As you are now out of combat, I've unmasked the rest of the map. You're standing in a control room overlooking the library that is 10 feet below you.

From this control room, you have access to a narrow hallway that circles the entire tower. In the northeast, southeast, and southwest corners of the tower, steep stairs descend 10 feet to the burning library. The circular stairs in the corners of the tower lead up and down to other floors (which leads you away from the burning library, so are not relevant to this scenario).

With the battle now over, you look through the glass windows at the library below you. Fire and smoke fill this immense room. A long and mazelike trench is carved into the floor of the room, brimming with gray mist. Shelves line the walls of the trench, filled with rows of ancient parchments and tomes. The trench forms into a rough circle in the room’s center, creating a small island with three bookshelves standing atop it. The twenty-foot-high ceiling of the room mounts large spray nozzles, each attached to a canister of blue foam.

The trench contains a magical gray mist and is 5 feet deep. Although not thick enough to provide concealment, the mist in the trench has a strange languid quality to it, causing the fire there to move with hypnotic grace.

Piles of burning books other texts are scattered throughout the room, creating fire hazards (that are marked on the map with flames). It looks like moving through those fires will be quite hazardous!

In the room, you see Loomarch pulling books off the shelves on the island and feeding them into his burning maw, while the fanatics have fanned out into the trench and are burning books there. A couple of hellish dog creatures are also in the room, pulling books off the shelves and ripping them apart with their jaws.

I find it amusing that they've even got dogs trained to participate in the book burning!! ha! Images of the hounds unmasked. I found two versions...so of course I opted for the fun one!

Here in the control room, you find the controls for the cryo-nozzles but the entire system appears to be deactivated!

Computers or Mysticiscm DC21 to reactivate:
You manage to reactivate the cryo-nozzles, allowing manual control!
A PC standing at the control console can spend a full action to aim one cryo-nozzle and fire a line (40 feet long, 5 feet wide) of freezing foam. This freezing foam automatically extinguishes any flames it encounters and deals 3d6 cold damage to all creatures in the line of effect (Reflex DC 16 for half).

The hellknights down in the library have not yet noticed that you've taken over the control room. So you can take the outer hallway and positions yourselves at whichever set of stairs (NE, SE or SW) you like before they'll notice your presence and combat begins.

Unfortunately, you won't have time for a 10 min rest because, well, books are burning.

Please go ahead and try to reactivate the cryo-nozzles, execute any desired healing, take any other actions you like (given the short amount of time you have available due to books burning), then decide your positions before we hop into combat!!

Oddman reactivates the cryo-nozzles system, aiming the closest one straight at Loomarch, leaving it ready to fire (or freeze, in this case). Then he starts moving to the northeast corridor. I’m assuming that now that it’s activated, anyone can control the nozzles

I volunteer to take the northeast route and go fight the regular hellknights and hotdogs, since Loomarch will probably be immune to my little fire boost augment. Someone should stay in the control room though, to put down the fires and help the rest of the party with the nozzles, since they seem to always hit

If possible, Oddman will also cast Pyre Wreath on himself.

Agreed on taking out the lesser threats first and to minimize the damage they are doing. Not sure who wants to man the cryo turret but I can do it if neccesary, or Oda if she is conflicted on fighting other Hellknights directly.

Altoring waits to see if someone else wants to take control of the turret, otherwise he heads downstairs with Oddman.

Ceolor smiles braodly as he works his way through the maze. "This really will be a great setting or plot device to use in a story sometime!"

He seems out of it for the rest of the time though, barely commenting on the hellknights nor even paying much attention during the short skirmish, shooting one handed and absentmindedly. Thank you for the bot! I forgot to update this game when I sat down at the computer yesterday! whoops.

He finally gets his notes and experiences in an organized fashion and finally perks up and notices his surroundings. "Wait the hellknights are BURNING things? OOOOHHH, that urks me, but i'm not sure if I should be more mad at the hellknights for burning things or the curators for their unwillingness to keep back ups!"

He looks over the controls and then into the room. "I am a good shot wiht most things. If the coolers need skill then I can man them, or I could get into the middle of it and shoot away. Either way works for me. My most damaging shots with my 'rifle' are fire based though and I'm not sure how helpful MORE flames would be here..."

Okay, Altorin and Oddman are in place to attack from the NE corner.

Ceolor might man the cryo-nozzle controls. No, the nozzles do not require skill to shoot. Just once per round, the person controlling them will have to indicate a single 40 foot line from one of the three nozzles. The effect areas key on the left side of the map includes templates for 30 foot lines, so the nozzle's 40 foot line would be similar to the template, but with two more squares to be 40 feet.

Hermena smirks down at the oblivious hellknights as she recharges her purple forcefield. "Nothing like a bit of high ground to make your entrance with a bang. If you can pull them towards the northeast corner I'll riddle them with bullets from the south."

Hermena can't heal SP, so she's going wait until her forcefield recovers (only 2 rounds, so it should be full by the time she gets in position) then set up at the SE corner with her rifle. If we're 10 feet above the center room, do the hellknights get any cover?

From Hermena's current vantage point, she'll have LOS on the hot dogs...errr hellhounds and on red & purple. Loomarch is on the other side of a tall bookshelf, so currently has total cover.

However, if red or purple moves to have the edge of the trench in between them and you, then standing down in that trench provides them improved cover. I've placed the letters "EX" in a couple spots to serve as examples of spots where the NPCs would have improved cover from you.

