1)So here is the deal. I started a RotRL game, and people stopped posting. So I shut the game down. As such, let me be very clear on one thing about my DM style. I post to tell you how the world (and its inhabitants) respond to what you and yours are doing. I WILL NOT push you along. Not my thing.
That being said, I am looking for players who will take an active approach to the game. Who will explore the dungeon and tell me what they're doing. I'm looking for 4 posts a week (preferably on weekdays). I don't tend to post on the weekends, so grace period there. I don't care what the posts are, either. If all 4 of your posts are roleplaying, great. That means you're still invested in the game. And that is what I want.
2) Also, as the title says, I am looking for PLAYERS, not characters. If you post in here and say, "Oh, here's my character, please consider it", I'm going to ignore you. I firmly believe that the group of players should build a party together in chat (I usually give about 2 weeks for this) to fill the roles. I have 1 players lined up, and I'm looking for 4 or 5 more to fill the rest of the "table". Again, please do not post here about your character. Only post here if you can commit to the game.
2a) Now, I know that not everyone who signs up will make it through. Real life gets in the way of the game. I get that. And there will be breaks from the game during major holidays and such. However, it you can't post, or don't think you'll be able to post, I expect you to say something. Doesn't need to be much, just a quick "Won't be on much for a few days/weeks, real life stuff" is all it takes.
3)All that being said, if you've made it this far and haven't given up on me for being an overly pompous @hole, then we can continue to character building.
1) Paizo only with a few exceptions to follow. I prefer Core stuff, but I’m down for anything…. anything that fits the theme of the campaign. If you make a gunslinger, that’s cool. If you make a gunslinger that is modeled after Al Pacino, I’m going to take my proverbial DM finger and proverbially flick your character off the proverbial map and tell you to make something else. Anything not from the Core Rulebook has to be from a book I own, which is most of them. I have pretty much everything except the player companions and gazetteers. Just ask.
Non-Paizo allowed sources: 3.5 Eberron races (Warforged, Shifter, Changling) and their racial feats. These are done as is from the original source material. Possibly some changes to feats if the level (or BAB) requirements call for it.
2) You will discuss your party amongst yourself. I don’t pull punches and I won’t change the AP to compensate for the party make up. Don’t have a rogue? There will still be locked doors and traps. Don’t have a controller? There will still be mobs. Keep this in mind while you’re discussing your party make up.
3) The technical side.
22 point buy (not a typo)
2 traits
Full HP at level 1
Roll for starting gold, minimum is 150
No evil alignment (prefer no CN; but if you think you can pull it off, I’ll let you try)
4) Once you have your character nailed down, I want you to tell us about them. The info I'm looking for is: Why are they adventuring/willing to adventure? Why are they adventuring here? What do they want? (Short term and long term) And this last one is both proverbial and literal. Do they want safety for the village? Great. Do they want a Rod of the Sunlords? I'll work it into the game eventually. So give me a break down of both the characterization and the mechanical progression you hope to make.
5) Background skills are allowed, but only for Craft, Perform, Profession. And only if it's not related directly to your class. I think that works against what this option is going for. So, if you're a Bard, you can't use your background skill in Perform. If you're an Alchemist, you can't use your background skill for Craft (Alchemy).
6) Standard multi-classing.

Disclosure: I have GMed the first 3 books of this campaign in a RL game, and I am familiar with its entire content. I can, however, keep player and character knowledge separately - doing so at the moment in a Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign.
I am very enthusiastic about collaborative party and character creation, not just mechanically but also in terms of backgrounds, connections, relationships.

I've been on the forums for quite a while. I've never run Rise, as everyone in my group has run through it at various times, and though it was really popular on the boards a while ago, I haven't seen a new one in a while.
About me:
I'm currently in one game as a player, and have applied to a second. I've been GMing two games, but those progress more slowly between collaborating with a co-GM and working on an entirely new setting. I've been in several past games that have died out, but if you want to take a look, I've been quite consistent even through job changes and kids. I appreciate that you thought about your post frequency rather than saying the usual once per day, and I game that's a bit slower, but consistent is more appealing than one that dies before the end of book one.

I was in one RotR pbp but it seems to have stalled, which is ironic since I was recruited with another to fill in for a couple of players that had left shortly after the first encounter.
I was playing an arcane caster with the barest sprinkling of healing. But I’d be willing to try a different hat if needed.
robothedino
Thoroughly interested- the ethos of the game as described fits my druthers quite nicely.
I have absolutely 0 familiarity with Rise of the Runelords, for better or for worse; in terms of the themes and moods that trip my trigger, I like a mix of dark humor, desperation, and always salted in a measure of sincere hopefulness. Collaborative character design is a great measure, in my opinion- my biggest gripe with most games is the sense that the PCs are more like a bunch of strangers on a train rather than a band of brothers/sisters (not to suggest it needs to be "all for one, one for all"- sibling rivalry is as old as Cain!).
Color me intrigued!

