Atium splits one of the paintings apart in anger. The tapestry and wooden frame shatters to the floor. -1 to diplomacy checks for each photo attacked.

Vinas pleads with the rest of the group for safe passage.

The portraits nod approvingly at Vinas, and space seems to distort around you before you find yourselves standing in front of the door.

The door opens onto an elegant sitting room that has two divans and a low table with a silver tray upon it. A door leads out to the west. The tray is exceptionally bright, but anybody looking into it sees the back of their head rather than the front, as though seeing themself from behind.

Appraise DC 15:

The tray is not real silver. It's likely an illusion spell is affecting it and warping your reflection. +1 Clarity

The west door opens onto an enormous, round room enveloped in long shadows. Dim light shines through narrow windows high on the walls. A set of narrow stairs circles the room, ascending to a landing 60 feet above.

Aishe is pleased when Vinas manages to convince the paintings we're OK, and Atium gets his anger vented. The best of both worlds. Things are looking up!

He's smiling as the group enters the next chamber, though he waits for the warriors to enter first.

When they do so, he admires the tray and tries to figure out the effect.

"Ah, oh. Illusion I think. The tray isn't anything special anyway." he mutters.

Vanyan takes in the room after others have entered: 1d20 + 11 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 11 - 1 = 15 Perception with Detect Magic

Then he slumps down on one of the divans, glaring at Atium. "Sometimes talking can be more effective than just smashing everything to bits and pieces, you know!", he observes, conveniently glossing over the fact that his own attempts at petitioning the portraits for safe passage was not exactly... successful, and that Atium’s mental facilities (already less than his own) might be even *more* impaired by the damage from the paintings.

Switching topics, he further opines: "I didn't know the Scriptorium had another level. And this circular room with the stairs... are we in a tower? If there's one thing I know about towers, it's that whatever avoids at the top is usually less than friendly," he adds, helpfully. "Is everyone feeling all right? Anyone need a brief rest before we proceed?" He looks around expectantly.

His hands go to the lightbox at his chest, fidgeting with it as if they are considering something that his mind has yet to catch up to.

I am Superglad that my actions didn't mess up our escape. But Atium isn't wise right now.
Seeing that the pictures allow their exit. Atium sees victory.
You were smart pictures to know might makes right.
And he walks into the room. He looks, but does not see a damn thing.
A combination of his nearsighted-ness, the scope of the room, and the fact that his perception score has to be in the toilet about now.

When Vanyan sits on a divan, Atium follows suit. Not knowing what to do. There's a buzzing in his brain. He can think clearly, he just has a hard time with decisions.

Vanyan wrote:

And Atium's perception of the hallway swings along the pendulum.

He acts like a puppy dog that got scolded.
I am sorry Vanyan. I just wanted out. I won't do that again. Don't be mad.
And while he believes he won't do that again.... he's really not up on the cupboard and driving the cart anymore.

He sits. Looking to emulate what others are doing. He gets figgity and hyperactive. mirroring what Tess does, then Aishe. Then Vinas.

Vanyan notices Atium's restlessness before the burly man utters a single word. He's not sure what he expected to hear, but he's pleasantly surprised when it turns out to be a sincere apology.

This place has really gotten to all of them, but he is not used to seeing Atium so thrown off. As he ponders all this, his hand once again is drawn to the lightbox. He gently fiddles with it until it emits a subtle glow which seems to settle onto Atium.

The stairs are narrow and steep, making ascending them a dubious affair. You are about halfway up the stairs when Aishe spots movement from an alcove just beneath the landing. He shouts a warning as a lanky ebon monster emerges! The thing has bat-like wings and a long prehensile tail, yet its most unsettling feature is its lack of a face.

