**OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT**

The long journey south from the slopes of the Tusk Mountains to the edge of Fangwood took several weeks, during which many of the Twinhorns and Pathfinders exchanged ancestral stories and tales of daring adventures to pass the time on the relatively uneventful trek. By the time the Fangwood rises ahead in the brisk morning air, both groups are eager to confront whatever lies ahead.

Medda addresses the crowd gathered before her. “South of here lies a battlefield where the paladin Ivvora risked her life in a daring ploy to help her battalion defeat an undead horde. For her selflessness, Ivvora earned a token of Vildeis’s favor: the dagger she used to deal a terrible blow to Eshimka! For all the crusaders’ heroism, I can sense an undead taint lingered here, and that stretch of the Fangwood has expanded in the centuries since to absorb it. It is now our turn to earn Vildeis’s blessing, risking ourselves to end this threat so that in turn we might slay Eshimka once and for all.

“The terrain favors small groups over larger formations, so we shall divide into smaller groups to navigate the forest and identify the corruption’s heart. May Ivvora’s example guide us to victory!” With that, Medda and her phantom Anok turn and enter the Fangwood, followed by Pathfinder and Twinhorn teams that fan out behind her.

GMs, you may begin Part 5.

Another year, another Medda speech... a half-elven woman mutters as the Kellid rushes forwards.

She then turns to her nearby companions. Dressed in a chain shirt dyed deep red, Laara extends a calloused hand to her allies before taking her shield from her back and strapping it on.

Laara. Captain of the Fearsome Tide. So, any of you dealt with these Twinhorns before?

Brambles grow wild throughout the edge of the wood where a thick canopy of trees begins to filter out sunlight, turning day into night. The overgrown plant life forbids easy access deeper into the forest and fills the air with the sickly-sweet smell of decay.

"I'm Lissa, from the Villasani clan. I've been answering the Society's call for assisting them for the last couple years. It's been a right mess." She ducks into the greenery in an attempt to avoid the worst of the plants.

A shadow drifts across the occasional clearing as Ragnilde and Helga come into sight. But with the brambles this thick, they prefer to fly above the canopy and keep an eye out for any airborne threats.

For those Pathfinders following the trails in the forest...

The forest floor is blanketed with eerie dark flowers that paint the otherwise lightless woods with their purple incandescence. Disorienting paths cut through the trees, forward-facing paths seem to lead back to where they started, and retracing one’s steps leads to unfamiliar terrain. Glowing eyes glare hungrily from within the impenetrable thickets where the vines slowly curl around anyone who gets too close.

Valentino smiles at Laara’s compliment and looks at his bow. ”Oh, thank you. This bow serves me well indeed. But I prefer to keep my distance from the opposition’s faces, as you put it. I know a few chants that will help accentuate your scrapping ability though. As well as Fluffy and our other comrades. I even just learned a new chant I have yet to try…” Valentino grins mischeivously and pauses, then continues. ”This particular chant,” He glances around at his fellow Pathfinders, ”it can, well...I suppose I should just be frank. It will animate the corpses of fallen foes and force them to do my bidding as long as I continue the chant. Depending on the, um, situation, it could turn fallen foes into temporary fellow scrappers.

So I just hit level 10 and my archetype gives me a performance called Dance of the Dead which is pretty much “Thriller.” I have yet to use it. But it is kind of a capstone for this gothy-rockstar-bard character.

Dance of the Dead (Su):
At 10th level, a dirge bard can use his bardic performance to cause dead bones or bodies to rise up and move or fight at his command. This ability functions like animate dead, but the created skeletons or zombies remain fully animate only as long as the dirge bard continues the performance. Once it stops, any created undead collapse into carrion. Bodies or bones cannot be animated more than once using this ability. Unlike animate dead, dance of the dead requires no components and does not have the evil descriptor.

Mechanically I’m pretty much equal parts buff/support, enemy debuff, ranged DPR.

Before you protest about not seeing these things, it is an aggregate challenge with a tier-set DC in the scenario.

Those on the ground march through the inhospitable forest, their maze-like path illuminated by the pale, purple incandescent light of the bioluminescent flowers. Above, Rangilde and Helga skirt the forest canopy, trying to keep sight of their land-bound companions.

