As the pit opens, both men jump to the side! The thug gets stuck, but the other man advances a bit. Neither is truly safe though as they're both scrabbling to get completely clear from the lip.

I'm going to rule that the quantity of crap in the pit makes climbing out a bit easier (as a balance for the extra damage.)

"Masterfully done, everyone!" Xavien cries with delight. He plunges his blade into a nearby barrel for safekeeping, and dismisses his disguise. "That went quite smoothly, I dare say. Leo, let me see that cut."

He taps a wand to Leo's side a number of times. It fizzles once, then again, then finally offers some stronger stuff. The burns fade away on the swordsman's skin, and the gashes close. Leo is at 25/31 now.
"Shall we find our friend?" Xavien retrieves his own sword from the trusty barrel and heads for the stairs, which he inspects thoroughly before ascending.

With the pits gone and the party healed, Xavien checks the northern stairs. They're completely safe, and the door to the room above is ajar. Two metal pipes ascend through the northwest and southwest corners of this room. A viewing window overlooks the warehouse floor to the west. An oak desk occupies the eastern side of the chamber, backed by an intimidating chair. An open door the south reveals an unused and empty storage closet, while the northern door exits to a flight of stairs.
