Hey there everyone. Thank you for considering me for the opportunity to take over your Rise of the Runelords campaign, adopting it from DM Papa.DRB! After much thought, I am making this thread to have a discussion with you for to see where you would like for this campaign to go.
I have been thinking of running something pbp for a while. Something long term, fun, engaging and for a group of players who are really interested and invested in the world we will be building.
A little about me. I am an Australian player, so my posting times are always a little off compared to the rest of the world. If you are in the US or Canada, I will be posting while you are asleep, and vice verca. I have played through Shattered Star, Reign of Winter and currently at the finale chapter of Iron Gods. I have also prepared all of Legacy of Fire and Stranger Aeons. Although PbP is a new medium for me, I am currently running an ongoing core campaign for Thornkeep which I have found to be very successful. For an example of my gm-ing style online you can follow this link. I am a four-star gm, and i play and help co-ordinate multiple events locally. I love the lore of Golarion, and intent on playing first-edition for a long time.
Return of the Runelords
I have made it a case to go over your campaign thus far. It seems you are at Roderic's Wreck, and in the middle of exploring it. I do not intend on starting over, even though there is not much room to cover, i won't put you guys through that again.
I have a few concerns about the game thus far that i'd like to address:
- I am still yet extremely unsure as to where your characters come from. If your character is not a local, why did you come to Roderic's Cove? I see that DM. Papa has set the game up as if you are up and coming adventurers. That won't be good enough for me, haha. Sure, you can be adventurer's - but what is your motive behind picking up a weapon and risking your life for strangers you don't know? With that being said, I would really like more information about your characters. If you could please introduce yourselves again, that would be great.
- Return of the Runelords is a heavy arcane magic adventure, and with the majority of you being divine spell casters, i am slightly worried. How i would like to fix this, is by giving each one of you your own distinct school of magic you are tied to. A subplot, perhaps, or i guess an inate reason why your characters are tied to these Runelords. How does that sound? If anyone would like to bring a new character, feel free to make any changes you wish.
- I currently cannot see where you guys are on the map, as the previous GM has deleted the maps. I'll need some guidance to see where you guys were at in the mansion before continuing. I would like to keep progress in two files, google slides for maps, and google sheets for character sheets and loot.
Another thing to note. Since this is campaign mode, i most likely will be changing encounters around, and adding my own thrown in between the main story, depending where you guys decide to go. This is an extremely sandboxy type of adventure, with many hooks to take you anywhere you wanna go. Let me know if you have any concerns with this.
Let me know what you guys think. I will start preparing things, but will not begin untill all the players have turned in. I look forward to meeting all of you.
Fergus comes from the same clan as his kin, Cordwin, who due to his exploits (in a Shattered Star campaign) is a hero, not only to the surface races, but to his fellow drawves.
You could say that Fergus is equally wanting to follow in his kin's footsteps and perform great deeds.
Saving Roderic's Cove sounds like a good way to start.
I am good with Fergus as is. He will be more tank then divine caster.
I believe we were in Room A16 in the AP. I believe the only thing of note we encounter was creepy ghost baby.
Again, Thank you so much for taking us on. Please let me know if you have any questions on Fergus or if he needs any revisions to suit your game style.
I think everyone has touched base in the previous thread except Mara. I have PM'd her but have not heard back.
Thanks so much for being willing to take this on.
I'm willing to try out whatever you would like for the campaign. Having a school of magic that we are tied to sounds interesting! I'd probably leave Flik "as is" as well, as I'm hoping to make him the kind of scholar and historian that would help move the story along.
My backstory is below. Flik loves traveling around Varisia, and considers most of the people he meets to be his friends until he learns otherwise. He's very fond of the people in Roderick's Cove--even people who are a little villainous or rough around the edges--so any threat to them would be an inciting even for him--especially if it gave him the opportunity to learn something new or discover some old books or records.
Flik is a personable gnome with black eyes and hair the color of indigo ink. He is usually seen lugging around a knapsack full of old paperback books. He is quick with kind words and loves trading stories and gossip. He loves travel, but more than that he loves all of the communities in Varisia that he has gotten to know over the years.
Flik has spent his adult life wandering from Riddleport to Korvosa, but his favorite places to stop were the small towns like Roderic's Cove. He'd set up shop in the corner of the inn and stay for weeks, loaning books to all of the children in the town. Finally, the innkeeper would shoo him out, and he'd be on to the next town, where he would lend his wares to the youth and trade news and stories for more used books. He would say that he knew most of the townsfolk in the country well, after years and years of wandering southern Varisia.
While he would only admit it to his closest confidants, Flik is a bit haunted by some unusual occurrences on his journeys. At times, he will be leaving one town and suddenly seem to be entering another, with no memory of the journey between. He has also experienced visions of strange buildings in the distance that disappear when he draws close to them. So far, he has been able to discount these visions as the result of fatigue or atmospheric conditions.
Can you tell me more about your exploits from Cordwin in Shattered Star? Why does Fergus look up to this Hero so much? I would love to know how you guys fared in Shattered Star. The more information the better.
Which god do you worthip, and what would you say Fergus's relation with that diety is like?
