Qadira! A land of whirling sands, sprawling coasts, great mountains, and ancient ruins, Qadira is but the western tip of a sprawling continental empire. You've been directed on a mission to Sedeq, a beautiful, open-air city known best as a training-ground for slaves sent throughout the empire. Here is a city of contradictions: luxurious gardens for the rich tended through the sweat of the enslaved. But it's said that the city's markets contain goods hard to find anywhere else in the Inner Sea, making it a favourite port of call for merchant vessels.

It's a warm day as you sit in the shade of the portico outside Sedeq's Pathfinder Lodge, waiting for your briefing to begin. Knowing the dangerous missions the Society often assigns, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get to know your teammates--after all, your life may depend on them!

”It is a pleasure doing business in this town! If any of you Pathfinders have any interest in natural resources or animal products then I am your expert! You can all be glad that I was on a business trip to Sedeq - otherwise it would have been hard to get me!!“ Sadaf says.

Sadaf is a young Dwarf from an Osiriani merchant family that always felt the pull of the wilderness and saurian animals.

He is a stoic negotiator but has an empathic approach. He is very perceptive and understands people's motives which are qualities that are very important as a merchant.

He typically walks around in his lamellar horn armor and during battle usually tries not to attack but use spells and his animal companion ‘Danduun’ instead.

"I hope this is not one of these undercover missions! I am not good at that! And Danduun is really worse!" he says looking at his small dinosaur.

"Well, if it is undercover, that's more where I excel." The elf who speaks wears rumpled, disheveled clothing that seems to have seen little attention recently. His hair is clearly too long for the style of cut, and his eyes suggest he may be nursing a hangover, though there's a brightness deep within as well. "I'm Kolris. Didn't they say there'd be wine?"

"Good to have you on board then! And you do the shadow walking and I do the business negotiations!" he says with a smile.

”What’s under cover?” a small, gnarled mass of woody vines asks. What looks like a face has a puzzled look on it, but the leshy carries the woodchopper’s ax strapped to her back as though it weighed nothing. Moss and small ferns seem to have taken root around the studs of his leather armor, and a dirty cloak emblazoned with the symbol of Taldor hangs around what would be shoulders on a human.

”I don’t see much cover around here,” the leshy continues, looking around at the sandy desert for any signs of life. His face perks up at the sight of another cactus, but she holds himself back and doesn’t go racing off to say hello. ”Or are you saying there’s something under the sand?” She starts trying to lift the sand up as if it were a blanket he could peer under.

Sadaf looks at he vine leshy with wondrous eyes.

"You are a vine leshy! Unbelievable. I have never seen your kind before ... well ... 'undercover' means that you try to use subterfuge to prevent others from discovering your true identity!" he says matter of factly.

"So Danduun here is not undercover!" Sadaf says and chuckles.

A small head pokes over the edge of the portico roof accompanied by a happy sounding squeak.
” Oh! People are here now!”
A small Ratfolk with strikingly pure white fur clambers over the edge and down one of the pillars. He climbs with speed and ease, assisted by a third arm.
This unnatural limb juts out from his back at the base of the shoulder blade. The fur on the extra arm is a little longer and tougher than the rest of the body and it is noticeably more muscular, almost monstrous.
"Good morning! My name is G L thirteen, but you can call me Gillie. Ooo! You look like a plant! The doctor who I used to live with had a plant. It tried to eat me. That hurt, but the doctor fixed me."

Gillie speaks rapidly in an exited staccato manner, almost childlike in his enthusiasm for the whole world around him.

He spies an empty chair and bounds over towards it, and 'bounds' is a very accurate term. He can't seem to decided how many of his limbs to use which leads to a deceptively fast scrambling motion somewhere between a bipedal run, a quadruped trotting, and a spider's scurry.
He plonks down a satchel which clinks loudly then sits, looking around and smiling at everyone and everything.

A youthful, but travel-worn man enters the briefing room. He's wearing a cloak that seems all too heavy for this climate, suggesting that he's travelled from quite far away.

He pauses, and looks around the room slowly taking in the variety of agents he may be working with. He then fixes his gaze on a raptor near a dwarf and jumps back a full two feet.

Whoa... okay. He scratches the back of his head, trying to start over after the mild fright.

We've really got a mixed bunch here. All the better to adapt to any problem I suppose? I just hope this mission isn't largely social, for.... reasons. He trails off, narrowly avoiding saying something denigrating out loud.

Man, with my luck they're sending this lot on some political intrigue. The tree and a raptor are convincing merchants and politicians of a point of view?!? That'll go well...

Completely oblivious to any concerns Avi may have Gillie waves with both arms on his left, his monsterous limb moving in sync with his normal one.

"Hi Avi! You can call me Gillie!"

Gillie's face creases in thought I hope these people will be my friends... the doctor said people weren't always nice... what did the other rat say... oh yeah!

"Would you like a drink? I made drinks! Would anyone like drinks?"

Without waiting for a response Gillie starts getting a variety of flasks, bottles, and wineskins out of his bag.

Avi smiles sheepishly and declines. That's okay. You've already provided me with quite an experience, that I won't soon forget!


