The missive from Venture-Captain Amara Li was clear, and comes to mind as the skyline of Korvosa rises into view over the calm waters of Conqueror’s Bay in southern Varisia.

“Recently the Society acquired a new ally in Absalom named Sendeli Foxglove. Now she has made something of a personal request. Sendeli has a sister named Zeeva in Korvosa who owns a successful marketplace. A competing business interest is threatening Lady Foxglove, and her sister requests the Society investigate and intervene.

“If you consider the matter pedestrian and more suited toward the local constabulary, I wouldn’t blame you. Even so, there are extenuating circumstances. First, the competing business interest is the Aspis Consortium. It makes little sense for them to harass a local greengrocer, so there must be a deeper layer to this. Maintaining close ties to Sendeli Foxglove is an agenda the Society feels is worth pursuing in and of itself, but if we can assist Zeeva while also hampering the Aspis Consortium’s efforts to gain influence in Korvosa, all the better.

“There is smoke here, now find the fire. Extricate Zeeva Foxglove from this feud with the Consortium. If she’s anything like her sister, she’ll want to be an active part of this team—but you are not to let her put herself in danger. We’ve made that clear to her, and you’re expected to abide by it and ensure she does as well. If this matter is simply crooked business, then just resolve it and continue on to Magnimar where Venture-Captain Heidmarch will surely have more in store for you.”

To clarify: Amara Li just sent you guys messages. She didn't actually do a briefing in person so is not available to answer any questions. To Kal'Ryon's point, it's important enough to send you guys but not important enough for her to tell you about it in person.

Arriving in Korvosa, you learn that the Green Market is in the South Shore district. Once you get there, it is easy to find directions to the market.

The Green Market is a mostly wooden structure built like a massive barn. It stands on a flattened section of raised earth five feet higher than the surrounding street. The structure is only a single story, but the ceiling rises to twenty-five feet and has numerous glass skylights that can be opened and closed with extending poles and ladders for lighting and ventilation. To the East is the main entrance that has large iron gates which can be slid and chained shut. On the northeast and southeast sides are exterior docks with sliding bay doors, where farmers and merchants can unload the wares from their wagons directly into stalls or bring them into interior kiosks. Inside, the majority of the ground is hard-packed earth, except for the stalls, which have wood flooring. Only the four northeastern stalls carry goods other than produce. The eastern-most stall has casks of wine, oils, and vinegar. The other stalls sell quality clothing, jewelry, and finished furniture. On the northwest side is an office that can be secured by another sliding iron gate. West of the office is the market’s back entrance. Finally, in the center west is a park-like area with a large tree and flowered bushes kept alive by an open skylight above.

When the group arrives, the market is bustling with life and commerce as merchants sell their wares and chat with their customers. Men and women do their daily grocery shopping while children run around playing and laughing.

Diazepane follows, looking a the local produce and asking vendors why it's called the Green Market.

Ruby Phoenix Tournament Games I've Played (Session Tracker)

"Ha! I don't know. No one's ever mentioned why they call it the Green Market," a smiling man with a bald pate, shaggy beard and spare frame replies to Diazepane's question.

It requires a Knowledge (Local) or Diplomacy check to find Zeeva.

Also, you can gather information as below -

Green Market (Diplomacy or Knowledge (Local)

DC15+:
Zeeva Foxglove is the second owner of the Green Market. Both occasions it has been open, the business was always popular and successful.

20+:
The previous owner died, closing the doors roughly ten years ago. His death was unexpected and sudden. Oddly, at no time has any owner of the Green Market failed to show at least a fair profit.

25+:
The previous owner’s death was mysterious—a wasting disease struck quickly, without warning or discernable cause, and never spread. Local farmers and craftsmen believe the market is otherwise lucky, but they don’t discuss its history openly.

30+:
The Green Market was built on or near a site of importance to the Shoanti. Not as significant as the Grand Mastaba, but nevertheless still considered sacred.

Zeeva Foxglove (Diplomacy or Knowledge (Local)

10+:
Her reputation in the local community is solid. Her business dealings have always been fair, despite always being lucrative.

15+:
She was brought to Korvosa from Magnimar as a child. She is technically nobility in Magnimar, but she has no connection to it, and she lays no claim to a noble title in Korvosa.

20+:
Orphaned after her parents died tragically, Zeeva and her siblings were raised by a distant cousin in Korvosa. Her sister Sendeli now lives in Absalom, and her estranged brother Aldern returned to Magnimar. Zeeva sold her portion of her inheritance to buy the Green Market, and so far it has been a good investment.

25+:
Some suspect Zeeva is a witch, but a good one who is willing to use her powers to help her neighbors.

As the group compares notes and asks around, one of the merchants nods across the way. "If you want to know about the Green Market, or Zeeva, why don't you ask her, yourselves?"