I played RotRL years ago but we stopped around 7th level or so and I cannot remember anything beyond the fact that it starts at Sandpoint and Goblins make an appearance.
I am new to PbP. I'm in one game at the moment as a player and I am available for more. I love writing and building a character from the ground up with less emphasis on backstory. I enjoy a balance of social interaction, problem solving and combat. System mastery is fun and character optimization is cool but not to the point of min-maxing. It's more important for me to have good options for contributing to a group than being perfectly powerful.
Pixie Rogue
I don't like creating my character in a vacuum. A mandate to have a PBP "Session Zero" to collaborate and build characters as a group - even if they intentionally don't mesh well - is very interesting to me.
I have to confess that I have also been in a number of aborted RotRL games, including one that had (iirc) four or five different Game Masters before it finally gave its last gasp, so I'm familiar with a fair bit of the AP, but I also believe I can keep my player knowledge and character knowledge separate.
I'm literally willing to play whatever character the party needs. There are so many class and race combinations that I haven't had a chance to play yet - I'm always looking for something new to try.
Posting rate should not be a concern - you are welcome to check any of my several active aliases to see how often I touch the boards nearly every day.

I'd also like to express interest. Most of my play in Pathfinder over the decade has been through homebrew settings, so modules and APs are nice and fresh for me!
Slayde77's inquiry above is one I must second. What I can say is I generally prefer playing cerebral characters to martials (though spheres of power/might, if permitted, would make me willing to play a meat shield).

Just finished this a few months ago, but I'd love to be involved in it again. I really like the idea of having the players create characters together and create a great story.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Also, how long will you be taking submissions for? Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see that in the OP.

I tried to run this back when the anniversary edition first came out and I ran into the same situations.
I post to tell you how the world (and its inhabitants) respond to what you and yours are doing. I WILL NOT push you along. Not my thing.
I can totally dig that. I have issues with this myself.
I can commit to 4-5 posts during the week, maybe once on weekend.
I usually like divine caster types or support
Adderyn
Dot for interest.
I really like the idea of building a party of characters together, as it allows for shared backgrounds, etc.
Your posting rules are fine, maybe even lighter than I'm used to.
I'm currently playing in one other PbP game. I was starting a second, but the GM seems to have cast "Vanish" before the first encounter even really began.
I typically lean towards martial and skill monkey sorts, but I'm not against playing an arcane or divine caster if the group needs.
TheKnigthDude
Hello there, I am certainly interested. I really like having the prep time where PCs can all work together and tie into eachother, or at the very least not step on eachother's shoes.
Most of my experience tabletop experience is through virtual tabletops (roll20, etc), so I am rather new to strict PbP, but 4 post within week should be more than doable from my part.
Syrus Terrigan
I'll throw my hat into the ring. It's been quite a while since I PbP'd, and I now have some time I can dedicate to it.
I haven't done a cooperative 'Session Zero' in almost fifteen years. It would be interesting to see how that would work nowadays.
Generally speaking, I play human characters, and prefer martial- or divine-oriented combatants.

Well then, with all the interest, let’s talk party dynamics.
What kind of persona are people looking to play?
Myself, I’m feeling someone book taught but looking to see more of the world now. Probably an out-of-towner there to see the festivities.
I’d like to play something arcane, but I could maybe do Something roguish if persuaded.
Maybe something non-human if allowed.

I'm going to reach out to the players I'm interested in having join to come and have that discussion amongst themselves.
The pro and con to these threads is largely the same. Lots of volunteers. So I'm sure to get a good selection of players. But some of you will have to suffer the disappointment of not being chosen.

I'm interested! I've played games for about a decade. Familiar with Pathfinder and ran the first book of Runelords years ago.I'm a Private Investigator so I spend a lot of time staked out on in front of peoples houses for hours on end, so finding time to post won't be an issue. I love the idea of choosing players, facilitating friendships outside of characters can only strengthen the game. I'd love for the opportunity to join a dedicated game as I've recently moved away from my typical gaming group and can only do so much over skype. Either way, I wish the best for this game!

Is this indicating that if we haven't been contacted already, we won't be, and the cast is set? Just want to know if I should be looking for other trees to bark up- in either case, best wishes for a good game.

Oh, yeah. Check out the Discussion thread. They finished recruiting Monday and messaged on here that recruitment was closed.

Greetings folks. I'm reopening this thread to find one (1) volunteer to join the cast. Please read the first post or the spoiler below for information.

