"So there are at least six Senate Aide Badges." Muri points to each person in the circle. "How many total Aide Badges do you have?"
"Seven." Lady Lotheed taps the Master Senate Aide Badge for this set on her shoulder before continuing, "Why do you want to know?" she asks, genuinely curious.
Finally, Muri turns to look at Underfoot, then back to Martella. "I might have to tip a guard to let my dog through. I guess I could also pretend to be blind, and try and convince them she's truly a service animal, but that seems like a lot of work."
She laughs, "No, don't be bind, that will be a horrible inconvenience, just take care of the guards and you should be fine. Why I once saw an iguana from the Mwangi Expanse in the Senate chambers. Most folks won't care, and the ones that do, well, it'll help you take their measure."
"And Lady. If we do need you, how will we find you?" K'Aldrian asks gruffly. "I know you, but I'm unsure how to contact once we meet the enemy...I mean, others."
”I’ll be spending most of my time in the Gallery, to get a good bird’s eye view of things. You should be able to find me there most of the evening.”
She looks at you all and smiles, ”Oh yes, I think this will go swimmingly. Well, I need to be off or I’ll be late. See you inside the Senate! Remember, start by working the room, then the individual. It’ll be easier once they’ve had an opportunity to see you in action. It puts them at ease, like they already know you.”
And with that, she stands, gathers her things (especially the cricket), and heads out the door, moving quickly. The Senate is not far and the walk there is easy, even nice after the refreshments at the cafe.
The Taldan Senate, sometimes referred to as the Senate Building or simply The Senate, is the seat of the powerful senatorial branch of the Taldan government. The structure has existed in one form or another for millennia, though natural disasters, sabotage, and war have partially leveled it several times in the empire’s grand history, leading to many large-scale repairs and revisions. The current senate building is a grandiose, T-shaped edifice constructed from white marble. Ostentatious columns carved with glorious scenes of the nation’s history surround the building on all sides, while a pronounced flight of precisely 100 stairs ascends to the main entrance.
You make your way through the streets to Senate’s Hill, excited at the tasks ahead and the opportunity to rub shoulders with the Taldan elite. Unfortunately, as you get closer, you see… a queue.
While senators may enter the senate building with a minimum of fuss, the process for aides, staff, and other attendees to enter is long and tedious. As you close and show your badges, you get shuffled into an expansive line dedicated to senatorial aides, minor noble attendants, and various others deemed as ‘people useful to people of import’.
The line progresses extremely ponderously, and it looks like it could take hours to finally reach the front. However, your time in line is not utterly wasted as you are beset by dozens of overeager merchants attempt to sell a variety of wares to you and other staffers - mostly novelty Taldan flags and phony pieces of historical memorabilia. Some however are hawking a variety of wonderfully smelling street foods, even though there will be a light supper within.
Several others in the line begin to bemoan the wait, touting their respective level of importance based on association with their affiliated nobles and senators to inspectors moving through the crowd. In most cases, they are ignored to gripe by themselves. In a few cases, they are removed from line, and moved to the rear.
The entire affair is quite tiresome, and anxiety inducing, for you could miss out on some early discussions and other opportunities if you’re stuck in line for too long. Let me know how you chose to pass at least the first hour or so of waiting.
(Feel free to ask Martella any questions you may have forgotten, or chat among yourselves a moment in the cafe before walking over if you wish.)

*sigh* I'm a "useful person," an essential worker, but inadequate preparations at the screening station have been made to allow me to get to work on time. How typical! And as a contract worker, I only get paid for my finished product. Guess I should have read the fine print. I'm sure most of these poor workers don't start earning anything until they get inside. At least my employer provided me with a PPE (personal polished ensemble)."
Kamari stands in line and tries to identify anyone who might know or work for one of their targets.
The "people of import" are always careless around the "useful" people. Surely, some of them must know something.
If Kamari identifies someone, she will try to strike up a conversation, even giving up a few spots in line if necessary.

It’s really hard to know who works for whom, but there is one who seems to stand out. He’s a Lt. Colonel from the uniform, and he’s complaining loudly that High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus needs him. It’s hard to know just how pissed off he is with his ruddy complexion. Or perhaps he’s about to blow his top. He’s just a little behind you in line, not too far back, for now though the guards are likely looking to make an example of him.

"Seven. Why do you want to know?"
Muri smiles. "I only know the names of these people here. If I needed to recall the name of someone I haven't met, because you had more than six operatives wearing the Voritas Badge, that would be good to know."
"Good to hear, about the animals. I've never had to bribe anyone, but there's a first time for everything, if needed for a good cause."
Muri thanks Martella for her time, his mind still drifting over pleasant thoughts of a new experience. Badge in hand, he excuses himself from the gathering shortly after their employer, unless those at the table have more to discuss before heading off to prepare for the Gala.

