After a few hours of dinner and fine conversation, Princess Eutropia stands, and produces a very fine, slightly glowing, rapier with the Stavian family crest on the pommel. She bids you all to kneel before her in the parlor. Solemnly, and with much seriousness, she taps you each in turn with her sword (excepting Underfoot). She then bids you rise, calling you each individually by your full and formal names (which you’re surprised she knows), with Sir or Dame before them.

”There, you now swell the ranks of the nobility of Taldor and are entitled to Sir or Dame before your name. Of course this isn’t official until your titles can be entered into the Log of Nobility in the Senate, but that building is locked to us for the time being I’m afraid. Don’t let that stop you! You’ve earned the titles you now carry, and you have my thanks for your service.”

You are now Knights of Taldor, with all that that entails. Congratulations!

She smiles, ”And now I must attend to other matters. I trust Martella has arranged fine accommodations, and that you are willing to wait a few days more. Prepare yourselves, for if our little plan comes to fruition, you’ll be traveling some ways out of Oppara, possibly for some weeks. Martella will have the details for you when they are finalized. Until then.” she nods to Martella who produces more of her pouches of gold, handing you each one saying, ”Take this and equip yourselves well, for any eventuality. But keep some in reserve, for you never know.”

Martella guides you to the door, after you say your goodbyes. ”I don’t yet know how we can best use you. There’s a problem we face that has a number of possible solutions, but we’re running out of options. If that doesn’t work out, there are other, less interesting things, but we shall see. In the meantime, enjoy your stay, and I’ll be in touch soon, a few days likely, a week on the outside.”

Each pouch contains 1,500gp.

And with that you pour yourselves back into the carriage for the trip back to the Silent Horse.

"Sir Muri," Anselm says with evident satisfaction as the party settles into the carriage, "I should not think of this gold as a payment to mercenaries. In matters of state, the Crown must make investments today in order to yield desired results tomorrow. We will need funding to act in support of her claim."

He gazes at the halfling knight, smiling gently. "It was courageous to ask Her Royal Highness to back your family. I would also like to offer what support I may, for I know that the wellbeing of your family must align with the common good. Pray tell, what matters come foremost to mind?"

Muri relaxes in his chair, a visible ease crossing his brow. "That is very agreeable, Princess. Honestly, it's more than I expected." The halfling considers saying more, but ends up simply saying "Thank you."

Muri blinks, a mixture of disbelief and shock. When the sword touches his shoulder, the halfling's neck muscles tense. He eventually looks up and into the face of the Princess, then stands before her. "You honor me, Princess Eutropia. I'm not sure if I'm worthy of the title, but I will swear to serve you as best as I can. There is something greater here, and I wish to be a part of it."

As Muri regards the pouch in his lap on the carriage ride back to the Silent Horse, the man of fey speaks words entirely on the mark for the halfling's consideration of recent events. "Sir Anselm." Muri's face contorts both awkward of the new title and flush of the dawning realization that they are truly knights in the eyes of Princess Eutropia. "I thought that if I fell in opposing the Princess's enemies, that my cousin and uncle might suffer the same fate, that Thamir Gixx is a black god who might lash out not only at me, but mine, as well." Muri shakes his head, clearing it a little.

"They're at risk, by association. I'm less worried about my family in the north, only because halfling assassins might grow discouraged for the travel, and for better targets in the Capital City. I just don't want to fail the farm, for my journey here. And I think that I just succeeded, when the Princess promised to have a look. It's all I wanted, really, eyes on the problem." Muri settles into his seat, nodding to himself.

"Do you think we're meant to be negotiators? Messengers? Or maybe bounty hunters? What do you think they're going to ask us to do, in support of her Claim to the Throne?"

"I can't say that I know. If I were Her Royal Highness, I would give us a goal and let us determine the means necessary. Though I shouldn't think one sends a knight as a messenger."

The freshly ennobled noble laughs lightly before shifting to more serious matters. "Let us be clear: We have entered a dangerous contest. We will have enemies aplenty, above and beyond the assassin gods' minions. So shall all of Taldor, should this erupt into civil war."

Will have more to say after I figure this part out.

Elen is dumbstruck when bid to kneel.

"Oh, oh," Elen stammers looking about in embarrassment having already been too silent too long. "I - I initially came out here to visit and support my cousin -- a trader here in ' View," she points seaward. She continues at first, more quietly, "on a whim I thought I'd try out for a part in the local musical, maybe work my way up the artisan ladder to serve in a court to promote and encourage a more ... modern approach to leadership, but this --" Elen pauses in thought, kneeling. This is a big deal... but who is ever going to say 'Dame Mallë-o i Otos Elen'?, "-- This is much quicker. I would be honored to serve Your Royal Highness."

