Yes the range penalties are significant for throwing a grappling hook, but the target (a solid branch or outcropping) is stationary and not dodging, so its AC is low and there is no reason you can't just keep throwing until you hit. That would lower the climb DC down enough that you could then take 10 to climb.
With a -14 penalty for range, rolling a 20 is effectively a 6, so with a +4 attack bonus you would hit AC 10, which I think is sufficient.
So, someone confirm that you do in fact have a grappling hook in your gear, then as long as someone has at least a +4 ranged attack bonus we can simply say that it takes another 20 minutes to get everyone up.

GM Rinaldo |

Ah, good, you *do* have it. I was afraid you were going to say, "Oh, I lost that last scenario ..." ;-)
It takes quite a bit of time, but eventually Flaith is able to get the grappling hook secure, and you carefully climb up, pulling Kalkamedes along.
When you resume, do you have Kalkamedes leashed or walking free? If leashed, who is holding him and how far back from him are you walking? Where will everyone else be relative to them?
It has now been just over 3 hours since you started.

![]() |

Once on the other side and walking again, "About time you all have came to your senses and leashed the sleeping mess of a man"

![]() |

Moria, still occasionally groaning from the fall, will walk directly beside Kalkamedes on his left, keeping her eyes to the horizon. She would have donned her armor after making sure everyone was up the opposite side of the valley.

![]() |

Xusius makes his way to the other side after a lot of arduous exertion which increases his desire to learn more magic so he can just fly or levitate around things like these. He says to Moria, "Zou are doing zo well navigating ze pitfalls zis man leads us to, Moria. I weesh zere was more I could do to help zou een zees matters, but I lack ze skills zat zou have. Cheer up, mademoiselle, I am zure we weell have chances to use other skills ere long!"

GM Rinaldo |

After a brief rest from the climb, you recover your ropes and set Kalkamedes on his feet again.
Great bands of stars sweep across the cloudless night sky, illuminating a series of game trails that chase through the mountain shrubs and berry bushes. The brush is getting thick (though thankfully not dangerous like the bramble patch), and despite the meandering path available, Kalkamedes trudges on his straight path.
Moria and Seebonick see the next danger -- a bear, directly in the line the sleepwalker is taking. Though small for a bear, it is still slightly larger than all of you. It sits up, and though it isn't in an aggressive posture yet, you can tell it does not want company.
I've put up a map. No initiative rolls yet, depending on how you address the situation. The dashed line between Kalkamedes and Flaith is the rope. I assumed you stayed a little back to give him room to change direction as needed.

![]() |

"Everyone hold on. Is anyone good with animals?" Moria gestures at the bear in the distance. "The only thing I know to do is try to frighten it off, but I'd rather hope there's a different way."
Would a knowledge nature roll be applicable here?
Know(Nat) if applicable: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

GM Rinaldo |

Moria looks at the bear, and gets a sense that it is nervous and hungry, but probably not a danger to you unless it feels threatened. The biggest problem is that Kalkamedes appears to be heading directly for it.

![]() |

"Flaith, I think this bear will leave us alone if we leave it alone. Let's move our friend here a solid distance to the side."
CMB to move Kalkamedes: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

GM Rinaldo |

You drag Kalkamedes a bit to one side, but he is fairly stubbornly pointing toward the bear. This make take a bit more effort.
Meanwhile the bear has stood up on its hind legs and is starting to look a little upset.
I'm going to go ahead and have us go one round at a time. Moria is shoving Kalkamedes to one side; others can attempt to assist in this endeaver, or take other actions you think might help.

![]() |

Zordlon pulls a wand reading to let loose a magic missile if the bears charge.

GM Rinaldo |

The bear steps back as Flaith tosses the food. It sniffs at the sausage, then begins eating it.
That will buy you a few seconds. Kalkamedes *really* wants to walk through the bear. What are you going to do now?

![]() |

Like, as we try to push him away, he re-angles himself towards the bear? If that's the case:
"Maybe the sleepwalking has something to do with the bear? Give the word and I'll charge it." Moria moves within charge range of the bear, falchion drawn, ready to charge once two others agree. "I'm open to other ideas, but I don't see this happening without bloodshed."

