| GM Rinaldo |
Flaith and Moria wrap the poor pathfinder in some rope and carry him rather like a large, rolled-up rug around the periphery of the briar patch. Once to the other side, they undo his bindings and let him go. He sets out away from the patch, continuing northward.
After another hour, Kalkamedes abruptly turns and begins walking west. His path points directly at a watery bog. Fortunately, Seebonickk notices a glint of moonlight in the water from about 40 feet away, giving you a moment to prepare.
Once again, I'll need a check to bring Kalkamedes to a halt, otherwise he will walk right into the water. A quick check shows that at the near end it is only a couple of feet deep, but gradually becomes deeper. It is 40 feet across in the direction he is walking, and stretches for about 100 feet on either side of you.
Note that for purposes of drowning rules, Kalkamedes is already unconscious, so would start making CON checks to avoid drowning as soon as his head is underwater, and failing two checks would mean he dies.

"This guy... who has the vial with a picture of a fish on it? I think it may come in handy right about now."
Moria will wait, ready to attempt to subdue Kalkamedes if other attempts fail.
| GM Rinaldo |
You believe the vial with the fish would grant a significant bonus to someone's swim check, but it wouldn't help with someone who doesn't realize they should swim (such as a sleepwalker...).
You will need to try to stop him before he walks into the water.

In that case!
CMB: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Moria tries to restrain Kalkamedes by bear hugging him.
I could have sworn I posted this earlier
Xusius

"I could cast Enlarge Person on heem. Zat way he may not need to sweem. What do you zink?"
Xusius dashes up besides Kalkamedes in case the spell is what the others think is worth doing.

Moria will once again lend her rope and assist with tying the unfortunate man up. She speaks softly, an ashamed tone to her voice, "Thank you Flaith. I think this is a good idea, but how do we intend to get him across? We do not know how deep this is, and surely he will thrash, so floating him on his back is not an option."
Moria will look up and down the shoreline for anything that might make a suitable raft. Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
| GM Rinaldo |
Flaith easily restrains Kalkamedes again, and Moria ties him to keep him in place. She then looks around and sees that there are materials that could be used to make at least a small raft.
I'll need Survival or a suitable Craft check to fashion a flotation device, then a brief explanation of how you are going to use it to get him across.
Moria Dolar
|
Survival: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18I wouldn't think Craft Stonemason would be too much help, but if anyone can argue otherwise, add 3 to the check. Possible -2 for makeshift tools.
Moria begins gathering the materials. "I have 50 feet of rope. I think that should be enough to bind Kalkamedes, bind this raft together, and strap him face-up to the raft. One of us could swim behind the raft and push it while the rest swam across. What do you think team?"
| GM Rinaldo |
Moria lashes some logs and reeds together and makes a small but serviceable raft.
Another grapple to pin will allow you to tie him faced up on the raft, then a swim check (won't be too hard, though there will be a slight penalty for his struggling) to push him across. Everyone who isn't guiding Kalkamedes can swim or just take the long walk around as you see fit.
Moria Dolar
|
I am scared to make this roll myself.
Pin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Once bound, Moria puts on a stoic, waiting face. Internally, she's having serious anxiety. The most water I've ever been in before is the baths, how am I going to swim myself, much less push a raft across?
| GM Rinaldo |
While Flaith holds him, Moria pins Kalkamedes to the raft and lashes the rope around him. It should hold long enough to get him across.
Who wants to go swimming now? :-)
Xusius

Xusius will take the long walk.
Zordlon Moonsilver

The other elven wizard walks along with Xusius and carries on a conversation until they get to the other side.
Moria Dolar

