Are there any archers near Brebork? Is Quzman nearby with his bow? Brebork is thinking of using Guidance to aid a shooter.
The archer brothers come running up and are near Brebork, but they are afraid to shoot the vulture and be the first ones to injure it, fearing retaliation.
Quzman is maybe 20 feet in front of Brebork and has a bow slung across his back.
The_Gnoll_DM |
Waited long enough for Quzman
Quzman thought:Poor foolish Ute, you should never let your guard down, especially in the desert, life had taught him this. But he deserved better.
Quzman delays until Brebork can cast his spell (placing his initiative at 7) and then powered by the might of Sarenrae and armed with his shortbow, shoots at the vulture, catching it in the chest. The bird squawks in pain, looking up from its meal.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Armed with courage at Quzman's attack, the archer brothers unleash their arrows as well, with one of them catching the bird in the wing, causing it great pain.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 miss
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
The_Gnoll_DM |
The vulture was angered now, that its meal had been interrupted. It stood up on its spindly legs and charged at Quzman, rearing its head back to bite him with its beak and connecting, nearly biting him two, and ripping a huge amount of flesh out, causing Quzman to bleed profusely. Ute's fellow mercenaries, who were coming to avenge their friend's death, quickly fled back at seeing the bird's powerful attack on Quzman.
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Brebork |
Borzig Ghazhaz!* This is one huge and fell beast! We must destroy it right away before it attacks again!
If, after Dumah's action, the beast looks like it is still strong, Brebork will pray for a more potent blessing in the hopes of stopping it before it kills someone!
Quzman Garhani |
Waited long enough for Quzman
Sorry, I was ill the last couple of days and didn't get a chance to even power up the computer yesterday. Thank you for making his move.
Quzman lets out a yell of pain as the vulture digs into his side. Nearly staggered, he takes a 5' step back out the danger zone of the beast and shoots his bow at the overly large bird again.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Eli Wynnstock |
Now that he is behind the beastly bird, Eli leaps into to attack with his rapier opposite of Quzman. "Let's fix us up some shish-ka-bird!"
Attack Roll w/flank and bless 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Damage w/sneak attack 1d6 - 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) - 1 + (3) = 8
Check for Critical 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Additional Critical Damage 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
The_Gnoll_DM |
Actually, the bless does come into effect until round 2, but it does not change the result
Summary of Round 1
22- Dumah (delays)
8- Jarva (cast produce flame)
7- Brebork (moved and cast guidance on Quzman)
7- Quzman (shot and wounded vulture)
7- Archers (shot two arrows, one hit bird)
5- Vulture (charged and almost bit Quzman in two)
5- Eli (flanked and stabbed vulture, causing it to squawk in pain)
Round 2
22- Dumah (delays)
8- Jarva (threw flame at vulture but missed)
7- Brebork (cast Bless defensively to give Eli the flank)(1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6; failure, loses spell, no spell effect.
7- Quzman (stepped back and shot arrow and missed)
7- Archers
5- Vulture
5- Eli
Archers shoot arrows again, and again one arrow hits the vulture, grazing it.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Brebork |
Sorry, I don't understand how the spell looses it's effect or is cast defensively? I thought it gives all allies +1 on all attack rolls for a full minute. How does that effect Eli's flank attack. Just wondering?

** spoiler omitted **
It seems that the DM has moved you up next to the vulture into melee range so that I would get the +2 flanking bonus. That would require you to make a check to avoid the spell or take an attack of opportunity. I miss read and thought Quzman was attacking it in melee not by bow. So I wouldn't have gotten a flanking bonus on my roll. As he pointed out I didnt need the bonus from bless , I also didn't need the bonus from the flank I rolled a natural 20. With out the bonuses my crit attempt is still a 17. If that misses I only miss out on one additional point of damage. I dont see why Brebork needed to be moved into a position that would force him to have a chance to loose the spell when logically he would have stayed back by Quzman to cast it.
The_Gnoll_DM |
Ok Brebork and Eli, I will try and explain. Initially, Brebork moved up next to Quzman, cast guidance and Quzman shot creature. Next creature charged up to Quzman and was now in melee range with both Quzman and Brebork. Quzman does not threaten creature with bow in his hand. However, Brebork does with his spear. Thus, Eli moved in and flanked and could sneak attack creature, which he did. That was all Round 1.