One addendum to this is the reason why I'm looking for a new player. Both of the players that filled the spot of front line have dropped out. But I am only looking for one replacement. I will contact the chosen player to discuss more, but I will post when I've chosen that player so you won't all be left waiting in anticipation.

Sounds like fun! I'm usually able to post every day, and I'll let you know when I can't. I enjoy roleplay and the fluff side of making a character. Will I need a character that's fully optimized for this, or can I get away with a build that's fun but maybe not the hardest hitter? What classes do you already have? Any skill gaps that need filling?

Halfling unchained rogue 3Gnome summoner 3
Dwarf cleric 3
I didn't look at the individual builds but I'm sure the other players could tell you what skill(s) aren't represented. Since the two frontliners dropped out I would consider building something appropriate for that role since level 3 is still melee-demanding. Plus the three casters would like someone between them and danger.
I'd also be interested in playing.

The flickering of the dim firelight threatens to sputter out when you find yourself looking over at a somewhat unkept man with frazzled short black hair and a somewhat harried green eyes wearing an old well used wooden shield and carrying some sort of polearm which looks like some manner of long handled hooked sharpened weapon along with a mace, a short sword, and a couple of daggers as well as a small brace of javelins one would throw.
He looks up from his drink and his pipe and says bet you don't find a court guard hanging out in this sort of place? Yeah my grandfather won a very prestigious honor for saving some dwarves lord's rear during a battle. The dwarven lord honored my family and brought us to the sky citadel not far from here and placed my grandfather and then father, and then older brother and I at the court as bodyguards to the lord. So one day my brother gets in trouble for fooling around with a high ranked guests daughter and my grandfather comes to me and says Boy you are going to have to say you were with the girl to protect your brother's name. We will get you some coin and a wagon out of here. Find another court and another noble to bring our name honor, so yep that's what I'm doing here waiting for the wagon to take me someplace where some noble worth watching is waiting for me

Jack Forrester
Jack seems like a loner, but he is really a very personable and loyal friend - if you take the time to know him, which few people have.
Word around Sandpoint is:
"Not much is known about Jack Forrester. He is a large man, with terrible scars on his face and hands. He is quiet, but I wouldn't want to mess with him. Keeps to himself mostly. Lives in a little shack on the edge of town. Sometimes I see him out tending his garden, and once I saw him bring three deer in and leave them in the center of town, one bitter winter when food was scarce. He never said a word, never came to take credit, but more than a few of us ate much better that week. Sometimes I see him hanging around the tavern, but he don't seem to drink much. Just sits and watches that barkeep girl. Nah, not in a creepy way, nothin' like that. I don't know, can't explain it. Like I said, not much is known about the boy."
Jack Forrester was always a large kid, very strong and athletic. His earlier years were spent with his parents, his mother kind and his father tough, but fair. A man of very few words, his father taught him what most father's needed to teach their sons, including some basic fighting skills and survival techniques. Often they would go out hunting or fishing together. His father never spoke much about his own childhood, but occasionally his mother would tell a story of how they met, or how her mother-in-law was a crazy old woman. Life was pretty good in their isolated cabin, at least it was until that fateful day.
Returning from a rather successful day of fishing, Jack was inside the cabin when he heard his mother scream. Running out to see what was happening, he saw a group of goblins beating his father, his mother lying on the ground next to him in a pool of blood. Seeing the boy, a few of the goblins turned to the house to grab him too, but his father made a heroic effort to tackle both. Yelling to his boy, the man said "Run!" as one of the monsters put a spear through his back.
Frightened and confused, Jack shut and barricaded the door. In response, they took great joy in lighting the cabin on fire and watched it burn. Jack, too afraid to go face them, waited until the house was burning on all sides. One of the rafters fell on him, burning him badly - the scars still show on his face. He took refuge in the fireplace, and there he found a secret opening in the back that allowed him to escape, unnoticed by the now drunk thugs who were busy collecting horses and whatever of value they could find.
Still hearing his father's voice, "Run!", Jack made his way to a nearby village. The local healer did what he could for poor Jack, but the boy was scarred for life, both physically and mentally. The healer took him in, fed him and clothed him, and helped him return to the cabin to see what, if anything, was left. There was nothing except the burnt remains of his family and their cabin.
Jack tried a number of trades, but nothing seemed to suit him. He joined a militia and learned how to fight. After a few years, he was recruited as hired muscle for a sailing ship. As it turns out, life at sea was not meant for the young man, who was sick every day. Finally, he disembarked at a stop in the small village of Sandpoint. With his meager savings, he bought a small plot of land on the outskirts of town.
Occasionally, Jack would wander into town, looking for odd jobs or occasionally working as a bouncer during some of the more rowdy festivals. Others may still consider him an outsider, but to Jack, he has grown to love his adopted home… and of course, he has a pure hatred of goblins.