Standing in line, Muri enjoys people-watching. He can't help but purchase anything associated with spiced meat, breaking off bits to keep Underfoot well and truly underfoot. K'Aldrian nods goodbye separately to the Lady and the cricket, unsure which was more impressive.
He is excited and nervous by the time he clacks his way into the Senate, his cane keeping timing with his right leg as we walks. He notes the structure of the Senate, awed by the marble and seeming wholeness of the design.
While in line, he nods in appreciation. "You see there? That crack and that slightly off-white painting? Those were probably caused in the Rutabaga Revolts of '69? There were similar revolts in Cheliax amongst the halflings at the time. It's amazing how well they have rebuilt the structure, but also, let us note when the Taldan army has failed to hold this seat of power. However, we have always reclaimed her. I am honored to be here. After fighting for this place for so long, it is nice to see it in person." K'Aldrian rubs his beard as he looks to identify other sources of damage and repair from war, which he understands.
"I'm sure most of these poor workers don't start earning anything until they get inside. At least my employer provided me with a PPE (personal polished ensemble)."
Ouch. Too soon.
"Take notice of that loud whiner in uniform a bit back in the line."

K'Aldrian grunts softly in some recognition of the man. Not personally, but as a type. He had seem similar in his years.
"That man is gadfly with rank, nothing more. They come and go by royal decree, but I doubt he's seen combat. He will not trouble us unless we have competition paper pushing and accounting, but I assure you, I would best him there," K'Aldrian informs the party softly.
He leans on his cane, looking around while waiting to enter the affair.
Once inside, he will take the arm of Lady Mama D.
"Stick with me, Lady," he offers stiffly. "I am not used to this, but you might keep me protected so I might find avenues of attack." He looks around the Senate for the party's quarries.

Muri looks over the Major's face, briefly. The next place he looks is over the Major's body, looking for weapons. 'Avenues of attack'? He's not serious. Then again... Then he looks back to the crowds, wondering how spread out they may get once they're inside.
He pats his shepherd's crook, content having the attachable blade tucked in Underfoot's flank packs. Sure hope it won't come to blows. We're just... socializing tonight.

Elen nods, "Thanks for the floorplan. At what point will they have the bottle presented at dinner, and will they have it staged ahead of time?"
”I’m not sure exactly when they will present it, but the bottle will be with the others in the kitchen early on.”
Currently…
Major Kort and Mama D don't see or hear anything of particular note.
You wait in line (image), more or less patiently, for about an hour. It’s about another hour until things begin inside. The line creeps agonizingly slowly as you take stock of the folks nearby. Mostly, they look like you in your fancy dress, with perhaps more quills and fewer weapons - though nearly everyone is armed in one way or another. Your red-faced friend in uniform eventually quiets down, though his complexion remains flushed.
One of the dreary, and extremely ponderous inspectors walks down the line and spots the party. The Vudrani (link) woman notices… something about the group. She walks up to you and pulls all of you out of the line claiming, ”Random inspection,” as she eye’s Muri’s dog.
You lose your place in line as she leads you tantalizingly near the base of the stairs to an open area where she proceeds to inspect you, and your gear - quite meticulously. You are, effectively, alone, somewhat separated from the crowd and any obvious eavesdroppers, though within easy shouting distance of any number of guards. She looks you each up and down carefully, checking your weapons for the appropriate bindings, and generally giving you the stink-eye.
Do any of you do anything in particular during the short inspection?

"Now tell me if your eyes fail you as much as your ears...do you see Abrielle Pace or Duke Centimus in the crowd?" K'Aldrian begins walking with Mama D on a slow and paced reconnaissance mission.
Between quiet but animated conversation with the Major and the well practiced use of her fan, she igives their area a once over, but (I assume) disappointed. ” I am afraid I do not see any of our old acquaintances, My Good Major. Let us hope that younger senses can see our way clear to them.” she is just settling into a bit about the quality of the Northern Roses when the group is pulled to one side. more later

The woman smiles warmly at Elen and Muri, deftly pocketing the proffered pouches and saying in a low voice, ”Why that’s very generous of you. Thanks.” She looks around briefly before continuing in a more matter of fact voice, ”OK, nobody’s within earshot. My name is Kathann Zalar and I work for a common friend. You all look pretty good and should have no problems once you’re inside. Let’s get you inside, shall we?”
Her smile disappears and she again takes on the countenance of a bored bureaucrat. She leads you past the long line all the way to the front. She mumbles, ”This lot checks out, let them pass.” in an equally bored voice to the squad of guards at the foot of the stairs. Without checking to see if she was clearly heard or understood, she wanders off back into the crowd and disappears quickly from view.
The guards, accustomed to such treatment from superiors, allow you to pass without so much as a glance and you’re free to climb the one hundred stairs into the Taldor senate! You join a throng of people all slowly climbing the thankfully shallow steps.
I’ll describe the interior spaces later today, but feel free to talk to Kathann if you wish.

