Hi,

Just posting to check interest at this point.

Thinking of running the new edition of Masks of Nyarlhotep.

Please post if you are interested.

Silver Crusade

I may be interested, what system are you using?

I will be using 7th edition call of cthulu

Pathfinder Lost Omens Subscriber

I'd be up for that.

Count me interested.
I've played a lot of older Cthulhu, but don't have 7th Edition. Yet.

Never played Masks - though I've heard horror stories about the older versions. It's a 20s setting, right?

Yeah, it starts in March 1921

I'm interested, are the rules available for free anywhere?

Silver Crusade

As the above poster.

I don't believe the full rules are online for free, but there's a Quick Start available.

Full rulebook can be found at https://thetrove.net/

Just look for Cthulu 1920s and then select 7th edition.

Well we have 3 players are people happy with that or would you like me to hold out for more?

I'm pretty sure that's not a legal download site. Paizo frowns on linking to such, even if it's not their material.

Quick start is fine.

Pathfinder Lost Omens Subscriber

I'm fine with three. We can always recruit more if needed.

I'm happy to start playing as soon as we work out characters!

Edit: thought I'd throw some dice to get things started.

Yeah still recruiting

Alright, I'll see if I cannot get a submission up tonight. The 1920's is my favorite era, I am running Beyond the Mountains of Madness myself on the boards right now so I am familiar with the 6th edition rules which I believe are quite close to the 7th edition rules.

I might be interested in playing, but haven't really played Call of Cthulu before (I played a one shot back in college that used a d20-based system, but I don't think that's the standard). Would that be okay, or would you prefer experienced players?

@Phntm888 - That's fine, welcome aboard. I have only played Call of Cthulu, this will be my first time running.

Okay. Could you tell me a bit more about Masks of Nyarlathotep? Specifically, where it starts. I had a couple of ideas for characters after reading the Quick Start rules, but I want to make sure it makes sense for the character to be there before I create them.

Play starts in March 1921 in Peru.

I will set up various tabs over the next couple of days together with maps and various images. May take a couple of days before we are fully ready.

Forgot to say characters will have been recruited by a man called Augustus Larkin who is planning an archaeological expedition to a region where a large number of golden artifacts have previously been found in search of a treasure trove.

So we can be from practically anywhere we want so long as we have a skill that would be applicable to a dig site?

I am considering an archaeologist so that fits well. The cliche is to be from Miskatonic U and I may well be cliche... :-)

Yeah that's fine.

Okay. I'm thinking of making a treasure hunter - kind of inspired by Brendan Fraser's character from the Mummy movies.

For a Treasure Hunter Occupation, I was kind of thinking of this for Skills:

Appraise
Climb
Fighting
Firearms
Stealth
Survival
Swim
Other Language

GM, does that seem good to you?

I think I'll go for Dr of Medicine as my occupation, and every good expedition needs a medical person.

Background:

Carter is a professor of Anthropology at Miskatonic University.

Concept - Indiana Jones

Arthur was born in Kensington England to Martha and Roger Carter, the older brother of the man who would one day be world famous as an Egyptologist. In his youth, Arthur had a keen intellect and the knack for manipulating those around him even where they were more powerful of build.

As the Great War loomed, the studies of Arthur at the Oxford Medical school were interrupted by the call of all young men to Europe to defeat the menace of the Huns. Arthur took the opportunity to push for a position on the Battlefield as a Medic rather than as a foot soldier. The influence of his Uncle enabled him to pull just enough strings to get the job done.

By the end of the Great War, Arthur became a modestly successful physician. He won numerous awards for his calmness of heart and mind in the worst of situations. The men that served near him though knew that the man was cold blooded and despite being respected, he was feared by his peers.

Death interested Arthur at this time and once discharged, he wrote to his Uncle in Egypt requesting a position with him investigating the mysteries of the past. The medical world held no more interest for Arthur. Howard Carter agreed to bring his young nephew, a War hero, near physician, and brilliant young analytical mind to the dig site in the Valley of the Kings.

Before the dig could be completed Arthur was weary from life in the desert, he applied for a position at the American Miskatonic University as he had heard that the Archaeology Department wanted someone with real life field experience.

In the next year when the dig did reveal the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun Arthur was disappointed that he had left before he could be a part of history.

A few weeks ago, Augustus Larkin who is planning an archaeological expedition to Peru contacted him to ask if he would make the travel south to uncover further golden artifacts after a previous dig found a treasure trove in the area. Arthur leapt at the chance and asked for a Sabbatical from his Department head.

A second crack at glory awaited Arthur and no doubt a much less sandy and windy digging experience!

Close to done I believe.

I'm thinking about an ex-military pilot / mechanic. Bring some mechanical abilities, driving, fighting etc. to the bunch. I'll roll some dice, and work on my Hero Lab character tomorrow hopefully.

Silver Crusade

are the rules for character creation different in the quick start rules vs the normal rule book?

@rorek55 - As far as I can see the only real difference is that the quick start doesn't list the whole skills available and only gives suggestions based on characters occupation/background.

Tbh you can use 6th edition for character creation - there's not much difference between the two.

Everyone's characters look good. Still got a few things to sort it, might be a few days yet before we're ready to go. Feel free to transpose the character details to the characters tab and use the discussion tab.

Dr Brent Sanders reporting in! Full stats and background available in this profile.

The Quick Start also doesn't list any equipment, how much starting funds you have, or how much anything costs. Could someone give me a hand with that? I gave my character a credit rating of 40.

Silver Crusade

also non-occupation skills seem to be very differently done in the quickstart rules from what I have seen others doing-
Pick four non-occupation skills and boost them by 20%,

Here is a sheet for Nick-

Thrashing slightly on ideas, but still interested.
My initial concept didn't really have a good hook for an expedition to Peru. Then my next idea was for a bush pilot, which it looks like Scranford is making, so I'll have to rethink. :)

I'll see what I can get up tomorrow in PDF form from the 6th edition equipment list, should be substantially similar.

There's an English YouTuber that walks through detailed Skill selection rules. Fairly similar to 6th edition rules. I'll see if I can find the link to that tonight and post it.

Thanks. I'm guessing they didn't include it in the Quick Start rules cause they assumed you'd be sitting at a table with a GM or someone who has the book, but it's still inconvenient.

Go ahead and make the bush pilot. I'll work on an outdoor guide bodyguard type.

Here's what I have for my character so far, since I can't do equipment yet.

Meaningful Locations:
Treasured Possessions:
Traits: Cynical. His time in the trenches of Europe has given Henry a cynical view of the world. He hunts treasures because it gets him away from civilization and ‘aristocrats’ who seek to use ordinary people as pawns in their games. When he works for them directly, he always tries to get paid 50% up front, since he knows they might scam him otherwise.
Injuries & Scars: Scar on his right bicep where a German sniper shot him during World War I. Slightly crooked nose from getting it broken during a bar fight a couple years back.

Arcane Tomes, Spells, & Artifacts:
Encounters with Strange Entities:

Is this still open to newcomers? I know I'm a bit late to the party but I do have a love for Call of Cthulhu, although I haven't actually played much. Would love to join with... Something. Not sure what just yet, I'm seeing a lot of the primary roles covered.

@Helix missionary Sorry I think we have enough players now. Thanks for the interest.

Phntm888, I'll try to have all that up today, was just too tired last night when I got home to get to it :-(

DM, I will try to have my character completed and first post up today as well.

I will put up links in the Discussion thread.