What school of magic do you want to explore the most, being a paladin?
I love your background, very well put together and leaves me much to work with. What are your plans for the bard?
When it comes to knowledges, feel free to roll your rolls as combat starts on your turn, and I will add the modifier. If the creature is … recognisable for it's knowledge, feel free to add modified right away, I won't classify this as metagaming. Your entire class is based around making the knowledge checks, so to speed things up we will do thing this way. Also list what information you want, or I will give you the most relevant things.
What school of magic do you want to explore the most, or have a close innate connection with? I'm thinking avoid illusion as you are a gnome and that is cliché, or if you are really keen go with it. Let me know.
Here's Cordwin's Campaign Journal on Shattered Star.
All of these exploits would have gotten back to Fergus and the rest of the clan.
Fergus worships Angradd. As a god of tradition and war, it fits in with honoring the tradition that Cordwin contributed to while suiting his more martial interest.
He would be most interested in magic that heals or helps smite evil.
Hey everyone! I have started putting a map together with tokens and character information. I will be adding things slowly, but it should be enough to get us started at least once everyone has checked in.
I have pm-ed a few other people regarding this campaign from different abandoned RotRL campaigns, to see if they were interested with joining up with us. Priority will be given to the five of you, but if we have drop outs, at least we will have people to fill those spots. I would like to get things rolling on by March. Does that sound fair with everyone?
I'm planning on going straight support bard. It's not a very feat-intensive plan, so I'm hoping to be able to adapt as we level and really roleplay the character choices that I make.
I think that divination would be a good school of magic for me. I'm not really interested in illusions on this character, but I am interested in tracking down lost knowledge, so I think it would be a good fit.
SOunds good -- though I'm going to be out of town for a bit in early March.
Borgol's history is posted at the end of his character sheet (as is a description, and the hero he's attached to) -- but Borgol's in the Cove partially by chance, and partially because he thinks it's where Erastil wants him to be.
Borgols' built, basically, to head into Vindicator - but a more martially-inclined one. Basically, a paladin but by a different mechanic -- and I'm mostly happy with the character as he is. That said, I think it's our arcane casters who fell away when the GM did -- and if it's necessary to make a party that works, I could redesign.
I guess this is a good time to talk about posting expectations. I know that this is going to be long term, but in favour of getting things rolling at a good pace, I would encourage people to post at least once a day, or once every two days if things get busy. I do like to bot people in combat and for certain rolls, but I will not roleplay your characters for you. This is a living breathing world, so I want the decisions to be your own. With most of you having played some sort of Adventure Path before, you will know that your decisions matter and choices have long lasting consequences.
Having said that, can people please make sure to have a Bot Me! section in their character sheet that i can turn to in combat if we are falling behind. For important and difficult fights, i will not bot anyone at all, unless things are getting really long.
A little book-keeping...
Can we please streamline everyone's player tags into the following formats just for ease of use? I would like to do this for an AP for my own benefit:
Class (Level): HP 10/10 | AC 17 TC 12 FF 15 | Init +4 | Percep +5, Motive +7 | 30ft Speed | +3 CMB | CMD 15, FF 13 | Fort +3, Ref +2, Will +5 | Spells/Dailies
If you want a tag for your skills also, please do a spoiler=Skills and list them all underneath the player information tag.
I am mostly ready to go, i am just waiting on our druid to check in with us. I am guessing the Witch is not responding to any of our messages. What did you guys want to do about that?
From an Ooc standpoint, we were built with Max gold. From an IC standpoint, the spiked shield and longsword are gear he had as a pitfighter at Kaer Maga -- while the rest of it (especially the thieves tools) came from Leandra.
Hello! Alustria is a Druid of Sarenrae, worshipping her in her aspect as a Sun-Goddess rather than a Good one. She doesn’t see herself as an adventurer, per se- just someone with some abilities and a curious mind. That being said, she is very compassionate and kind and doesn’t like to see people hurt, so that’s where her priorities go. She is also Audrahni’s cousin, through her Elven heritage.
As a build, I’m taking her up according to Treantmonk’s Wild Mystic suggestions. She is a primary caster and will stay that way; I don’t plan to multi class either.
I would expect you to change things! I haven’t read ahead, so it’s all a surprise to me.
|Old Guy GM|
Apologies Old Guy GM. Yes, I was in fact looking for some more people, but they have already been chosen from another abandoned run of this adventure. Thank you for showing your interest.
Speaking of which, I will be introducing the new players into this thread soon and setting up the gameplay thread. I hope everyone is ready to go, is everyone okay with 6 players? I will be changing things slightly to make it more interesting for a full group of six, and will see how we go!
Looking to start very soon!
Works for me. I'm good to go whenever we start.
Hello, everybody! The GM has graciously decided to extend me an invite to this game, and I am happy to be here. The previous game I was in fell apart just after the initial encounter, so I'm looking forward to telling Remy's story. :)
Alrighty, once the other two players have made their way here, I will create the thread and we will begin.
Where we begin...
