Moria falls to her knees in exhaustion just after the dragon falls, clutching her shoulder. Amidst her panting, she says, "Koth'Vaul, what is your purpose here, and what did you do to this woman?"

![]() |

Xathos casts Detect Magic on the band on the dragon's horn.
In case it is magic Xusius attempts to use Spellcraft on the item.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 9 + 2 = 16

GM Rinaldo |

Flaith examines the elf and finds no trace of evil on her. The minor healing she provides seems to help, but not enough to rouse her.
Seebonickk looks at the band on the dragon's horn, and realizes it can be removed. Xusius uses his magical sight, and realizes that it is a hat of disguise.
Morian turns and calls toward the gnome. He responds, "My purpose is to escape before she awakens. Let me out, and I'll be on my way. You really don't want to see what she'll do if she regains consciousness."

![]() |

Moria glares at the thing in his prison. "You attacked us. Why should we think that you didn't do the same to her, and she's in there to protect herself from you?" Moria stands and walks towards Flaith, Kalkamedes, and the woman. "How can I help, Flaith?"

GM Rinaldo |

The gnome shakes his head. "You'll be sorry you didn't listen to me. She's a powerful demon with a spell to mask her aura."

![]() |

Moria mutters under her breath, "And you're not exactly what you're describing."
Moria awkwardly moves out of the way, seeing as she has no healing capabilities. She sinks to the floor, resting and cradling her shoulder.

![]() |

Seebonickk looks at the gnome and considers his words.
"Powerful demon hunh?"
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 10
don't think I used my re-roll?
reroll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

![]() |

Xusius shrugs his shoulders as only a Gallic Elf can do and says, "Zo, zou weesh to eengage us weeth your words of meesdirection? Eef she ees a powerful demon, we zhall find out. After all, we have already defeated her. Let us zee what zis Hat of Disguise really hides."
With that said, Xusius walks over and removes the magic band from the dragon's horn.

GM Rinaldo |

Xusius removes the band from the dragon's horn, and reveals that the dragon is what it appears, other than being dead. This was apparently a zombie dragon, with the disguise covering its undead appearance.
Flaith heals the woman, and finally her eyes flutter open. She looks at each of you with eyes of pure white and says, "Please tell me the demon is still contained!"

Know(Local): 1d20 ⇒ 13
"Theres a gnome in a magic circle over there... or at least we thought he was a gnome, as we thought you were an elf until you opened your eyes. If he is a demon, what are you?" Moria narrows her eyes and scrutinizes this woman.

![]() |

Xusius attempts to make a Knowledge check by looking at the elf.
Knowledge(local): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Xusis will then cast Detect Magic with Perception and then use his Spellcraft skills on any potential magic found.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Add 2 to that for Elven Magic if identifying magical item properties. If this involves spells from the Illusion school of magic, add 2 to the roll and subtract 5 if it involves spells from the Necromancy or Enchantment schools.

GM Rinaldo |

The woman looks at each of you, her gaze intense.
Her form shifts, and for a moment she appears to be made of pure light. It shifts again, and she now appears as a tall humanoid female, no longer elven in appearance, but still beautiful. She is armored and well-muscled, but still shows signs of fatigue and weariness.
"I came here hunting the demon Koth'Vaul. I could feel his power leaking out of the circle that was containing him, and had intended to finish the job. His undead dragon caught me by surprise, and I was barely able to drag myself into this circle to use its power to keep the unholy creature at bay. Unfortunately, it also kept me trapped. I sent out a telepathic message for help. Did you receive it? Is that why you are here?"

![]() |

Moria points at Kalkamedes. "We're here because he is sleepwalking himself to death trying to get here. Koth'Vaul is in a magic circle similar to the one you're in, but over there. The dragon is dead after Koth'Vaul ordered it to attack us. I'm much more inclined to believe you over him given the circumstances, and you answered the two questions I posed him completely unprompted, which were why are you here in this place, and who put you in the magic circle. Perhaps your message is what is driving our friend here to this place?"

GM Rinaldo |

She looks at Kalkamedes, and says, "Perhaps ... my power is severly weakened, so perhaps my message could only be received by someone receptive and vulnerable, which he could have been in sleep. If you can free me, I should be able to reverse what I've done and allow him to rest properly. Then we can see to destroying that demon!"

GM Rinaldo |

"I'm afraid I'll need you to let me out first. What little power I have is being suppressed by this circle - it's why my telepathic sending did what it did."

![]() |

"How does one break the circle?" Moria asks, still not rising from where she's slumped against the cave walls. She's still waiting for group approval.