Ceolor double checks everyone is in place before slightly moving the nozzle across the room from them and then uses ICE BEAM fires the freezing ray hoping it will put out the fire. He then immediately turns on the controls for the opposite nozzle and takes aim directly south, hoping to hit the hell knight there and the fires as well.

Altorin hurts purple's feelings but doesn't devastate purple. Still though, 8 points worth of hurt feelings is imparted!

I assume Oda meant purple rather than blue?
Oda fires a round from her impressively large weapon but this hot misses purple!!

Ceolor fires off the cryo coolant and silently words 'Pew! Pew!' to himself while doing so!

Where the coolant hits burning fires, the fires are instantly snuffed out! Red is also hit by the icy beam for 3 points of damage!!!

Oh wait a minute!! I misread the NPCs for this battle. At this tier, there actually are no hellhounds. Darnit, I wanted them in not so much to attack you guys but because I really wanted to use those hot dog tokens! And I hadn't mentioned it yet but those dogs have integrated shoulder mounted machine guns!!!! So those cute little weiner dogs are firing off torrents of machine gun fire at you guys...how amusing an image is that?!?! Ah well... hot dog hellhounds removed from the map. Apologies for that!!!

Loomarch, seeing the cryo-nozzles activate, looks up at the control room and sees Ceolor up there, looking back down straight at Loomarch. Loomarch moves towards the control room, pulling out a grenade and lobs it towards the control room!!!
Grenade: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31

Ceolor being in the control room is shielded from the grenade blast, but as the party noted before, the damage to the control room has resulted in the floor being unstable. Loomarch's grenade blast causes the control room floor to collapse, destroying the cryo-nozzle controls and Ceolor falls down from the control room to the floor of the burning library!

Altorin holds his breath as the flames wash over him.

As the flames part, he is looks rather grumpy as his fur is charred and his mustache is still on fire.

So 5 (7-2)+10 (12-2) = 15 Fire Damage after resistance. Resistance reduces the turns burn damage to 0.

"The feeling is mutual, it seems! Then there will be no hard feelings for all of this. Just business." he coughs before making an exaggerated frown. He then lashes out at the hellknight with his whip.

Ceolor gives a small surprised sound as he tumbles down from the upper floor, along with most of the floor as well. He scrambles back up the floor a bit as it crumbles under him, trying to avoid the worst of the damage. He lands with a flourish and only a few scratches. As he moves, a slightly dark energy starts to flow around him, and any free floating parts of his out fit and hair subtly shift towards the edges of the wall, before he lands on the ground, hair floating slightly more than it ought to, before shifting immediately down, almost as if it's held flat by water or more pressure.

He looks up at Loomarch and smiles a broad grin. "Ohh, I get to fight you myself? Fun! I did enjoy your memory, but as a being of pure fire, I'm not sure you're going to enjoy my weapon!"

He reaches out and quickly pulls out his 'rifle' made of dark looking light. He takes aim, marking a small spot of shadow on a weak point in Loomarch's armor. He then tries to fire his 'rifle' at the spot. A small tight beam of electricity fires out, and connects to wither Loomarch or something behind him, and then stays in place for a second, as something notably pulses back along the beam, frost starting to form on whatever Ceolor hit.

The last round of combined attacks from the team finally brings Loomarch down! Or actually, he's already down prone... But he becomes unresponsive!!

With the hellknights all put down, you have no problem putting out the remaining fires, saving as many of the library's texts as you possibly can. Looking through the documents that the hellknights were targeting, they appear to be old planetary surveys.

Physical Science DC16:
You recognize that these surveys describe star systems close to the Veskarium. But aside from this, you cannot determine anything else of import or find any clues as to why the Order of the Pyre wanted them destroyed.

Moments later, Albryan brings Royo to rejoin you. They are accompanied but additional lore wardens who pick up the hellknight bodies and depart with them. You notice one of the hellknights appears to still be alive as they exit.

Excited, Royo says, "While researching more information in the Tower of the Oma, I discovered that one of the dispatched relics would have entered the system where First Seeker Jadnura first discovered it. I believe he’s traced the another object that hurtled into a distant star system in the Vast. Unfortunately, any other objects of a similar design appear to be untraceable based on the available records. Still, this is a major find for the Society and a huge leap for uncovering the mystery of the Scoured Stars!! I believe that finding another of these objects could help the Society enter the currently inaccessible system!!"

Albryan follows up saying, "Thank you all very much for your assistance in defeating the Order of the Pyre. As a token of our appreciation, the Curators hereby waives the entire research fee and in addition, Royo, we have for you this." Albryan provides Royo with a sealed tome. "It contains instructions on how to visit the Athaeum in the future."

Turning to the party, Albryan says, "I've just received word that the surviving hellknight was 'persuaded' to provide a bit more information regarding their actions. It appears Kelria found something especially troubling to the Order of the Pyre and departed with it while ordering the rest destroyed. They believe they were protecting the multiverse against dangerous secrets here. Believe us... we'll ensure this prisoner provides more details in time. And this hellknight transgression will not go unanswered."

Albryan continues, Also, the Curators recognize the Society’s likely need to reproduce the information you've uncovered today in order to rescue your lost agents. Therefore, we agree to grant the Society immunity in replicating the key data needed in order to complete your ongoing mission.