You return to the Silent Horse, the carriage stopping comfortably at the main entrance. The driver calls out as you depart, ”When you need to travel, you just let me know. My name’s Myrna in case she didn’t tell you. Martella can be a bit forgetful about the little things.” she grins.

According to Martella, you have at least four days to yourselves, and possibly as long as a week. There are some items in the kitty for sale, and I imagine you may have some individual, and possibly group purchases. Remember Martella’s suggestion to leave a reserve as well. Let me know what group items you may wish to purchase, and I’ll do a divvy.

Also there are two potions of cure moderate that someone should carry (Kamari and Elen already have one each), a potion of neutralize poison if you want it, and the nobles pillbox (a gift from Senator Dou). Let me know what you’d like to do with those items.

"Of course, just let your butler know, maybe 30 minutes before departure and we'll be ready. Can do faster, but it does take some time to harness the horses." she smiles back as she leads the team to the attached stables.

Once alone again, Mama D looks at you all carefully, "I'm not sure I can do this." she says simply.

"I need to think on this. Please, I need some time to sort this out. I came here with a purpose, and now I'm a Dame and expected to just help the Princess, my Queen, fight off a coup? I mean, really."

"I'm going to head to my home tonight. Please keep me informed, but I'll need some space to come to grips with this."

She carefully hands back the pearl of power Elen gave her, "Until we're together again." She'll take her share of the treasure and spend the week thinking, and likely crafting scrolls...

Anselm bids Dame D a fond, hopefully temporary farewell. "If you should choose to rejoin us, I would be delighted!"

He throws a discrete, sympathetic look Sir Kort's way.

I do hope she returns soon. Whether it's romance or just the rapport of age, they're good for each other.

He offers his remaining comrades with genuine humility, "You are all very adept at navigating matters of the court. That said, if there is anything I can do to help acquaint you with relevant protocols, it would be my honor."

Kamari is sad to see Mama D go.

Just when I was getting the Lady Lotheed times two straight.

"Dame Kamari. Dame Everly." Kamari whispers her new name to herself. She's not sure what she thinks of the title she never sought nor dreamed to possess.

Well, it might give me the opportunity to change more things for the better. Assuming all the power doesn't go to my head. She laughs out loud and sets to making another drink.

"I hope we don't have to stay out of sight too long. I might end up as just another noble lush."

Kort nods *very* stiffly at Mama D’s words. He had hoped to learn more from her, after her years of clearly classical arcane study. She knew actual spells. He knows life is short (especially at his age) and knows she must make the right decision for herself, but also, you rarely completely outgrow selfishness...and this time that feeling bites him.

”Yes, of course. I’m sure we will see each other again. I...I...still have many questions for you,” K’Aldrian confesses. ”It would have been nice to learn more about what you know so well.”

Kort nods stiffly again, old knight acknowledges old knight.

Party Divvy!
You each gain 2,145 gp, and the party picks up a wand of lesser restoration. Please let me know who’s tracking the wand, thanks. This includes the pouches of 1,500gp from the Princess, it isn't in addition to. You're not yet that wealthy.

Four days will pass relatively uneventfully, depending on your actions of course. Though the Exultation Massacre is still fresh in their minds, the citizens of Oppara begin to liven up a bit as the days pass. After all, this is really a matter for the nobles to figure out, and everyone knows how they can screw up a good thing. So the commoners largely wait, though the gossip still runs long about who’s in charge, who will be in charge, and whether there will be a bloody war first.

The Silent Horse is lovely however, and you are pampered in ways you never thought possible just a short while ago. You do some shopping, and run a few miscellaneous errands while you wait on the Princess’s pleasure. If this is what it’s like being a noble, pampered waiting, it’s not all bad!

The first four days pass without notification however, and so you settle in for a few days more.

(For planning purposes she’s going to reach out to you in four more days, on the morning of Pharast 13, a Toilday. Please feel free to occupy yourselves for this next delay, and then onward!)

Kamari spends her days preparing for the journey. She arranges to have her armor enhanced, but can't think of anything else that needs to be done.

She does risk a trip to see her father though after much preparation of a disguise. She takes a long, circuitous route that crosses over itself many times to ensure no one is following her. Once near her home, she spends a good half hour seeking out anyone spying upon her home. Only when she is sure it is safe will she risk approaching the home. She knocks in a pattern her father will recognize and waits. The door opens quickly and her father tries to rush her inside without appearing to be in a hurry.