Muri Daybreaker |

Muri blinks once, momentarily stunned at the realization that the Lady Martella has connections even with the Guards. "Oh. OOOHHHH. Right. Nice to meet you, Kathann. You had me there. Are you our only guard friend, or are there others?" The halfling understands that he's not permitted any substantial degree of confidence, not yet, likely not for the rest of the evening, until close of ceremony.

Major K'Aldrian Kort 1ATD, Ret. |

K'Aldrian doesn't flinch as the inspection passes without incident. He continues to make small, empty talk with Mama D. "Well, that courtier's outfit is nicely layered, don't you think?" Kort nods stiffly to some layered and bedecked courtier. "And this is a wonderful evening for this party, have you noticed the soft scent of peach blossoms in the air?"
He continues to droll (unless interrupted) with banal talk until her royal Mama wishes to speak of some topic of interest.
He looks pained at the 100 stairs to the Senate, trying to avoid a grousing face. With helping Mama D, and with a cane's clatter on every step, he begins to slowly climb.
He offers his arm to Mama with every step, trying to be sure to have 3 points of contact with the stairs at every point (2 legs and his cane).

Hundreds of nobles, senatorial aides, and visiting dignitaries mingle within and without the grand halls of the senate. Some are even listed on the map, though you can assume the entire area is thick with various dignitaries, their staff, servants, guards, and other hanger ons. (You’ll notice in the NW corner of each map is a small black dot marked ‘spell’. That’s a convenient device for placing spells or other things with a radius. Just place the dot at the center of the spell, and add a colored aura at however many feet for the radius.)
To give you a broad overview, below are the major sections of the building for tonights activities. You now have one social round, though you may only influence areas at this time though alternatively some of you may be able to begin your tasks if you prefer. The major listed NPCs are all predisposed with senatorial matters or even still arriving however. Please place yourselves on the map in the area where you intend to begin and remember more than one of you may work in the same space to speed your successes in that area - area influences are group checks.
A1. Arcade of Triumphs
This entry gallery celebrates Taldor’s abundant military and political glories throughout the centuries. Banners and trophies line the halls of the arcade, some displayed openly while others rest behind intricate glass cases. Armor stands and display cases add to the countless artifacts belonging to great heroes and soldiers. A score of Taldan Phalanx troops stand at attention throughout the area, acting as both ceremonial honor guards for the senate and guides to some of the military assets on display.
Important NPCs: High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus and Earl Gahez Varima.
Area Influence Skills: Appraise DC 11, Knowledge (history or nobility) DC 12, Perception DC 14, or Detect Magic/Spellcraft DC 14.
A2. Courtyard
Breathtaking gardens surround the senate building. Catered patios segregated by short iron fences and coordinated military displays fill the few open spaces here. There’s also a small hive of bees busily pollinating the exotic flowers and making the world renowned honey used by the senate kitchens. Many of the senior nobles enjoy the breaks between ceremonies in this open green space.
Important NPCs: Lady Gloriana Morilla, Lady Zariyah Clement, and Princess Eutropia.
Area Influence Skills: Handle Animal DC 11, Knowledge (engineering, local, or nature) DC 14, or Perform (keyboard, percussion, sing, string, or wind) DC 12.
A3. Emperor’s Hall
This gathering space before the senate chamber is set aside as the property of the emperor, and features countless statues and portraits of previous grand princes. While formally these chambers are for the use of the emperor, no grand prince has ever maintained an office within the senate building, and the space is understood to be public meeting rooms by silent agreement.
The Emperor’s Hall sees rotating use throughout the night for various deals, and serves as a private space where the you and others can meet quietly. As such there are really none here to influence either individually or as an area.
A4. Gallery (Actually not on the map, but the section is grouped on the map below A2 for a visual reference.)
The second floor of the senate building acts as an observation deck to the events on the main floor, with offices for various senators lining the outer walls. This area of winding passageways is typically open to noble observers and senatorial aides. Much of the gallery is dedicated to entertaining the children of various nobles, with extravagant performances occurring throughout the upper balconies of the senate building.
Important NPCs: Countess Abrielle Pace, Wyssilka the Fantabulous, and Lady Martella Lotheed.
Area Influence Skills: Acrobatics DC 14, Disguise DC 14, Perform (act, comedy, or dance) DC 12, or Sleight of Hand DC 14.
A5. Imperial Archives
The Imperial Archives could have been Golarion’s greatest collection of transcribed knowledge, had any care been invested into its upkeep. Centuries of redirected funding and senate-sanctioned pruning of “sensitive information” has ruined the once immaculate reputation of the archives. This vast library now acts as a repository of haphazardly curated books, senate minutes, and genealogy records left open to the scrutiny of uncaring nobles. During the Grand Day of Exaltation, a host of rising aristocrats and aspiring courtiers here tout their knowledge of Taldan history.
Important NPCs: Duke Leonard Centimus and Viscountess Octavia Nicodemius.
Area Influence Skills: Knowledge (arcana, geography, or history) DC 14, Linguistics DC 11, Profession (librarian or scribe) DC 11, or Stealth DC 14.
A6. Senate Floor
Normally closed to non-senators, the vast, circular senate floor is open to special guests during the Grand Day of Exaltation, and myriad would-be nobles take the opportunity to duck in and live out a few moments of power fantasy, issuing mock legislation or engaging in lively debates from the senatorial chairs.
Important NPCs: Baron Nicolaus Okerra, Lord Remilliard Kastner, and Kalbio from Breezy Creek.
Area Influence Skills: Bluff DC 14, Knowledge (local, nobility, or religion) DC 12, Perform (oratory) DC 12, Profession (clerk or barrister) DC 11, or Sense Motive DC 14.
A7. Servant Area
While several hidden corridors crisscross the senate building, allowing servants to come and go without disturbing the assembled politicians, this area houses most of the storerooms, workshops, and kitchens where the building’s small army of servants bustle around to maintain the facade of opulence. Even this area, though never meant for noble eyes, is of exceptional quality. The gilt has worn thin on most corners, and here and there cheap repairs mar otherwise artistic furniture.
Important NPCs: None.
Area Influence Skills: Craft (alchemy, carpentry, jewelry, sculpture, or stonemasonry) DC 12, Heal DC 15, Intimidate DC 12, Profession (baker, butcher, cook, innkeeper, or porter) DC 11, or Sense Motive DC 15.
Please let me know what you’re doing with your social round as you get settled. I’ve also linked this post to the Tracking Sheet in the Notes tab for easy reference and I’ll post the below spoiler with each post so you know what’s going on in each area. It is assumed that the party is getting together after each social round to compare notes and make plans, so feel free to chat among yourselves even though you’re positioned in different areas of the Senate building.

