control through fear and manipulation rather than actual invasion or war, so with the Osirion government is still considered independent, clearly the Chelaxians are strongly influencing them. (Think Casablanca).

Also...Olivia, was it? I’m no more Shoanti than Yuan-ti. Lived among the primitives for a time—good folk, and hellish in a fight. None better to have at your back in a pinch. But I’m as blue a Varisian as yourself, under all this. Best not call me ‘gentleman,’ though. Haven’t been one of those in a long time.

Thank you GM! Glad you liked what I wrote up. I'm rearing to go, and start getting the crunch down, if you're able to get the build rules up and running!
A few questions I'd like to see answered before I get too far in the creation:
-Background Skills?
-Variant Multiclassing?
-Gun proficiencies?

Also, although you have said no house rules, I would like to make a brief case for EITR. Specifically, since there will be no or little magic, earlier/easier access to more varied combat maneuvers would differentiate things and make fighting scenes more entertaining.

Answers:

Why do you want to be considered?
The setting is what draws me most to the adventure, though the general theme also seems great. Indiana Jones was what really got me into history as a kid, so that really interests me too.
Which role do you want to submit for?
While the equipment manager interests me the most, the sidekick also seems like a fun character to play.
What would your basic crunch approach be (class, feats/weapons, etc). You won’t be locked into this - but just to get an idea of what you are thinking. Just want to know how you are going to make this yours.
For the equipment manager, I'd play a rogue, as suggested, using the smuggler archetype. I'd also specialize in social skills, linguistics and knowledge (local), essentially "knowing a guy" in every town. Think greeting a Katapeshi merchant in fluent Qadiran and, several cups of mint tea later, procuring a fantastically illegal/hard to find item through a network of contacts.
I've got less of a clear idea for the sidekick, but a bard specializing in perform (comedy) seems a good choice.
2e or 1e? Is your choice a preference or a deal breaker?
While I have a preference for 1e, 2e is also fine with me.
AP or small adventures? Or other ideas?
One of my favorite ways of games like this is a series of modules with an overarching plot, with threads from them all culminating in a climax where they all pay off.
Describe your character - what do you look like, what’s your personality? How would someone else describe your character?
Taahar ibn Alban al Kardaji, while charismatic, is still a shifty bastard, outwardly appearing to be entirely in it for themselves. He’s a Keleshite man just on the cusp of middle age with a short salt-and-pepper beard. His garb depends entirely where he is. He might wear a Taldan-style suit to secure a deal with an Oppara businessman but negotiations with a water lord in the Windswept Wastes might merit a traditional Keleshite kaftan. Despite his seemingly self-serving nature, he is incredibly loyal to those he works for or travels with. Lies are means to an end, but lying to those who rely on you is nothing but bad business.

Doing a quick poke in. I read the primary post but not the inbetween yet. but its already past my sleep time; and work tomorrow. So fast post to expand upon after reading more.

My stuff:

Why I want to be considered: Mostly because it sounds fun and weird. Though this answer will probably be better once I have a better idea things.

I am more interested in P2E. I haven't had much experience since playtest and a long steady game where it isn't grimdark or hyper serious sounds like a fun time. Not a deal breaker though. A preference. I'll just note p2e here for now. Mainly because P1 I know so much more about so I can't make any in the moment decisions; other than Occultist or alchemist Librarian is my bees knees love.

I think a small short adventure at first is good-something to make sure players jive with each other/gm. Or to avoid bad timezone situations concerning posting times. After that, series of small "jobs" is always fun because it switches up the style of game often. Which is good for pbp; APs are long running which can be even longer in PbP format.

Roles: Depends.. First instinct is Librarian. I am in fact a holder of Masters of Library and Info Science. I am an archivist right now (digital though)-I also know how to shoot due to my field of work~. I love how it sounds. I love knowledge/lore skills. I am less fond if the preconstruct forces it into the Face role...I've nevr really thought of that archetype from old movies to be charsima heavy I guess. Evvie (Mummy) is likable, but she isn't the witty charmer like others. I dont' really see Library funding requests as a socalite sort of thing. but I am biased by my own self
But if Librarian isn't forced into Socialite I'd quite enjoy it. Having social skills is fine, I'm just not the sort of player to be a "face" Plus I'm one in a different game. So again, bias there.