Kamari allows herself an hour with her father, sharing everything that has occurred and warning him of her upcoming extended absence. He does not have much to share, but his story matches what she's heard. He has still been reporting to work on the canals, but receiving little direction from his superiors on pending projects. Maintain the status quo and keep things running is what he's been told.

He has no need of it, but Kamari leaves him a hundred gold. "Just in case, Dad."

When it's time to leave, there are more than a few tears, but finally her father sends her on her way, "Be safe, Lady Everly."

The halfling stands, fists on hips, looking slightly up at the sheepdog, the two of them holding eye contact only because one of the fists holds a piece of jerky. Muri eventually raises a finger, instructing Underfoot wordlessly to remain in place, while Muri paces around her, comparing shoulder heights, then hip-to-shoulder heights. His nose presses down in constant amazement of the size difference, while looking over at the newly oiled leather saddle yet to be tossed up top. By the time he's made a full circle, he bids the sheepdog to lay down, fully hugging the cobblestones on the road outside the Silent Horse.

Muri plainly struggles to learn saddling a sheepdog. Underfoot proves patient enough, given the jerky currently between her jaws. The halfling waves away a couple of good samaritans stepping up and offering their assistance. He's got to manage it solo, if he finds himself alone, and he's been given the time to prepare, best be about it.

The sheepdog doesn't make it easy, however, when she realizes that she can induce the administration of another piece of jerky by shirking off the saddle and interrupting the halfling in securing the straps. A kind of detente comes about when the halfling realizes what the sheepdog's about, and the sheepdog comes to understand that she's negatively habituating the halfling.

The saddle secured, the rest of the day is dedicated to riding practice. Without a bridle, Muri has to learn trust on a whole new level. In turn, Underfoot has to learn what it feels like to be ridden, and what it feels like to lose her rider. More than once, it turns out. Muri is skulled a couple of times, taking turns down alleys too abruptly. Only for the grace of the saddler's recommendation to secure a military-grade saddle does Muri not suffer more throws from his mount.

Muri returns to the Silent Horse, a little beaten of body, but not of spirit. He's seen where the skill will grow, and he's hopeful.

...

Elen wrote:

Muri welcomes the socialization of the sheepdog, watching the two practice at times, other times taking leave to travel about the city alone, especially shopping. The now-bigger dog makes it difficult sometimes, when he wants to walk the showroom floor without drawing much attention.

...

Muri can't come to bring himself to personally visit House Pelicourt, even as the days bridge the time from the Slaughter on the Senate Floor. He eases his mind by writing out the events in painful detail, pulling no punches in descriptions of everything, from the eruption of violence moments before being whisked into the basement structure, to the siege of the Dignified Repository. It takes him several pieces of paper to finish his accounting, rolling it up and sealing with wax and his signet ring.

There is hesitation when he hands it off to their butler, hoping that in doing so, he hasn't endangered the messenger. He can't mute his paranoia with regards to halfling assassins, who can take any form they need to see themselves insinuated into households or governmental buildings.

"Please, can you ask my cousin Mircene to write a small note to acknowledge that she received this? I trust you to see it delivered, but I still want something that confirms it."

...

The subsequent days are spent in speculation, of where they might travel, and what he might want to spend his remaining funds on, to best equip both himself and Underfoot.

"I don't like not knowing. They should have given us more direction, don't you think? Are we going to travel by sea or land? Are we camping in the wilderness?" Muri looks to Anselm. "If we're risking our lives, it sounds like we're meant to fight. Do we need weapons meant to subdue, more than kill?"

Kort buys only a few books on magical theory while he is out and about, outside of a fresh supply of bolts for the crossbow. He doesn't know yet what he is saving his money for, but the fancy quick belt that Kamari has (?) seems like a neat purchase, though something that would enhance his brain seems like fun too. In the end, he saves the rest for a rainy day.

Kort is disappointed when he realizes that he has to buy cold iron bolts in bulk (50) even though he's not sure he's going to live long enough to use them all.

Nonetheless, he is able to keep himself busy, either by reading, taking a nice constitutional, or even practicing his 'archery' with the 'bow.

An hour later and a quiet knock brings Liliane, along with a folded note. She adds, ”We were able to use our most discerning messenger. I don’t think he was noticed.” The note sends you Mircene’s warmest regards and bears her signature.

Early (8am!) in the morning of Pharast 13, a Toilday, there’s a knock on your door and Liliane Deniau enters with another tiny note, sealed with another tiny dollop of wax and a miniaturized symbol of Lady Martella Lotheed’s seal. Opening the thin scroll, you see Martella’s crabbed writing, ”Meet me at our usual coffee house by noon today. Pack for a long trip in the country, bring at least one fine outfit, a suitable hunting outfit, and a respectable mask and costume.”

