Brannin Dowtry |

Brannin breathed deeply, his right eye twitching. It was hard to think when he was 'juiced up.' There was also no way of ending it until it ran it's course. With great care he said "The bones break like any other, magic, science or alchemy. Let's push on."

GM Fuzzfoot |

It is dimly lit, since there is light coming in from the open doors behind you as well as ligh from up ahead.
A tiled walkway surrounds a square patch of earth and sand in this high atrium. A balcony on the second floor overlooks the courtyard, and a square hole in the ceiling opens to the sky. Four columns in the corners of the atrium support the roof above, and the walls are decorated with symbols and hieroglyphs depicting animals, celestial creatures, and the sun and moon.
Rising from the middle of the sand, you see a statue of a woman form in front of you. "Who are you? Why have you come here?" it asks.

Lucian Brachtarna |
is she speaking in modern language?
'Who am I? who are you lady? You just formed out of sand.' Startled Lucian's eyes widen at the talking statue. 'Stay calm, stay the hell's calm.' Swallowing, "I'm Lucian Brachtarna." He gives a general waive at the team with one hand as he nervously holds his 'walking stick' in the other. "We're an archeology team hired by a Library. The Knights of Pharasma, assigned us this site for exploration."

GM Fuzzfoot |

Oddly enough, it does seem to be a broken form of the common tongue.
"My name is Heshsharu, spirit guardian of this establishment. I get so few visitors here. Tell me, Lucian Bractarna, who are these Knights of Pharasma? And what is an archeology?"

Lucian Brachtarna |
'Spirit Guardian?' Looking back towards the others, Lucians eyes the sign of saucers, his facial expression clearly not comfortable. he turns back, [b ]"Greetings Heshsharu, please forgive my confusion. I've never met a spirit guardian." He pulls on his collar. "Most folks these days would not believe such thing exist."[/b He gives an honest shrug. "The Knights of Pharasma are and old group, I believe centuries ago it had something to do with religion. They are the ones who have been given the responsibility to determine which archeologists investigate which buildings or tombs in the necropolis."
He gestures back the way they came towards the city. "Most records about this city have been lost. Archeology is the study of ancient places and artifacts." He gestures towards Olivia, "We were hired by Olivia's library to help her learn about this place." He pauses, feeling very inadequate to be speaking with a spirit. "Heshsharu can you share with us." He looks from the sprit back to the others. "Not to be rude, but how do you even exist? Is it magic? What tied your spirit to this place?"
I couldn't find the name or location of the library Olivia worked for

Edgar Vrinn |

Edgar sidles up to Lucian, then looks at the statue. Ask it not to send stuff to kill us, he whispers, looking around suspiciously. Any moment now, or if we say the wrong things, those animal pictures are going to leap out of the walls and come after us.

GM Fuzzfoot |

"Ancient? I suppose I don't notice time the way you do. It seems strange to me that people forget things that are right here. How do you exist? How many centuries do you live? What other forms can you take?"

Lucian Brachtarna |
'Is she asking me or was that rhetorical?' Scratching his head, Lucian looks at the others, very confused. Shrugging, "Well, a lot has been forgotten. That's why were here, to learn. As the buildings guardian, do you mind if we remove artifacts that will help us understand our history and let us be able to afford to continue our work?"

GM Fuzzfoot |

"You want to take from ME?!? Perhaps now I will take from YOU!"

Lucian Brachtarna |
"Take? Blast!" Realizing a fight was coming and wanting to get in the way of the guns, Lucian steps towards the side of the sandman. Grasping his 'walking stick' in both hands he swings it at the spirit. "We really should have just talked!" Clearly shaken, he misses the sand creature.
move action, Lucians movement is 30 ft, he moved around to the side to attack, the spirit isn't on the map, but I figure 30 ft is enough space to not give up an AOO. Attack greatclub

Pumped full of combat drugs and adrenaline, it did not take much for Brannin to be pushed into action. Not even bothering to shoot his gun, he charged in with mental fist raised.

Edgar Vrinn |

Sorry for absence, my kid is home in quarantine and needs to use my computer for Zoom.
Edgar, enraged, lashes out with his light mace, but sand is a tricky thing to break even with a solid hit.
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

GM Fuzzfoot |

If only Lucien had hit...
Between Cardshark's bullet, and Brannin and Edgar hitting it with solid blows, the sandman practically falls apart. He disappears into the ground.
Party's up!

Lucian Brachtarna |
Stepping back from the area where the sand creature appeared, Lucian dropped his 'walking stick' and drew his broom-handle. "We really don't have to kill each other, it's not like it sounds. If you're interested, we could move you and everything here to a museum. You could spend all day telling everyone about all of it." His hand on the trigger Lucian waits to see of the sandman attacks again.

