Ally 4: 1d1000 ⇒ 308 Replace Marianix Karn with Vizier. I love "examine and optionally explore" powers, and making it a reload for the examine only makes the card effectively free. Another power makes it far more likely for me to be able to acquire spells which may be beneficial due to having two spellcasters in the party. I do like Karn's ability to add 1d6 against Barriers, but it's more situational than Evangelist (although the latter only adds 1d4). Having both around doesn't make sense in a post-Core world.

Scenario Reward: If we can shuffle a basic into our deck instead of our starting-plunder from the 1B reward, then the ship seems tempting. Even if we can't, we don't get much tangible benefit from a single Plunder on average anyhow, and our regular ship penalises my evasion power.

On the other hand, we haven't ever struggled during this AP, so we don't need to trade away possible rewards for small efficiencies.

    5-4C: Inahiyi’s Nightmare - Olenjack Rewards

    Scenario Reward: I am highly interested in the Loot Item reward we get. However, I also acknowledge that it'll work great for virtually any member of the party (it's 3 free explorations and ally acquires, as long as you don't have an item you mind banishing when you trade for it).

    By and large, I'd prefer the Loot to go to someone who both wants it and it will perform very well for.

    Quick-and-Dirty Analysis:
    The loot card is, by the way, the Immortal Dreamstone. It's like the Emerald Codex, but for allies.

    Jirelle: Her emphasis on rerolls and her diverse skillset means she can make great use of bonus explorations - capable of defeating monsters, barriers, acquiring cards and closing checks all in one character.

    Enora: Can often run short on cards in deck; extra allies (either displayed or drawn) gives a bit more buffer to how she can afford to spend her turns and cards. Plus, she's the single best anti-barrier character in the party (as of her last power feat), and so she can leverage bonus explorations to demolish threatening barrier-heavy locations with ease.

    Maznar: Can be used to greatly increase his chance of drawing an Animal ally from the box, in case he doesn't start with one. Special advantages with Animals.

    Agna: Can be used to greatly increase her chance of drawing an Animal ally from the box, in case she doesn't start with one. Even greater advantages with animals than Maznar (since she also recharges them on use), and can use additional explorations well since her use of Weapons (rather than spells) means she can handle more combat checks in a row.

    Plus, her inherent animal ally bonus means she's flexible and well-suited to handling large quantities of barriers and boon acquisitions in a single, long turn. Plus, she features self-healing; great when you're chain-discarding a bunch of allies

    However, she has precious few (and highly valuable) Item slots.

    Olenjack: Loves to chain-explore, and loves holding as many allies as possible. Regardless of the ally's traits, he can leverage them for evasion or check support. He has a large quantity of items (so he can certainly afford to trade one for Loot) and is uniquely well-suited to searching out this Loot card from his deck (Blessing of Kofusachi and Delve); so it'll never end up unused over the course of a scenario.

    It's probably worth noting that I'm happy to take it (given my searching abilities and extra items), and then intentionally search it out to give away to a party member, if we think that's an optimal use. I can see the merits!

    Summary: I have a high interest in it, but I think everyone can leverage it well. I'd like to have a team discussion on this, but we can always roll for it - or share it over time from scenario-to-scenario - as needed.

    Summon Hellhounds is a great and powerful spell conceptually... and also a spell that I've never once seen used, probably for good reason.

    An Aside:
    The more people working together and gaining its benefits, the more crippling the literally deadly downside of it can become. If you had plenty of self-healing, or even benefits from dying (like Nyctessa, or if you have Phoenix Cloak out), then it's certainly workable, though. Even aside from supporting your allies; it lets you leverage weaker but re-usable methods of attack like Sphere of Fire or Flame Staff (Core) and still pass long series of combat checks without having to cast more spells.


    Eh, let's give the hellhounds a try. I'm likely to replace either with Fire Barrage at some point this adventure, so let's maybe have some fun in the meantime.

    You may expend a hero point (when, and only immediately when) you earn one from a scenario to gain any feat of your choice.

    All of us have the following limits for feats, that cannot be exceeded.

    Skill: Equal to our Tier (5, for now)
    Power: Equal to our Tier+1 (6, for now)
    Card: Equal to our Tier+1 (6, for now)

    You should have earned 5 power feats by now, and you can take a 6th right now.

    Thank you to EmpTyger! I'll pass on future deck upgrades in return - this Item 5 is the most important card this AP for me, in my opinion.

    For that matter, it's the best card in my Class+Ultimate decks, hands-down.

    (I've always thought that you just have an empty slot when taking a Card Feat, which is then filled after you've completed your rewards/Deck Upgrades if necessary as per the Hierarchy. Apparently - at least as of the latest Card Guild Guide - that's not the case; you fill it as soon as you get it, even if you haven't taken Deck Upgrades yet.)

  • New Ally Slot with Old Salt (2) (Rogue CD, Ally 0).

    Olenjack still has 4 Hero Points.

    Scenario Reward: Added to Deck Handler.

    Yep, looks like EmpTyger is correct. I also noticed that I made a mistake and wrote down that Maznar saved a feat in 4E, but he used it for a power feat. I've corrected that in my tracker.