In the middle of your conversation, the door to the Lodge opens and a strikingly beautiful woman joins you on the shaded portico. Dressed in fashionable Qadiran clothing, the dark, slender woman favors you all with a slight half-smile. She speaks in a thick Qadiran accent, but her voice is charming.

”Esteemed agents, it ismy pleasure to receive you here in Sedeq. I am Venture Captain Yasmin Kal’al. I am here, as you are, by request of honoured Venture-Captain Adril Hestram. I have been asked to brief you on a situation regarding Osirian artifacts smuggled out of that country and into this one by an individual named Matzal Chaim. The four statues are supposed to be quite valuable and had been previously confiscated by the Osirian authorities for study. We are not sure how Chaim got access to the statues in the first place—-he likely had accomplices inside the Osirian Cultural Ministry."

"At any rate, Chaim brought the statues here. Sedeq is his permanent headquarters, though he spends most of his time traveling abroad. When he is in town, he spends the lion’s share of his time on the Qalli. While most of the city is given over to the human-chattel trade, the Qalli Spice Market is almost as lucrative as the rest of the city combined. Much of the money seen in Sedeq begins and ends in its stalls and processing plants. The saffron trade alone--“

She brings herself up short with an apologetic smile.

“But never mind, this is not of relevance to you. Chaim spends a good deal of his time at the Topaz Pavilion bathhouse. We believe that he uses it as a point of contact with his various associates. Once you find Chaim, you will have to convince him to tell you who he sold the statues to—-yes, they are no longer in his hands, we are sure of that. Time is of the essence—-if Chaim’s buyer sells to others, the artifacts may quickly move beyond our grasp. I hope I have delivered your mission instructions clearly, but if you have any questions, please ask.”

As the Venture-Captain enters Gillie scrambles to put everything back into his bag and then sits upright and unnaturally still while Yasmin speaks.

As soon as she asks if we have questions he relaxes then raises a hand.

If indicated to speak he does so rapidly and without pause for response, curiosity apparent in every staccato word. He counts on his fingers as he goes.

"I have a question, possibly more than one. Who is Matzal Chaim? Why did he steal the statues? Did he know they were valuable? Why did he bring them here? Is spice relevant? Is Sedeq relevant? What is a Sedeq? If he tells us where he sold them do you want us to get them back? Do we have to pay for them? Can we steal them? Is that wrong? Will they try to stop us? Will they try to hurt us? What if they try to hurt us? Where is the bathhouse? What is a bathhouse?"
He stops suddenly as he runs out of fingers on all three hands, glancing around the room at his companions concern growing in his eyes
"Should I stop talking? I should probably stop talking"
Oh I've done it again. They're going to hate me and make me go away. My head hurts.

Bennett slips in before the Venture-Captain begins the briefing but not in time to have joined in on the introductions. Bennett is somewhat an unremarkable human, maybe handsome for his kind but certainly vanilla relative to this crew. He has a bag slung with various tools and a bow over his shoulder. To look at him for any amount of time, you notice a subtle shadow clinging to his person.

Avi listens to the briefing. He's a bit bewildered by Gillie's whirlwind of questions, hoping they don't have the same effect on Yasmin.

I'm guessing he won't be too cooperative, which leads to her implication that persuasion will be needed.

He leaves it at that and waits to see how she responds to the possumfolk's barrage.


Venture-Captain Kal'al listens attentively as Gillie asks questions. A couple of times, she starts to answer only to realise that more are coming. Her eyes twinkle with amusement as she waits for him to finish. "Let's . . . try to stay focussed on the immediate matter at hand," she says. When Kolis drinks the unlabeled Alchemist's Kindness Gillie gives him any hangover he may have had beings to fade and by the time the venture captain has finished talking is entirely gone. As an ethusiastic amateur brewer Gillie has learnt how to 'fix' the people who suffer the ill effects of his drinks the next day.

On our way to the market Gillie shows significant interest in Bennett's clinging shadow and baring comment will try to poke it.

Gillies face creases as he tries to re-call some thing similar "I have seen some fey abilities before! The Doctor attempted to make one of my friends better so he could move like a Quickler which he said was a fey thing... but it didn't work at first and the legs kept breaking. He tried lots of things and I think something worked in the end."
The creases disappear and His happy curiosity returns quickly as though it had never left.

Gillie has a shield slung across his back but no obvious weapons. Closer inspection wouldn’t spot the blade attached to his tail and possibly recognise claws and teeth which are sharper and more prominent than typical for a Ratfolk


After a brief stop for supplies, you enter the Qalli Spice Markets. The glorious scents of the market are a pleasant distraction from the screams of slaves being flogged for perceived misdeeds.

Located in the southern quarter of Sedeq, the market is larger itself than most cities, and the merchants here offer the best prices in all of Avistan, as well as the widest selection--including some items that otherwise cannot be found without crossing into Casmaron. As you walk through the market, the silver-tongued merchants try all manner of persuasion to entice you to purchase their wares.

Following the directions you were given, you easily find the Topaz Pavillion bathhouse. Your timing is perfect, as a man clearly fitting the description of Matzal Chaim is just emerging. Seeing you standing across the street, his eyes go wide with fear and he flees back into the building!