You have four hours to make the deadline…

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Kamari curses a bit at the need for a mask and costume. She has two fine outfits now and her adventuring clothes should suit for hunting, but a mask and costume with only a couple hours notice?!?! She thinks of what Mistress Betzina could have created with four days. Instead she will have to turn to Liliane for her connections again. More good gold going to those who don't likely need it.

I really wish we knew whether we we're trying to attract or avoid attention. Will there be people to offend with one choice or another? Are any topics forbidden? Angels? Devils? Fairies? A skin-tight fairy outfit with plenty of cleavage showing or lots of billowy robes to hide my identity? Maybe I'll pack both.

After some thought she settles on something elegant, but attractive.

"A black swan," Kamari explains to Liliane as she sketches out the design. "And for the mask, something like this. Might you know of someone who can assist?

"Also, a simple set of black robes please with a death mask."

That should do in a pinch.

...

Returning to the Silent Horse, barely in time to join the others, Muri produces the fruits of his hunt. "I did well for the time we were given. I don't see myself attending a costume ball without Underfoot, so I paired them. The day after the dinner with Eutropia, Anselm visits the family haberdashery, Pictor’s Dictums. He takes his time selecting fabrics, from the finest Andoran tweed to Minkaian silks. The staff are bemused by his design stipulation. ”A touch of the fey court. Specifically, it’s a must to expose seven seams in an artful yet seemingly unwitting fashion. And if you would be so kind as to reference the Eternal Maiden’s songbird in that delightfully subtle way you always do for me.”

He orders a fine sporting outfit befitting a member of the Crown Princess’ retinue, as well as a set of fine courtly garb.

He comes away with a ring of Nexian origin, etched with warding symbols. He makes his way to Westport, inquiring after passage on one of the ships that caters to well-heeled passengers.

Later that day, he visits Priscus at the family townhouse. ”Not that they’ll ask, old friend, but I’ll be off to Sothis shortly. Traveling with Captain Scaevina aboard Caesia's Flight. Oh, don’t look worried. It’s quite secure.” He fills a trunk up with clothing, art supplies, and other travel necessities. ”Take care, Priscus. Let us hope this frightful business is resolved soon.”

He spends the remaining days enjoying his luxurious surroundings, with a daily jaunt to the Statue Garden of Porthmos, where he paints or sketches in a state of bliss.

”Ah, a costume. And hunting? Well, this sounds like a fine new adventure. I suppose I’ll need to dream something up as we travel.” Shortly thereafter, he makes his way to the lobby. In tow, a porter carting his sizable trunk…

”You’re not wrong in your desire, but we are well taken care of by the Inn, so there’s really no need sir.” She’ll pocket the gold without further comment if it’s still offered, and with a little smile.

Liliane appears when summoned and looks, a little, concerned about the time as your various needs are laid out before her. ”There won’t be time to have it fitted properly, but we’ll see what we can do.” She summons Irene, the dressmaker/seamstress, and together the pair of them take requests and quick measurements. By the time 5 minutes have passed there are a half dozen assistants moving smoothly to Liliane’s orders.

Within two hours, you have the clothes you seek, more or less. Irene, with help from several assistants, nips here, tucks there, trims this, adds lace there, and generally fusses for the next hour before she declares you ”Fitted as best we can.” She’s still sniping a loose thread here and there as you pack your things and load up the carriage - Liliane having taking the liberty of telling Myrna to be ready.

With a half hour to spare, you ride the few blocks to the Shining Scale.

The carriage comes to a stop before Kamari can finish checking the interior for secret compartments. She steps out and heads directly to Lady Lotheed's table while admiring the fresh pastries on display.

Sweet or savory? What mood am I in today?

Anselm accepts Irene's help in assembling the basics of his costume design, which centers around a masked headdress with bedazzled antlers and a pair of leafy wings. "My rendition of the Verduran Erlking. Tis a pale homage to the actual fellow."

. . . . . .

"Some coffee, please, in the style of Katheer. Yes, cardamom. Wonderful. Ah, yes, and I do adore your eclairs." Anselm continues his pleasantries with the younger Lady Lotheed, waiting for the clockwork cricket to begin its chirping.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

You come to the Shining Scale, and Martella is already waiting. When she sees you, she rises, grabs a journal she had been reading and making notes within, and says, ”Great, let’s go. I assume your coach is outside? So’s my horse. We’ve a long and somewhat uncomfortable journey ahead of us. We’ll talk on the road. Do you have everything you need?”