Equipment Manager This is also something I tend to enjoy a lot. I like being the "item guy" who tends to carry tools or items. Or makes the items in some cases.

Crunch: I'll have to relook things up as its been a while since I found a 2E game I was into. Sorry for the vague naming.
Librarian: I'd opt for an Alchemist who takes the archetype line that lets you identify creatures easier and give bonuses (chronicler I think? It also lets you make a book of identified things which is great flavor). I'd need to re-read things and see if there is a better method now though. I quite enjoyed alchemist when p2e came out but its been a while.
Gear Guy: I'd like to look at the invetor playtest, or investigator-which I haven't read yet.

Description. I'd honestly have to distil my vague ideas into more meaningful options to really figure that down.. Which if my initial thoughts sound appealing I'll happily do later this week when its not super late.

TLDR: I'm leaning to P2E-am fine with P1 just more involved in class/crunch goals due to wealth of choices. Librarian or Equipment Analyst/Specialist. Short mini adventure followed by multiple "jobs" once the group jives together. I have reservations about being a socalite or face though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So who is Cheliax now fighting? With Taldor being neutral (sort of) is it just Varissia?

This is just to sort the nations in my mind
Andoran is like France
Taldor, Spain or maybe central Europe?
Varissia is Russia (vast distances, lots of resistance)
Osirian is Eygpt (big surprise)
Rahadoum is Italy, with Thurvia Yugoslavia and/greece
Qadira...I'm thinking Turkey, but maybe America? It is really big.
Ustalov and the other northern nations are eastern Europe

These are only guesses, and obviously politically would be different to the real world (I don't think Varrisians are communists for example...although, maybe.)

By the way, Where eagles dare is a great movie, with so many twists at one point its like a cockscrew.

A cool concept from a proven GM? And Mummy's Mask, an AP that I've wanted to play for awhile but never got a chance to? Well, aside from there not being any dwarves, it's hard to say no! :)

This is Brannin Dowtry. A Veteran from Andoran and a survivor of the trenches. Joined the Army not by choice, but because it was that or jail. As it turns out, a life of petty crime and brawling can have significant consequences when you brawl with the wrong person. Became an artilleryman, working in a fire direction center where he spent his time in the war plotting fire missions and calculating altitude. The war for him ended when he survived when enemy artillery hit to his position. He survived thanks for him 'volunteering' for experimental medical treatment. Sure, half of his face is a mess of scars and his right "arm" is a miracle of alchemy, but he's alive! The same can't be said for those working with him, including the other volunteers. Survived and discharged. Given that he didn't want to voluntarily reenlist, nor was there anything to come home to, he's decided to come to Osirion, looking for work.

What's in the profile is, of course, subject to change. But it helped me get the character idea down.

I had been picturing Varisia as England - NW corner of the map, civilized later than the more ancient southern lands but featuring great mercantile cities, etc.

Hey you three, he said he was proceeding.

A lot of the things were talking about here were also touched on in discussion.

From what I can tell we still have two open spots the 'Sixth Wheel' and the 'Side Kick.'

I hope I am not too late to the party...

Questons:

Why do you want to be considered? I have been recently watching a lot of Bob Hope comedy movies from the 40's along with a lot of the movies mentioned.

Which role do you want to submit for? Mage

What would your basic crunch approach be (class, feats/weapons, etc). You won’t be locked into this - but just to get an idea of what you are thinking. Just want to know how you are going to make this yours.

I was thinking of a magician who got their start in vaudeville and is collecting magical tricks and oddities. Maybe some of the pathfinder spells could be chalked up to props, sleight of hand and hypnotism i.e. charm person, 'create' food & water. etc. If you do incorporate actual magic items into the mix, it could be some thing as simple as that cheap wand he bought at the run-down magic store is the real deal.

2e or 1e? Is your choice a preference or a deal breaker? 1e & not a deal breaker if not.

AP or small adventures? Or other ideas? AP's. Mummy's Mask would be perfect.

Describe your character - what do you look like, what’s your personality? How would someone else describe your character?

I can see him as a Professor Hinkle from Frosty the Snowman type character. Some tricks and props work while others he is always refining. He is the type of magician that whenever he meets someone new will 'pull' a coin out of their ear.

