Welcome everyone, I hope you all will enjoy this rather unique module. There should be ample opportunity to role-play and I want to let it breathe a bit for that reason. I'll try to get a feel for everyone's level of involvement and interaction and not try to rush the encounters. When combat does occur, I hope everyone can commit to checking and posting on a daily basis.
My own PbP combat style is to try and respect initiative order in resolving actions rather than just simple posting order (unless the sequence of events would benefit significantly otherwise). I'll roll initiatives at the start and some saves (or opportunity attacks) if they will affect my further actions in the turn to keep things moving.
Make sure you roll for your actions in the order they occur. (Requested saves first and please do critical confirmations either immediately after the threatening roll or at the end of your attack sequence. Just be consistent. I will do the first method.)
Make sure you keep your tagline updated with the current value for your Saves, Perception, Initiative, and Armor Classes. Treat it as your verbal response if I were to ask you what the value was in a face to face game, because that is how I'll treat it. But don't worry about conditional modifiers like cover or prone, I'll handle that stuff.
Feel free to ask about anything in the discussion threads or if you think I've ruled incorrectly or made a mistake. You likely know your character better than I will. I'll make corrections as necessary, but I think we all know there are still some rules that are up to the GM's discretion. Also, let me know if you need to take a short break from the game for any reason.

Sorry, sick baby last night. I'll make sure to get her character sheet uploaded tonight.

![]() |

No problem, Leosa. As soon as you can please put up a detailed tagline and a character sheet for your "GM baby". :)

![]() |

We should be up and running.

![]() |

@Leosa: AWESOME character! I was always interested in the Gloomblade, and the everything else about you is just (blackest-of-black) gravy.

![]() |

@Sihir Thanks. She hasn't been played so I'm still thinking about her personality, but I do know for her the shadow companion isn't some creepy undead. It's an extension of her deep connection to the ancestral home on the shadow plane.

![]() |

Heads up - I will be spending the next week in a cabin in the woods with limited internet access. As a result of this, my posting may be somewhat delayed. Please feel free to bit me or delay me if needed and I will jump back in whenever possible. Thanks for understanding!

![]() |

Please forgive my lack of attendance thus far in this game; life's a byakhee sometimes.

![]() |

@DM, would there have been enough time before this encounter for me to have retroactively used my mage armor wand and cast greater false life?

![]() |

Hour per level buffs are fine.
In a while I'll ask for your daily spell routines.

![]() |

Along those lines, I've got a bit of a treat for everyone, but I'll save it for after the this fight. In the meantime....
greater false life: 2d10 + 9 ⇒ (3, 9) + 9 = 21

![]() |

1 down, 53 to go

![]() |

@Leosa Not quite that bad, but you may be on to something...

![]() |

It looks like we have encountered these so far
Survivor - NG - Con*
Crows - NE - Dex*
Bear - N - Str
[Mountain Man - CN - Con]
Rakshasa - LE - Int
Carnival - CN - Wis
I'm not sure about the Mountain Man. If that spot is one of the Charisma cards then we would have all 6 aspects represented. Which would in turn imply we have 9 areas in this demiplane, 1 for each alignment.

![]() |

Just a heads up. I'll be on a cruise next week and may not have much internet access. Should be able to post through at least Monday, and perhaps Tuesday (I'll be in Key West then and should be able to post via phone). After that, may not be able to post till Saturday, so please bot me as needed...

![]() |

Alright, how can we catch the rakshasa in a lie? I’ve been musing over some ideas, but I need more input before feeling confident using them (given the stakes).
1. Will your next answer be true?
2. Was your previous answer false?
These are good for getting a specific answer combination of “Yes - No” (all others are admittances of falsehoods), but I’m not certain where to continue from here. My thought is to try to link another set of similar questions back to the first two, but I’m not certain how that could be used to conclusively prove lying. My gut instinct is to stick with yes/no answers for ease of determining truth and falsehood.
Thoughts?

Not to be too meta-gamey, but the rest of the scenario will take place on different days as you travel between the rest of the locations. In most cases, you be able to prepare before entering the general location but there are also a few other encounters that may happen during travel to and fro. So if you could please give me a sense of what spells you might have active while daily traveling versus what you would cast prior to entering a known conspirator's location.
Since you have made "friends" with the rakshasa, you can rely on him to provide your group with enough food and water for the rest of the adventure.

![]() |

Not-Trixie doesn't have any hour-long spells, so she won't be casting anything unless we think we're close to trouble.
Travelling:
- None
Trouble:
- See Invisibility
- Darkvision
- Heightened Awareness

![]() |

Daedîn has no spells but would travel by Stealth when either sensing an encounter or getting close to a location. If allowed, I’d just take 10 for 33 Stealth and 29 Perception...

![]() |

River will prepare and cast false life on himself every morning, as well as Hunter's blessing on the whole party. He'll select the type of creature for the blessing based on the current goal, so currently constructs sounds sensible for the tin-man. He will select the current demi-plane for the environment. It lasts for 10 hours and gives the following benefits;
+2 sacred bonus to attack, damage, Bluff, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival against creatures of the chosen type
+2 sacred bonus to initiatice, perception, stealth and survival while in the chosen environment, i.e all the time (hopefully!)
He will leave a level 3 slot open every day so he can take 15 minutes to prepare remove disease / blindness / curse if required.

![]() |

Leosa will have Lamont scout ahead, keeping ahead a couple hundred feet unless he spots something to report or she calls him back (most likely a shout at the start of a fight.)