The intricate glass cases attract Muri's attentions, where he proceeds to linger, while also using them to look through and observe the High Strategos from a little distance. The ease of studying a piece of well-polished armor, then shifting his gaze slightly to look around it and at Maxillar becomes something of a diversion to the halfling.

"You say, better we adopt the stodgy pap of Andoran cuisine than fill the infidels' coffers. I say, the Eternal Rose calls on us to enjoy beauty no matter its provenance. The Stavian or Lotheed who sips tea from a samovar is no less Taldan. Indeed, it is right and good that we look beyond our borders. Share our people's zest for life and delight among even our longest standing enemies."
He pauses, biting into a little hor d'oeuvre of filo shaped like a birds next. "More to the point. Taldor's wealth is in the beauty we create. Our sense of taste, refinement. The world needs that. Your tariffs will make it worthless."
A young aristocrat peels off from his friends and takes up a chair opposite Anselm. He clears his throat, stands formally, and thinks a moment before replying, ”Ah yes, but we must maintain the correct political stance to our neighbors as well. All in life is not about beauty or wealth. There are other matters at hand.” He continues on the same vein for a while before adding, ”Also, there is a subtlety to political decisions that doesn’t reduce well to a short speech. It may well be that the additional tax on that tea goes to provide locally produced art which is superior to that of a simple foreign tea ceremony.”
His friend both jeer and support him in his stance as he exchanges words with Anselm. The two verbally spar a bit before the youth, laughing, gives in on his position, revealing he agrees with Anselm, but was just having a bit of fun in the Senate. Major K'Aldrian Kort 1ATD, Ret. |

K'Aldrian keeps the arm of Mama D, escorting her while berating entertaining her with droll and innate small talk. He keeps his eyes open, mind active (which may explain the banal conversation).
"I've often heard that some peruke powder contains asbestos, while others are pure talc. I've never understood the trend, of course, but that doesn't stop some from doing it," he notes stiffly.
As they walk through the Arcade of Triumphs, he tries to put what he sees into a historical viewpoint so that he might use that to frame future encounters with the people in charge.