For all who missed it: We are set now on 1e and Mummy's Mask. The early responses were pretty overwhelming in this direction.

@Bricone - I think I see where you're going, but it feels like it would be tricky to keep it in bounds, so I am going to say no to Mage. It really just doesn't fit with what I am going for right now. Maybe as a mid-season replacement character...

Country-wise, you all are right on track, but like I said, I am not locking into 1:1 replacements. I don't want to insult anyone by picking a wrong choice for their country...

@zwordsman - give it some more thought with an eye towards 1e and that librarian and equipment manager roles are already filled. A tinkerer could be a great sidekick, though - especially if you want to avoid being socially skilled. Alchemist or investigator would probably work well.

@simeon - a smuggler type could be good, although I think it might be a little too close to what @chillblame is already working with. But I could see both playing a role here... if you want to try nailing it down a little more (both of you) we can see if there is too much overlap and discuss options. But maybe if we tweak it more in the sidekick direction...

Ah, damn, didn’t realize I was overlapping with chillblame on the equipment manager role. If chillblame’s willing to go for sidekick over equipment manager, Taahar could stay the same. Otherwise he’ll need some tweaking.

Fuzzfoot, how would you feel about the Sixth Wheel being more of a negotiator/local liaison? Someone like Sallah from Indiana Jones, where they aren’t necessarily the driver but they’re the one who knows the person who can get the party where they need to be, and working with the equipment manager to set up contacts. If that’s acceptable, I think I’d go for that as the other role.

Ah, my young apprentice, let me teach you the dark side...sorry wrong genre :)
A sidekick for my character could definitely work. I could add a Fagin element for my character, greedy but protective of his charges.

Cool! I'm happy to specialize my character a bit so we overlap less, what with both being rogues. That said, having a sneak attack partner is always a nice thing to have.

Lucian is a slayer as well, so plenty of opportunity :)

So I am thinking of the character. Rogue, underground chemist and/or gun smuggler. Feats are point-blank shot and persuasive, thus far. Gunsmithing as a bonus feat.

gun smuggler

underground chemist

Anyways, a couple of questions

Can we use the unchained characters?

Have you decided on the character points?

Are we in an army? or Mercenaries?

@chillblame - Yes, unchained is fine. And those archetypes look good, and I think are fine on top of UC Rogue.

@Simeon - yes, the local liason direction makes good sense to me.

I think we decided on 15 for initial build.

You are not, as a group, part of any army. The basic initial premise will be that the librarian has been tasked with researching a tomb that locals have recently discovered, and you know you may not be the only ones in search of lost treasures.

If you would like your background to include military service, go ahead.

Regarding EITR - I would prefer not to use it. But remember, with Guns are Everywhere, guns are considered Simple weapons, meaning basically everyone can use them without needing an extra proficiency. Likewise, unless you are planning to build your own guns, Gunsmithing isn't strictly necessary either, but could come in handy with cleaning, repairs, etc. if that's where you want to go.

Ammo is 10% listed cost for everyone. If you do take Gunsmithing, I will say you can make your own ammo for 10% of that (basically free).

cool

Grand Lodge

dotting for interest

Totally fine with no Eitr--I've gotten decently far in figuring out how to minimize the feat taxes. My concern was less on guns than on all the different Improved X feats required for disarming/tricks/tripping/etc.

As is, my class levels will be a mixture TBD of uBarb(Untamed Rager), uRogue(Thug), Fighter, and Brawler, starting mainly with the first two.

For flavor, I was thinking I'd come from the same country as Olivia (wouldn't have to be Varisia, though I like the idea of having covered up some battle scars with Shoanti tattoos). She'd be even fancier than my family, though maybe only by marriage, but there'd be that bit of potential recognition there.

@GM, since chillblame is taking sidekick I'll be sticking with equipment manager. The local liason had been a part of my concept since the beginning, but I'll be adding a somewhat criminal element to it as well.

I'm not taking a sidekick. I am training a sidekick. Tis different.

In other words I want the equipment manager. Sorry if I caused a misunderstanding

@GM Fuzzfoot: Yes - Keep me in mind as a replacement character!

@Briccone - will do!

@Everyone - looks like we are certainly getting some traction. I am watching Where Eagles Dare right now!

Did you enjoy it? Very twisty at one point, and good action

gone a bit quiet