Round 2, Quzman takes a 5' step back and shot. In order for Eli to be able to sneak attack this round, Brebork would have to stay in his current spot in melee range with the creature, threatening him. He has the option of taking a 5' step back as well and casting bless but then on Eli's turn, no +2 flank and no sneak attack, because no one threatens the other creature other than Eli. If Brebork prefers the bless spell, then we can retcon and have him take the 5' step and then cast. Let me know.
Brebork |
Thanks for the clarification, DM. Considering the size of the creature, Brebork is convinced (rightly or wrongly) that the best chance for success will be if he casts Bless so that multiple allies will get a boost for a while and the archers will be emboldened to stay and fight. He would not choose to stand in a position to allow the creature to disrupt the spell if he could help it, even if it opened up a flanking opportunity for Eli (sorry Eli - maybe next round). Brebork will take the 5' step backwards before casting the spell.
btw...This brings some questions to mind about combat, tactics and game etiquette in PbP for the ooc thread, which I will post soon. Thanks again.
The_Gnoll_DM |
Thanks TDL. No problem, Brebork casts bless and the power of his goddess fills everyone's spirit. Everyone has +1 to hit. Now back to the combat...
As Eli's swing just cut it deeply, the giant vulture spins around, and attempts to bite him, but Eli skillfully avoids the clumsy attack.
Attack:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Eli is up and then top of the round
Eli Wynnstock |
Thanks for the clear up, I didn't notice the notation of the Vulture charging to attack. I must skip over some of the notation type stuff since I am looking for it in a story description box. So Eli only did 5 maybe 6 points of damage. No flank so no sneak attack damage. 6 points if it was a critical.
Eli dodges out of the way of the vultures vicious beak and stabs again at the giant bird. "Keep those arrows coming boys, Quzman close in on it so we can squash this buzzard."
Attack roll w/bless 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage roll 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Check for critical hit 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Additional critical damage 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
LOL, 2 critical hits in a row and I still do 6 pts of damage each time. :}
The_Gnoll_DM |
Don't sell yourself short, Eli, you've done 15 points of damage in 2 rounds with 2 criticals (you forgot sneak attack on 1st round)! Great rolls!
Round 2 Summary:
22- Dumah (shot a force missile at it)
8- Jarva (threw flame at vulture but missed)
7- Brebork (5' step back, cast Bless)
7- Quzman (stepped back and shot arrow and missed)
7- Archers (shot 2 arrows, 1 hit)
5- Vulture (attempted to bite Eli but missed)
5- Eli (Eli takes advantage and slashes the bird across its wiry neck)
The vulture is bleeding profusely now from Eli's rapier, arrows, and force missiles.
Round 3
22- Dumah
8- Jarva
7- Brebork
7- Quzman
7- Archers
5- Vulture
5- Eli
Post actions please

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 (-1 buckler, +1 bless) 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10damage
The_Gnoll_DM |
With the vulture severely wounded, it attempts to flee and fly away, but at that moment a force missile followed by a ball of hot sand slam into its back, knocking it to the ground. As it attempts to get up, Brebork's spear punctures its neck, decapitating the vulture, as its body falls in a bloody mess. The crowd of onlookers, all safely 40' behind the party, break into a cheer and admiration for their powerful warriors. Ute's fellow mercenaries look in shame due to their cowardice, as they move forward to get his body.
Great job, guys. I was worried about that encounter but you guys wiped the floor with it. 200 xp each!
Eli Wynnstock |
Eli wipes the sweat from his brow as he walks away from the dead monstrosity. He goes over to Ute's body kneels down to see if there is any chance to save the warrior. "Too many have died this week," he says to no one in particular.
Heal check to stabilize 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
The_Gnoll_DM |
Eli can tell by the position of Ute's neck that he will be sleeping a long long time. Garavel approaches the party, heavy crossbow in hand. "Nice job, fellas, big freaking bird that one. Odd that a vulture, a carrion bird, attack us, in broad daylight, huh? Well, I see the teamwork is quite evident, you work well together. And noble, quite fancy with the blade I'm told, and quite agile evading its bite. Nicely done. Well, someone should heal Quzman, it looks like he might faint and bleed to death at any moment", he says, looking at Brebork. "And then, you've got work to do, because that monastery is not clearing itself out!" With that, Garavel walks away and ushers everyone back to their duties.
Eli Wynnstock |
As everyone starts back to their duties Eli approaches one of the body guards, "It's Flynn right? Ute was a good man and he didn't deserve to die the meal of some mutant carrion bird. Come, let us bury his remains and honor his life as you tell me about his victories as a warrior." Eli will acquire a shovel from the pack camel and return to where Ute's remains lay cast aside and begin to dig a grave.
