Ranok thinks on that for a moment. "Nah. If whatever is in there wants to be locked up, it can stay in there till we're done. I say we head down stairs."


As you descend the stairs The air feels thicker, heavy with ugliness, and the air is stale with a noticeable scent of decaying flesh. Stairs bisect a bell-shaped foyer that opens into a broad rectangular chamber with wickedly spiked walls. The rectangular section recesses into the floor almost five feet below the foyer, creating a tiered section of ledges adorned with rows of statues. In the center of the room, a three-foot-tall iron furnace stands atop a marble dais belching out gouts of toxic-looking smoke. A moat filled with a curious bubbling liquid surrounds the smoky brazier.

While Rhen is looking down the hallway, Niu casts Detect Magic and examines the altar and moat.

"I wonder who set off the trap and how long it has been going off? Strange than none of the smoke was filtering up the stairs, but I suppose we should be glad of that.

Likely, it was that ghoul barbarian. A poison smoke trap wouldn't affect him at all. Maybe he was only recently arrived and hadn't progressed far in the attempt to break this shard."

With the smoke and bubbling out of the way, Niu heads over to look into the fountain.

In the center of a thirty-foot-diameter antechamber is a large green transparent crystal. Large iron chains extend from the crystal into the ceiling, holding it a few feet above the floor. Within the crystal is a heavily tattooed man dressed in a hooded robe of archaic style. A piece of the crystal is broken off, exposing the man’s hand, and tiny fragments of the broken crystal are scattered about the floor.

A voice you have never heard before speaks to you. It is a form of telepathy that originates in your head. "A reckless necromancer broke the ancient seal entombing the Whispering Tyrant."