So, we will be picking up where the original group left off, meeting the ghost at Roderic's Wreck. I have a nice way of introducing the new players into the game. It's going to be very out there and different, but you will have to bear with me and trust that I know what im doing. I have read ahead in the adventure path, and oh my...oh...my...
Needless to say, i am very excited to get started. I will be making adjustments for a six player table, to hopefully make the world we are creating more fun for everyone.
Maps are here. Please edit and add whatever information you like. I will be building up this database for the campaign slowly.
Hello all! I’m the other new player, from the same game that Remy was in previously. Thanks for the invite, GM!
Gameplay thread is live! Feel free to make you own first reactions to what has transpired. I want exploration to feel fluid, so feel free have your characters explore where you want. Big decisions we will make together as a unit. But please, describe your actions and roleplay between yourselves. Let's get going!
As I alluded to earlier, I'll be away for 8 days starting on Wednesday (the 6th) ['til Thursday, the 14th] - out of town and away from computers to enjoy some tropical sun.
Feel free to bot Borgol while I'm gone -- at the moment, he's a pretty straight-forward type and feeling quite on edge from all the ghostly things he can't hurt or protect the others from (which are his default 'go to' positions).
@Maddie. I think I will roll your forewarned every time with you initiative. Pbp and the power of foresight, I think you can just open the initiative tab and see your roll to figure out if you wanna use it or not. We will do it this way just to speed things up. You just tell me if you are using it or not.
Is this okay with you?
Yeah, that's fine by me- I technically shouldn't know what the roll should be before I decide to use it, but I can just ignore that.
Also, I'm not sure why I thought we were facing swarms, but it doesn't actually change my actions at all.
Haha, yeah the swarm thing was kind of random.
I know you’re not supposed to know, but I feel this is the easiest way of doing things, becuase most of the time you’re not going to know when we are starting combat. Let’s haur see how we go, and if we need to change anything we can!
I am back, and see there's a whole lot to catch up on. Will read up and try to get into the flow
How are we doing HP?
+5? HP (assuming 1/2 normal +1)
+1 Will save
+1 1st-level spell slot
+1 Temporal pool point
9 skill ranks:
Knowledge (arcana, dungeoneering, geography, history, local, planes, religion), Perception, Spellcraft
All leveled up.
I can deal with magical traps now!
I hope everyone is interested in the chatty chats. This is my first time trying to develop characters through play-by-post, so this is...interesting to me. Tomorrow will be the final day of chatty-chats as I plan to move you guys along soon. Please have your characters leveled up soon, at the end of the week by the latest. Let me know if you need any help.
I'm enjoying the chats! Gameplay post coming soon.
No issues with the chat, other than being a bit behind and not having the time to join in on the weekend. :)
- +1 BAB
- +1 Ref, +1 Fort
- +8 hp (6 + 1 con + 1 FC)
- Combat Style: 2-Weapon -> Bonus Feat: Two-Weapon Fighting
- 7 Skill Points:
-- Climb, Disable Device, Knowledge (Religion), Knowledge (Dungeoneering) Perception, Stealth, UMD
Question, because it does affect how I go about leveling - when the campaign started, we were limited to which sources we could draw from, but with the chronomancer, I'm assuming that's less of an issue -- so I'm wondering if I could make some small edits based on the availability of the other books -- the biggest one being taking the Divine Tracker archetype for my ranger levels..
And done! Going update the stat line now.
Get one new spell of 0th/1st levels per day.
Woodland Stride gained.
Boosted some skills, took 1 rank in Knowledge: Local.
Just a heads up- I may be without a computer for a couple days, and while I can post from my phone, it’s not terribly easy. So do bot me if needed.
Class Bonus: +1
Knowledge (History) +1
Divine Grace At 2nd level, a paladin gains a bonus equal to her Charisma bonus (if any) on all Saving Throws.
Lay On Hands Beginning at 2nd level, a paladin can heal wounds (her own or those of others) by touch. Each day she can use this ability a number of times equal to 1/2 her paladin level plus her Charisma modifier. With one use of this ability, a paladin can heal 1d6 hit points of damage for every two paladin levels she possesses. Using this ability is a standard action, unless the paladin targets herself, in which case it is a swift action. Despite the name of this ability, a paladin only needs one free hand to use this ability.
Alternatively, a paladin can use this healing power to deal damage to undead creatures, dealing 1d6 points of damage for every two levels the paladin possesses. Using lay on hands in this way requires a successful melee touch attack and doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. Undead do not receive a saving throw against this damage.
Alrighty! Everyone is levelled up and ready to go?
I have fixed up the next set of maps. Currently you are still in Cove Hall having a 'meeting' with the Governor, but afterwards, you will be heading down to do your research.
I am also currently preparing all of the maps for the next area!
I was waiting to see if anybody more "diplomatic" would try speaking to the governor, but I guess I can try to be intimidating. :D
I will be on a cruise next week from 4/1-4/6 without Internet access. It will likely take me till the following Monday or Tuesday to get caught up and resume posting.
GM, please bot me as necessary.
Gameplay post coming soon- Maddie loves books more than anything in the world (except maybe puppies), and so will jump at the chance to research stuff.
That said, having had many a PBP stall during sandbox, my vote is for streamlining the search.