    Knowledge (nature) DC 19:

This is a strange extraplanar monstrous humanoid known as a nightgaunt. Nightgaunts haunt the deepest and darkest chasms of dreams. Mrs. Pedipalp looks around as she is assaulted with accusations, talk of leaving the Scriptorium and even threats of tying her up. She looks genuinely scared. Her old hands shake. "I am telling the truth. I need your help." She points to the back room. "A psychopomp, named Mictena visited me a bit ago. I only agreed to help her to protect my position here, I only wanted to take over for Salighara's work. I never planned on actually trying to kill anybody!" He bottom lip quivers as she seems extremely hurt emotionally. "But I made a mistake with the Dream Gate. Something went wrong and Colulus came through. He emerged through the Dream Gate and that he infused the Scriptorium with nightmares...I...I must have fell under the influence of one of the more dangerous ones. Did you come across any other nightmares in the building?"

Her eyes go wide with fear. "Of course I know Salighara." She goes quiet as Atium threatens to tie her into the corner like some sort of prisoner in a home invasion. She pleads. "I mean you no harm. I need your help and will help show you how to shut down the Dream Gate." She pauses for a moment, shaking as a chill runs through her. "We haven't time to wait for Salighara, I feel another evil presence gathering at the Gate even as we speak. It must not be allowed through!"

Even with everyone watching her every movement, listening to her every word you each believe Mrs Pedipalp to be telling the truth. Vinas checks for evil auras in the room. Concentrating Vinas does detect evil in the area, though most of this scriptorium has radiated evil due to the nightmarish influence.

Vanyan ponders. This appears to be quite a complex problem. He finally turns to the old woman: "Okay, we heard your version of this story. And maybe we all want the same things in the end...," he ventures.

After all, they are not the Boneyard police. If she can give them the stamp, he figures it's not their job to settle the Scriptorium ownership dispute. He's somewhat more concerned about the portal, and the looming threat of this supposed dream gate. *If* there is a threat, which he isn't sure why there would be one right now.

"Yes, we've encountered a nightmare... or five," he tells Mrs. Pedipalp, shivering as he recalls, vividly, his incident with the hand. What other horrors might be waiting for them? "For what it's worth, I'm for dragging her down and out to see Salaghara," he states, glancing carefully at the platform.

If only he could make out more details...

Atium's instinct pays off this time. Though would have been fantastic if Paizo led up to this being a nice old lady while Salighara being the evil bad guy.

Seeing through the illusion, Vinas charges at Mrs. Pedipalp. His attack comes full circle as the longsword slices through the elderly woman's torso, though the blade doesn't go nearly as deep as he had hoped. DR

"Oh, dearie! It seems my ruse has been seen! Very well, we will do this the hard way." Her form seems to shift slightly as subtle spiderlike features emerge. He bottom jaw splits in two halves, each side containing sharp teeth. Four spider-like legs protrude from underneath her shawl as she smiles menacingly.

Vanyan recognizes the elderly woman as a nightmare aranea. Vanyan knows that a nightmare aranea has a natural reduction to all forms of weapons unless they are made of silver or good aligned.

    Aranea:
An aranea is an intelligent, shapechanging spider with sorcerous powers. In its natural form, an aranea resembles a humpbacked spider a little bigger than a human, and weighs about 150 pounds. The hump on its back houses the aranea's brain. All araneas have a single alternate form as well—this alternate form is that of a Small or Medium humanoid. Although an aranea can assume a spider-hybrid variant of this form, it cannot use its change shape ability to assume multiple humanoid forms—this additional shape is locked into one unique appearance.

Araneas typically gather in small colonies of two to six individuals, making webbed nests high in trees. These colonies work together to research magic, and may change membership many times over as individuals leave to pursue their own studies and are replaced by newer members. A single aranea may take on humanoid form and live for years in a humanoid community, never revealing its true nature. Though araneas generally prefer to be left alone, they often prove quite knowledgeable about the ways of magic, and if approached peacefully may be willing to share their expertise for the right price (typically a magic item or some service).

Skilled spellcasters, araneas try to avoid physical combat and use their webs and spells when they can. Rather than kill their enemies, araneas often subdue opponents and hold them for ransom.

Tessenarin coats the entire back of the room in a glittery mess.