She’ll herd you back out to the coach (though there is time to grab something quickly if you wish) where she tethers her horse to the back on a long lead. She passes a note to the driver so as not to announce your destination. The driver reads the note, nods, and hands it back. The coach seats 6 in some comfort, and can manage two more with fold-down seats in the doors though those are rather less comfortable. So you six clamber aboard and begin the ride.

Lady Martella chats amiably about nothing of importance for some little while, watching the city of Oppara disappear as the wheels of your carriage begin to put the miles behind you.

After a time, when Oppara has fallen well away, Martella gets down to business. ”I appreciate you agreeing to this trip on such short notice, and I apologize for that short notice. Please have an estate.”

In a more formal voice she intones, ”In accordance with Princess Eutropia Stavian the first’s wishes, you are now Lords and Tribunes of Stachys and Landgraves of Stachys Canal in addition to being Knights of Taldor. Let me be the first to congratulate you.” In a somewhat difficult maneuver she formally shakes all your hands and passes around a number of documents attesting to your ownership and new positions.

“I wish I could say this gift didn’t come with strings attached, but these are tangled times. The Ulfen Guard - the emperor’s personal bodyguards - have locked down the Imperial Palace and Senate. They won’t allow access to anyone until Taldor has an official Grand Prince once again. Keeps unreasonable sorts from looting the place, I suppose, but it has also sealed away Eutropia’s personal wealth. It may be an early move by Pythareus to limit the Princess, or just the Ulfen guard flexing a little muscle after their failure to protect the Grand Prince.”

”The Stavian family has another estate, though - the Palace of Birdsong - but the Stavians entrusted its care and maintenance to stewards nearly two centuries ago. These stewards now refuse to leave and, I’m told, are courting Maxillar Pythareus’s favor. It doesn’t help matters that these squatters are my family, or that my half brother Count Bartelby Lotheed has been squandering the estate’s fortunes for decades.” She looks about to spit, but manages to keep down the bile.

”While we technically have the authority to demand the estate’s return, we currently lack the power. If we can weaken Bartelby’s own power base and woo some of his subordinates to support us, we could reclaim the Palace of Birdsong and the county seat. That’s where you and your lovely new home come in.”

”The Lady Allis Betony died nearly a decade ago, leaving no heirs. We purchased her estate out of receivership last week, and you are the new Lords. You’ll be arriving just in time to make your debut at the annual Tanager Jubilee, a celebration of the founding of the palace, and by extension, the county. It’s on the Spring Equinox and a long standing celebration. The nobles gather and party for two days, and even the common people have those days off - a short break before the spring harvest and subsequent plantings begin in earnest.”

”I’ll be riding on to Cassomir once we near the county border. Once there, I’ll be meeting with Grand Duchess Tiberan, among others. I’ll formally register your lands in those documents, of which I have copies, and pursue the Princesses claims there.”

”I want you to make friends, learn the lay of the land, and then do what you can to win the nobles’ and citizens’ loyalty. Undermine Bartelby, and wherever you can, try to improve peoples’ lives in the name of the Princess. For any overt actions you take, you’ll likely want to hide your identity to keep Bartelby from cracking down on you. He is your superior here after all.”

“I feel I must stress the importance of your task. The Princess has sold her townhouse in Oppara to fund this plan, and at this point her resources are perilously thin. If we’re to stand any chance in this bid for the throne, we need a suitable base of operations and steady income.”

”Now, I’m sure you have questions, and we have some five days of travel together ahead of us, so what can I tell you?”

The documents she hands over include originals and two copies of everything. One copy is for display purposes if you’re so inclined, and is particularly flowery in a fine calligraphic style. One copy is to give to Count Lotheed, your direct noble superior in the region, and the originals are for you to keep somewhere safe.

Congratulations! You are now entitled to Lord and Lady before your names and the rest trailing behind after in formal situations or on letterhead. Commonly, to continue the example, you’d just be referred to as Lord K’Aldrian Kort, except when holding court in Stachys in which case you’d be Tribune or Landgrave K’Aldrian Kort depending on what case you were hearing.

Lady Martella will give you quite a bit of background on the county, including a map (now up on Roll20 - there’s a white carriage in the SE corner where you are headed), and all the information found here (link). Let me know who would like access to edit the document and I’ll add you as it’s a convenient place to take notes. It’s also linked at the top of the page.

Muri's jaw drops at Lady Martella's new declaration. He watches wordlessly as the documents are produced, distributed, poured over, before he addresses their fellow traveling companion.

"Landgrave? Of Stachys Canal? How far north is that?" The halfling takes the time to understand its distance from the true north of Taldor, and he frowns. "Does Stachys Canal need more than one landgrave? What if one of us was Lord or Lady, and the others would be there to support them for a while? I'm not interested in living in Meratt."