![]() |

Xusius thinks for a moment and then snaps his fingers. He says, "What eef we tried to deestract ze bear weeth some food? Unfortunately I do not have Dancing Lights or Silent Image memorized. They would be most effective for zees."

GM Rinaldo |

The bear is finishing up the snack Flaith threw as Seebonick tries to push Kalkamedes. He isn't very effective, but based on how the man reacts, Moria thinks he might be aiming for a pass or something beyond the bear. It might be possible to get him further along and let him re-angle toward whatever it is afterward.

![]() |

Moria lets out a small battle-cry as she shoves the sleepwalker with all her might.
Bull Rush if allowed, grapple if not: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

GM Rinaldo |

I'll allow that Flaith and Moria grabbed Kalkamedes by the arms and feet and have him in a rescue carry. If you can come up with a way to keep the bear distracted for another couple of rounds, you can run him past along a different path.

![]() |

Seebonickk turns to the party. "Anyone have anymore food?"
He casts speak with animals and tries to adopt a nonthreatening posture towards the bear.
He hurts to the party and whispers loud.
"Psst...anyone have food?"

![]() |

"Sorry, I seem to have forgotten to pack bear snacks." The elf says sarcastically still holding his want pointing towards the ground.

GM Rinaldo |

The bear cocks its head as Seebonickk speaks to it.
Seebonick can give me a Handle Animal check, or a flat Charisma check if he doesn't have Handle Animal.

GM Rinaldo |

That's not enough to get it to stop eyeing you ... can anyone else make a Handle Animal check?

![]() |

No one appears to be trained in Handle Animal, looking at character sheets. Is there anything nearby that we can tie the sleepwalker to while we take care of the bear?

GM Rinaldo |

Not really. Someone is going to have to hold him, or else just let him wander on his own and catch him when you're done.

GM Rinaldo |

Flaith moves up and mimics Seebonickk's actions, though with a slightly more soothing tone of voice. The bear can't understand her the way it can the gnome, but seems to be slightly calmer.
If someone else can give a good charisma check, I'll allow that plus expending 2 full days of rations to keep the bear busy while you pass.

![]() |

Here's hoping!
Charisma: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Moria attempts to be soothing to the bear, but her rough day so far and aching back make it difficult for her to have better than a gruff tone of voice.

![]() |

Xusius will make an attempt to pacify the bear with some rations.
Charisma: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (10) - 2 = 8
He also pulls out his Wand of Magic Missiles as he's pretty sure it's time to kill the damn bear.

GM Rinaldo |

Moria and Xusius attempt to "help", but apparently succeed only in annoying the bear.
Moria: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Xusius: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Flaith: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Seebonickk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Zordlon: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Bear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
The bear roars and charges toward Moria! Double move through difficult terrain.

Everyone is up! Right now Flaith is holding the leash, so must use at least one hand to make a CMB check to hold him back; using 2 hands will grant a bonus. Alternately, you can let him go and catch him when you are done.

![]() |

Two questions. I've seen it debated on if a Barbarian can do non-lethal damage while raging. Is this allowed? Second, it appears that Moria could charge at the bear, but if there were difficult terrain, that's obviously a no-go. Is the path between Moria and the bear difficult terrain?

![]() |

Falchion, nonlethal, charge, PA: 1d20 + 4 - 4 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 - 4 + 2 - 1 = 12
Damage (nonlethal), PA: 2d4 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2) + 4 + 3 = 10
"Seebonickk, I'll try not to, but no promises."

GM Rinaldo |

I see nothing in the rules that says a Barbarian can't do nonlethal while raging - it doesn't require either concentration or a Dexterity based skill.
The area is difficult terrain unless you start on and follow the winding path for your entire move. In this specific case, the path does not connect the 3rd and 4th square of your path, so you can't charge. I've backed you up and you have a readied attack.
Moria moves up, ready to defend herself and the others, but with just enough presence of mind to try not to kill the beast.

![]() |

Zordlon moves forward following the path and activates his wand.
"See, we should have just done this from the get go"
magic missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Xusius fires his Wand of Magic Missiles at the bear as well.
