I have apply a GM credit here to get to 5, so I will get him leveled tomorrow.

As an added note, Fifi leveled up with that scenario to 5 - no purchases done but she just got Energy Channel, a feat she's been meaning to get for a long time!
| GM Watery Soup |
We have 4 and I've PMed grimdog. Would you rather play 5 with most of you continuing, or draw in 1 more?
If we agree for 1 more, do any of you have recommendations for private recruiting, or should I just post a public recruitment?
| GM Watery Soup |
If there are no strong opinions, I'll move forward with 5 as soon as Patros joins.
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather
|
I'm updated to 5th level and just dithering on purchases here as far as what's the best way to advance Orin, but I think I am going with the following purchases:
Belt of Incredible Dexterity +2 Dex (4,000)
Enchant Armor to +1 (1,000)

Yes, you can deflect arrows and parry riposte the same round:
"Benefit: You must have at least one hand free (holding nothing) to use this feat. Once per round when you would normally be hit with an attack from a ranged weapon, you may deflect it so that you take no damage from it. You must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed. Attempting to deflect a ranged attack doesn’t count as an action. Unusually massive ranged weapons (such as boulders or ballista bolts) and ranged attacks generated by natural attacks or spell effects can’t be deflected."
So it triggers when I would be hit by a ranged weapon attack, only once per round.
Opportune Parry & Riposte uses your attack of opportunity for the round- although most Swashbuckler's have combat reflexes which allows them to use multiple AOOs (and therefore multiple Parry & Ripostes) ina single round.
And to clarify- I count as having a free hand because of Combat Juggling (as long as I juggle 2 items instead of 3).

So, there's one room left. It's a big, important, complex, and quite deadly room, but I'd put our projected completion around September 1.
Gameday begins on September 1.
Can I get a preliminary count of (a) how many of you were interested in continuing with #9-06 (Shores of Heaven, 1-5), (b) if you were interested in starting right away, and (c) if both (a) and (b) are yes, how you'd feel about me signing up the game for Gameday.
Pros: You'd get a boon, or a chance at a boon, or something (I'm not 100% sure). We'd also be helping the convention achieve whatever numbers it needs (some of the games seem to be very thinly populated, I hope that people are just procrastinating in signing up).
Neutral: Mechanically, the game would run exactly the same. I'd set the recruitment to Private and close the recruitment immediately so that everyone who wanted to join could join. We can't start before September 1 [that seems unlikely, anyway] but as I understand it we could start late, as long as ...
Cons: We'd be constrained to finish by the end of Gameday (mid-November). [This doesn't seem to be a problem given our pace.] Also, we'd be reliant on someone else for reporting. [This has been much better in the past few months, many of my past objections are less strong.]
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather

I'm in for the next one as well; I have signed up for some Gameday, but not with Orin so he's available to start now, but later is fine as well.
The Ghost Writer
|
If it still works the same way, the GM gets a race boon (I think it might be the one that lets you pick between Vishkanya, ratfolk or samsaran) and we all get a 10% chance of getting a random boon. I'm all for waiting until Gameday, especially if you're looking to get a race boon for yourself or to give to a friend.
| GM Watery Soup |
I don't intend to create any more PFS1 characters, so race boons are not worth much to me.
And to be clear, I think it's unlikely we'd finish so quickly that we'd be waiting for September 1. The last room has the proverbial two scoops of raisins.
Reggie Bottleberry
|
I'm good for waiting for Gameday. It's less than 2 weeks away so even if we knocked out the last room over the weekend we'd only be waiting about a week, which is a normal turn around between games.
Like you, I'm not making any more characters so I don't know how much any boons would be worth to me, but you can win gift certificates, too and I'm all for having my hobby budget supplemented.
The Ghost Writer
|
Yeah I'm at the point where I have an army of level 2-4 GM babies that I want to get high enough for higher level content. The next time I get a PFS race boon I'll probably just give it away. But yeah, I think this last fight will probably be a doozy.
Fifi Vanaash
|
I'm in for #9-06! I think signing it up for Gameday is a fantastic idea - boons are always cool, for GMs and players.
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather
|
Ghost Writer- you can use the wand, correct?
I was looking at what spells are available off it, and I don't think Orin is likely to use his action in combat to cast any of them, and its hard to say if there's a way we might burn off a few of these charges to prepare, but Mage Armor doesn't help me either.
Do we think that there's something on Summon Monster 3 that might be worth having when we open this last door?
The Ghost Writer
|
So I don't have UMD. Instead, I use Esoteric Linguistics to cast off scrolls using my Linguistics skill. If I could use it, I would be draining it in this final battle.
For summons, Lantern archons are pretty awesome. Their light rays might not look like much, but they can overcome all forms of DR. And casting
shadow conjuration is only a standard action, so you could easily spam these guys. They are shadows, so monsters get a Will save and SR will apply they attack. Even then, we can still get use out of them zooming around casting aid on everybody or using detect evil to locate an invisible foe.
Also, its still good for you to hold onto it just in case we need a Glitterdust to deal with any invisible foes or stinking cloud/fog cloud to break up the enemies line of sight. There's so many tactical options that little wand opens up.
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather
|
Yeah, I didn't know if you had the Vigilante options that gave you a caster level or what, so I will carry the wand- will have to see what the situation to decide what to cast I guess. Maybe a pit will come in handy.
The Ghost Writer
|
Wow, we have no casters in this party. Out total spell power consists of a paladin, 1 level of bard, and a guy that can use scrolls.
And we're doing fine!
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather
|
Hah! I realized that as well! 2 levels of Bard, but still only 1st level spells! Haven't missed it as we went though!
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather
|
So, lots of rules questions that has come up that I have never been in these situations before.
So- Shadow Conjuration is casting time 1 standard action with no mention of the spell it is imitating- so I am using it here to summon a Lantern Archon, which happens (it seems) as a standard action rather than full round.
So can this shadow lantern archon act immediately?
And then, if so- how does it using Aid work in this?
It seems like its 20% effective, but can I choose to fail (or to roll) the will save vs. the spell even though I know what I cast?
Sorry! This is a spell I just have not had run at my tables/used on a character before and its raising a lot of questions!
| GM Watery Soup |
I'll be frank - I've never used it myself and this is the first time I've GMed it, so I know little more than you.
Its use in the shadow room was heavily scripted so I didn't need to look up a lot of the specifics, but now I guess I have to.
Reggie Bottleberry
|
You can always voluntarily fail a save without rolling.
I don't necessarily know the rest but I know that, if you have an ability that shortens the casting time on Summon to a standard action, the creature can act as soon as it is summoned.
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather
|
Right- so I think reading it, Casting Time is just "1 standard action", then I intentionally fail and believe the Lantern Archon to be real so it can then immediately cast Aid on me?
I think!
The Ghost Writer
|
Yep, exactly! It works as long as you believe! And it works just like a regular summon spell, so the lantern archon immediately gets a standard and move action.
What's special about shadows is that they are partially real, so even if an enemy disbelieves, they still deal 20% damage and non-damaging effects have a 20% chance of still working.
The Ghost Writer

I picked up the Tengu Wings feat at level 5 and I also have scrolls of fly that I could use on other people. Maybe Laktharis will be considerate enough to come down and fight us, but if not, I have ways to get us up there. Tengu Wings is free for me to use, but frankly I think Patros and Reggie are our heaviest hitters and without a flank buddy I probably won't get through whatever DR he has. Fly has a touch range, so if you want a boost get close to me.
Reggie Bottleberry
|
Patros is probably your best bet.
Without a charge, I don't deal out that much damage. I mostly try to get in the way and annoy people with Rowdy's trip ability.
I AM amused by the possibility of Rowdy flying while Reggie is riding him, though.
Of course Rowdy had no Fly skill.
Also Tengu Wings is awesome. I used it to take down a couple drakes with my rogue in an adventure recently.
"Oh, you thought flanking was bad before? How do you like it when I'm behind you AND above you?"
Fifi Vanaash

Oh, Fifi can hit heavy when she wants to >:)
Orin Tarfoot Tallfeather
|
Anyone have suggestions on a use this last charge of the wand?
Should I try to put Valois into a pit? Or just summon another Archon?
| GM Watery Soup |
| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
So is dire bae. I know most of us try to stay away from our exes, but if you really need something mauled, you can summon the dire bae.

Chronicles for #7-17 are here. Please look them over and make sure I did everything right.
The continuation, #9-06, is here. You can dot in as soon as you're ready. Noral (who played Taarlik in #5-09) will be rejoining the group (but I don't think he's bringing Taarlik).
A reminder that #9-06 is Level 1-5. Any character that started #5-09 at Level 4.2 or 5.0 should be able to play through. If you're switching characters, just dot in with your new character (I've been picky about 3-7s and 5-9s being low tier, but 1-5s are fine either way).

Fifi will be forgoing her downtime to instead fulfill the following Faction Goal:
Rescue a named NPC who is a divine spellcaster with a good-aligned deity or a named outsider with the good subtype.
Two in a row, hooray!
| GM Watery Soup |
Whoops! It looks like I just used your first post and didn't see your correction.
I posted the revised Chronicle in the same folder.