This is neat. And will take some time to get used to. Until then, Kort will stay as Major, or Major Kort, or K'Aldrian (to his war buddies).

Kort reads over the documents, strangely awed by them. He's never seen their like, yet he has spend his life defending their validity and right to exist. He is quiet while he thinks over his questions.

"I'm sorry, M'Lady. Did you say we had an estate? Can you show me where it is on the map? I'm having a hard time orienting myself here." K'Aldrian waits for an explanation, getting himself oriented. I see the locations and legend, just RP.

I'll have more on the morrow. Giving Tuesday has broken me.

Or amoor?” he asks, seeking clarity. ”Was the dealer Kelish? ‘Amoor’ in kelish roughly translates at ‘pigstained’, but if the creator of the wand had studied Azlanti, then ‘amore’ has its roots in seductive dance. It’s really a very fine carriage (new springs!), and the ride not too uncomfortable - though as you get further from Oppara, the roads really drop off in quality. It’s been a long time since these roads were maintained… It’s even worse in the County of Meratt, but you’ll learn soon enough.

”Oh, anything hostile to the Lotheeds really. If you attract too much public attention, Count Bartelby could investigate your investiture and challenge your nobility. As the Princess is not yet Emperor, he could succeed. More importantly to the cause, too obvious a move could give him the cover to formally ally with Pythareus. If he does that, we may be boxed in, lose the county, and a valuable source of wealth. So the risks of your failure are very high indeed.”

”Baron Okerra is a lovely man, but a stickler for the rule of law. Very formal, he will continue to serve his count, until there’s another. However, he is also a good and kind man. Perhaps the best of the nobility in the region, and quite handsome!” she pauses a moment, remembering the Baron, ”You may find an ally there, but be cautioned, he will look dimly on any, ah, extracurricular activities.” (Martella is able to explain Baron Nicolaus’ bias - He respects integrity, and has a predilection for other lawful characters. If your alignment is lawful, you get a +2 on your rolls with the good Baron.)

”That’s quite fair. You have a few options Lord Daybreaker. You can refuse this gift, and you will not be thought the lesser for doing so - this is a gift with strings I know! You can also hire someone to act in your stead, a steward. It’s quite common in fact - I have one for my estate. I haven’t been home in three years and that was just a brief visit.”

”But to answer the broader question… This is a small estate, with a tiny village, and the Stachys Canal is, even when it’s working (and it hasn’t for decades) is not heavily used. Lady Betony handled it all herself for many years before her death, but no one has been handling it for ten years now. Techincally the Count is supposed to see to things, but he’s merely been collecting the taxes, and doing nothing.”

”However, as there are many of you, you have a choice. Currently, I believe, any one of you may make an edict and it is the law. Further, any one of you can preside over trials and resolve issues independently. If any one of you disagrees with the edicts of another, you bring the matter before the Count and he decides. However, you could break it up however you wish, and rewrite the law. Remember, you are the law in Stachys now.”

”You could handle the responsibilities round-robin, say once a year you switch. You could decide communally, by a vote, how things are to be done. Really anything you wish, but remember - whatever you do, the Count must sign off on it. So you may want to wait for the Princess Eutropia to appoint a new Count before trying something too progressive. My half-brother is not known for his open mind and you don’t want to antagonize him overmuch officially.”

She looks up and remembers her time there, I’ve not seen it in over a decade, but it’s quite the pastoral wonderland: olive orchards and vineyards, and hills and ample woods to hunt game. The rye will be just about ripe for harvest as well. Overall, the county is perhaps not as well maintained as it should be, but Father was a competent administrator if nothing else - alas that was some time ago.”

Ellen wrote:

”Not if you succeed. Income from the county will be sufficient for the Princess’ needs. Once things have quieted, and she has access to her regal funds, she can undo some of the things the current Count has wrought - reinvest in the county. Try and breathe some life into it. We want you to start that process now of course, and Princess Eutropia will carry it forward.”

”So I do not expect you to provide any funds for the Princess, but you may find it’s advantageous to invest in the estate and town. I’ve always found a little investment in the right places, reap rewards after the fact. Often quite substantial ones - and not only of a financial nature. People want to better themselves. Give them a path to do so, and stand out of the way.”

(In practical terms, you are entitled to taxes from the town and, if you fix it, the canal. What you do with those funds is up to you entirely. You can keep it, use it to pay servants, reinvest in the town/canal, etc.)

