The Ghostwriter stands up, aims his bow and fires one if the demon slaying arrows at the fiend on the ceiling.
"Thank you for the clean shot, you fool!"
Longbow, Demon bane: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 2 = 14

Willing himself to believe the creature he summoned a true Lantern Archon, Orin called for it to aid his health.

GM Watery Soup |

Orin stands up and is not surprised at Valais swinging a claw at him. He knocks it away with a parry, but can't return with a riposte.
He summons a Lantern Archon, which Aids him.
After reading through a few threads, I agree with Ghostwriter, this is fine.
Ghostwriter stands up and fires an arrow at Laktharis, which misses.
I don't know if these are valuable enough for recovery, but if you want, you can roll d100 to see if you can recover the missed arrows after the battle.
Valais stares at Orin. Her human eye is full of kindness, warmth, and regret. The demon eye is full of seething hatred.
Gore: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 plus Acid: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Orin, I believe you gain a new reaction at the end of your turn. Did you want to parry/riposte?

She then steps away - partially strategically, partially at the horror of what she's watched herself do. She opens her mouth, her voice and Laktharis's echoing through the chamber in unison.
“HAS THE ONE-EYED SURGEON TRACKED ME HERE? ARE YOU HIS SLAVES? I WILL DESTROY HIM AND ALL OF HIS PAWNS, FOR I HAVE ADVANCED BEYOND THE SIMPLE MACHINATIONS OF HIS LAB. I AM AS FAR BEYOND DEMONS AS THEY ARE BEYOND YOU.”

(Apologies for the delay!)
Fifi stands up, realizing Laktharis is manipulating Valais, and yells-"You fiend! Why would to force your will on your friend? You are no innocent, and judgement will be passed."-her hair growing in size as the flames rise and expand.
She extends her hand towards Valais and says-"Valais, concentrate on my voice. You are your own being!"-trying to reason with her-"Friends, let our words be our blades in this battle, at least against our friend Valais!"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
(Move action stand up, 5-foot step, free action Smite on Laktharis, standard action to attempt to free Valais from his control, as per Patros' findings)

GM Watery Soup |

Valais listens to Fifi's words and takes them into account, but doesn't immediately act.
Valais will have a +4 to her next save (on her turn).
I just realized I made an error. Valais is staggered on rounds she receives Aid from the PCs, so she should not have been able to make a full attack last round. Her first attack goes through, but she doesn't follow up with the claw attacks. I'm returning 7 hp to Orin.
Laktharis chuckles.
"SO BE IT. DIE, MORTALS."
He casts a spell.

Fifi nears Ghostwriter, in an effort to be there if Laktharis flies down to attack him. She unsheathes her scimitar, and as she grabs it, it grows flaming hot with her smite. She then closes her eyes and prays-"Everlight, let your light shine through me. Let my steel hold your good spirit and your ever-loving flame"-concentrating on her Fire manipulation abilities.
Her scimitar ignites into holy flames, as she spins it and readies to face Laktharis's offense-"Come face me, failed experiment!"

GM Watery Soup |

Patros - Laktharis is currently 30' in the air. I'm going to change your attack to a readied attack, if that's okay.
Ghostwriter fires a longbow and puts an arrow into Laktharis's shoulder.
Orin commands his archon, who fires two rays.
Valais's face contorts as she struggles against her not-so-inner demons.
Will (2 aids): 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 4 = 24

"DO YOU THINK ME SOME KIND OF DOG, THAT YOU THROW STONES AT ME? FOOL."
Rowdy snaps at Valais, but doesn't connect, and she is undeterred.
Laktharis issues a greater command, "FALL!"
Everyone except Valais needs to make a DC 14 Will save.
On its turn, the subject falls to the ground and remains prone for 1 round. It may act normally while prone but takes any appropriate penalties.
Laktharis will land next to someone who failed their save. I'm going to do the Will saves so that I can place Laktharis before we move forward.

Patros slashes Laktharis with his cold iron falcata, making another large gash.
Orin fires a crossbow bolt and slashes with a wakizashi. He sees a brief opening to catch an artery with his wakizashi, but he just misses. However, both the arrow and the wakizashi wounds do not seem to cause any damage.
To keep things moving, I'm going to assume that Ghostwriter steps out of melee range on his turn. Valais won't chase him, so she will attack Orin.

Patros (+5 temp hp)
Sorry - I was looking at the high tier Laktharis's HP!
Patros's cold iron falcata cuts cleanly through Laktharis's flesh, severing its head from its body.
The severed head and the decapitated body rapidly decompose while colorful spirals of planar energy crackle and swirl around his corpse.
A similar burst of violet energy rises from Valais’s kalavakus parts and joins the planar maelstrom around Laktharis’s body. The energy swirls into a small vortex before collapsing on itself and vanishing completely.
End of Combat!
Thurl’s notes fly off of the demon’s body and scatter about the room.
Valais breathes heavily; she looks up at the Pathfinders.
“He’s gone, I don’t hear him whispering in my ear any longer. Perhaps that is the answer? Perhaps we must track down the other demon Thurl used to build my body and destroy it. Whatever happens next, thank you for keeping me alive. I hope Thurl’s notes will help us.”
There are two loose ends here that need to be tied up - one is the unconscious man on the ground (-10 hp, stable), and the other is the staff. The staff is a charwood staff (fire-blackened wood with cracks exposing glowing embers and dripping blood red sap), and radiates a strong transmutation aura and great evil.