Following the direction of the nod, you see a stunning woman with chin-length, strawberry blonde hair, wide brown eyes, and a generous smile. She carries no weapons and wears no armor. A sleek, black cat rubs itself against her ankle.

As you watch, she finishes a conversation with one vendor passing her a coin and taking an apple before moving on to the next stall and starting to chat with both the vendor and a customer.

Aw man...stupid forum ate my post. Here we go again.

Zeeva's seemingly ever present smile does not falter when the Pathfinders present themselves, though her brow furrows in concentration as she mentally switches from the calm, happy commerce around her to the darker subject which brought them here.

Her eyes widen and she nods when she's on the right mental track.

“Thank you so much for coming. I can’t tell you how much this means to me. I’ve complained to the city, but it’s as if the Aspis Consortium has bribed everyone or the authorities just don’t care. I’m happy to pay for your lodging while you’re helping me. If you like, I can show you around the market and answer any questions about anything you haven’t already been told.”

She's true to her word and will take you around introducing you to each vendor and most of the customers, who seem to be regulars while answering any questions.

Zeeva shrugs in response to Mylvwara's question. "I suppose I don't. But even if I did know the source of this place's good luck, there's no guarantee that I'd be able to influence it, in any case. If my luck runs out, I will be thankful for the time when I had it."

"It is a percentage of transactions," she explains to Diazepane. "That way, I'm as encouraged to make this place as successful as the vendors are."

"Try one of these oranges. They're the perfect mix of sweet and tangy," she tells Valeros, handing a copper over to the vendor and handing the fighter one while she takes one for herself.

She is drawn up short by Ichio's remarks.

Ruby Phoenix Tournament Games I've Played (Session Tracker)

Both of Diazepane's bombs hit, the sound of moisture in the air crackling to ice filling the air. The leader is caught completely off guard and takes full damage from both hits and is staggered by the cold. The magenta garbed man is able to avoid the worst of the splash but is also staggered.

"M-m-m-my...aren't you the d-d-d-dangerous one?" the leader says to Diazepane, followed by arcane gestures and words.

And those arcane gestures and words are followed by: "Sit down with your hands clasped in your lap until you can't see any of us anymore."

The thugs all throw off their cloaks and draw bows and arrows, launching the missiles at Valeros and Kal'Ryon, respectively, though the one hit by Diazepane's bomb can't get his fingers to work well enough to knock the arrow and draw.

The one aimed at Valeros flies wide but hits a fleeing customer. It bursts into a flash of white energy and the woman falls to the ground asleep.

The one directed at Kal'Ryon hits only because he wasn't quite ready and he also gets very sleepy.

Heh...because I put "Green" in the title of the Campaign, it looks like all my text is going to be green.

I don't know if that will be true for you guys, as well.

I have not heard back from Grimdog in a bit. I'm inclined to wait a bit more before looking for a replacement (maybe beginning Friday?) but I'm open to discussion. Do we want to look faster...do we want to not worry and proceed with only 5 if he doesn't join us?

I'm fine waiting for grimdog, past Friday if necessary. I'm also fine starting with 5, expecting he'll join before we get too far.

I also updated this spreadsheet for reporting.

If everyone can fill it out at their leisure we can save ourselves the "provide me this information" message at the end of the scenario and, because we're mostly keeping the same players and characters, you shouldn't have to edit too much from session to session.

It is considered light armor and allows the wearer to use fly on command (as the spell) once per day.

Of course. You can always assume that a week or more passes between our adventures (except maybe the last two.)

You have plenty of time to buy whatever you want in the downtime between.

I thought this group would be a good place to ask for advice on a new character.

I have a PC who I have brought over to PFS from a Curse of the Crimson Throne game that I left.
She is a human Varisian cleric of Desna. I'm really happy with her.

She came to Absalom with her ward, a teenage orphan who she had been trying to find a foster family, until he was abducted by a Fagin-type character and forced to work as a pickpocket.

She has brought him with her so that he cannot bump into people who know him as a criminal, to give him a fresh start.

I am planning to have him follow her adventurous ways and join the society.

I am left in need of a class to go with my concept: a vulnerable young kid who lost his parents and spent a period as a pickpocket. He's spent several years (post bereavement and post-rescue) living with a cleric of Desna and helping at the temple.

I don't know where to go with him. Any ideas?

I've just given that a look. It's a bit bland.

I've never played a rogue before, so maybe I'm not seeing the potential.

Male Human NG fighter 7, HP 74/74, AC 24, T 15, FF 20, F +8, R +6, W +4(+2 vs fear), Perc +0, Init +7

yeah, i know what you mean. i almost never played a rogue before. my=-1 is a unchained rogue/slayer/brawler build...he's actually pretty good in combat...and has skills out the wazoo. I was thinking that archetype because of the synergy between the church and a rogue..