She’s been ruling the village for a few years now, since her husbands death. He was the honorary Tribune before her, back to the Betony’s. However, as she’s not a noble, she has no real standing, so I suspect Stachys has rather gotten the wrong end of the stick. All taxes and no investment.”

Kamari perks up at the mention of a canal. "My father's the expert, but I have much knowledge of the canals and their workings. Not only are they a favorite theme of my drawings, but the way in which they work also appeals to my sense of wonder. It is almost magical how they facilitate the movement of water, but they can also be a great equalizer in providing water to those in need."

Kamari begins to shuffle through some drawings.

"Do you know the purpose of the canal? Irrigation, power, feeder, carrier, navigation? Or it's shape? Alluvial, non-alluvial, or rigid? Major or minor?" She displays finished pictures of some and scratches out quick examples of others.

She looks at the map again and mumbles to herself. "With the moutains to the east, the canal probably controls for floods to some extent while also carrying away the excess water from the swamps. I can't tell if it's wide or deep enough for transport, but it really should be. Even if it's been neglected, the bones of it should be appropriate for this; see how it runs almost straight away from Lake Stavian. That's not natural at all."

Kamari continues on in a world of her own working out the problem that she feels born to solve.

Yes, in all public locations, Lord and Lady are to be used. Privately you can say whatever has been permitted. For example, Lady Martella Lotheed still likes to be called Lady, even when you’re alone - though she’s not a stickler.

Lady Lotheed considers a moment, ”A woman of wealth and discipline, Baroness Voinum is a retired commander of the Taldan Phalanx. She is best known as the local grump - condescending, detached, and judgmental - but is also a font of knowledge regarding the region’s history. Her family has been in this county for a thousand years. The Baroness is tough to warm up, and she has a bias against anyone young.” (You apply a -2 to all rolls if you are younger than ‘middle aged’ for your race.)

”The Princess’s name does not appear anywhere in these documents. You are working for her, and on her behalf, but to say so publicly would certainly bring the Count down upon you and, at the very least, limit your movements. As far as these documents are concerned, you hired an agent to procure an estate, the Betony Estate and the lands, responsibilities, and titles that come with it. As to where you obtained the money for such a purchase, well there are several of you, and you pooled your resources. Perhaps family money. Perhaps some prior adventuring - though you’ll need a good story if you go that route - people will ask about your adventures.”

Sometimes he seems so intelligent. Others, I wonder if senility is setting in.

Kamari accepts the offered bread and cheese from Anselm, forming a basic sandwich to keep one hand free to continue scratching away.

"Kamari, tell me more about canal work. What sort of labor might we need to get the waters flowing again?"

"Hard to be sure without seeing it, but likely a lot is just grunt work of clearing out plants and debris. After that, there might be cracks to fix along the canal. The most technical and difficult part would likely be repairing any locks or dams."

Kort leans in to hear what Kamari might offer about the canals. He’s knows little of such.

”It all interests me, Anselm. I have experienced such a small part of Taldor, so anything and everything is interesting. Like I’m not sure how to drudge or fix the canal, but will be happy to find out and assist as I can. I’m not much for manual labor anymore, but surely I can find some way to contribute,” Kort replies.

”With more time, I might be able to find magics to help our work go more quickly, but maybe not. I am uncertain. If M’Della were here, I’m sure she’d know,” Kort thinks wistfully out loud.

”And what of you Anselm? What plans do you formulate? In the big picture?”

"At this stage, I would very much enjoy learning directly from our people what they need most, and what skills they have to aid the effort. Of course we will need to invest in initial repairs and labor. I’ve no doubt that will lift folks’ spirits. I suggest we balance what is most beneficial long term with what is most meaningful in the short term."

Anselm considers what he can offer beyond diplomacy. "If it will help to produce public art, or paint some buildings, I can help there. I’m not afraid to get oil on my smock. I may also be able to ask Shelyn for companions who can help dredge the canal or move large objects. They only stay for a short time, but can do mighty work while they are here."

He imagines water spirits coming to suck up excess silt, and smiles.

"Your explanations are more intriguing, but unfortunately in this case the dealer was from Oppara. I just took 'Amor' to be a misspelling of "Armor... ' should have insisted on a discount."

Elen thinks on this for a few minutes while gazing out the window. "Do you think goats would be of any help? I hear that they'll consume anything."

"Yes, I think that would be good too. Or goats. After the Jubilee take in the locals from a friendly distance -- see where we can help people out if they have resources that can help us out. People always feel more confident and secure when they accomplish something that helps everyone, don't they? A little boost in community morale goes a long way."

