This is a PFS Cottonseed recruited game. This is the for the horror version of the Mosquito Witch
Amada Caradulyn |
Not sure if it will matter much here, but I did build this character with the Ancestral Longevity Elven Racial feat, so if there is a particular skill our party seems to be lacking that you think may be useful, let me know and I can become trained in it during daily prep.

When you get a chance, can you please fill out the info on this slide? Thanks.
As for our new PbP member, I'm sure you will pick it up quickly. Its pretty similar to real time games except there is typically less focus on player order for turns and the games take a long time.

Picking up a scroll of harm from Spells School for this scenario.
Amada Caradulyn |
Technically fully invested in the School of Scrolls but that doesn’t matter much since my consumeables are just going to be an Antitoxin and Antiplague respectively. Can never be too save when vermin are involved.

Buckler: This very small shield is a favorite of duelists and quick, lightly armored warriors. It’s typically made of steel and strapped to your forearm. You can Raise a Shield with your buckler as long as you have that hand free or are holding a light object that’s not a weapon in that hand.
Bow: You must use two hands to fire a longbow, and it can’t be used while mounted.
So, looks like, yes you can fire the bow, but as long as you're actively using the bow, you can't raise your shield.
Amada Caradulyn |
I'd like to clarify as well that you can use a free action to Release the bow with the buckler hand, freeing it to Raise a Shield in the same turn. You may need to re-grab the bow using a more expensive action on your next turn however, but since a bow is listed at 1+ hands I'm assuming it can be held but not used by just one hand while your buckler is raised. (I'm on mobile and I'm having some trouble finding the actions to ready a weapon to strike online.)
You release something you’re holding in your hand or hands. This might mean dropping an item, removing one hand from your weapon while continuing to hold it in another hand, releasing a rope suspending a chandelier, or performing a similar action. Unlike most manipulate actions, Release does not trigger reactions that can be triggered by actions with the manipulate trait (such as Attack of Opportunity).

So, here is a weird question. I plan on utilizing combat maneuvers during combat, in particular grapple. How do we want to handle that? Do I just put the grapple first in the action chain and then put a grapple and attack in the second action and so on?
Example:
Action 1: Grapple (Athletics check)
Action 2: Grapple (Athletics check) || Flurry of Blows if grappled
Action 3: Grapple (Athletics check) || Flurry of Blows if grappled
000dafi03 |
Just keep grapple and attacks together, for example.
grapple, first attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
grapple, second attack: 1d20 + 8 - 5 ⇒ (12) + 8 - 5 = 15
grapple, third attack: 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (17) + 8 - 10 = 15
attacks if grappled: 1d20 + 8 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 8 - 5 = 14
attacks if grappled: 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (7) + 8 - 10 = 5
attacks if grappled: 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (14) + 8 - 10 = 12
If you don't want to keep grappling until successful, just stop your grapple attempts before the third one and do your attacks. Be careful with this though, as critically failing a grapple check is bad news and they all suffer and contribute to MAP.

While we’re getting some quick rules stuff out of the way, might as well check an assumption I had about thrown weapons with everyone here. Currently I’m operating under the assumption that Javelins and other such fare are not consumed upon use, which would mean that outside of extenuating circumstances they should, presumably, be reusable if salvaged after combat. If anyone knows if this was confirmed or denied somewhere in the rules, I’d love to hear it; otherwise just let me know if javelins aren’t salvageable here and I’ll buy more if deemed necessary.

Update on the Bow question now that i have the book handy; page 279 under "Hands" clarifies the Bow rules, saying the following:
You can hold a weapon with a 1+ hands entry in one hand, but the process of shooting it requires using a second to retrieve, nock and loose an arrow. This means you can do things with your free hand while holding the bow without changing your grip, but the other hand must be free when you shoot. To properly wield a 1+ hand weapon, you must hold it in one hand and also have a hand free.
Pretty much just confirms what we had already assumed. Leave it to Paizo to have the clearest description of how a weapon works be in a different subheading. +\