![]() |

Xusius does not have either skill
"I agree, Moria. Ze odd elf zeems more trustworthy zan zat gnome thing."

knowledge planes: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
"She is a ghaele azata, a hunter of demons and undead from the plane of Elysium." Zordlon says once he witnesses her true form. "I'd say go ahead and let her out."

GM Rinaldo |

The azata nods at Zordlon. "You are a scholar, I see."
To Moria, she answers, "Physically breaking the material would do the job. Do you have a heavy hammer or something extremely hard to smash it with?"
You are going to have to do damage to the circle and overcome its hardness.

![]() |

Exhausted, Moria stands beside Flaith and Seebonickk and swings at the circle with her Falchion.
Falchion, PA: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 - 1 = 10
Damage, PA: 2d4 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 + 3 = 10
Falchion, PA: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 1 = 14
Damage, PA: 2d4 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (1, 3) + 3 + 3 = 10
Falchion, PA: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 - 1 = 11
Damage, PA: 2d4 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2) + 3 + 3 = 9
Several swings, for good measure. As long as she sees progress, Moria will keep swinging until it's broken, losing the fatigued condition 36 seconds after the end of combat with the dragon.

GM Rinaldo |

No attack rolls needed, just damage. The stone has Hardness 10, so as long as you are capable of doing more than 10 damage in a hit, you will eventually whittle away at it. Adamantine would make things quicker, but Moria's 2d4+6 will eventually do the trick. If Flaith can get over 10 damage, that will speed things up.
Regardless, since I know you *can* get there, I'll go ahead and push forward.
It is long, difficult work, but eventually you are able to break enough of the stone to disrupt the magic circle. The azata visibly improves once you do, though she is clearly still drained.
True to her word, the first thing she does is to place her hands on Kalkamades' head. After a moment, you see his features relax, and he slumps down. She grabs his arms, and lowers him gently to the ground. "Now he can rest."
The effort seems to have taken more out of her, however, and she staggers a bit. "At this point, I don't have enough power left to destroy Koth'Vaul, but I believe that with your help I can at least banish him from this world." She turns to Flaith. "You are a servant of a higher power. Will you allow me to add my own power to yours, so that you can direct the energy needed to send the demon away?"

GM Rinaldo |

The azata steps up to Flaith and places a hand on either shoulder. She concentrates, and the air between the two of them shimmers slightly.
You have been granted the ability to cast Banishment at CL 13. Feel free to roleplay out sending the "gnome" back where he came from. :-)

![]() |

Feeling the holy power enter her Flaith feels her body burning, but it is a good kind of paun, like the one after a good but hard workout.she slowly walks toward the "gnome" and speaks up.
"Listen, you foul thing. I forgive you. It is not your fault. Now go home and know that you just simply lost. That ordinary men defied you. And now have a pleasant trup home."[/b]
Focusing on the holy fire inside her Flaith unleashes the flame on the gnome.
After he is gone she smiles and looks at the others
My teacher taught me mercy is the ultimate insult to those of the lower plains. Maybe I should have asked him for a round of Kumm-ba-ja my lady, but I didn't want to be cruel."

GM Rinaldo |

Flaith mixes the azata's loaned power with her own divine spark, and with very little fanfare, the demon simply disappears, but not before saying, "I will remember this ... and all of you. Your time will come!"
The azata smiles and says, "Thank you, friend. You have done a great service to your world, as well as to me personally. All of you have. In the future, if you have need of aid that I can provide, call my name, Sulianna the Luninescent, and I will be there."
She then departs for Elysium, leaving you to collect your sleeping charge and return home. Once again, you hear the disembodied voice as it says, "Well, I guess you lot aren't totally incompetent. Do you think you can get him home safely?"
You manage to wake Kalkamedes. He sees that you have his sword, and picks it up. Drawing it from its sheath, he says to it, "Gamin! What is going on here? Who are these people?"
The sword responds, "Some losers that Lady Sheila found to follow you while you were sleepwalking to see where you went. Turns out you were being called by an azata to save the world from a glabrezu! See, I told you that you were still worthy!"
As you begin the trek back to his home, Kalkamedes asks for an explanation of what happened. When you arrive, Sheila is relieved to see her friend has recovered, and offers you heartfelt thanks for your work.
Despite its initial attitude toward you all, the talking sword Gamin also thanks you. After a conversation with Kalkamedes, the sword asks if any of you would care to take him out on your adventures, as the former paladin expresses no interest in returning to his adventuring ways.

He is rather expensive, so you may not be able to take him immediately, but he's fun.
Going to try to get chronicles done over lunch.

Huzzah!
Good work all! I'm at Gen Con and glad to see we finished this up. I enjoyed playing with all of you and am looking forward to playing with some of you later in Gameday with the same characters. GM Rinaldo, thanks for the great session. This was one that stands out.