"I too am interested in finding out the condition of the Pump House -- to make sure it is working efficiently, and to see about the pumps around the canal. We should understand how they work, maybe they all work in tandem some way? Once we get the waters cleaned up and flowing healthily, things will become more sustainable all around, I think."

The carriage stops for the night at a roadside inn, common on the roads leading to Oppara. The food is acceptable, and of course Lady Lotheed puts a cricket at the table, though she suggests you speak of… lesser matters while in the inn. You’ll do the same the second night, and the second inn is even nicer than the first - though neither compares with the Silent Horse naturally.

”It used to be,” says Martella at breakfast, ”That there were fine inns such as this one all the way to Meratt, but no longer. We’ll divert slightly today so as to stay in the public house of a small village near the end of our day. Tomorrow, we’ll sleep under the stars, and then, on the fifth day, Desna willing, we’ll reach Meratt.”

After you get underway again, she continues to answer more important questions.

"Thank you, Lady Martella. I was worried that this relocation was permanent. Now I see it as a semester abroad, to learn the law, firsthand. What I learn here, I can take with me, when I return to my family. And there's much to learn, isn't there?”

”Certainly, though you will always bear some responsibility to the people of Stachys. I know you have not been nobles long, and this is coming as a rush, but nobility is not just one’s birthright. It’s leadership, and good leadership is hard to come by. It’s why I hired a steward almost the day I earned my estate. I’m good at many things, but administering a township? That is not my skill. So I pay a man a great deal of money to do it for me, and to do it in a way that benefits my people. For I am their voice.”

Muri wrote:
”Lady Martella, does the paperwork include your relative, Madame Lotheed? If so, won't that raise suspicions, for your namesake?”

Lady Martella laughs, ”Oh, she’d be welcomed by the Count and his family! She may be a cousin, and not as directly related to this branch of the family as I am, but she’s something of a spell caster, and I am not. A very big deal in our family. Further, she has not cut herself off from the family formally as I have. I am rather something of a black sheep, and wholly unwelcome.”

”Lady Madella Lotheed would be welcomed with open arms. They would assume of course that she towed the family line and supported Maxillar, and of course they would discuss magic theory in ways I could not begin to fathom. Might even exchange spells! My family has a blind spot for arcane casters, especially purist wizards and the like. Why you could probably walk right in and take the place over… if you only carried a spell book in plain sight!” she laughs whole heartedly.

"You raise an interesting point. I am unused to subterfuge, so yes, we should align ourselves appropriately to a narrative," Kort agrees and appreciates the thought. "And is that why you asked us to bring the masks, so that we should wear them whenever we would undertake deeds that might give away our true aims and station?"

”No, the masks are for a masquerade ball to close out the Tanager Jubilee. At least that’s how we always used to do it, and I doubt they’ve changed over-much.”

Lady Martella Lotheed leans back in her seat with a warm smile on her face as you begin to discuss the challenges ahead of you. There is little planning you can do, but you make your intent known - and it is honorable. She interjects from time to time with facts and figures, if she knows them, but most of her knowledge about the region is a decade or more old.

Over the course of the next two days, she’ll also share a little about the family. ”The Lotheeds are an old-blood noble family, with genealogies tracing back to Azlanti settlers, and my siblings will rarely let you forget it. Bartelby himself is charming, graceful, intelligent, but arrogant and casually cruel. He excelled in his arcane studies as a child, and I have no doubt he’s only improved since then.”

”You should watch out for my half-brother, he’s dangerous. Let’s see, who else will be there…” she thinks a moment, ”My sister Cateline is quite shrewd, if she still lives there, and cousin Titus is little more than a bully. Beyond the family, Sir Gul Gusairne is a suspicious sort - he was father’s seneschal and I imagine Count Bartelby has kept him on in some fashion or another. And I suppose Sepsinia’s mother, Dame Crabbe, is a touch overbearing. She lives here.” She points to the map. (Area L)

Later she adds, “While I’m in Cassomir, Princess Eutropia will be making a show of rallying support in Golsifar. Given the city’s military leanings, it is almost certain to support Strategos Pythareus in his bid for the crown. More importantly, the move keeps curious eyes far from you which should give you more room to maneuver, and the time to do it in. So you can see, we’re all working for you now in a sense…”

Kort nods, trying to draw all the information in, but still needing more. This is *very* unusual considering his background and has no previous reservoir to draw upon for help.

"What is it another two or three days until we reach our destination? Where do you suggest we start? I'm not even sure what to expect, much less how to undermine those who need undermining," Kort says stiffly, wishing he had a nice castle that needed taking as if his job were to supply the sappers to take down the walls.

"Kamari, where do you think we should start? You have a noblish sense of things."