Suddenly, several tree trunks begin to shake and the canopy rises upwards. In the few shocked moments that you gape at the animate forest, broken twigs and branches showering those on the ground, you begin to realize that those are not tree trunks but legs, and the canopy rising up are colossal spiders.

Having seen what resembles their natural prey, they fire webs from their immense spinnerets. The caustic silk wraps around Helga twice over. The elasmotherium shrugs off the venom seeping off of the silk (I estimated her minimum Fortitude at +10 for a level 10 companion with Mammoth Rider adjustment).

Your adventurer instincts snap into play as the (red) first of the titanic spiders lunges at Helga.

If 26 hits Helga's Flat Footed AC, she takes 45 damage.

Trey tosses his concoction onto the immense body of the furthest spider. The carapace sizzles as the contents explode across the beast. The sizzling ooze seems to expand unnaturally when exposed to air and almost immediately begins to thicken. The plastic bands adhere to the spider and nearby trees and bushes.

Lissa concentrates on drawing material form the Elemental Plane of Water in order to face the colossi on better, at least, footing. The swifter of the two great beasts senses the opportunity to snap at the hydrokineticist. The spider's fangs sink into her watery armor, injecting venom harmlessly.

Simultaneously, leaps forward Laara overextends her blow to strike the entangled colossal spider. She forces the closest leg's lower articulation backwards with an audible crack. The half-elf then learns that the forest actively disapproves of her presence. Several vines lash out and try to grab her, although she deftly avoids them.

Now you know that if you stop within the vegetation areas within the map, you must make a Reflex save to avoid being entangled. This effect is clearly not happening to the spiders.

Keriassa carefully weaves her spell and is surrounded by illusions. She then makes a hasty dash across the clearing, but none of the spiders seem capable of taking advantage of the opening at the moment. However, once she stops to draw her bow, three aggressive vines spring out from the vegetation and wrap around her legs and her waist.

A low, rumbling growl emitting from Valentino rhythmically forms into an eerie chant that is curiously inspiring.

Too close for comfort here… Valentino then moves back and away from the colossal arachnids.

Valentino begins an inspiring chant and then retreats from the immediate threat. Unfortunately, he the forest poses a threat as well and swiftly entangles his arms and right leg.

Stuck to the trees, the colossal spider cannot go after its preferred prey--flying woolly rhinoceros--so it settles for a nearby snack. It lowers its mouth towards Laara. However, the fangs are easily sidestepped, and the venom is injected into the ground.

Dealing with avoiding attacks? Lissa has trained for that.
But being bodily ran over? That's a new experience all together for her.
So being battered by the spider forces her to look up at the beast and scowl. "Fine, you horrible Starsong-forsaken nightmare fuel! You want to play rough?" she cries out as she shoots one of her watery limbs out. With a quick flick of the 'wrist', a long jet of water flows out, forming a long whip. "Then, let's play rough!" With a moment's thought, her form blurs faintly with increased speed, and she unleashes 3 quick, but potent strikes at the spider in front of her.

Valentino frees himself from the grasping vines and retreats from the spider, but his movement tickles its interest and it tries to pin down a serpentine snack for after it finishes chasing that delicious looking flying rhinoceros. The massive fangs rip into the bard's back, but his body rejects the venom with ease.

Vines try to ensnare the bard, but his magic protects him. Looking back at the spider, it seems rather dazed for some reason. Valentino might smile--or he might not, given the amount of his own blood he spilled across the forest floor.

Laara pounds on whatever part of the titan spider in front of her that she can reach. She wears it down a fair bit. (2 hits due to its entangle)

Trey catches the now cursed spider with his caustic, expanding foam bomb, locking that beast into place.

Keriassa tries a desperate gambit that pays off poorly in the end. She fires her arrows rapidly, but the other spider snaps its fangs at her, catching her painfully. She manages to avoid most of the venom, if not the damage caused by the lance-like fangs. Only one of her arrows penetrates the heavy chitin.

With both of the spiders distracted, Liassa makes good use of her elemental whip. Thanks to the entangling goo from Trey's bomb, the first two lashes crack the colossal spider's hide. It falls to the ground, shaking the ground and causing broken twigs, dead leaves, and old birds' nests to rain down upon you. She strikes out at the last of the spiders (20 ft reach, right?) and cracks it with a solid blow.

With its mate dead and its own body leaking ichor, the colossal spider tries to grab a snack and run. However, it only manages a mouthful of dirt.