Moria stares after the three that just walked off without a word, completely bewildered.
Come on Moria, it's just water. You can do this.
Swim: 1d20 ⇒ 15
| GM Rinaldo |
Nervous as a cat, Moria forces herself into the water. Muttering to herself about elves and gnomes forcing the dwarf to swim, she grabs hold of the raft and carefully guides it across the bog.
On the other side, she stands there, dripping and annoyed, while the others casually make their way around.
Once everyone is back together, are you doing anything other than releasing Kalkamedes to resume his walk?
For reference, it has now been a little shy of three hours since you set out.
Moria Dolar
|
Moria shakes as much water as possible off of her. "Would any of you mind handling sleepy while I try to salvage my rope?"
The Dwarf dismantles the raft as quickly as she is able, not caring about any of the materials except however much rope she can salvage from the construction of the raft and the rope used to lash Kalkamedes, making sure to leave the portion of rope being used to bind him stays in place. GM, I started with one solid 50ft of rope. I've cut it in at least 3, how much rope can I salvage, and how much rope is still around our sleeping beauty?
Once finished, Moria scans the horizons, looking for trees and buildings, particularly resembling the sketches found in Kalkamedes' stove. Take 10 for a total of 15 for Perception
| GM Rinaldo |
Moria, you can recover all of the rope used, so let's say you lopped off two 10' pieces to lash the raft together and hold down Kalkamedes, and have a 30' length remaining.
Moria recovers her rope and tries to dry off a bit as Flaith ties her own rope around Kalkamedes as a leash.
You set back out, and your sleeping ward winds a westward path into a steep mountain pass that climbs several hundred feet. Zordlon notices that the darkness ahead gets noticeably blacker as the surface levels out then terminates with a sheer drop just fifty feet ahead!
Time is 15 minutes since the bog. Kalkamedes is walking directly to a long drop ... how long you can't tell until you go look down, but definitely far enough to be fatal.
Moria Dolar
|
"This guy likes dangerous places" Moria currently assumes Flaith has the leash and starts looking for a safe way down. Once she's made her observations, she stands in his path, ready to stop him if efforts with the leash fail.

Zordlon attempts to stall the man, he reaches into is pouch and pulls out a small clam shell. He opens and drags a finger across the surface of the material inside. He then proceeds to rubs his fingers together concentrating on the ground underneath the sleepwalker.
Casting grease to slow the man down. DC 14
| GM Rinaldo |
Zordlon causes the ground under Kalkamedes to become slick just as Flaith pulls hard on the rope. The sleepwalker hits the ground, and while probably bruised, is in much better shape than he very nearly was.
Stepping up to the edge, you see that a canyon cuts across your path, going for a long distance in each direction, so that going around is certainly out of the question.
You have 2 minutes of Grease, so I'll allow that plus holding on to the rope to bring him to a full halt for now.
I've put a sketch of your situation onto the slideshow. You have a 30' gap to cross, either directly or by going down 70' then back up the other side. The climb on this side looks average, but on the other side the cliff is more vertical making the climb more difficult.
| GM Rinaldo |
None that are over 30 feet tall and which you could easily take down for the purpose, unless you have lumberjack tools and some skill at it. Building something out of multiple trees would likewise require some sort of appropriate skill and tools.
Xusius