Edgar Vrinn |

As the sand creature drops, Edgar also seems to slump, coming out of his rage and into a funk. Why is everything everywhere trying to kill me? he mutters. In his mind, he's back at the ambush in the desert.
The truck overturns, sending the dead driver sprawling, but this time he's a zombie and lunges at Edgar's throat. Edgar desperately tries to free himself from the wreckage and find something to beat the zombie away.
In the real world, he cringes a moment and then leans against the wall, breathing heavily.

Brannin Dowtry |

Brannin nodded, though it was jerky. ”It’s the arm.” He said. ”It’s part of me. And in times of danger it can pump me full of adrenaline and…the like. It makes concentrating really hard. But I’ll try.” Get it together. He admonished himself. Edgar didn’t look all too hot either. It wasn’t just the arm. This place felt wrong in a superstitious way…

GM Fuzzfoot |

It seems to stay quiet. You all stand ready for a few minutes, but perhaps the creature is afraid to show itself.

Lucian Brachtarna |
Standing there by the sand pit for a moment longer, Lucian eyes shift from the sand pit to Branning, then to Cardsharp as he tries to calm the old soldier. Raising an eye brow as Edgar looks fatigued but asks why everything was trying to kill them. Turning as Branning explains how his prosthetic works, Lucian is amazed that the others are taking the experience so well. Wiping the sweat off his brow with his lift arm, he asks"You guys heard that thing talking right? I wasn't just me?"
Shaking his head, he gestures towards the double doors towards the west. He begins to move towards the doors, but this time he keeps the pistol out. "Lets keep exploring."
As he moves he asks the librarian. "The clock work toys was one thing. Walking skeletons and a sand man? That's a whole other level of crazy. So in these history books of yours, did these people claim to use magic or something?"
Stopping at the double doors, he checks them carefully for any traps or locks, asking over his shoulder, "What do you think Cardshark, look safe to you?"

"Well, there are stories, of course... but nothing anyone believes to be true. I wonder, though... I mean, certainly we have seen some things we can't explain! Let's keep looking. Maybe we will find some clues."

Brannin Dowtry |

”Maybe…maybe magic is just another force, like…uhm, electricity. If that makes sense? We can’t see electricity, but it’s natural. It could just mean that this is a power source understood back then that has been lost.” Brannin offered, feeling very foolish saying it.

Lucian Brachtarna |
As Lucian inspected to door, he listened to Olivia's and Brannin's conversation. Not finding anything worth noting on the door, "Stories or not, there's clearly something going on we don't understand." As he turns the latch on the ancient door. "And if it's another 'force' we should probably learn more about it, so we can learn how to deal with it or even learn how to use." As he opens this door, he leads with the mauser, intent on shooting first and asking question later.

Edgar Vrinn |

Edgar shakes himself back to reality and, seeing the group ready to move on, again takes his position at Lucian's shoulder, mace in hand and a grim look on his face.
If we find out how it works, let's keep that away from the Chelaxians, no?

GM Fuzzfoot |

Assuming Cardshark also checked...
The doors do not appear trapped. You open and fine more "outside" space.
The western side of the estate forms an L-shaped yard mostly given to sand, sun-dried earth, and the ancient husks of dead trees. Stone benches line the walls of the yard, and a large tiled pool sits in the southwest corner, dried and partially filled with sand. A short flight of steps leads between a pair of pillars to a set of stone doors in the west side of the house (which you just looked through). At the north end of the yard stands a squat stone building with columns at every corner.
Suddenly, out of the dried "pool", a giant whiptail centipede comes scurrying out, clearly sensing a fresh meal.

I assume since Lucian rolled highest in initiative that you don't mind if I take an action.
Walking out into the courtyard, Lucian sees the exterior, he gestures towards the north then pointing towards the south, "They have a very fancy wood shed and a p... giant bug!" Raising the mauser to shoulder height he points it a the large centipede and squeezes the trigger.

It's as big as a house." Attempting to draw the thing away from the downed Brannin, Lucian takes another step back, just as Edgar rushes in and attacks. Seeing the creature react to him Lucian calls out. "Good job Edgar I think you have it's attention!" Seeing the large bug maul, Edgar, Lucian begins to worry about everyone living through this fight. Moving back another step, he calls out. "I'll try and draw it between the two buildings." Hearing Brannin gurgling, Lucian hopes it's not a death rattle. Aiming his Mauser at the giant caterpillar head, he fires the pistol, trying to be light.