Quzman Garhani |
Quzman will try and staunch the wound the best he can with what he has on hand.
Heal check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
After this, he will go over to where Eli is preparing to dig a grave for Ute. "I do not know as I can dig very much with this wound, but I will aid the best I can."
Brebork |
It's nice to see you guys working on your characters' healing skills while I was away. Good work!
Brebork shakes his head when he sees the broken body of the guard...and is uncharacteristically silent and withdrawn. He looks angry with himself. He marches over to Quzman and reaches his hand out to the wounds.
Do we have any potions left?
I think I must pray for you, friend. Or should we use one of our remaining potions first and save my prayers for later as needed? I have used a powerful spell already today..perhaps another less powerful may have sufficed. It is hard to say, but we need to use healing wisely from here on in....I see your wound is very serious. I shall pray for you...
If you don't mind, Quzman. Positive Energy is most effective when healing several people at once...let us see if we get more out of the magic later. Will you be OK for now?
Brebork |
Oh What am I thinking Brebork says to himself quietly. Quzman is our warrior. He risks life and limb as a matter of routine! No need to be stingy...
Channel one more time 1d6 ⇒ 3 now he's at 16...one short of full!
5 channels left.
Brebork assists with the burial and asks Flynn and Ute's aother companions if they wish for him to pray alongside them for their fallen comrade.
Quzman Garhani |
"My thanks Brebork. It is truly a gift of the gods you possess. Also, you know your powers, and their limitations, much better than I. While I appreciate all the favors you bestow on me, they are most definitely yours to grant as your wisdom dictates. Now, let us see to granting this fallen warrior as proper a burial as possible out here in the desert wilds."
I had had but the single CLW potion from earlier, and it was used in the aftermath of the Bandit fight.
Jarva bin-Stavain |
"Oh, I had forgotten, Quzman. Here is an extra potion of healing I found." Jarva didn't tell Quzman that the potion was taken from Kyra, after the Boss had done his dirty work. That was a factoid Quzman didn't need to know.
Write a potion of Cure Light Wounds down for your sheet, Quzman, and I removed it from Jarva's.
The_Gnoll_DM |
With so many people assisting, Ute is buried in about an hour and a half. After the sweaty work, the party is brought waterskins to quench their thirst. After a short meal consisting of dates and fruit, the party whisks along to the monastery, ready to complete its search of the place. Do not feel rushed, feel free to rp if you want
You find the monastery as you left it. No tracks are seen anywhere in the area.
To refresh the party's memory: Monastery
Let me know how you proceed
Brebork |
You know your powers, and their limitations, much better than I. While I appreciate all the favors you bestow on me, they are most definitely yours to grant as your wisdom dictates
Alas, Quzman, knowing the limitations of my power means I face difficult choices every time I use it. I used a conserable portion of my power combatting that bird. Yet hardly any of that Blessing was needed or used at the time. Using the blessing of the Dawnflower to heal you was an easier choice to make. Aside from the terrible loss of Ute, that fight with the vulture cost us dearly by using up magical resources. But I did learn a lesson today. I learned how a long spear can be used effectively in combat to stay defended from a distance while preparing a flank for an ally. That's something to remember.
Eli Wynnstock |
Eli stares at the decaying building for a long while thinking about Kyra and swallows hard. After a few moments he shakes off his distant stare and says, "Well gang, we're back. Where should we start, the funky mold, the ancient statue, or the bandits barricades? Samir, Amir, what can you tell us about the barricades? Think about it for a moment since I know that the bandit scouted the area and you just boarded it over and stayed out. Did you hear anything beyond the barricades, did the Bandit say anything at all they might indicate what he didn't want you to see?"
Quzman Garhani |
The order is fine to me.
Quzman will examine and listen at barricade before he begins to pull the barricade down. He is starting with the barricade in the main columned hall that is closest to the sleeping quarters, unless someone prefers another entryway first
Perception(search): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Perception(listen): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
STR check (if needed for the barricade): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
When the entry is clear enough for the party to gain access, Quzman grimly pulls out his scimitar and mace and slowly steps into the opened hallway.
Eli Wynnstock |
Eli avoids looking at the place where Kyra met her end at the Bandits hand and focuses on the task at hand. "Everyone keep alert, we don't know what sort of creature the Bandit was afraid of." He checks to make sure that he still can quickly reach Zastorn's healing potion. Dawing his rapier he prepares pass the broken down barricade watching and listening for any signs of danger.
Perception Check 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