"I fear I did not bring any rope weeth me for zis journey. Eet ees a rather daunting task we face now. I have no majicks zat weel help weeth zis barrier. All I can suggest ees to see how much rope we do have and see eef someone can climb down and then up to ze other side. Zat or we look for a way around zis place."
Moria Dolar
|
Moria ponders for a moment. "It looks to me like it does not matter how good any single one of us is at climbing. It looks like we all must try. The trick is, how do we get a sleepwalker down a cliff safely? Then back up again? Do we hog-tie him and lower him to the canyon floor?"
The expression on Moria's face indicates that last statement was a joke in her mind.
Flaith Festung, called Löwin
|
Flaith shrugs and speaks up.
"Most likely lower him down and pull him up.
Getting down will not be the problem with a knotted rope. How do we get up on the other side?"
With that she points to the other side!
Moria Dolar
|
The dwarf's jaw drops. "You know I was..." Enlightenment dawns on her face. "We would have to combine our rope, but that may just work. I will hold the rope on both sides and scale the rock, taking the rope with me each direction. And who knows, maybe our friend here will want to travel along the canyon floor if we let him walk at the bottom."
Xusius
|
"Zat is an excellent idea, Moria! Let us see where he wants to go at ze bottom of ze chasm."
| GM Rinaldo |
If you are going down, having a rope tied off on this side will make the climb check DC 7; if you intend to bring it with you, the last person will have to make a more difficult check. You can tie Kalkamedes up and lower him down.
Once on the other side, someone will have to make the difficult check to climb up with the rope, after which getting everyone else up will be DC 7 again.
I'll go ahead and tell you now, Kalkamedes wants to keep walking on the other side, not travel along the canyon.
Moria Dolar
|
Moria will make the more difficult climb in order to bring the rope down, as well as taking it up the opposite side.
Moria offers her rope to be tied together with whatever other amount is necessary to lower Kalkamedes down to the canyon floor. "Flaith, I believe you should go down first, then we lower our restless friend here, so that you can keep an eye on him while the rest of us head down."
Moria will stand by the rope as everyone else climbs down.
| GM Rinaldo |
So as long as you can make a DC 7 by taking 10, the majority can get down easily. I just need the difficult climb check from Moria. Start with rolling two checks for the trip down the near side, then two checks for the far side. I'll allow take 10 on this as well if you think it will be sufficient.
Moria Dolar

Moria stretches and, upon realizing her hide armor is very restrictive, takes it off and stuffs the armor and rope in her bag and will start climbing down in simple linens.
Take 10 for a total of 13
| GM Rinaldo |
Everyone but Moria uses the rope, climbing down carefully. She then lowers Kalkamedes, who immediately starts crossing the canyon to continue his journey. Flaith holds back as Moria unties the rope and starts down.
Working very carefully, Moria starts to descend, but after a few feet slips on a loose rock.
The DC is higher than 13, unfortunately. Make DC 20 Reflex save to catch yourself or take 5d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 2, 1) = 14 falling damage.
If you make the save, you can try again to Climb down. Once at the bottom, you can them attempt the climb up the other side; the DC is going to be higher due to a steeper slope.
(This is my least favorite part in the lower subtier. And yes, I am using the low tier DC. The upper tier is even worse, but at least folks have more skill points and gear).

Please please please
Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Moria hits the bottom of the chasm - hard - and groans.
"Should've... stretched more.. Does anyone have- ow.. Does anyone have a grappling hook to tie to the end of this rope?" The dwarf slowly stands up and brushes the dirt off.
With the wall being 70ft, I'm also wondering if that's even a possibility. If I were to rage, which Moria's been on the verge of since the water, how many rounds would it take to get to the top, if that would work?
Moria begins pacing the opposite wall of the cliff, looking for the place with the best hand-holds. She looks tense, and her inner frustration is beginning to color her face.
Yeah, level 1 is rough
| GM Rinaldo |
While raging, what is Moria's climb bonus and base speed?
I am also very open to any reasonable sounding alternative solution or unusual use of spells and tools anyone may come up with.
Moria Dolar

Speed of 30 feet, climb of 15 without armor check. If I'm understanding the grappling hook correctly, range increment of 10 ft, going up 70 ft would put the roll somewhere around -14, yeah? Does it seem likely to the party that it could be thrown up that high and find purchase? I see Seebonickk has one if he is willing to use it.
"That... feels so much better. Thank you Flaith."
| GM Rinaldo |
Speed of 30 feet, climb of 15 without armor check.
"That... feels so much better. Thank you Flaith."
If you mean Take 10 for 15, that will not be sufficient. If you actually mean a +15 modifier, break that down and you win. ;-)
Any suggestions from anyone else of things that could help?

Derp. Yes, it is a +5. Ignore me. I had an edit about the grappling hook though. Could that work?