Silver Crusade

Ruby Phoenix Tournament | NG male (he/him) human (Varisian) alchemist 12 | AC 26 (T 15, FF 22) | HP 111/111 | P +20, I +4 | F +14 (+16 vs poison), R +15, W +10 | Bombs: 22/22, Fly: 12/12, Clover: 3/3 | Active Conditions: ant haul

I don't think the church/rogue thing needs to be so direct, it could be that the character reacts badly to the church over time, and becomes anti-church/rogue (either relapsing into old habits, or even developing new bad habits); alternatively, the character could really take to the church and go church/anti-rogue (some type of lawful neutral overreacter to petty crime).

I have zero suggestions on classes, if you couldn't tell, my PFS1 characters are all kind of bland. If I had to make another PFS1 character, I'd do magus, but that's only because I've never actually played with one in my party (the closest I've come is listening to Matthew play one on the Glass Cannon Podcast).

Ruby Phoenix Tournament Games I've Played (Session Tracker)

If you go rogue go unchained.

An inquisitor might be interesting, too. They're pretty skill heavy and could be good with the church connection.

I like the vigilante as a concept but most of their abilities seem to shine only in campaign mode.

Though, I have to admit, I haven't actually read the 1E class.

I did flirt with the idea of a halfling with the childlike feat as a vigilante. His social persona would actually be a human urchin and his vigilante persona would be The Urchin, halfling revenger!

Sorry Ebon Fist, I'm getting confused figuring out which chronicles Quensha has received.

If we have a 7-9 left, I think I'll be bringing Crowe back for one adventure to earn Quensha some credit, unless I finish a whole lot of modules before this one ends.

I just realised, I should have played this one with Crowe. Not a big deal, I love playing Mylvwara, just a thought.

This shouldn't materially affect the game, but I just learned that all the boons that I got when I played pregens for level 1 should have activated when I reached the proper levels. So I added several boons that I got from 5-9 and 7-11 adventures way back when.

Sorry, EbonFist, but I'm playing a wizard and I'm not so useful if I cannot understand and master the environment.

The ethereal plane has the 'no gravity' trait. See here for rules regarding no gravity planes. The ghost can float (at half speed) because it is incorporeal but the fire elementals and the rest of us are stuck in place.

That's as far as I can tell. And then there are references to the whole place being insubstantial and incorporeal, as linked above. Solid ground is a 'rarity' in the ethereal and astral planes, for instance. Do we have solid ground here?

The rules for the ethereal plane are spread over a bunch of different books and they don't seem entirely coherent.

In 3.5 anything that was on the ethereal plane gained the 'ethereal' condition so we would all be ethereal. Whether that is the case now, I don't really know. it looks like something that they forgot to port over from 3.5

Most of the rules for spells and what-not to do with etherealness link back to ethereal jaunt, which says...

You become ethereal, along with your equipment. For the duration of the spell, you are in the Ethereal Plane, which overlaps the Material Plane. ..

Which seems to imply that the 3.5 rule is still in place and we are all now ethereal because being ethereal just means 'you are on the ethereal plane'

In 3.5, ghosts lived on the ethereal plane and had a special power to manifest on the material plane. In Pathfinder, ghosts are just incorporeal and all of the ethereal stuff was taken out. This encounter feels like a call back to 3.5

Basically, I think we should all be floating around at half-speed and the walls, floor and other objects are just misty images that we can float through.
That would mean the earth elemental can float under the fire wall, otherwise it will have to burrow.
That also means I can float over it, rather than casting fly.

But I could be completely wrong, because the information in the spell and the information in the description of the plane does not match up.

So, I basically need a GM ruling on these things:
is there gravity (as per the plane rules)?
Are we all ethereal (as per ethereal jaunt)?
Are there solid buildings and objects and ground or are they all insubstantial misty images (as per the description in esoteric planes and other places in the rules)?

I'm going to say it's not entirely a no gravity area because that would mean that only Galdron and who ever cast fly or had fly cast on them would be able to move.

I'm going to say that the buildings and ground are semi-solid, meaning you can stand on them but with a little (i.e. mechanically free) effort you can pass through them.

You are ethereal.

Galdron is Incorporeal, which, in this system means that he's got the same rules on the ethereal plane as he is on the material plane.

The earth elemental can pass under the wall without burrowing.

You can float over the wall without casting fly but directing that float and undoing it i.e. coming back down to the "ground" is the issue. That's why I'm asking for a fly or acrobatics check. Some way or another (pushing off the "ground", willing yourself in the right direction, flatulence power) you have to actually propel yourself somehow to move. The check is to see if you do that well, if you end up going through the wall on accident, if you careen off into the gray wastes of the ethereal plane or fall "through" the "ground," instead.

Ebonfist, if we are ethereal then we can all float (at half-speed) wherever we like.

So, you can keep no gravity: arrows that miss go on forever, you can let go of a sword and it will just float next to you while you cast your spell.