Ammunition
Source Core Rulebook pg. 559
These magic items are ammunition for ranged weapons. Each item’s stat block includes an Ammunition entry that lists which type of ammunition it can be Crafted as, or “any” if it’s not limited to any particular type. All stat blocks for ammunition omit the Usage and Bulk entries; use the standard rules in Chapter 6: Equipment for the type of ammunition to determine reloading times and Bulk.
When using magic ammunition, use your ranged weapon’s fundamental runes to determine the attack modifier and damage dice. Don’t add the effects of your weapon’s property runes unless the ammunition states otherwise—the ammunition creates its own effects. Magic ammunition deals damage on a hit normally in addition to any listed effects unless its description states otherwise.
Regardless of whether an attack with magic ammunition hits or misses, launching the ammunition consumes its magic. Magic ammunition is made of normal materials, not precious materials, unless stated otherwise.
So arrows are ammunition, but javelins are not and the rule about it being destroyed is a specific rule for ammunition.

Be aware that the "map slides" in my tagline are a little more than "map slides" for this adventure. There is a link for theme music and hopefully mood setting images.

Going to be using this alias to track my Animal Companion's stats and actions during combat. Would have brought it up before getting on the boat but missed the chance to.

Sounds good, thats pretty common for 1e PbP and I imagine the trend will stick with 2e as well.
Also keep in mind that I'm pretty sure "horror" is pretty easy to simply ignore in this format, especially when you might only check in once a day for a minute or so, so I'm trying to be creative on what might work for building the feeling of a horror game here, kind of a fun mental challenge actually.

As an aside, considering secret rolls in a tabletop setting would be kept secret from the players ad infinitum, I’d assume you could potentially just roll it out IRL and tell us the results without needing to post it; however keeping it in a spoiler tag would probably be a decent backup in case a player thinks the GM is rigging the rolls against them after a string of bad luck. That said, I’m partial to the first option since I have no reason to suspect GMs of actively trying to kill characters until proven otherwise, and this type of arrangement is built on a relationship of trust regardless.
Just my two cents on the matter. Also, I appreciate the little details you’ve been adding to the setting, so rest assured that they aren’t lost on me. +)
Lastly, for anyone wondering, Amada’s constitution is an 8, so I wouldn’t put it past him to be still a little drunk after drinking half a flagon of cider the day before.

Sorry, I'm soon to retire from PbP due mostly to my new hours at work in addition to burnout. This week was especially hard because I had to put one my cats down on monday.
Hamir Crookfeather |
@ GM Zer0darkfire - I am sorry to hear of your loss and burnout. Take care of what you need to in real life. I am enjoying this game and look forward to its conclusion, but I am fine with a slower pace if it makes things easier for you and allows you to invest more in the completion of the game.
Amada Caradulyn |
Sorry for the delay in responses, had to run a society scenario for my LGS and forgot to check up for a few days. I should be posting regularly again now.
Sorry to hear about the situation GM, but as said above, take as much time as you need.
000dafi03 |
Sorry about the delay, my schedule is different November 4th and 5th and I haven't been able to post
Amada Caradulyn |
Apologies for the low posting frequency this week, a local con I’m running two games for is happening this weekend and I’ve been awful with time management due to prep work. Should be wrapped up Sunday though, so I should be back to normal afterwards.
000dafi03 |
I'm also slow posting; my partner is very sick with some kind of stomach flu and between that and covering part of her shift at work, I don't get a lot of time to post.
000dafi03 |
I kind of gave up on the extra horror elements; I've been much too tight on time for posting and just want to make sure you guys get to finish the scenario, which, by the way, is almost over already!

Go ahead and roll your Dayjobs and I'll add the result to the chronicle.
For reference, Earn Income is a DC 14 check and a success will earn 35 copper pieces at level 1 (unless you're a field commissioned agent)

Herbalism Lore to make some useful salves and such for folks in the town who might need them as the mosquito plague winds down: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Yeah a swing and a miss sounds about right for Amada this adventure.

Library Lore: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Thanks Guys!
Unfortunately, I gave you the wrong PC#. Hamir is 90900-2004
Otherwise, the chronicle looks good. Thanks for running!
000dafi03 |
Sorry for the late response, I reported as the correct PC as I noticed the discrepancy, but I'll update your sheet as well