![]() |

Travelling:
- None
Trouble:
- Mage Armor from wand

![]() |

My first inclination was to attack...he said this was a duel but not to the death, so I assume he’d either stop before killing us or stop once we knock him down a certain amount of hp...diplomacy isn’t my forte and I wish to remain hidden as my sneak attack will come into play if I stay concealed...so I guess I’ll stay hidden and await his reaction...

![]() |

Apologies for my absence, I've had a very busy last few days. How busy, you ask?
So busy I ended up in AUSTRALIA!

3rd - ?, fly, invisibility sphere, fireball, ?, major image*
4th - greater false life, locate creature, ?, ?, Tenebrous shadow Conjuration*
5th - ?, Tenebrous shadow Evocation, mirage arcana*
Trouble:
- use of mage armor wand
- use of lucky number wand (primary characters only)
Cantrips - read magic, prestidigitation, detect magic, ?
1st - dancing darkness, magic missile, ?, ?, ?, sure casting, ?*
2nd - umbral weapon, frost fall, flaming sphere, locate object, ?, ?, ?*
3rd - clay skin, ?, ?, ?, ?, shadow Enchantment*
4th - greater invisibility, ?, loathsome veil, shadow Conjuration, Tenebrous shadowform*
5th - ?, Tenebrous shadow Evocation, Persistent phantasmal killer*

![]() |

Sihir, do you want to steal shamelessly from Not-Trixie’s spellbook during this adventure? All she would ask would be the chance to shamelessly copy spells from yours. X-D

![]() |

Oh; sure. Why didn't I think of that?
Not too much for me to pick up, but:
1st:
- grease
- snowball
2nd:
- Aram Zey's focus
- darkvision
- lipstitch
3rd:
- battering blast
4th:
- dimension door
- emergency force sphere
Cost to scribe: 40g to pen lipstitch into my Tome of Dissolution, everything else is effectively free because Blessed Book, baby!!!

![]() |

I'm gonna take a different tack as we need to get some damage on this dude. I've got weapon finesse with my dagger; with a flank, my sneak damage comes into play. That'd be 1d4+7+4d6 every time I hit; I can only attack once this turn but on the following, provided I can stay in a flanking position, I'll have 3 attacks per round and can maybe get enough past his DR and regen to bring him down. But it also looks like he can cast fear at will, so not sure if I'll be around for long...
Leosa, if both of us make our saves, if you can move Lamont, I'll get in his flanking position...and maybe we'll have better luck...

![]() |

Thanks, Not-Trixie... being invisible, I can stick with my bow and my attacks should carry sneak damage, so hopefully most of my shots hit...if I make the save...

![]() |

Sorry about the darkness; I thought Low-Light Vision was enough to ignore its detriments. I take it I was wrong?
As for halting his regeneration, I don't know if I can help any.

![]() |

Since it appears his regeneration is tied to his Lawful protections, I think Leosa’s summoning spell is our best shot...all I have is an acid flask but since he’s no troll, no help there.
But if we can keep him ‘dead’ long enough to find his token and collect Marzalee’s token as well, that should be enough for us to complete our mission...

![]() |

But if we can keep him ‘dead’ long enough to find his token and collect Marzalee’s token as well, that should be enough for us to complete our mission...
I agree with that.
But then he will maybe hunt us down.

He might...but the way he was holed up before we arrived, I got the idea he was scared of Marzalee and was pretty much a homebody...but I could be wrong 'bout that...

![]() |

In response to Daedîn (from Gameplay), you now have four of the seven tokens needed to find the striding fortress. See here for the list again.
On a related note, we are progressing through the module more or less at the rate I expected, thanks everyone for continuing to check in on a near daily basis. I estimate we are halfway through the content.

![]() |

@Sihir Not much more to relate about them. Low will save, high reflex save.
Elemental Traits = Immunity to bleed, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning. Not subject to critical hits or flanking. Does not take additional damage from precision-based attacks, such as sneak attack. Elementals do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

![]() |

Any sweet consumables or anti dragon gear?

![]() |

Some scrolls of death ward and restoration might not be a bad plan either. Other than that, I’d love to snag a few scrolls that Not-Trixie / Sihir could scribe into their spell books and share with the other. But I’d recommend saving those “extra” scrolls until we’ve exhausted everyone else’s options.

![]() |

Some scrolls of death ward and restoration might not be a bad plan either.
Unfortunately they only have up to third level spells available otherwise I'd agree. At level 3 remove blindness/deafness is always good to have (River has one scroll already), and if we're to face a dragon resist energy (communal) might be nice (although it still vexes me that shamans get resist energy but not the communal version, grrr). Remove disease from a scroll is risky due to the caster level check, that's why I usually keep a level 3 slot open to prep it in 15 minutes if required. Maybe a potion of fly for anyone that doesn't have a way to fly?
That said extra spells for our wizards' spellbooks is probably the most directly useful thing, as I expect we already have some energy resistance ability available and while contingencies are nice to have, they probably won't actually come up

![]() |

I realize that it is difficult in PbP to come to consensus on an open ended gift of 4,400 gold worth of items. While you are figuring it out, I'll just freeze any items use during the current encounter we are moving through. I figure you probably want to plan for the "final" battle anyway. So keep on sorting it out. :)

![]() |

Some Restorations would be a safe bet, scrolls or potions.

![]() |

I apologize for my LOOONG absence; I haven't been feeling up to snuff.
Would anyone mind kindly catching me up since that's easier than processing 44 new posts?

![]() |

I'll jump in. Essentially, after helping the Nightpeddler's slaves escape into the desert, drawing off his guards, you now face the Nightpeddler in front of his tent at dusk. He has levitated and drawn a wand.

![]() |

My daughter is headed to the hospital. I'll try to update tonight, but it might not be until tomorrow.

![]() |

@Leosa Hope everything is alright. Join us when you can.