Cure Light Wounds, bard spell slot: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

GM Watery Soup |

Orin taps the gentleman with his wand, who blinks awake.
Upon seeing Valais, he scrambles to find his weapon, only to remember his arm missing. The Pathfinders reassure him of Valais's good intentions, and he calms down.
He introduces himself as Kitarlo, a raelis azata. Kitarlo had been secretly assisting the Fifth Crusade against the Worldwound, inspiring heroism in the soldiers and collecting their stories. When he saw a mangled kalavakus sneaking out of the city, the curious azata followed the demon through this former holdings in the Worldwound and back to his magical tree. Kitarlo wasn’t sure what the tree was, but he knew it must be important. After fighting off the demon, Kitarlo placed a special ward around the tree to ensure that only someone with a pure soul could approach it. Just as Kitarlo was finishing his ward, Laktharis returned and ambushed him. The demon ripped the azata’s arm off and grafted it to his own body in the hopes that it would allow him to pass the ward, but the arm alone was not enough. That was the last thing that he remembered before falling unconscious.
He excitedly listens to tales of the Pathfinders' adventure, Thurl’s experiments, and Valais’s transformation. He takes pity at her situation, and admires her strength for retaining her mind against the demonic onslaught. He speaks directly to Valais.
“Your story intrigues me. I can ease your mind, but I cannot help you this moment. There is one possibility I know of, but it requires access to a very special library. In Heaven, there is a place called the Great Library of Harmonious Scripture, which, among other things, contains a record of every sacred ceremony that has ever been performed. A contact of mine owes me a favor; perhaps with his help we can get you the information you need to restore yourself, body and soul. Of course, your way also seems to work, though it requires much more violence.”
He eyes the corpse of Laktharis. “What will you try first: hunt down and slay the other demon whose body is incorporated into yours or seek the help of archons, whose procedures can take many years to navigate?”
Valais’s eyes flit between the celestial being and the demonic corpse, and then land on her fellow Pathfinders. “You’ve helped me face what has happened to me as no one has before. I trust your wisdom. What do you think I should do?”

![]() |

Just to clarify, the parts of her that were linked to this demon are now back to normal?
Reggie watches in amazement all the transmutative transpirings. He keeps expecting more trouble, including when the one armed man is woken up, but it never comes. Not that he minds.
When Valais puts the question to them, he strokes his sideburn thoughtfully. "Well, slayin's part of the job but it ain't the reason I do the job. Granted, it's a demon, so it probably ain't up to no good, but if there's a way we can do this peaceful like, even if it takes longer, I'd vote for that."

GM Watery Soup |

Valais was composed of two different demons - a babau, and a kalavakus (Laktharis). The parts that were Laktharis reverted to normal, but not the babau parts.
"Very well, then," Kitarlo responds. "I'll need a few Golarion days to arrange transport. Then, we'll head to the Shores of Heaven, a mercantile district where mortals and other planar visitors can meet to trade with Heaven’s natives. There's a great restaurant there - The Angel's Wing - where they serve the best buffalo wings. Yes, that's right, the buffalo in heaven have wings, and they're delicious."
Everyone pack up to leave, and Kitarlo notices the charwood staff.
"Oh, this thing. This used to be an ancient Sarkorian relic, the heartwood staff. The staff could transform into a huge magical tree and keep the nearby soil fertile. Unfortunately, Laktharis has twisted it with Abyssal power. I know a ritual to cleanse it, but I would need some help, I think that could only be done with the aid of other Pathfinders."
To succeed, you need to succeed at two of: a DC 25 Spellcraft, a DC 25 Knowledge (religion), and a DC Knowledge (history). I believe nobody has Spellcraft or History, and only Fifi has Spellcraft, so you will be unable to purify the charwood staff. Correct me if I'm wrong - I'm filling out your Chronicles, which allow you to purify it for Fame.
This is the end of the adventure, to be continued in #9-06, Shores of Heaven.

![]() |

Fifi is overjoyed they were able to liberate Valais of her demonic part. She jumps up in joy as she sees the transmutative transpirings-"Yes! Today is a great day!"-she smiles and hugs Valais.
She then suggests-"While I am in no mood to show mercy to a babau, but it might prove hard to find a particular one, if perhaps it is currently in the depths of the Abyss. Let's opt for the option that's safer!"-choosing the trip to heaven instead.
Regarding the ritual to purify the staff, she says-"I believe I could be of help. If there are no more who could follow the ritual, perhaps a summoned creature from the wand could?"-pondering the question out loud.
(I believe GM WS was referring to the Knowledge (religion) Fifi has, so I'll roll just in case!)
Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
(That's still aid-able by untrained folks!)

"It seems like I'm alone here, but personally I'd prefer to stalk and kill this babau. Its faster and more efficient and we would put an end to any shennanigans it may be up to on our plane."

"I am ready to help whichever way we go. We must complete the process and restore our friend to her rightful self."

GM Watery Soup |

Kitarlo says, "The group seems split, the choice is yours, my lady."
Valais ponders for a while, and then comes to a decision. "The demon nature within me yearns for vengeance. The sight of blood - even its fellow demon's - excites it. I reject vengeance - and choose redemption.
To Heaven!"