Kamari explores the entry gallery and pays little attention to the displays. Instead she focus on the ways to move from steps to the courtyard. She takes notice of which displays attract the largest crowds, and clog up the aisles. I will definitely need to avoid those. After a few minutes it seems clear that the path with token banners and medals honoring non-nobles is least travelled.

Major Kort overlooks the displays and finds there is much there that matches his historical military training. Perhaps because he’s a military man himself, while there another guest mentions that one of the display items, a crossbow marked Dignity’s Barb is a fake, ”Well, a reproduction anyway. The original, a famed weapon of the Seventh Army of Exploration, was displayed in the case centuries ago, but was lost and replaced with this. It’s not a bad copy really, don’t you think?” He goes on to detail the crossbow’s history as the weapon that gloriously slew a raving Kellid warlord. ”Interested in antiquities are we?” A middle aged woman approaches the party and introduces herself as Copernia Vau, the curator of the Arcade of Triumphs. She offers a brief tour of the adjoining restoration room, where artifacts are cleaned and preserved. You are starting to wonder where Lady Lotheed is, when the crowds begin to shift. You follow the drifting nobles with servants in their wake to the courtyard (A2), where dozens of senators, well-wishers, and hangers-on have begun to swirl around the newly arrived Princess Eutropia Stavian (image) and her dog, Taldogis, who slipped into the gala unnoticed and unannounced. Her alert Taldan Foxhound spies Underfoot and sniffs the air in her direction, but does not move from his place at Eutropia’s side.
A woman, standing tall among her noble peers and sporting the finest in Absalom’s fashion (image) (though not as ostentatious as some) loudly clinks a glass, introduces herself as Lady Gloriana Morilla, and declares that Princess Eutropia would like to address the gathering. With the announcement, the crowd gives Eutropia some space, and Lady Morilla, with a certain casual grace, helps the princess climb onto the garden’s stone railing so as to be seen and heard above the throng.
- - -
The princess climbs the railing with poise and turns calmly to face her audience. Taking a deep breath, she begins, her firm confidant voice filling the courtyard.
“My friends, colleagues… and assorted enemies, it is wonderful to see you all out in your finery beneath the beautiful full moon this evening. With any luck, the weather will be the only thing that refuses to change tonight.” She smiles and elicits a few laughs from the generally friendly crowd.
“We have all gathered here to honor Master Kalbio of Breezy Creek, a master artisan and true patriot, for his exquisite skill and service to our glorious empire. Master Kalbio demonstrates so eloquently that a heart may be noble regardless of the stature of one’s birth, and while it may be premature, I hope to be the first to congratulate you, sir, on the exaltation you will see tonight and welcome you into the ranks of Taldor’s long-lived aristocracy.” A fairly young, freckled-faced man (image) blushes a touch at the sudden attention.
Princess Eutropia smiles warmly at the man, causing his crimson hue to deepen, before she continues looking out over the group, “But we gather here to discuss matters of state, as well. Just as the exaltation reminds us that our glorious empire must always look out into the world to refresh the greatness of its leadership, we must all look out into the world around us and see how it has grown. The child-nations our empire birthed - Andoran, Cheliax, Lastwall - have grown strong by examining the great traditions they inherited from our motherland, embracing those relevant to this new world, and discarding those that held them back. So too will we, this very night, examine one of Taldor’s oldest traditions - primogeniture - with eyes wide open, to determine whether it has held us back from the glory and stability our wayward states have found.”
“Our obligation tonight is not about one person or one vote in the senate. It is about the nation we love and about ensuring that nation does not fall behind the times. We are the inheritors of mighty Azlant, and I say that we must work together to avoid sharing that old empire’s fate. Taldor endures!”

"Taldor endures!" Muri echoes the Princess from where he stands, impressed by her speech. He hears something in her that strikes him as egalitarian, which suits the halfling to a tee. When all citizens are considered equal under the banner of Taldor, perhaps all provinces, extending as far as Taldor's borders, will be considered for equal attention.
Not one to wander while someone of authority has claimed the spotlight, Muri remains where he is, occasionally breaking away to pat Underfoot's head. In doing so, he realizes Underfoot is only tolerating the halfling's hand, which, in turn, gives Muri the opportunity to recognize Underfoot's undivided attention upon Taldogis.
Muri chuckles. "Easy now, girl. No time for that. We're here for more important matters."
